It takes a good writer to make 500 pages fly past in absolutely no time, I breathed once and read 50 pages. I seriously admire the author for finding that great balance of taking romance seriously enough to make readers care about your characters but also not too seriously to take the fun and lightness out of it. Readers are in on the joke, but also willing to be swept away by these unrealistically gorgeous men (and women, if you're so inclined). My favourite part was the complete role reversal of the male love interest being too weak and wounded to raise a fist while our heroine disarmed a guy and punched his balls into another dimension, then went back to support her dude and keep him from fainting, again. I need a third book in the series, and a TV show too.

Mrs Finch is also back and I love that she is mischievous and gorgeous i just love everything about the characters and their cheeky expressions and dynamics.
OLIVER? cheekbones?? grumpy?? attentive??? loyal??? YES. he was deeply funny and a perfect match for Mari.
this was effortlessly funny and i found myself laughing aloud several times. Laura has done it again with that microtrope of teasing your partner who you are fake-knowing/dating/acquainted. I EAT IT UP EVERY TIME.
My favourite scene was the poison scene. HILARIOUS AND SCARY ALL AT ONCE. close second has to be the final confrontation. Mari is an absolute badass businesswoman, fighter, florist, and working woman. i love the plus sized rep she gives and i would love to see more of her.

BEST of all Izzy and Max turns up MULTIPLE times and are insufferably cute!!! their first scene had be literally squealing and laughing.

Marigold Bloom houdt van haar werk in de bloemenzaak van haar familie, maar als Simon Earnshaw, een walgelijke zwijn-worm, hun verloving onverwacht verbreekt omdat zij ‘te veel’ is en zijn vader Geoffrey haar onder druk zet met een oneerbaar voorstel, staat haar toekomst ineens op losse schroeven. Een toevallige en nogal ongemakkelijke ontmoeting met de buitengewoon aantrekkelijke maar chagrijnige Oliver Lockhart leidt haar naar de vrouwen van het Vogelhuis, een onderzoeksbureau dat gespecialiseerd is in het opgraven van schandalen en louche zaken van machtige mannen. Zij lossen haar grootste probleem op, rekruteren Mari direct en een half jaar later krijgt ze een zeer speciale klus: ze moet de nepverloofde van Oliver spelen om onderzoek te doen naar zijn verloren gewaande zus.

Mari en Oliver vormen samen een ontzettend leuk duo dat goed aan elkaar gewaagd is: zij is vrolijk, verantwoordelijk, ambitieus en intelligent maar onzeker, hij is een scherp en broeierig type dat niemand echt aardig vindt en constant commentaar heeft op haar gevóélens maar toch een klein hartje heeft, gevormd door zijn verleden de werkzaamheden van het Vogelhuis graag ondersteunt, soms onverwacht lief uit de hoek kan komen en met droge humor gespannen situaties verlicht. Hun dynamiek wordt sterk neergezet en hun samenwerking verloopt steeds soepeler, maar hun neprelatie kan door hun verschillen en andere achtergronden toch nooit uitmonden in iets echts?

Je leest wat meer over het rekruteringsproces en de training, je reist van Londen naar Yorkshire en Parijs, de betekenis van bloemen is belangrijk in het verhaal en de terugkeer naar het Vogelhuis voelt als thuiskomen. De originele en inventieve werkzaamheden van deze krachtige vrouwen gaan nooit vervelen, geliefde personages uit het eerste deel keren terug en krijgen een grotere rol, waardoor hun achtergrond verder wordt uitgewerkt, en aan hun zijde beleef je levendige avonturen vol grappige momenten en boeiende ontwikkelingen.

Door de meeslepende schrijfstijl en het vlotte verteltempo, de diverse, interessante en veelzijdige personages, de geheimen, actie en intrige, het goed opgezette mysterie en de heerlijke dialogen zit je meteen in het verhaal, het onderzoek kabbelt een beetje maar krijgt verrassende wendingen en dit boek zit vol vriendschap, mooie familiebanden, persoonlijke dilemma’s, plagerijen, romantische openbaringen en humor, waardoor het een verslavende en geweldige leeservaring oplevert!

