I'm not sure what the point is of having Angel and Faith in completely separate stories in a book called Angel and Faith. At this point they should have just given them separate comics. Both stories are just blase. Gischler completely ignores the humor element the Buffyverse is known for which makes the stories just feel flat and uninspired.

Angel fights Amy in Magictown while Faith is in the Amazon trying to save Riley. These could have been stories out of previous Dark Horse Buffy comics before they started the seasons. The stories go nowhere, feeling like your typical TV property tie in where nothing is allowed to change that could affect the IP. It just feels neutered.

Glad that Faith and Deepscan were able to rescue Riley and the others. Also glad that Angel was able to stop Amy. Wonder how Fred is back. Will Angel and Faith go back to working together? Can't wait to read United!!!

While I still enjoyed this volume, it definitely felt weaker than some of the others.

The Angel storyline didn't do much for me, as I felt like bringing Amy back came entirely out of left field (and to be honest, I'm simply not a fan of her, even as a villain). However, I do like the potential behind Magic Town and appreciated seeing some of its wider possibilities.

On the Faith side, I enjoyed Faith's dynamic with the other Deepscan slayers and her continued journey for atonement. I also liked seeing how the "new rules" for vampires played out in this scenario, and I hope we'll see more of similar consequences in future volumes.

As for the art, it was legible and often beautiful, but the likenesses varied to me. Sometimes the artist nailed the characters, other times not so much.

Overall, an entertaining but somewhat lackluster volume for me. Hoping to see more plot progression and creativity in the next one.

While this arch tries to grow form “monster of the week” to let’s build a story, overall it’s forgettable despite seeing familiar faces.

My rating is 3.5 stars.

Angel and Faith are still traveling their own separate roads. Faith is in South America on a rescue mission while Angel is in Magic Town with his crusade.

This was much better than the first collection. The artwork is still amazing and this issue has plenty of action sequences to satisfy the action enthusiast. The story lines are not the strongest as they seem to be more in a holding pattern and setting up the pieces in their respective positions for the ultimate story arc of this season. I did enjoy the inclusion of characters from the television shows and fans will enjoy the references to aspects of the show. And wait until you flip to the final page and see the cliffhanger. That is how to write a cliffhanger.

This is another enjoyable collection and does it job. It has put its pieces into play and it has setup the following issues. I am looking forward to those and I believe those issues is when this season will really start to soar.

It took until this second volume of season 10 for me to realize how bad of an idea it was to split up Angel and Faith. It not only costs us the interplay that made season 9 so fun, but it also results in a badly fractured comic that jumps between the plots within rhyme or reason.

As for the story itself, it's built on a strong basis of good continuity. Angel sees the return of Amy and Faith gets to deal with her Riley issues. Yet somehow Gischler manages to make that boring. Or, at least, very mundane. The stories don't have spark or tension, just forward motion.

In the end, the Faith story has some interesting bits, but the Angel story is just a dull series of fights ending with a deus ex machina, and none of it's that great, which is sadly my continued experience with Gischler's comics.

There are two unrelated stories here; Faith in South America trying to rescue Finn (who was trying to rescue his wife), and Angel dealing with a troubling request from witch Amy. The stories are both enjoyable if uninspired, getting most of their strength from the familiar characters more than actual plot. Neither story is bad, but they're not setting the world alight, either. The artwork is pretty good throughout, and I like the way Amy's magic is portrayed. But I've got to say, the most surprising part of this issue for me was the tease for the next issue; I'm very intrigued and look forward to finding out what was happening there. Otherwise, this is a good if uninspired continuation of the Buffyverse.

Much more engaging than the first arc, by far. Keeping Angel and Faith separate for a while does make sense, even if it's a little annoying, but you're basically getting two separate plots for the price of one by having them halfway across the world from each other. Both plots have their good and bad points, I do like how they're both tying up loose ends from the Buffy canon, as well as tying into the ongoing plot over in Buffy Season 10 too, plus there's a great cliffhanger ending to boot. Will Conrad's art remains strong, and his Deodato-lite reputation remains intact.

ok, so I'm fine with all the magic town stuff, that is fun. I have a problem with the faith storyline in this book.

so she's working for deepscan and she's assigned to a rockstar bodyguard gig. here are your briefing papers faith. oh no, faith doesn't like homework. I mean, how predictable is this? because she didn't do the reading, she screws it up. but that's ok, here's another assignment for you - finding riley finn. apparently she still feels hella guilty for sleeping with riley in buffy's body when they switched even though that was a million years ago and now she has to SAVE HIM to make it up to him. I don't really know why we're having facile conversations about forgiveness at this point in the series, didn't angel cover redemption with her during the angel tv show?

first of all, ugh, riley. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. he is one of my least favorite characters in the buffyverse. he's so military and clean cut and his relationship with his wife is so perfect and oh the drama of running operations together all the time. this time, she goes missing and he goes awol after her. yada yada, big pharmaceutical company in the amazon basin skirting for plants to use to base new drugs on. deepscan goes down along with the company CEO's daughter, because her dad is also missing. of course, she's allowed on all the missions just because she insists. off they go into the jungle, they're suddenly attacked by a band of indigenous warriors and bam, they start shooting.

already I find this shocking, just the optics of an amazon tribe being shot at by a paramilitary force. these are my good guys? spoiler alert, luckily they turn out to be vampires so it's all ok.

and then someone - I think it was riley's precious wifey - is talking about them and she says, yeah, they're vamps, but primitive. WHAT? are you freaking serious right now? amazonian tribal vampires are "primitive"? compared to what? they're not zompires - I'm not sure if they're classic or new coke dracula powers vampires, but because they're tribal people they're primitive?

