A remote mining town, an aspiring journalist, and the reformed convict who saves her life.
When Clara Alexander returned from finishing school to Virginia City she had two to become a reporter and make peace with the father who betrayed her mother. But even in the West, there is no room for her in the newsroom or in the family her father made when he married his mistress. Clara is forced to take desperate measures to prove her worth to an editor—including a reckless venture into a dangerous mine shaft.
Reformed convict Beau Vulpe lives a quiet life of obscurity in a remote mining town in Nevada. When he rescues a beautiful woman from a sweltering mine shaft, he’s welcomed into her home as a hero, only to discover that they are the same family he deeply wronged the summer before. Now, with winter's grip choking the mountain town and rumors of mines going bust, he is forced to stay, praying Clara won’t discover the truth before the spring thaw.
As Clara pursues her dreams of writing for the renowned Territorial Enterprise, she continually crosses paths with the mysterious Frenchman who saved her life and is drawn to him a little more with each interaction. Beau finds himself not only falling for the lovely lady but befriending her family as well. Can he protect his freedom and atone for his wrongs without losing his heart in the process? And what about Clara—will her attraction toward Beau Vulpe lead to the disappointment her mother warned her about?
This is book 3 in the series. I recommend reading them in order, to know who all the characters are and the continuing story. The MMC, Beau, first appears in book one. He is a convict on the run. He ends up helping Clara by saving her from bad situations. Clara is trying to be a reporter but it’s hard since she is a woman. Clara has family problems that she has a hard time with. I liked Beau and Clara together, it was a little quick for what I prefer but I still enjoyed their relationship. The Christian content was really good. I loved seeing characters from the other 2 books again. Overall a good story and I recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

With unhewn emotion and unvarnished faith, KyLee Woodley has crafted an unflinching tale of grit and grace!
Set in 1870’s Nevada, the third Outlaw Hearts novel is rife with complex characters, family drama, and harrowing danger. Woodley’s atmospheric prose bring the old west to life, kicking up dust as she takes readers on a wild ride across the pages.
If you fancy an arresting read, I reckon you’ll take a shine to The Convict’s Courtship!
📚 Outlaw Hearts Series 📖 1) The Bandit's Redemption 📖 2) The Bounty Hunter's Surrender 📖 3) The Convict's Courtship
A man trying to live differently while still carrying what others remember about him. A woman who sees that clearly and does not pretend it does not matter.
That alone held my attention.
What I appreciated most is how carefully this relationship unfolds. Nothing feels rushed. There is space to watch. Space to question. Space to notice the small things that reveal who someone truly is. Trust is not handed over easily, and it should not be.
That made every step forward feel earned.
I found myself watching the choices more than the words. The restraint. The consistency. The quiet determination to do what is right even when it would be easier to fall back into what is familiar.
That is where the story really shines.
The heroine is thoughtful in a way that feels steady and grounded. She does not ignore what she sees. She weighs it. She considers what is wise. And she allows her decisions to reflect both truth and care.
I respected that about her.
Faith is present, but it is lived out in a way that feels natural to the story. It shows up in accountability, in second chances, and in the slow, steady work of becoming someone different than you once were.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is overlooked.
I was very invested in the outcome. I cared about the direction of their lives … that they would continue choosing what is right. That the change taking place would last.
A life truly given to Christ does not remain the same! What a story!
I received the eARC of this book from the author, publisher, and Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Since meeting the enigmatic Beau on the pages of The Bandit’s Redemption, I have wanted his story. I’ve been calling him morally gray because that’s how he’s appeared in the background of the first two books in this series – meaning he’s not clearly good or clearly evil. We’ve seen him take part in kidnappings and bank robberies at someone else’s instructions, but we’ve also seen him protect the victims to the best of his ability and show up when help is needed. He’s best friends with the heroine of book one and the hero of book two, and they’ve proven to be characters we can root for. So I was eager for Beau to have his time in the spotlight in The Convict’s Courtship – one that would allow us to see his true heart and more of his backstory… and author KyLee Woodley definitely did not disappoint. Learning the heartbreaks and sorrows that Beau carried with him from France to the States made his actions in the previous books – and where he falls on the side of good vs evil – much more clear. Seeing the depth of his integrity shine through in his interactions with Clara, her father, their extended family, and the community clarified things even further. I always suspected Beau would be my favorite character in the series once I got to know him, and Woodley went & proved me right.
