Let's get this out of the way first. You'll never convince me that the interactions between Nick and Judy don't have romantic intent. Yes, men and women can be just friends, but the chemistry that Nick and Judy have far exceeds that type of relationship. Nick and Judy are most definitely romantic. They are a ship. We serve WildeHopps in this household.

Onto the review:
I easily could have rated this book two stars because of the lack of smooth transitions between scenes and the lack of context the reader is given in a lot of situations - like, you're just somewhere with the characters, doing your reading thing and seemingly out of nowhere something action-ish happens and you're just supposed to roll with it. However, I am giving this book grace because it is a movie novelization - junior novelization - for a film that isn't even out yet. I'm slightly disappointed because I thought the Zootopia Junior Novelization for the first movie was a much better adaption (and it was also released before the movie...just to make a point that there are no excuses here for lazy writing) but I digress. This is a kid's book and a reader below the age of ten, which this book is primarily intended for, isn't going to notice poor narrative structure. Though age range and intended audience isn't an excuse for lazy writing or short cuts. That being said, the overall writing was fine. It wasn't bad, it wasn't phenomenal.

There was definitely stuff cut out and altered to keep the mystery for when the movie comes out. This book feels more like a publicity ad or promotional material for when the movie comes out itself. There are scenes that are clearly shown in the movie trailers that don't appear in the book at all.

Why am I being so critical? I dunno, man. I guess I just really freaking love Zootopia.

This book was interesting to read because it's somewhat similar to the film but it makes changes to the plot in some areas. So it gives you a new take on the story but also has some of the same beats that were hit in the film. I'm curious if this novel was written based off a previous version of the script before it was finalized into the film that we got to see. I can't tell you if that is something that holds back this novelization or not. I mean I am not the targeted audience for this book because I am not a elementary school child but I think if I was I would enjoy this book just a bit more than I did. I mean it's a quick read which is nice during the holidays when I don't have much time to sit down and read a long book. It defiantly kept me entertained for the most part. But I have to say I am glad we got the film that we got and not the novelization version.

This is so easy for kids to read and I like that it has a slight difference in dialogues (to which I love!!) how I wish they made an adult version of this to cater us not young readers haha. I would have loved that even more.

A cute novelization! Difficult to criticize as an adult reader because it is intended for ages 7-10, but I am trying to keep that in mind in my review. The overall story of Zootopia 2 gets a 5 for me. As a standalone, this novelization would be a 3. I've averaged them out to a 4, because I assume this content is not really meant to be consumed separately from the animated feature.

Even for a junior novel, I feel as though the writing is lacking. This is basically a minimalistic description of the film (or an earlier script version of it, so it differs a bit from the story we got!). I find the details that were cut and the details that were left in mildly confusing.

For example, a line where Nick says "that's a canine slur" is left in- but any descriptions of mild cartoon violence are reduced to "Karen totally freaked out!" or "The sea lion lost it!" This raises the question- are jokes about slurs and references to nightclubs appropriate for this age group, but describing character actions such as strangling, snarling, chasing, or biting is too mature?

Young readers are not QUITE this dumb, and the book does fall flat over its movie counterpart. There is the opportunity here to add in nuances that couldn't be communicated in the movie, to make this a good tool for young readers to connect to the themes of the movie that they might miss without a little help! There are a few good moments, like equating Pawbert's pursuit of Nick to hunting prey, and noting the symbolism of the confrontation on the weather wall being positioned between a hot climate and a cold climate, but these moments are few and far between. I wish these novelizations wouldn't take young readers for granted in their capacity to understand complex themes!
