The Puck Contract

Rate this book
The contract said "pretend." My heart didn't get the memo.

Groover
The fan fictions were the last straw. As the only openly gay player on the team, I'm used to attention, but when fans start shipping me with my straight teammates, management has a "brilliant" solution: get a fake boyfriend to stabilize my image and secure a major sponsorship deal.

Enter Mateo—a broke anthropology student who doesn't know a hockey stick from a broomstick. He's supposed to be the perfect fake boyfriend: straight, temporary, and contractually obligated to keep things professional.

But when practice kisses start feeling too real and my heart races every time he wears my jersey, I realize I'm breaking the most important rule in the playbook: don't fall for the guy who's only here for the paycheck.

Mateo
The arrangement was supposed to be easy: Pretend to date a hockey player for three months, collect enough money to cover tuition, and move on with my life.

Easy went out the window the moment Groover's lips touched mine "for practice."

Suddenly I'm wearing his jersey backward for luck, getting jealous of his ex, and Googling "am I bi?" at 2 AM in incognito mode. What started as research into sports culture for my anthropology thesis is becoming a study in something I never expected.

With playoffs approaching and our contract ending, I have to make a choice: Walk away with my tuition paid and heart intact, or admit that somewhere between the fake kisses and real feelings, I've completely pucked up by falling for a man who thinks I'm just acting a part.

The Puck Contract is a low-angst, high-heat bi-awakening Hockey Romance. It’s book 1 of the Melting Ice series, and can be read as a stand-alone.

2.5 stars.

Cute concept, terribly inconsistent execution. Standard fake boyfriend under contract becomes something real trope. Did this not go through an editor? Or was this cobbled together from LLM outputs? Motivations weren't consistent or realistic and too much development happened off-screen.

Why is Mateo their first choice for the fake bf role? Groover is supposedly the first/only out gay NHL player, but at least three current and former team mates either are dating or have dated men. The contract is supposed to be hush-hush but constantly gets discussed in public, to the point where most of the secondary characters know about it because they overhear it being discussed by various parties. PR wants content for socials to make the relationship seem more established/older - how does a photoshoot accomplish this when there's no attempt at costume changes? All the photos are obviously from the same time. The timeline keeps shifting - the three month term is almost up when pr did their halfway mark checkin. Mateo describes coming out to his family following his first public appearances, followed by another coming out via video chat weeks later. And the biggest inconsistency, the third act breakup is caused by Mateo overhearing discussion of the contract and deciding it's a fake relationship - but he knew about the contract from the get-go, he had even been receiving periodic payments. That was the whole point. They'd even discussed that their feelings were not part of the contract. So why is it suddenly some kind of betrayal?

This is my first book by M.M Phoenix and I like the flow and airy writing. This has space to breath and I had a good time reading it. ✅

What happens when your team fake boyfriends you and you realize that he's actually perfect for you. What if then, your teammates accept and like him as one of their own? Then, you kiss, for practice, and he discovers he may not be as straight as he thought....
Add in the nosy press and paparazzi and developing feelings and you have a great story.

But.
The whole sponsorship thing..the way they had the power to decide a person's dating habits or otherwise. It felt so wrong. Just as bad as if they were controlling the gay player. And for that, points off.
I would have preferred Ansel say no to them and not them pulling the offer.
Plus, that ending was ..meh. So rushed and a little uninspired 🤔
Bad rom com stuff that was far from the good writing the rest of the book had.

this was good i got invested they were cute the story was easy to read and the the third act coflict was the stupidest thing i ever heard of. how is the contract both of you signed and were fully aware of AND the conversation you had REGARDING the timeline of your new relationship getting completely shadowed by...what? one of ur friends overhearing abt the contract from pr? did we forget that becker knew FROM THE START? also what does this have to do with groover having to do a whole grand gesture (that i fully skipped) he didnt do anything wrong??? idk but it was altogether a brainless scheme and unecessary. also if u ask me mateo was taking so fucking long to admit that he was into men but what do i know

That was surprisingly cute! I’ve read a lot of this author’s short erotic novellas so when there was an opportunity to read the ARC of their upcoming full length novel, I jumped on it!