Delightful sequel and long may this series continue! There are so many characters who surely have fascinating back stories. Marigold Bloom is as fun as her name and she loves flowers. I loved her family too and want to spend more time at her family’s florist shop. 😍

The main plot of the story is about the hero’s missing sister who suddenly turns up. Is it really her? The Aviary is ready and eager to investigate. It was so fun to read another take on this type of story after reading She Came Back by Patricia Wentworth recently.

J'avais eu un coup de coeur pour Agency for a scandal (comme j'ai eu un coup de coeur pour quasi tous les romans de cette autrice soit dit en passant) et je n'ai ABSOLUMENT PAS été déçue par ce tome compagnon. C'est toujours aussi INCROYABLE... addictif au possible, bourré d'humour et d'esprit, mais aussi de tension et d'investigation. C'est immersif, c'est touchant, c'est... bah c'est parfait en fait ? Vraiment, gros coup de coeur pour le style et l'imaginaire de Laura Wood. Si vous ne connaissez pas cette autrice, je ne peux que vous conseiller de découvrir ses romans : tous sont des pépites qui vont vous faire tomber amoureux en un clin d'oeil !

Wow! I can't believe that the second book in this series was just as good, if not better, than the first! 🤩 It was a bonus to learn a bit about the language of flowers, too!

I adore Laura Wood's young adult books, but this series in particular is utterly fantastic. There's so much to love about these books:

🌟Quick and easy read (perfect for when you're feeling down or under the weather)
🌟Diverse and well-rounded characters
🌟Strong female leads with lots of sass and intelligence
🌟Interesting plots and story lines
🌟Lovely descriptions of food, clothes and flowers

The Agency for Scandal series would make an awesome movie or tv series! Still hoping for a third (or fourth!) book in this series. Highly, highly recommended!

In dit deel maken we kennis met Marigold, Mari, Bloom. We ontmoeten haar op een dieptepunt in haar leven. Een dal. Want haar verloofde Simon Earnshaw heeft haar gedumpt. Als oud vuil. Maar wat ze dan nog niet beseft, is dat hij haar éígenlijk een dienst bewijst. Simon is namelijk een grootst mogelijke hánsworst, een onnozele, hersenloze domoor van duizelingwekkende proporties. Een druiloor. In alles het tegenovergestelde van Oliver Lockhart. De man die het pad kruist van Mari.

Mari vindt Oliver al knap wanneer hij nors kijkt, dan wordt hij door zijn glimlach - zacht, met volle lippen, een glimp van zijn witte tanden en subtiele rimpeltjes rond zijn warme, donkere ogen - ronduit adembenemend. Fake Dating is niet eerder zó'n uitdaging geweest.

Dit verhaal is als balsem voor je ziel. Het komt binnen als een sterke borrel en laat je hart bonzen en je ledematen tintelen.
Het verhaal kabbelt. Máár onderzoek doen kost tijd; het is een kwestie van heel veel stukjes in elkaar passen totdat je het totaalbeeld ziet. Totdat het mysterie zich ontvouwt. Met een plot zoals een kat die haar klauwen uitslaat: scherp, bliksemsnel en dodelijk precies. Dit verhaal was niet alleen toereikend. Het was gewéldig! ****

Es una verdadera lástima que haya libros con tantas cosas positivas en ellos pero que luego nunca llegan al gran público. Ya sea por falta de interés o porque apenas llegan a traducirse, o por la razón que sea, me da mucha pena tener un libro como este en mis manos y no poderos decir a todos que lo leáis. Porque tanto este como el anterior, no están disponibles en castellano.

