Flash Gordon: The Storm Queen of Valkir proves that the strip not only survived Alex Raymond’s departure, but found bold new energy under writer Don Moore and artist Austin Briggs. Freed from direct comparison to the Raymond years, this era embraces scale, spectacle, and relentless momentum, pushing Flash Gordon to new heights—and depths—both literally and imaginatively.
Spanning four years of non-stop science-fiction action-adventure, this collection is a whirlwind of exotic settings and extravagant danger. Flash faces a vivid rogues’ gallery: Kang the Cruel, son of Ming and usurper of Barin’s crown; the ferocious Queen Valker; and an endless parade of monstrous wonders including giant birds, lizards, sea-beasts, rock men, wolfmen, and nightmarish gas spiders. The sheer variety of threats keeps the strip fresh, inventive, and gloriously unrestrained.
Austin Briggs’ artwork, while different from Raymond’s classical elegance, brings its own strengths—dynamic motion, bold staging, and a sense of kinetic storytelling that suits the pulp-driven intensity of these adventures. Don Moore’s scripts are lean, energetic, and unapologetically adventurous, keeping Flash firmly in his role as defender of the innocent and scourge of tyrants.
The Storm Queen of Valkir is exuberant, imaginative, and endlessly entertaining science-fantasy. It stands as proof that Flash Gordon is bigger than any single creator—a timeless adventure series capable of evolving while remaining thrilling at its core.

Flash Gordon is formulaic. That being said this one was really formulaic. Still fun, but not quite as good as the others.