I found that whole angle unnecessary and shocking. the opening fire - ok, it was an attack and guns are a big deal in deepscan, there's a whole long bit of faith learning how to shoot. I would have felt better if there was a conversation later - given how heavy handed the dialogue has been in this season of the comics as far as learning and growing, just go ahead and have someone say, wow, thank god they were vampires because the optics of mowing down amazon tribal people wasn't sitting well with me. but the primitive bit - that was purely unnecessary and ugly. I expect better.

in the end, it was just the one line, so I didn't repudiate the whole volume, I marked it down to three stars. otherwise, the angel stuff is pretty fun. it brings in the angle of him taking direction from unseen powers again. angel is often a pawn of prophecy etc. and it doesn't always serve him well. we'll see how this turns out.

Ugh. Still not a fan of both storylines, especially the Faith one. The last issue of the volume is, again, the best, but also the most worrying. I really start to like Nadira, especially because she finally turned Amy back into a rat. God, do I hate Amy and her plan in this arc, by the way. But this issue also worries me because they didn't destroy the the jug with Warren remains, and that opens a possibility for that douchebag to come back alive again, which would just be the worst. And then there is the very last page, where another major character gets resurrected out of the blue.

See, I hate this toying with life and death in Buffy comics. In the TV shows, nobody ever came back from the dead except for Buffy herself, and that came with a huge price. Death was permanent. It was always heartbreaking. It always mattered. But here, in comics, everyone dies, everyone gets resurrected. That was one of the biggest sins of Season 8 in the first place, the way they casually brought Warren back from the dead, then killed off Giles, only to get him resurrected again in Season 9 — which, in fairness, was handled much more respectfully and came with an interesting twist for the character, even though I do miss his Anthony Head resemblance now. But still, this all just doesn't feel like a part of the Buffy canon, nor that it should be. Sadly, where Season 9 was mostly a success, at least this half of Season 10 so far is a failure.

Ugh, it's like they are actually trying to make the worst comic in the world after making season nine so awesome. Riley, Sam, and Faith in the jungle NO THANK YOU. Angel in London, oh, excuse me, "Magic Town," with Amy the Rat... NO! Not only is their separate storylines weak, but what it appears they are setting up is totally lame. Bring back the season nine awesome! Fire these new hacks!

After so long since being in this world, it was fantastic to come back to it.

Just like last time, I found the fact that Angel and Faith were on different continents a bit jarring, but it was better knowing that Faith would be back in London by the end of it. And this one really meshed the themes that were going on in both what Angel and Faith were facing. It was really cool how a conversation had between two characters in London would mesh so well with what Faith was currently doing.

In this case, that's trying to find Finn and, in the process, coming across a host of primitive vampires who--for some reason not explained--are able to stand sunlight. Faith doesn't question this, of course, just does her job and gets out of there with both Finn and his wife Sam. Having done that, she apologises to him for what happened between them in season 4.

I actually found this reunion a lot more satisfying than the one between Oz and the rest of the team in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Retreat, back in season 8. I think the reason for that is that I didn't enjoy Riley as much on the show and therefore didn't have anything in the way of expectations for how an appearance from him would look. In fact, he actually gave Faith some very good advice with regards to how she needs to apologise to herself, not him, not Buffy, and try to do better each day as the sort of person she wants to be.

It's the kind of holier than thou advice that really pissed me off about Riley and showed he didn't belong with the rest of the Scooby Gang, but now that everyone else is getting older and, I guess, catching up to him in terms of maturity, it didn't rankle so much. Also, Faith has always had that bit more life experience than the rest of the Gang, which is why she teams so well with Angel probably.

Over in London, Angel is dealing with Amy and her jar of Warren that fell into sludge around the time that magic went away. Of course, here in Magic Town, Amy is back on the magics and not even trying a little bit to not be evil. She's imagining another big showdown with Willow at the end of this, which is epically ruined by the appearance of Nadira.

Nadira is a cool character who was friends with Faith before this, and never appeared on the series. But I love her so much. She is basically hosting the magic of Magic Town within her, and sort of takes the position that Lorne held as an advice giver who is sort of part of the team, but also apart from it too.

Angel and Nadira save the day at the end of things, but in the very last shot we have an unexplained and sudden appearance on the street of... Fred. So, of course I had to keep reading.

