When Vivian and Victor Tailor, a pair of psychic siblings, are assigned a seven-year-old cold case of a missing woman, what should have been a routine investigation quickly becomes anything but. They find themselves guests of a mysterious lord who inhabits a dark, foreboding manor full of mirrors. He takes a special interest in Vivian, and soon, she begins to experience night terrors that she suspects are more than just dreams. A string of suspicious deaths and missing persons soon follow, and it’s up to the Tailors to determine if these cases are related and, if so, who is behind them…all while Vivian tries to navigate her conflicting feelings about the enigmatic noble watching her every move.
I’m leaning more and more towards gothic reads this year and it’s been so fun, though I’m also realizing that there are some aspects to many of these books that don’t work for me so the exploration has been a bit up and down for me.
Revenant’s gothic atmosphere was excellent. It had exactly the vibes that I enjoy. The dark seductiveness, even in the face of danger, creepy but intriguing, always leaving me to wonder how bad it could really be. Add in really interesting magical abilities, and I was hooked. The mystery was interesting as well and I liked seeing how the characters used their abilities to solve crimes.
The plot itself was where I struggled a little bit. While the fMC’s abilities and emotions were well developed and showcased, I didn’t see how her brother contributed much to the story. I would’ve loved to see an example of his power making a bigger impact so that the struggle to make it helpful in this case would’ve had more impact. In the same vein, the reason for her struggles and the mystery of the mirrors could’ve been explained more at the end as well. The ending felt so abrupt that I was unsure whether this was a series or a standalone since I still had several questions that had carried me through the story.
Overall though, I really enjoyed this moody and unsettling read. Jackson built an intriguing world that I’d love to see more stories in and has characters that are more than first meets the eye, which is something I quite enjoy as well.
Thank you very much to the author and team at Quill & Crow for an ARC of this novel!
An eerie gothic mystery with a central character as intriguing as he is unsettling. Jackson’s writing is superb—the prose is polished, and as ethereal as the psychic powers at work. I’ll never walk by a mirror without a second look again. A more full review to come!
Okay, let me just say this: Revenant by Jamie Jackson is the kind of eerie, slow-burn paranormal mystery that gets under your skin—and I mean that in the best, goosebump-raising way.
From the moment psychic siblings Vivian and Victor Tailor are handed a cold case that’s been collecting dust for seven years, I was in. They’re both sharp in different ways, and I loved how their dynamic played off each other. Victor’s got that grounded, analytical vibe, while Vivian is… well, she’s spiraling into some deep, dark waters—and I was right there with her.
And let’s talk about the manor. It’s gothic. It’s full of mirrors. And it’s owned by a mysterious lord who gives off serious “I might seduce you or murder you” energy. The moment Vivian steps into that place, you just know something is wrong—but it’s so deliciously unclear what that something is.
The psychological tension? Chef’s kiss. Vivian starts having these night terrors that feel way too real, and as a reader, I couldn’t tell what was a dream, a vision, or a supernatural trap. I lived for those scenes—creepy, surreal, and beautifully written. Every time I thought I had a grip on what was happening, Jamie Jackson flipped the table.
And that noble? Ugh. He’s maddening and magnetic in equal measure. I couldn’t decide if I wanted Vivian to run from him or run to him—and she’s right there too, caught in that dangerous pull. Is he a villain, a victim, or something else entirely? That question haunted me just as much as it haunted her.
What really worked for me is that the paranormal stuff doesn’t overshadow the emotional weight of the mystery. There are real stakes here—missing people, deaths, a chilling pattern that starts to emerge. And beneath it all is Vivian, grappling with her own fears, instincts, and the haunting possibility that her psychic gift might be leading her straight into danger.
This isn’t your average paranormal whodunnit. It’s dark, lush, and layered—with just the right amount of psychological unease, gothic romance, and mystery to keep me flipping pages like my life depended on it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – If you like your mysteries with a touch of psychic sleuthing, shadowy mansions, and the kind of romantic tension that makes you yell at the book, Revenant is a must-read. I devoured it, loved it, and honestly? I’m still side-eyeing my mirrors.