De hecho, sólo uno de los libros de Laura Wood ha llegado a publicarse en España (“Bajo un cielo de sueños dorados”). Esta autora es, probablemente, mi autora de romance juvenil favorita, es incluso más que eso: es la seguridad de que al abrir un libro suyo voy a encontrar una aventura que me va a dar muy buenos ratos y que me va a dejar con una sensación de felicidad plena. Sus libros suelen tener suficientes puntos en común como para predecir esa sensación para cuando lo termine: sus protagonistas suelen ser chicas a punto o recién alcanzada la mayoría de edad que están preparadas para echar a volar por si mismas, es decir, cada libro es un coming-of-age de chicas soñadoras, independientes, y con bastante sentido del humor que, al mismo tiempo, mantienen los pies sobre la tierra y nunca olvidan quienes son. Laura Wood en este sentido parece beber mucho de la escuela de Enid Blyton, Maria Gripe o las novelas para chicas de entre los años 50 y 80. Libros como los de internados o chicas inquietas como “Puck” que leía y releía cuando era chavalita.

No se a cuántos de vosotros os sonarán aquellos libros, pero muy en esa escuela Laura Wood ambienta esta serie, su más reciente, en mujeres inquietas y misterios por resolver, añadiendo a cada historia una dosis adecuada de romance. Cada uno de esos libros, y este es el segundo, contiene una aventura diferente con una protagonista diferente que encuentra el amor de una forma inesperada. Claro que a los libros les une un nexo común y es la agencia en la que estas chicas realizan sus investigaciones, con lo que los personajes en común podrían ser los siguientes protagonistas.

En el Londres de 1898 la joven Marigold Bloom está al frente de la librería familiar, que va viento en popa. Sin embargo ve como cuando su prometido rompe su compromiso todo se tambalea, pues el padre de este es el dueño del edificio donde los Bloom viven y tienen su negocio. Desesperada y gracias a un encontronazo con un joven llamado Oliver Lockhart, Mari entra en contacto con “The Aviary” una agencia secreta de mujeres investigadoras que ayudan a mujeres en apuros. Solucionada su situación y profundamente agradecida, Mari se ofrece voluntaria para ayudar a otras mujeres que puedan necesitarla a su vez. Sin embargo, tras su entrenamiento no es otra mujer quien necesita ayuda sino el mismo Oliver Lockhart, amigo de la agencia, quien no está seguro de que la joven que dice ser su hermana sea realmente ella. Porque la hermana de Oliver supuestamente murió siendo niña, aunque su cadáver nunca se encontró, pero él es un rico industrial y por ello cuando decide poner en claro sus asuntos, aparece esta chica y él no se fía. Mari tendrá que infiltrarse en su familia haciéndose pasar por la prometida de Oliver para no levantar sospechas… y la verdad es que nadie podía haber imaginado lo bien que iban a llegar a fingir. A pesar de que Oliver es un gruñón, en apariencia.

Una vez más he encontrado momentos de completo disfrute con Laura Wood. Insisto en que es una escritora maravillosa de mucho confort para mi por los buenos ratos que me ha dado con sus fenomenales protagonistas, vibrantes aventuras, una ambientación espectacular, imaginación y belleza en las palabras y un sutil sentido del humor lleno de guiños. No puedo recomendarla más y sin embargo creo que no la recomiendo lo suficiente.

Oh, ik dacht dat een boek niet beter kon zijn dan deel 1! Dat boek had alles: sterke vrouwelijke hoofdpersonages, actie en intrige, met een vleugje romantiek. Maar: dit boek had dat allemaal óók, maar dan met romantiek die me echt deed glimlachen naar het boek en deed smelten tot een gesmolten plasje.. verliefde lezer? Oj oj oj wat was dit een puur genot, ik wil NU deel 3!

Wat een eer om deze serie vooruit te mogen lezen van de uitgever een een quote te mogen aanleveren voor achterop deel 2! Heel bijzonder om die straks met mijn eigen naam achterop in de hand te mogen houden!

