So… 1 more book before the end of the year and it was available in hoopla so I read it. It was cute enough if you play tabletop rpgs.

It's a neat idea to have a comic that also acts as an intro/explainer for a specific TTRPG, but there's a lot of pitfalls in practice.
You can't get immersed in the cool fantasy setting cause it keeps pausing to have the IRL characters explain things and roll dice, and those IRLs don't feel like they have any story to carry on their own that isn't 'sit at table roll dice'. End result: I'm not endeared to either.
There's also just sooo much text per page, and it is not interesting enough to justify it. I want a comic not a novel.

I only got 14 pages in before being exhausted by this. Tried to get through more but I was skimming and skipping without even meaning it.

A group of friends travel to new worlds, full of humor and heart, through D&D.

While most of the book is humorous and light, there are some heartfelt moments that tug.
For me, unlike most graphic novels geared towards young adults, it was comparatively wordy. While I don't have a problem with this, it shocks the system a bit, so only those readers who are that invested will appreciate it.
The illustrations are vibrant and full of humor. It also features a colorful cast of characters.

Kind of dry

Follows a group of friends playing a tabletop campaign where people have replaceable crystal hearts that grant them powers and influence their behavior. The mix of meta conversations into the adventurering kind of made it dry and dull. It started out kind of fun, but by the halfway point I was bored, bringing it to two stars, minus another for adding a romance.

a corporate ad blended with a guide to play their game. not much of a story, they just have to fit a lot of text on those pages.