Clara Alexander is the kind of heroine whose pursuit of her dreams reminds me to express gratitude for the trailblazing females of history. The ones who paved the way at the cost of their reputations and their comfort for women like my grandmother, my mother, myself, and my nieces to live with more freedom than they had. Like, being able to wear jeans without causing a scandal. Or being able to work in basically any field we choose. Granted, Clara’s passion for journalism puts her in harm’s way more than once in this story, including the opening scenes, but she’s so determined that you can’t help but hope she succeeds. Getting to know her heart and backstory too, not just Beau’s, illuminated her own decisions and, in the process, we’re treated to touching redemption stories in characters adjacent to her as well. I also loved the chemistry between Clara and Beau, even when she drove him crazy ignoring his advice and even when he drove ME crazy planning to leave, and their protectiveness of each other warmed my heart.
Bottom Line: The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley gave me not only a story I’d been waiting for – Beau’s story – but a sweet & swoony romance, Wild West suspense, and an inspiring tale of redemption besides. Themes of forgiveness, restoration, true worth and repentance share space with moments of humor, dangerous mining work, family drama, falling in love, unlikely friendships, murder, and outlaws too. As Woodley peels back the layers of her complicated hero, she skillfully pairs Beau with a courageous (if sometimes reckless) heroine who refuses to give up on him. I loved their love story, from their unusual meeting to where we part ways with these compelling characters, but most of all I loved the work God does in their lives (courtesy of the author, of course). Definitely put The Convict’s Courtship on your TBR list, but start with books one & two first so you can best appreciate what brought Beau from there to here.
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I read via Kindle Unlimited.)
I got caught up in The Convict's Courtship right away and felt connected to Clara Alexander, the main character. She starts the story in a hot mine shaft, thankful that what touched her leg was just a rat. Yikes! Clara is very different then me, (I would’ve had to have been sedated) but she’s easy to relate to and cheer for.
Stories about strong women trying to find their place in a world run by men are really motivating. Back in the late 1800s, it was tough and challenging to do so-called “men’s jobs.” But Clara is tough, which is probably why Beau is attracted to her. Both of them face big challenges and watching them grown is exciting and uplifting.
With a mix of mystery, danger, and sweet romance, this faith-filled redemption story is an enjoyable, satisfying read.
First Line: She had really gotten herself into trouble this time. Series: Outlaw Hearts, book 3 Genre: Christian Historical Romance, Western Author: Kylee Woodley Page Count: 349
#CoverLoverBookReview received a review copy of this book. Opinions are my own.
This is quite an entertaining story with historical facts that heighten the curiosity of readers. I enjoyed following Clara on her journey. She desires to be a reporter but finds that some men don’t believe a woman has any business being one. The time period does emphasize that women were more suited to staying home rather than being out and about doing men’s work.
Beau is a good character with a checkered past who wants to move forward in life. He carries guilt and pain that does at times cause him not to trust. His secret may cause a certain relationship to stall but he so wants to find redemption. We all at some time have done something we are ashamed of. I found Beau to be intriguing and I liked how he slowly came to see that faith was important.
The book gives us a look at how God directs our path and helps us as we desire to change. Steadfast in her faith Clara brings a refreshing look at how we should never judge each other. I appreciated how she helped women who others shun because they lived a life that many didn’t approve of.
I enjoyed getting to know the characters better as mystery keeps the story going in a direction that held my attention. I do think that reading the first two books in this series would be helpful. Will Clara find out Beau’s secret? Can Beau find forgiveness? Grab a copy of the book to get these answers.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley is a Christian Historical Romance.
Set in the rugged mining town of Virginia City, this historical romance follows Clara Alexander, a young woman determined to become a journalist despite the limitations placed on women of her time. Returning home from finishing school, Clara hopes to repair her strained relationship with her father while also pursuing her dream of writing for the Territorial Enterprise. Unfortunately, neither goal comes easily. Her father has remarried the woman who caused her parents’ separation, and the local newsroom has little interest in hiring a female reporter.
Clara’s determination leads her to take a dangerous risk in an attempt to prove herself to an editor, resulting in a reckless trip into a mine shaft that nearly costs her life. Thankfully, she is rescued by Beau Vulpe, a quiet man with a mysterious past.
Beau is a reformed convict trying to keep a low profile in the Nevada mining town. His act of heroism brings him into Clara’s world, but it also places him dangerously close to the very family he wronged the previous summer. As Beau grows closer to Clara and her family, he wrestles with guilt and the fear that the truth about his past will eventually come to light.
There were several elements of this story that I genuinely enjoyed. The historical setting of Virginia City and the mining culture added an interesting backdrop, and Clara’s ambition to become a journalist made her an engaging and determined heroine. Her persistence in the face of rejection was one of the story’s stronger elements.