I reckon Mrs Finch actually just runs the Aviary as a cover for her true passion - matchmaking. You're telling me the only way to trick people is a fake relationship? OK Mrs Finch. Sure.
This isn't a Laura Wood that I necessarily reach for or spend time thinking about - unlike the others... - because I'm not really a grumpy/sunshine kinda gal, or a tropey gal at all really and this book, though it is wonderful, it is pretty tropey. But it is a very nice reread. With very nice characters and a still very exciting storyline.

So... I have already finished it... I read it rather quickly and do I have any regrets? Absolutely not! I'm not usually one to go for the grumpy/sunshine trope but I am afraid Laura Wood has won me over, as she does with most things. The story was gripping, but not annoyingly so - you know, where you're in the middle of a mystery and you're just like 'please can we get on with it?!' - not like that... It was so much fun to revisit the characters of the Aviary, I must say I particularly enjoyed seeing Izzy and Max again, my least favourite part of the last book was that it ended just as the good stuff started - Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice was right (as she is with everything), the end of the story is just the beginning of the rest of their lives (wildly paraphrased I must admit) - so I loved meeting the Duke and Duchess of Roxton...again...
Also it was just like, really funny and really well-written. I was smiling out-loud (if it's possible to smile outloud?) for most of the book. Just exactly the *flanter* (ew I'm so sorry) and banter that I want to read on a sad, dark, cold, Scottish January evening.
I'm just sad I read it so quickly and now have to wait for her to come out with another book!

Ik heb echt zo hard genoten van dit boek, omg. Sorry, maar Oliver is de beste grumpy man ooit. En Marigold is zo leuk en sunshine en lief. En hallooo fake fiancé trope! Ik wil nu ook alles weten van bloemen en bloemschikken. Ik wil onderdeel zijn van het Vogelhuis en ik wil vooral nog meer van deze serie.

Het is een soort Bridgerton meets Totally Spice en I’m here for it.

In A Season for Scandal, we follow Marigold, a florist working in her family’s shop. Her world is turned upside down when her fiancé, Simon, unexpectedly breaks off their engagement, leaving her in a difficult position. Shortly after, she meets Oliver, who refers her to a detective agency. What starts as a chance encounter quickly takes an exciting turn: Marigold is immediately recruited by the agency, and her first case revolves around finding Oliver’s missing sister.

After finishing the first book, I couldn’t wait to dive into the next one. While the books can be read as standalones, they are set in the same world with recurring characters. That’s something I absolutely love! It adds depth to the stories and makes them feel familiar, like returning to a beloved place.

Marigold is a fantastic main character: cheerful, quirky, and full of life. On the other hand, there’s Oliver, whose grumpy demeanor makes him the perfect contrast. His dry humor and unexpected remarks had me laughing out loud more than once. Watching their bond slowly grow stronger throughout the story was an absolute joy—it’s heartwarming and delightful.

This book made me laugh, and by the end, I nearly shed a tear. It has everything I look for in a story: humor, emotion, and characters that steal your heart.

I can officially say that I found my favorite book of 2024!!

Quel plaisir de retrouver l'univers de la Volière ! Ayant beaucoup aimé le premier tome, j'avais peu de doutes d'adorer la suite, mais c'est toujours rassurant de voir que l'auteur est capable d'enchaîner des livres de qualité 😇

Concernant l'intrigue, nous sommes à nouveau sur une enquête fort sympathique, qui concerne directement un des personnages secondaires du premier tome. J'avoue m'être énormément prise au jeu, je voulais absolument découvrir la vérité, ce qui m'a permis de dévorer ce livre 🥰

Le nouveau personnage principal, Marigold, est très sympathique à suivre : pour une fois, pas de fille noble, mais une fleuriste, qui possède presque sa propre boutique. J'ai beaucoup aimé sa résilience et son amour pour sa famille, c'est un personnage qui semble réel et qui est très attachant. J'ai aussi beaucoup apprécié qu'elle soit plus-size et tout à fait à l'aise avec ca.