Genre is so hard for me, but I feel like this book lands solidly in ‘gothic mystery’ territory. Set in what feels like an alternate Edwardian era, the story follows Vivian and her brother Victor as they muddle through a series of cases in search of missing women. There’s an undercurrent of a sort of passive acceptance of magic that delights me–charmed lamps and self-driving carriages, to speak nothing of the Tailor siblings’ abilities.
I very much enjoyed how understated the fantasy elements were. Like it was so normal to the characters that, as a reader, you can’t help but accept it as well (I’ve found this doesn’t always land well when coupled with worlds so very like our own, but is so wonderful when it does). It made the creeping dread that twined through the story feel almost like a subtle gaslighting. Were the characters just seeing things? Were you? In a way, it felt almost like a psychological thriller in that I wasn’t sure I could trust myself, let alone the narrator. Was that just me and my need to seek out clues to guess the ending? Couldn’t say, but perhaps you should give it a read if that sounds intriguing.
While this isn’t a fast-paced, action-packed story, it was lyrical in its meandering–inviting you to stop and experience the world with all of your senses (such a nice change from the bite-sized, short attention span grabs everywhere. They have their place, but I do love the chance to slow down). I’d definitely be interested in more stories from this world. Victor and his abilities, I imagine, would keep me quite glued to the page.
Reading Revenant felt like stepping into a fever dream wrapped in velvet and shadows. As someone who chases that perfect blend of creeping dread, rich atmosphere, and characters who walk the line between magic and madness, I knew from the first page that Jamie Jackson had me in her grip. And by the end? I was completely undone.
Vivian and Victor Tailor—psychic twins with a tangled past—are the kind of protagonists I crave: complicated, sharp, and so deeply bonded that it hurts. Their dynamic is the anchor in a story that grows stranger and more twisted by the page. When they’re handed a cold case involving a missing woman, it should be a straightforward haunting. But this is gothic horror at its best—nothing is simple, and everything has teeth.
The manor they find themselves in is its own character: full of mirrors, secrets, and the slow, sickening sense that reality is beginning to fray. Every detail feels intentional, from the creaking floorboards to the unnerving presence of the mysterious lord who resides there. His obsession with Vivian is subtle at first—then disturbingly consuming. And as her dreams begin to bleed into reality, we’re left questioning what’s real, what’s psychic echo, and what’s lurking in the mirrors.
Jamie Jackson’s writing is lush and eerie, perfectly suited to a story that oozes tension and dread. The pacing is masterful—slow enough to steep you in unease, but with bursts of revelation and fear that left me breathless. There were moments I had to stop reading just to feel what had just happened. And that ending? Completely unhinged—in the best possible way. I turned the last page and just sat there, stunned, needing answers and more pages.
This book is a gift for fans of: 🕯️ Gothic horror with psychological bite 🧠 Psychic twins solving dark mysteries 🪞 Haunted houses where the walls (and mirrors) are watching 🖤 Slow-burn dread that builds and builds 🤯 Twists that shatter your reality
Revenant is the kind of novel that doesn’t just tell a story—it haunts you. Read it at night, preferably with the lights low and a mirror covered nearby. You’ll thank me later.
I had to sleep on reviewing this one because WHAT EVEN WAS THAT ENDING???? REVENANT is a gothic horror novel about a brother and sister duo living in a steampunk AU England that has definite Lockwood & Co. vibes. Vivian and Victor work for The Company, which is a bureau of psychics that assist the police in their investigations. When they are called out to LeVerre mansion, something immediately seems off. There's no traces of the missing woman they're supposed to be investigating, and the energies of the objects that she examines seem... off. Also there's mirrors everywhere, and as someone who is very afraid of mirrors, NO THANK YOU.
I think less is more going into this book but it feels very Lockwood & Co. meets Crimson Peak, minus the romantic storyline. There were some scenes in here that were genuinely chilling and the beginning section had absolutely immaculate vibes. By 89%, I still wasn't sure how the author was going to wrap everything up, and by 99% percent, I was genuinely scared that I would not get the answers I wanted. The ending is ambiguous, but I feel like if you read between the lines, you can come up with your own chilling interpretation of what really happened, so ultimately, I did really enjoy this a lot. But now, I also want a slutty little sequel.