Faith agrees to take one more job from Kennedy's Deepscan, a slayer based version of Blackwater. I was calling them slayer bodyguards but now they're assisting the US military in other countries, so private mercenaries they are. Anyway, the job is to save Riley who Faith suddenly needs to apologize to for "deceiving him." They never use the word rape to describe what she did in season 4, but they at least recognize how horrible it was. Anyway, Faith is assisting an American pharmaceutical company working with the US military in South America to free the CEO (and Sam and Riley) from a South American tribe of... sigh... "primitive vampires."

Sigh

Alright, Do we really need to talk about racism? And colonialism? And America's history in South America? I'd really rather not. Can I just call this racist and we'll all move on? Nobody reads these reviews anyway, so I'm not sure what I'm worried about. Okay, this is racist. Really racist. I spent the whole book waiting for the twist. For Faith to switch sides or something. Nothing, the American CEO turned vampire fled to the tribe because they're more accepting of vampires. They then did exactly whatever he wanted. After he dies the company itself and Deepscan continue unquestioned. Add American Military propaganda to the list of charges next to racist. Disgusting.

If Deepscan ever returns I hope it's as the villain in a story where Buffy shuts it down.

While Faith is doing her Rambo thing, Angel is still in Magic Town. He runs into Amy. It's really dull. He talks to Nadira a lot; she's nothing like Nadira and they should have just introduced a new character. Amy is dealt with. I think we're at least free from her. I hate this book. Moving on.

3.5. honestly? if Riley goes missing that shouldn’t be any of our business, idc what happens to that man.

neither of their separate adventures were particularly good. Amy continues to be annoying and I truly cannot believe she kept warrens remains in a jar. someone needs to break them bc if that bitch comes back… and again faith rescuing Riley was annoying. while i do like faith finally apologizing for what she did and taking ownership of that moment (something that btvs seems to gloss over). i don’t necessarily agree that faith is only apologizing for herself, i think it’s an important step for her to acknowledge how fucked up it was and want to make amends. but Riley had one point that apologizing doesn’t change anything, that faith has to make the decision to be that new person every day and live with her past. anyway I still hate Riley, shame they tried to make me care about rescuing him at all.

anyways faith and angel need to reunite and there needs to be more fun in these books. am excited for Koh joining them and Illyria/Fred’s return!

Definitely an improvement on the last volume. Throwing Faith in the jungle searching for Riley & Sam actually gave some purpose to Kennedy’s dumb company, and Mai & Reese Zane are solid new characters. (Would love to see Faith date either of them?) The return of Amy is better treatment than she got in season 8 (or 6 for that matter), even if I still don’t get the romance between her and Warren. And even though Angel & Faith are still doing their own things this volume, it works this time.

The art is still gorgeous, and does a great job with characters that have ended up looking pretty generic when done by other artists, like Amy or Sam. (I’d love to see Conrad draw Harmony at some point.)

This is what happens when you write yourself SO many plot threads for the Season 9 Buffyverse that you turn a good series into 'the cleanup crew'. Old plots get tied up and characters tread water, essentially, until the writers come back with a new idea to bring everyone together again.

The good:
Bringing back Amy and Warren into the Buffy comics...
Faith and her 'I'm sorry' world tour...

The bad:
Angel having NOTHING to do but 'sheriff' MagicTown
Nadira and her...'I talk to MagicTown and we're buddies'
All things Nadira

This was definitely a stronger arc than the first arc of this season of Angel and Faith. Good to see Riley again and a clever way to bring Faith back to London at the close of it! Two arcs without Angel and Faith being together in a book about Angel and Faith is a bit long though.

Good to see Amy. One thing I’m sad about is that in the rest of the Buffy/Angel series (with only 2 comics of season 12 left) we won’t get a satisfying end to her story, at least most likely.

I really love Riley and Sam, especially their dynamic together. Love the idea of a happily married husband-wife adventure team; there aren't enough of those stories being told in satisfying ways. Absolutely love the artwork in the Angel & Faith comics -- both the inkwork and the color work are stunningly beautiful.

This was among my favorites in the series so far. I enjoyed the return of Riley and Sam and could appreciate Faith's desire to make amends with Riley. Although I liked Angel and Faith as a team, I am also glad to see Faith going her own way and making her own mark. She was helpful to Angel early on, but it would have been disappointing to see her as a sidekick for the whole series.

Switching Gage to the Buffy series has certainly left Buffy more engaging than Angel & Faith. The art in this season isn't up to par. I didn't care for the military route, bringing back characters that never did much for me. The character surprise at the end hopefully allows for some interesting expanding, but my expectations aren't high for this series. I look forward to Buffy more.

Picking up the pace from the first volume, Angel runs into some familiar faces in Magic Town while Faith is on a whole other continent fighting vampires that can now go out in the daylight. This volume made it more clear on where things are going and gave some purpose to both characters storylines.