Beau’s character was also intriguing, especially his struggle with redemption and his desire to live differently than he had in the past. His internal conflict added depth and helped create some of the book’s most compelling moments.
That said, some parts of the story moved more slowly than expected, and certain plot points felt a bit predictable. There were moments when the pacing lagged for me, which made it harder to stay fully invested in the story. While the romance between Clara and Beau had its sweet moments, some parts of the book didn’t always feel as developed as they could have been.
Even so, the novel does offer meaningful themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the possibility of redemption. Readers who enjoy Western settings and stories about overcoming past mistakes may still find parts of this book appealing.
Overall, while the story had some strong characters and an interesting historical setting, it was a mixed reading experience. Still, fans of historical Christian romance may appreciate the themes of grace, perseverance, and the hope of a fresh start.
So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Unexpected delight greeted me on the pages of Kylee Woodley’s book, The Convict’s Courtship. The robust and well-developed characters infuse this historical romance with a tender, easily understood connection to their struggles. Clara's wavering self-esteem and drive to succeed in a male-dominated world revealed a hidden resilience, making her an anomaly in her era. Beau, a man burdened by hidden sorrows yet possessing an unshakeable moral compass, lent a touching resonance to the narrative.
With faith as a central theme, the narrative explores prejudice and judgment, drawing parallels to the biblical saying about casting the first stone. By the end, the story expertly crafted a beautiful tapestry, demonstrating the power of understanding and reconciliation between the characters.
The writing was so clear and concise, and the story flowed at such a pleasant pace, that the book was a breeze to get through. It was captivating, yet it also held an element of mystery and suspense. The atmosphere of the mining town, located close to Virginia City, vibrated with the authentic essence of 19th-century Western life. This is the third book of the series. While they can be read as stand-alone, I think the narrative is greatly enhanced if they are read in order. This one is perfect for anyone with a fondness for historical romance.
I received a complimentary copy from the author but was not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Convict’s Courtship is a wonderful foray into the past with some suspense and some romance, plus some history too. I love a good historical fiction that isn’t just pure romance. You need a little suspense to move the plot along.
This is the third book in a series. As always, I recommend you read them in order, but you could read this as a standalone if you absolutely must.
There is a lot of family drama in this novel. A father who cheated on his wife, who is also a mother, then she dies of a broken heart, he marries the mistress, who has a baby just a few months later. And then to top it off, the daughter of the first marriage gets sent to finishing school. Oh, and that’s just the beginning of the drama!
Beau is a convict on the run, but he’s also the hero in the story.
Clara is the daughter. She’s determined to make her way as a journalist and is enamoured with the female suffrage women who have gone before her. What happens when she’s forbidden to do something? She also wants to find out some things about her family.
Danger and love abound!

I enjoyed the first two books in this series. For some reason, I didn't connect as much with the characters in this book as I did in the other books. It is probably just me! In the beginning chapters, I didn't really know what was happening but then I figured it out! Beau was first an outlaw in the first book and then in the second book he was trying to redeem himself but was a background character. In this book, he's the main character. I grew to like him very much and was rooting for him! He was a convict that had escaped from prison for a specific reason, but we don't find that out until much later in the story. His whole purpose throughout the story is redemption. He wants to get forgiveness from Clara's family for his past crimes. She doesn't even know what they are because she doesn't know his past, but she is finding herself falling in love with him! I'm not sure how I felt about Clara. She really wanted to be a reporter but women at that time weren't reporters so she has an uphill battle and took chances. There is a lot of danger and Beau seems to always be trying to stay one step ahead of her! I felt she took too many chances. There were a lot of issues in her home life too. All in all, a good story but a lot going on and the main theme - redemption - is a very good one.
The Convict’s Courtship by author KyLee Woodley is a Christian historical novel. This is the third installment in the Outlaw Hearts series. It would be best to read the first two books before this one, but this could be read as a stand alone.
Set in the mining town of Virginia City, this is the story of Clara Alexander. She is a young woman who wants to become a journalist. After finishing school, Clara returns home and hopes to repair her strained relationship with her father while pursuing her dream of writing. Beau Vulpe is a reformed convict. He works in the mine and helped Clara, which threw them together.
The writing is excellent. Author Woodley mixes romance, suspense, and intrigue to keep her story moving at a good pace. There are twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. The Christian message is beautiful. Historical details will please history buffs, and all readers will be able to glean some information. The family drama is heavy and interesting.