We follow Groover who needs a fake boyfriend to secure a sponsorship deal. And so enters Mateo, a straight anthropology student needing the money. These two were adorable!!! Things progress slowly, feelings find their way into the fake relationship (I know, shocking!), and when the lines get truly blurred, these two become even cuter!

I won’t lie, I thought there would more heat to this book based on what I new of the author previous work, but the amount we get works just fine. I they take their time to explore this side of their relationship and it felt realistic.

The drama toward the end of the book kinda felt weird because to me they already discussed where they stood, but in the end it was cute and romantic (and resolved quickly!).

I loved the side characters!!! I cannot wait for the next book that promise to be hilarious!

DNF @ 94% (Stopped right before the end because it was literally so nonsensical)

Notes I took while reading:

The story was a little confusing at the start. Why did people act like they'd heard so much about Mateo when Groover hadn't heard or said shit until like ten minutes prior? Also, did the team really expect Groover and Mateo to just get along with absolutely ZERO research into whether or not they'd have chemistry? How does them saying "we want you to look stable with a LTR" equal "here's a STRAIGHT guy who's going to pretend to be your BF. We won't introduce you until your riding to a public event where you'll pretend to be in love." Very very weird choice.

The story on page 8:
Groover: "I've gone on like three dates in the past year!"

The story on page 27:
Groover: "I have a type?"
Washington: "Yeah, emotionally unavailable pretty boys who disappear after two weeks."

So did Washington meet all the people on the like "three dates" Groover went on and learn that they were all emotionally unavailable? Seemed unlikely. The only way that sentence makes sense is if Washington was aware of Groover's sexuality way before he came out AND was familiar with the men he dated (which wasn't mentioned and should've been if that was the case).

The story felt a bit lazy in how it made early key moments between Groover and Mateo happen off screen.

"Dude, you spent fifteen minutes taking me about how he organizes his hockey in a specific pattern before games." Would've been nice to see Mateo actually noticing Groover's rituals AND see him enthusiastically talk to his roommate about it.

"With him, you're just Groover again. Not the poster boy, not the trailblazer. Just you." Uhh, but we never see the "poster boy" or "trailblazer" side of Groover, so the comparison about how Groover is supposedly different now because of Mateo is empty and meaningless.

"Over the past few weeks, I've discovered that behind Groover's reserved exterior is a wickedly smart, surprisingly funny guy who listens like what I'm saying matters." Reserved exterior? When? Groover wasn't an open book, but I wouldn't say he was particularly reserved (at least we didn't see him being reserved enough to the point where it would be notable).

Was there ever a discussion between Groover and Mateo about Mateo's supposed straightness? I almost thought that Groover assumed Mateo was gay and that the revelation that he was straight was going to be a plot conflict because I couldn't recall a specific scene where they acknowledged it? Groover just drops the tidbit that he knew Mateo was straight when they were grinding up on each other.

The story was a bit weird about Groover being the gay NHL rep. Why was he getting so much focus when his teammate, Ace, was also gay and in a relationship? The lack of acknowledgement of the fact that Groover wasn't alone in being an out athlete was weird (unless Ace wasn't out, in which case it'd be weird considering how Devon appeared in nearly every scene with the hockey SOs).

I liked that Groover didn't try to downplay how he felt about Mateo after the makeout dare. I was disappointed that it wasn't Mateo specifically coming forward about his growing feelings, but them not creating a miscommunication and being honest was nice.

What I didn't like though, was Mateo going "What if I wanted to explore this? Without strings or expectations?" They'd gotten WAY past the point of "no strings, no expectations" since they'd already gotten to know each other far beyond acquaintances. The angle here should've been Groover being explicitly self-sacrificing, offering himself as a way for Mateo to explore his sexuality with the risk of Mateo not actually being into guys and breaking his heart in the process. And in addition to that, there should've been more scenes showing Mateo's confusion to emphasize an internal conflict about whether or not he could actually be in a relationship with a man to justify the selfishness he showed in asking for a no strings situation with a guy who he'd already forged a non-insignificant bond with.

The story really needed a consistency pass on whether or not Groover was sexually active with other men or not. Groover tells Mateo he's "basically a monk" with regards to bringing people home, but then the next chapter, Becker says that Mateo was "more than the usual hit-it-and-quit-it situation". What EXACTLY was Groover's status quo regarding sexual partners? Three dates in the past year, emotionally unavailable pretty boys with a two week shelf life, monk-like, or hit-it-and-quit-it?