Je mets un tout petit bémol sur l'histoire d'amour, car elle sortait un peu trop de nulle part à mon goût, mais sinon c'était parfait !

Very likeable characters, the transfer of Oliver Lockhart's character from book 1 to 2 was not very convincing though. The case was also quite lame, there was much more action and adventure going on with Izzy and Max in book 1. Still it was nice to be back with Mrs. Finch and her girls.

Het heeft even geduurd, maar uiteindelijk heb ik toch Boek 2 - A Season for Scandal - Vermissingen en Schandalen gelezen (wat doet die ondertitel daar feitelijk? Leest iemand die?). Dat kwam omdat ik wel de vertaling wilde proberen. Het werd al direct spannend, want de naam Tessa van Dooren zei me totaal niks, dus het is altijd toch even afwachten. Maar dat zit helemaal goed. Deze vertaler kent duidelijk haar werk. Misschien zaten er een paar zinnetjes in die me iets te letterlijk vertaald waren, maar iemand met een normale, niet-vertalersachtergrond, gaat echt niks merken. Het leest heel vlot en natuurlijk, en de woordkeuzes zijn ook heel realistisch en spreektalig waar dat nodig is.

Er is over het algemeen sowieso ook een rijke vocabulaire aanwezig in de boeken van Laura Wood, heb ik de indruk. Daar ben ik normaal gesproken wel fan van, maar vreemd genoeg stak het me hier in het begin - de eerste vier of vijf hoofdstukken - wat tegen. Ik vond dat het daar wat te barok of omslachtig werd, te metaforisch en uitbundig. Ofwel ben ik er nadien aan gewend, ofwel is de auteur toen zelf wat gaan dimmen, want daarna stoorde ik me er niet meer aan.

Boek 1 telt in het Engels 517 bladzijdes, Boek 2 in het Nederlands 304. Dat doet echt bizar aan, maar het komt gewoon door de totaal andere grootte, interlinie en opmaak. Volgens mij zijn de verhalen ongeveer even lang. Ik vond de evolutie van de romance in dit tweede deel wel vreemd. Pas rond bladzijde 170 kreeg ik het idee dat er iets begon te bloeien, en daarna duurde het nog steeds even voor er echt iets van te merken was. Met Izzy en Max had ik dat probleem niet.

Het hoofdpersonage, Marigold of Mari, is compleet nieuw in dit boek, maar van de belangrijkste personages is zij zowat de enige. Oliver en het hele Vogelhuis is al bekend en het was tof om bekende gezichten terug te zien. Izzy en Max zijn een leuk koppel, en Sylla is nog altijd haar ruwe bolster met een blanke pit. Wat een geweldige figuur!
Er is ook een resem nieuwe personages. Er is één scène waarin Max' zus Felicity voorkomt - zij wordt al vermeld in The Agency for Scandal en ik was toen heel benieuwd naar haar. Ik weet dat er een derde boek komt ook, maar meer nog niet... maar ik hoop eigenlijk dat zij daar de hoofdrol krijgt. Ze lijkt me er in elk geval geknipt voor.
Maar Felicity doet in dit verhaal verder niet ter zake. De andere nieuwkomers wél: de hele familie Lavigne (geen familie van Avril, vermoed ik). Die zijn ook allemaal goed vormgegeven, allemaal anders. Hélène, of wie dat ook moge zijn, speelt haar rol (welke dat ook moge zijn) goed.

Het zal allicht niemand verbazen dat er inderdaad iets aan de hand is met Hélènes verleden, maar het verhaal zit verder goed in elkaar, want ik wist zelf nooit goed wie ik moest vertrouwen of geloven. Wat dat betreft is dit zeker een schot in de roos! Langzamerhand wordt de puzzel gelegd, maar ik had hem niet af voor de personages zelf. Een mooie ontknoping.