I highly recommend this book. It is an enjoyable read with themes of grace, perseverance, and second chances. There is a lot to dissect and discuss if reading groups want to grab this for a club selection.
It earns a 4 star rating from me. I received a complimentary copy from Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.
In this story we have two characters that are hurting and running away from past circumstances. Beau is a Frenchman who has lost much and been through too much. However, he is a gentle and caring man, and he is thankful for his faith that has changed him into a better man. Yet, he still feels there is no place for him. He is still running from his past in France and the one in the United States. He just wants to keep his head down and work at the mine earning enough money to see his way for a new start to Canada. Until he meets Clara.
Clara is a young woman who is trying to fit into a man's world as a reporter. She has an uphill battle, but one she is willing to risk everything for. She is also carrying some deep scars from her family drama that hold her back and have skewered her views on love and life. When Beau rescues her and becomes a more prominent figure in her life, she begins to have a fresh new outlook.
There is a lot that these two must come to terms with and overcome. Together though, they will be stronger.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
The Convict’s Courtship is written by KyLee Woodley. Well, this book is part of a series. I have not read the other books and did not have any issues following along. One of the things that I love with historical fiction. Books is being transported back in time. The author has done a really great job and bringing remote mining town to life.
Clara Alexander has returned back home from finishing school. She soon finds out that despite being known as the wild West there is no war room for a woman in the newsroom. Her whole life has also changed since her father has now built a new family with his mistress. You gotta love when family drama is preparative throughout a story.
Beau is a reformed convict who enjoys his life in the quiet town. He ends up rescuing Clara when she ventures into a dangerous mind shaft. He doesn’t want her to know about his past. He wants to show her that he has a changed, man I really like the chemistry between these two characters.
The book is well written. The storyline is engaging. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
I’ve read other books related to Virginia City, Nevada and enjoyed learning about its history. This book provided lots of historical detail while taking the reader on an emotional and adventurous ride. Clara Alexander had a lot to grapple with despite her wealthy background and social class. Beau Vulpe also had much to deal with, but in a very different way. This opposite-side-of-the-tracks romance was fraught with difficulty and danger, propelling the characters through much angst before reaching a happy conclusion. While this book could be read as a stand alone, I would recommend reading the series in order as there were several mentions and appearances of characters and incidents from the previous two books. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and felt the story would have been clearer had I started with the first book. Those who’ve read books by Mary Connealy, Karen Witemeyer and Kathleen Denly would really enjoy this book.
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.
The Convicts Courtship (Outlaw Hearts Book 3) by Kylee Woodley has a supporting character from the first book as the main lead character now receiving his own story. Reformed convict Beau Vulpe meets Clara Alexander when she is lost in the miner where he works. What an unusual meeting that leads to many more encounters with this daring if at times reckless young woman. No matter how much Beau tries to avoid the people in the silver mines while quietly doing his mining job, he is continually thrown into the society mix while also trying to keep Clara safe. She on the other hand runs headlong into unsafe situations. Beau has his own problems that he doesn’t have the solutions, but God does. So Clara and Beau have struggles and lessons to be learned so that they can have a bright future. I found myself pulling for them to find that future together. God’s will, forgiveness, the need to be loved and acceptance of the past so that the future is not robbed of the joy it could hold are all part of this story.
This novel is saturated with drama and complexities. Beau is a man of many skilled learned through a life of hardship, pain, and loss. He is running from past mistakes that are determined to catch him. In his heart, he longs to be the man that is pleasing to God, to have peace in life, and for someone to see him for who he is. Clara is a feisty, strong-willed, stubborn woman with a heart consumed with anger and grief. She wants to know that God cares for her as He once did.
Together they battle for answers to unsolved mysteries. Beau wants Clara safe; Clara wants Beau’s love. They ride the waves of many victories and crash down with hard disappointments. They both face sacrifices to have hope for the future.
I did enjoy reading their story. It was an emotional roller coaster at time. I’m glad they found answers and happiness in the end. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
I have loved the books from the Outlaw Heart series by KyLee Woodley and was happy to have the opportunity to read the third installment called The Convict's Courtship. I loved going back in time to the early days of the state of Nevada and meeting Clara and Beau. I thought their story was a delight to read and I enjoyed taking this adventure with them.
I am going to give The Convict's Courtship five stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean historical romance particularly from the Western era of the United States. I would love to read more like this one from KyLee Woodley in the near future and see where her imagination takes her readers to next.
