I really liked this book, it moved along speedily like a train moving along a track, no hanging about with this pair of Federal agents! Hannah has left the FBI and come home to spend some time with her father who has been diagnosed with parkinson's, not that she spent that much time with him as she hadn't even settled into her little flat when a call came for her to attend a murder scene with her new partner Derek, also a Fed but working in an urban town police office.

When they arrive they find an out of work musician dead in the parking lot of a nearby "seen better days" entertainment venue with a guitar string around his neck. He had a little daughter who would now be parentless. Hannah and Derek hit the ground running and just as they were working with that murder another one came along the tracks, a woman singer had been pulled out of a 3rd story window by a man holding onto the drainpipe with one hand. Now, he must have been superman!

They are short of suspects and are frantically pulling out all the stops with any scrap of evidence they find along the way. The thing which united these two was that they had both been musicians who had left big bands and decided to go it alone but the first guy was failing miserably at it but the second, the woman, was faring better in that she was close to getting a recording contract. Then a third victim was found, a musician who was still a working musician with some other guys and as usual he was the one who locked up the building, but the killer got to him and decapitated him with a cymbal. Blimey. Then a fourth victim to be came into view with all their researching and they had to get to him before the killer did. This was an exciting moment and the ending was quite brutal and very tense! I enjoyed it! Which worryingly must say a lot about me then!

Good book, not sure a lot of others liked it but books are often different to others! In fact I enjoyed it so much that I've just bought the second in the series and am about to start it, well actually I might wait until morning as it's past my bedtime now, although I'm not at work tomorrow...

Come Close is the first in a series by an author recommended to me. After finishing the novel, I don’t think I’ll be taking recommendations from this person again. The story felt too familiar, like something I’d read many times before, and didn’t offer enough to make it worth revisiting.

The plot is bare bones, relying heavily on well-worn FBI character tropes. The characters, including the protagonist Hannah Mercy, were largely forgettable. Unfortunately, Book 1 will be the only Rylie Dark novel I read.

I was looking forward to meeting a new mystery author but this book didn't impress me much. The character development was minimal and the story line followed an old formula. Female new agent with her own history meets her partner, with his own history and the head of the FBI branch, a tough cookie. The killer was finally identified but no clues about others that were meaningful. Just didn't get me excited about learning their identity. This is it. I will not go on to Book 2 in this series.

Silly

For FBI agents, these are some inept individuals. And what kind of place does the author think Lincoln, Nebraska is? A subway? A huge bus station? A music scene so big that a teenager would be listening to a local artist, but said artist also judges dive bar "battle of the bands" shows? Nah, none of it makes sense, and some of it not even from page to page. The continuity is bad, and the dialogue even worse. This is a series and an author that I won't be returning to.

Excellent story about an FBI agent whose mother was murdered years prior with no conviction of the perps. This turned her from music to law enforcement who was initiated with brutal killings of musicians or potential musicions. The perp din't like the fact that these individuals weren't true to their craft or calling. A very good read keeping the reader on the edge of their seat so to speak. I will read more of Rylie Dark's prose. Definite winner!!

3.5 I have mixed feelings about this book. It has two likable main characters. Hannah is a mini superwoman. Get punched in the stomach? No problem. Shake it off and keep going. Her partner has 10 years of experience in Lincoln, but she takes the lead. Small quibble, but not realistic. It is fast paced and a bit strange.

This felt like a fill-in the blank murder mystery. It was a boring read. I understand generating new content must be incredibly difficult, but this felt like plugging in basic info into AI and having it generate a typical cookie cutter murder mystery story.

Not recommended. Better books both from this author and plenty of others in this genre from others.

Repetious murder scenes

Like ground hog day. Murder scenes were the same actions only different victims. No suspense what so ever. Only saving grace was quick read after noting repeats.

2.5 ⭐️ completely average. A little bit of suspense, not enough suspects to keep you wondering/guessing. Nothing shocking about the killer being revealed and the ending just felt rushed. But for just a standard FBI hunting a serial killer easy read, it was fine.

Good mystery

I listen to a lot of books while doing chores around the house. Sometimes, because of this, I can get confused about this storyline. I did like this book. Never guessed who was the murderer. Think the epilogue was clever in making me want to read the next book.

Ehhh....so so book slow at times

Book was painfully slow at times and excellent at others, gave it a 3 but more like a 2.5. Probably won't read any more of this series because of that.

Not bad,Not good

I can't say it was a bad book it kept my interest, the characters were well developed and the story moved along. The problem was that the plot wasn't developed enough, it was shallow.. I guess I expected more.

Good book

A bit too much description IMHO, but compelling story. Hannah moves back to her home town to help her father, and solves a serial killer's spree.

Although the mystery develops gradually, the identification of the killer is a 'Hey! Presto'. Nobody knows who they are until, suddenly, the Feds know.

Good story. Lots of good texture in the book. Didn’t see the killer coming on who it was until close to the end. Good page turner.

Gruesome murders, but Hannah Mercy is a pro at her job. A new partner, a new city and a troubled past, this female hero is up to the task. Worth a look at #2!

Just a spree of murders and no real plot! Never been so happy for a book to be over. The ending was also abysmal.
