Mystery's End: A Betsy Malone Mystery

Rate this book
“You are enthusiastically invited to join us for a spooky and scary house party to celebrate the Grand Opening of Mystery’s End to the public. Come prepared to contact the other side. Those prone to heebie-jeebies can please stay at home. October fifth through the eighth, 1924. ”
Betsy Malone expects things to be a little strange when she attends a house party at her best friend’s newly inherited mansion. After all, the house is full of glass panes instead of walls, doors that open onto mirrors, and a koi pond on the first floor. And Angela, Betsy’s flapper best friend, has already warned her that there will be forays into the spirit world with table tipping and planchette writing. Everything is fun and games until unexplainable things start to happen and a guest is found dead. The police call it a heart attack. Angela hopes it was a ghost. Betsy suspects it was murder. Now it's up to Betsy to figure out what happened before everyone leaves, taking their secrets with them; or before someone else dies.

I found this a fun read. I did see where things were going, but that's half the fun of reading a mystery is to try in your own mind to piece things together.

Set in the 1920's. Betsy Malone not quite private investigator is invited to a friend's new house for a 4 day long party to bring spirits from beyond to visit and answer questions.. Well maybe not new...inherited house that is quite a marvel and mystery in and of itself. Odd staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open to mirrors, stained glass windows in the floor ...and oh most of the walls are glass. What can go wrong...oh plenty involving of course a murder and Betsy is just the smart one to figure out the clues.

So if you have ever been or have seen it on TV the house may in some ways remind you of the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose CA which the author admits she was inspired by, also a little of the Game of Clue (perhaps not an inspiration, but I can kind of see it some). With great imagination Mayanne puts together a fantastic mansion, and fun mystery. I think she did a good job. I have met her and once upon a time new her family when I lived in CA, so this was a lil bonus in my reading.

Wonderful read reminiscent of the Golden Age of Crime

What a terrific read. Flavours of Albert Campion and Lord Peter Wimsey and set in almost the same time period. Best of all it has a mystery that would challenge Miss Marple and with a final reveal that gives you all the answers. Wonderful characters from the ditsy flappers to our more sombre, intelligent and sensitive heroine.
The house party is in her BFF's newly inherited but very strange house. A house party of 8 and in a house that has windows everywhere, hidden rooms and staircases that lead to blank walls. When one of the house guests is found dead. Everyone including the police believe he died of a heart attack. Everyone except Betsy. She believes he was murdered. The more she finds out about him the more certain she becomes. A blackmailer and a blackguard he was a cad. Can she put the clues together and find out what really happened? Does the house really call in spirits?

We read this for our book group. It was recommend by one of our members who acted as one of the editor's. It is always fun to read something that someone you know had a part in. It was short and quirky and fun. I liked the timeframe and the house as its own character. Not everything was smooth and there were some questions I had along the way but overall it was enjoyable.

Parents: No sex or language. A little bit of violence and mystery.

It was good.
It could have been tons better if the print copy included a floor plan of the house. Just easier to follow and visualize.

And I found it hard to believe that everyone just went about business as normal. Especially Patrick, who probably ought to have been helping make funeral arrangements.

A strange house, Spirits, a party of people and a murder. Who done it? How well do we know our friends? Betsy is level headed and a no nonsense kind of gal who always seeks the truth. Never fear, she has got your back or will a few young men sweep her off her feet before she solves the mystery?

Mystery's End: A Betsy Malone Mystery

A house built by an eccentric old lady. Staircases that end at walls. Glass walled rooms, hidden cubby holes, doors on ceilings, koi ponds and a dead body all lead to a great who dunnit. Betsy's friends Dexter and Angela are left their Aunt Virginia's strangely designed house and decide to open it for tours. Before embarking on this enterprise they invite several acquaintances to a House Party for a few nights with the idea of practicing their tours on them. What they don't expect is a murder the very first day. A fun book that keeps you guessing to the very end!

A clean read which can be a rarity in this day and age.

Hooray, I've wanted to read this book for awhile and I finally got my eyes on it! Very enjoyable although I didn't solve the mystery as well as I suspected. Pleasantly surprised the whole way through. The main character has quite a brain on her shoulders!

What a satisfying book

I hoped I'd like this story, and I did. Betsy is someone I look forward to knowing better, and I appreciate how shivers and sense were blended throughout.

Great historical detail, a truly unique setting, and a protagonist that I'd love to hang out with set this mystery apart from the rest.