I liked that we see Mateo explicitly trying to understand his evolving attraction to Groover (and men by extension). I wasn't initially a big fan of him being "straight" at the beginning because it kinda felt tacked on with how quickly he was showing himself to be attracted to Groover, but the scenes where he googles his confusion on their first makeout session and sexual encounter made the sexual awakening feel a bit more real. Love that the author didn't do the dumb GFY trope and instead actually committed to making Mateo bisexual.

I also really like how Groover and Mateo didn't just immediately go straight to anal, instead working their way up to it with less intimidating sexual acts first. It never feels right when a sexual awakening story has the MCs acting like experienced porn stars during their first few times having same sex sex.

That scene where Mateo surprises Groover after practice? 🥵

I also really liked how Mateo didn't try to being offended by one of Groover's exes who was being way too touchy and insulting.

I liked that the book has a scene where something as completely innocuous as Mateo accidentally wearing something backwards becomes a superstition after Groover's team wins. Even though this story is very hockey-lite, seeing the things surrounding it help make the setting feel more realized.

Mateo: "I'm confused about us. About what this is."

You literally met his family and both of you had expressed nothing but genuine romantic affection for each other. What about that is confusing?

"I don't know where the pretending stops and the real begins."

These two stopped all pretending sometime after their first frotting session. This weird uncertainty was melodramatic because the two had basically dropped the fake relationship thing.

Groover: "Is that what you think this is? Some kind of experiment?"

😒 This entire scene wouldn't have needed to happen if Groover and Mateo actually talked about what they were to each other instead of pulling that "no strings, no expectations" thing. The author probably wanted to play this as emotional, but it honestly just annoyed me because it's literally just a rehash of the conversation way back in chapter 19. If the story wanted this to actually be believable, then I needed scenes showing plausible deniability on both POVs (aka one sees the other doing something that could believably be interpreted as being casual/still continuing the fake relationship). You can't just have Groover and Mateo be inarguably genuine the entire time then shove in some "idk where the fake ends and the real begins" because the "fake" stopped being a thing at around chapter 19.

Wow and despite literally EVERYTHING that Groover and Mateo had gone through, Mateo pulls the "omg, my whole relationship wad a sham" thing just because he overheard some of the hockey players talking about the contract... The contract that HE was also aware of from the start of the entire thing. Literally the dumbest, most incoherent, melodramatic thing. HOW exactly did hearing about other people talking about the three month contract lead to Mateo automatically assuming that Groover wasn't committed? And beyond that, you're telling me that after all the sentimental shows of affection between them, Mateo's very first instinct is to drop everything and assume that their relationship was entirely fake even despite them explicitly saying that it wasn't otherwise... Absolutely baffling.

I didn't even bother reading the last part because it was so nonsensical. Idk what the hell happened there, was this "climax" patched up from an older draft where Mateo somehow wasn't aware of the contract? Why was this not straightened out through editing? It's so very obviously out of place.

The book is 1.5 stars barely rounded up because there were parts I liked, but the romance needed so much work since it always consistently dropped the ball around Groover and Mateo's actions versus how the story acts like they were acting (they were completely genuine after a certain point, but the book still tries to act like the "fake dating" thing was somehow supposed to be a real source of conflict between them). Also read the previous paragraph for my thoughts on the climax.

This is book number 1 of the Melting Ice series and focuses on Groover (Ansle) and Mateo. Groover is an openly gay professional hockey player and is up for a very important sponsorship. The problem with that is that the company wants to see him be in a stable relationship so his PR and management team come up with a plan to hire a fake boyfriend for him to show the company that he is in a stable relationship. Mateo had always identified as straight but he discovered that he had an undeniable connection with Groover. I loved the development and progression of their relationship. It was a very natural and realistic development and they took their time exploring their feelings with each other. I also loved the friend circle they have surrounding each other! This was a fantastic story and an excellent start to the series! I can’t wait to read the next story in this series!

I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

🌟🌟🌟🌟✨ 4.5 Stars – A Heart-Melting Hockey Romance With All the Feels

The Puck Contract by M.M. Phoenix is the kind of book that makes you grin like a fool one moment and clutch your chest the next. It’s playful, emotional, and packed with more chemistry than a science fair on fire.