We krijgen in dit boek wat meer achtergrondinformatie over hoe het Vogelhuis nieuwelingen opneemt. Ik vond het wel tamelijk gek dat er ineens sprake is van een proef- en opleidingsperiode van een half jaar met allerlei lessen. Daar kwam in Boek 1 hoegenaamd niet aan de orde - Izzy werd gewoon in het diepe gegooid -, dus wat is hier gaande?

Despite the 2 star rating, which is viewed as low by some, I liked this book enough and I really hope that another book might happen. I think the only reason why this book wasn't higher is my expectations. I thought I'd be recieving a book about two characters I already knew of (at least by mention). Well, I did get one, who seemed quite different from what I remember from book 1. I think he was just strange in here. I liked the witty remarks, but at the same time he seemed too cheerful? And the main character, well, I simply didn't expect her and just hoped to get someone I knew. The strangest thing, perhaps, is that I feel that there was slightly too little romantic, cute interactions between the main character and the love interest. Also, the way I didn't really care about the character's family was a bit of a letdown, but also unsurprising, since they were only in the start and he end of the book. Another thing that bugged me, was the re-use of the fake dating trope, which I felt happened rather forcefully this time, as if it just needed to be used. Despite my complaints, I still hope for more books, perhaps about Scylla?.. And most definitely more about Mrs. Finch, which I felt we found out too little about in this book.

Vol uitbundige bloemstukken, op maat gemaakte kleding van zijde en adembenemende mannen. Doe mij een uitnodiging voor een bal in Yorkshire en maak me je meisje.

This is one case where you CAN judge a book by its cover. Last year I loved The Agency For Scandal so I had high hopes for the second in this series- I wasn’t disappointed!

If you like:

✨ young adult (there is zero spice, but lots of longing)
✨ fake dating
✨ grumpy MMC/sunshine FMC
✨ plus size rep
✨ historical romance (it’s set in the 1890’s)

Then I highly recommend this one! A solid 5 star rating from me. As always with Laura’s books, I just pretend that a world war isn’t looming over our characters 😭

Alweer een heerlijke historische young adult detective roman! Dit keer maken ze een uitstapje naar Parijs waar van alles gebeurd. En eigenlijk vond ik dit deel nog leuker en meeslepender dan deel 1. Het was weer luchtig, mysterieus en romantisch.

Wat hou ik toch van het Vogelhuis, de dappere vrouwen die daar werken en de verhalen die daarbij komen kijken. Door de mysteries blijf ik steeds nieuwsgierig naar hoe het verhaal afloopt.

Dit verhaal gaat over Marigold Bloom, een sterke jonge vrouw met hart voor de bloemenwinkel van haar familie. Nadat haar verloofde het uitmaakt ziet het er niet goed uit voor haar en de bloemenwinkel. Ze komt per toeval terecht bij het Vogelhuis en wordt ook detective. Voor haar eerste klus moet ze samen met Oliver, een knappe humeurige man, doen alsof ze pas verloofd zijn (aaahh de fake dating trope), om zo achter meer informatie te komen van zijn vermiste zus.

Marigold & Oliver zijn het perfecte voorbeeld van ‘Grumpy X Sunshine’. Ondanks dat Oliver nors was kon hij ook erg lief zijn.

Zo leuk om Izzy & Max terug te zien in het verhaal en om te lezen dat ze uiteindelijk echt een dubbele bruiloft hebben gevierd!

Ook bij dit boek heb ik deels naar het audioboek geluisterd en dat werd weer erg fijn voorgelezen.

Wat heeft dit boek mooie vormgeving zeg! En wat een leuke extra dat achterin het boek Marigolds taal der bloemen staat.

Stiekem vond ik dit deel nog leuker dan het eerste deel, dus ik ben ontzettend benieuwd naar deel drie!

Ms Wood has done it again I truly loved this book it was so beautiful and it was nice to see some old characters again from the first book too Laura knows how to write YA historical mysteries and these books are so much fun to read I highly recommend them if you want to feel the Enola Holmes vibes then this scandal series is for you I can’t wait to see what Wood writes next if they’ll be another instalment