I received a digital copy of KyLee Woodley's The Convict's Courtship from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
I liked this conclusion to the series. I liked that we got to see Beau find his match with a spicy lady. I liked how we also got to see his repentance and him being forgiven of his past. I liked seeing the characters from the previous books and how they extended grace towards Beau and forgave him. I also liked how we learned more about Beau’s past and what put him on the path he was on. I also liked how we saw Clara and Beau connect over losing someone and seeing them fall in love as they struggled to know how they could make a future work. I thought it was a good story.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
The Convict’s Courtship by KyLee Woodley is book three in the Outlaw Hearts series. Clara has made her way into a mine shaft dressed as a man to get a news story, when she is rescued by Beau. Helping her has cost him his job yet he is determined to see her safely home. This is a nicely written story that has many twists and turns that keep the story interesting. I enjoyed having Beau as one of the main characters in this story as we have seen him change through the series. Beau and Clare are both strong, caring characters in this story. I enjoyed how determined Clare is to be a reporter in a time when it was not something women did. I enjoyed her strong, independent personality and her determination. I enjoyed the theme of redemption and forgiveness that is written through the story. The story also contains mystery and suspense with who killed Beau’s boss and who is causing problems for Beau. While this is part of a series and background information on Beau is in the first two book, the author does a fine job of bringing in the background information as the story develops. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story, this is my honest review.
This was a great clean historical romance! I loved the fascinating tidbits about mining and also about the war between Germany and France! The realistic portrayal of the differences between classes and the hardships that many faced in the American west at the time were very well documented as well. I loved the romance that the main characters had to fight for, and the immense character growth that both of these people obtained! The ending was so satisfying! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.
Both of the main characters, Clara and Beau won me over right away. I loved Clara’s gumption and what hardships she went through to do what women in that day weren’t allowed to do. Beau was her rescuer many times, starting with the depths in the mine. He was a real hero with a reformed heart but still in trouble in the sight of the law. What they both go through to meet their goals takes a very strong will. Lovely ending too! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review.
The Convict's Courtship is third in the "Outlaw Hearts" series. I found it to be an enjoyable read, which kept me captivated all throughout the story.
I enjoyed watching the spiritual growth in both Clara and Beau, as well as their relationship with each other.
If you enjoy historical fiction set in the Old West, with a touch of romance and a dose of faith, then this will be the perfect addition to your TBR list.
Loved this book! Clara is someone who just wants to reconnect with her family and Beau is trying to redeem himself, as we’ve slowly seen over the past two books. Their interactions with each other are realistic and relatable to readers, and the history incorporated throughout the story is very informative and well-researched.
I don’t understand why Christian fiction so frequently glosses over cheating men. Clara’s father never apologized or repented of his adultery or for being with his mistress when his wife died waiting for him. This book was more concerned about Clara’s anger than her father being an abusive cheater.
Virginia City, Nevada was just one of the booming mine towns in 1875. It was a hot, dangerous job that was all underground where frequently a strike would hit a hot spring causing the tunnel to flood. This resulted in many lives lost and very bad burns for those who could not get out quick enough. For a convict, this was probably the only job to be found.
Clara Alexander had a dream to be a reporter, something unheard of for a woman. In the attempt to find a story, she goes into a mine. Unfortunately her story is stolen by a young man, making her question herself. Beau Vulpe also has a dream - to put the past behind him. Will either or both find their dreams fulfilled? This early copy of Outlaw Heart Book 3 was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
If you enjoy stories set in the West rich in historical tidbits and faith then I highly recommend KyLee Woodley books! This is the third book in the Outlaw Hearts series and I definitely think you should read these in order as you will encounter the characters in the previous book in this one especially our main male character who I met in the first book and now has his own story. He is a convict on the run and meets Clara who’s a reporter which at that time was not prevalent.
Beau obviously has a past but he’s trying to move forward. I really liked his storyline and the growth that he went through in the story. Clara at times got a bit on my nerves but she was just so passionate about accomplishing her goals of reporting that eventually I understood where she was coming from and grew to enjoy her character.
The story is full of redemption and shows us how God directs our paths. If you are looking for a new series to dive into I definitely recommend this one!
I received a copy of this book from the author. All views expressed are my own.
This book was such a pleasure to read! I loved the Virginia City mining history. The plot is twisty and suspenseful, full of surprises and an amazing, multi-layer mystery! The characters are so well written, and I loved how dimensional they were! The faith struggles and inner conflicts felt so real. This book is perfect for anyone who loves the Wild West, reformed outlaws, and the early days of female journalists! This can be read as a standalone, but better in order of the series. Five stars! I received an e-arc copy from Celebrate Lit Tours to read and honestly review. All opinions are mine and mine alone.