From the start, the main characters click—not just in the flirty, banter-filled way (though there’s plenty of that), but in a deeper, soul-level “I see you” kind of way. You can feel how much they care for each other, even when they’re pretending not to. It’s magnetic, messy, and completely swoon-worthy.

And then there’s the found family dynamic—chef’s kiss. The side characters aren’t just background noise; they’re a full-on support system, complete with chaotic group chats, teasing that comes from love, and those quiet moments where someone shows up just when it matters most. You can tell these people have each other’s backs, on and off the ice.

What really stood out to me, though, was how genuine the love felt. Every touch, every fight, every reconciliation—it’s layered with care and history. It’s not just about falling in love; it’s about choosing each other over and over, even when things get complicated.

Why not a full five stars? Honestly, I just didn’t want it to end—I would’ve happily read another hundred pages of these two loving each other and making jokes over takeout. But that’s hardly a complaint.

If you’re into sports romance with real heart, sizzling chemistry, and a team that feels more like family, The Puck Contract absolutely delivers. Lace up, dive in, and prepare to fall hard. 💙🥅

enjoyable even if the conflict makes no sense

This is a cute fake relationship story but the way the black moment happens and the non-hockey MMC reacts makes absolutely no sense. Like, there were ways to plot this that would have made sense, but this author took a sharp left into unnecessary miscommunication bc the main characters decided to ignore everything from before. The grand gesture literally has the hockey player apologizing to the non-hockey player about a contract THAT HE KNEW ABOUT AND WAS PAID FOR?! Like WHAT?!?! And the conflict initially starts bc two other characters are having some random conversation that makes a lot of assumptions but obviously was happening without the hockey player’s involvement. Like the whole thing doesn’t drag out thank goodness, but it also makes no sense. Luckily the MCs are charming enough that you can stick with it—especially since it happens very close to the end, so it’s not super drawn out. Otherwise I would have considered giving up on the read.

Ok I LOVE the fake-dating trope and Groover and Matteo were the BOMB MC's. Matteo a college student - soo geeky and into his anthropology. Groover - the famous out hockey star - but the man was sly and smart and love that he probably fell first. Would have been full 5+ stars, part of my "best of 2026" list - but the contract part of the storyline just had too many holes! At first I thought Groover didn't know about the contract, then it was like he was in on it. Then the whole second act break up over the contract that Matteo DEF knew about? UUGGHH Anyway if I didn't love these two so much it's probably even a 3 star book. But know going in - great MC's just a little holey on one of the plot devices. The rest of the team - lots more little details and still going to make a great series!

I really enjoy this author’s erotic novellas. I actually started this one thinking it would be the same delicious smutty goodness. I don’t know whether to be disappointed that there was more depth to the story instead of smut. I want it all!

I was digging the story until the manufactured drama at the end. I thought the characters understood how the relationship began and what it became after evolving. Then all of a sudden we have drama and uncertainty? It didn’t make sense. It ended well but it felt like the ending to a different story.

I’m not a hockey fan but I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Told in dual POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in the "Melting Ice" but it can be read as a standalone novel. This was my first read by this author, and I really enjoyed it. I loved how the relationship between Groover and Mateo developed as they explored their feelings for each other; it felt so realistic. These two were perfect with and for each other, and their chemistry was strong. The story was well-written, and I really enjoyed their banter; some parts even put a smile on my face. This is a fake-relationship story with low angst, and it was a fun, satisfying read. Overall, I had a good time reading it and hope you enjoy it as well!

2.5 rounded up. I really enjoyed it until the third act breakup. Very unnecessary and forced. If the author wanted conflict, they could have just focused on the impact of the fake relationship reveal. Heck, show us how the couple pulls the wool over people's eyes and gaslight everyone into thinking it's a real relationship that the reporter wrote a smear peice about. They could totally do it. If Mateo didn't have that freakout.

There are other logical inconsistencies, but I could ignore those.

This was cute and I felt like the relationship developed very organically. But I did not like the ending much. I think I have read too many book where one of the MCs just does something silly because they overheard a conversation and decided to act on the bit they heard instead of having a conversation. I wish third acts breakups were done differently or none at all. But it was a good read overall.

Great characters, good banter and spice.