Grab a blanket, light a candle and start reading... This deliciously spooky and haunting gothic tale of psychic siblings Victor and Vivian Tailor is the perfect read for when night slowly creeps in and leaves you with a sense of being watched.
Get lost in an eerie mansion, rush along cold streets and hope to get some hot tea with that charismatic but mysterious Lord LeVerre - Lucien, if you truly catch his interest - but never lose sight of the case you have been assigned to. And take care of Victor! Your touch sensitive psychic ability may be more obvious but his visions catch him off-guard. You need his cool and calming presence.
Oh, and beware the mirrors! You will never look at them the same again.
Seriously, Revenant is such an amazing gothic tale. The words, the time period, the casual soft magic every here and there... this tale hits all the right spots for me. The ending might not be for everyone but I loved it. Now can we get another story with Victor at it's heart? I feel he deserves to get the spotlight too. 🖤🌹
Revenant is the first novel I've read by Jamie Jackson and I am truly mesmerized by the beautifully lyrical writing style. It really draws you into this eerie, gothic mystery.
I love stories with siblings and even more so - twins! These main characters really captivated my heart from the start with their maturity, line of work, level-headedness and their typical snarky sibling banter.
How does this story draw you in? By its slow-burn paranormal mystery. The little creepy moments, though brief, stay with you much longer than you would like but it's also very addictive. Let's just say I made an active decision NOT to read it at night lol!
Overall, this slow-burn, gothic mystery is worth the read and I would highly recommend it!
First of all, I LOVED the creepy, gothic vibes that you get in this book. Second of all, if there isn't a second book I will cry. I did not see that ending coming and about halfway through the book I was biting my nails with anticipation of what was to happen next.
I went into this mostly blind. I saw the front cover, read the synopsis quick and said click to purchase. I'm glad I did. Please experience this for yourself, a good read for a dark stormy day. I will say I'll never look at a mirror directly ever, ever again!!!!
P.S. Please let there be a book 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I dove into this book. Wish I did it sooner because it is so freaking awesome. There is slow build of tension. It’s subtle and by the end I just wanted to shake off the tension. Also it totally ends on a cliffhanger but it will make book 2 even more worth reading. 5 ⭐️ from me for this clean and suspenseful read.

Honestly, wow. What a true modern take of a gothic story. The vague, lingering eeriness is captivating and alluring. The perfectly spooky vibe while not quite being a stereotypical horror story. I don't see too many true gothic stories pop up and this is amazing. I could not stop reading until I reached the end. If you're a fan of penny dreadfuls, do yourself a favor and read this.
This is not my typical genre, but I really enjoyed it! The style of writing pulled me in from page one, and there was a mysterious current running throughout the book, which made it tough to put down. I loved the characters, the sibling bond was realistic, I found myself chuckling over their banter. And let me just say: the ending was completely unexpected, talk about a cliffhanger!!!
This book is perfect for fans of gothic horror, fantasy, and mystery. And the ending? Insane. I want more. This was the second book I’ve read by this author, but now I need to go through her backlist.
This thrilling gothic mystery novel had me hooked from the start. The eerie atmosphere is fantastically written and enhanced by Vivian's point of view.

I think this is a good story. I liked the plot, and I thought the characters were well-developed and believable. I enjoyed the ending and the twists and turns that got me there.

THAT ENDING THOUGH I would die for a sequel, this was fantastic.
I love the characters, the relationship between vic & viv, lucien has the best vibes, and the writing is gorgeous. I had so much fun, highly recommend!
I have to say this genre is completely out of the norm for me but I thoroughly enjoyed it! It’s one of those books that you can’t read fast enough because you are eager to know what happens. The ending definitely makes you think!
🥀gothic, atmospheric mysteries 🔍 slow, moody tension 🗝️character driven paranormal vibes 🕯️stories that refuse to tie every thread neatly
— 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓮 follows psychic siblings Vivian and Victor Tailor as they take on a cold case that should have been simple ,but quickly turns into something much darker. —⋆𝓶𝓪𝓲𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼 Revenant is one of those reads that stays with you long after the final page. I’m still not completely sure how I feel ,not because it wasn’t good, but because it’s deliberately unsettling, atmospheric, and full of unanswered questions.
