Rate this book
IN THE OLD CITY, THE DEAD HAVE STORIES TO TELL.

Riding a wave of success after her last two high-profile cases, Sidney Stone is on the verge of becoming St. Augustine’s most sought-after private investigator. Her next client, however, presents a unique uncovering missing jewelry concealed among a deceased woman’s effects. What seems like a straightforward job soon turns into a labyrinthine mystery, further complicated by the woman’s hidden secrets.

With the help of Leo Roberts, a teenager gifted with the ability to see and communicate with the dead, Sid embarks on the hunt for the missing jewels. What she uncovers is a maze of valuable treasure, mysterious love letters, a long-running con, dangerous mafia connections—and, of course, murder.

As the duo navigates this treacherous terrain, they discover that people will go to great lengths to exploit opportunities, even at the cost of hurting others. The Old City is filled with modern-day pirates, both living and dead. Sid and Leo find them lurking in the most unexpected places, including frighteningly close to home.

Missing jewels and a pirate ghost...can it get any more intriguing than that? Totally loved the characters in this novel. Even though I haven't read the first two books in the series, I was able to enjoy this story from start to finish. Brief referenences to past events were enough to help me understand how these multi-layered characters got to where they were. And how Sid and Leo resolve their personal dramas is as compelling as the complex mystery they have to solve.
