Burnout: The Complete Series

Rate this book
The complete box set of the Burnout series.

Meet the men of Burnout. Five ex-Army Rangers who've settled in Rapid City, South Dakota. Five men who've decided that friends are the family you choose.

Shooter (Burnout 1)

Chris “Shooter” Sullivan has returned to his home town of Rapid City, South Dakota to pick up the pieces of his life shattered by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He only wants to focus on holding what’s left of his old unit together, running his garage where he builds custom bikes and cars, and pretending that his murdered father’s motorcycle gang doesn’t exist.

Tex (Burnout 2)

Mark Marsten traded the Texas range for the Army Rangers years ago and never looked back. Now, he’s settled permanently in Rapid City with the remaining members of his Special Forces unit. He thought he had it all, well almost anyway. Until a sassy redhead with a sharp tongue and body to die for rolled into town.

Slick (Burnout 2.5)

Sarah Sullivan survived the unimaginable. Now she’s found love and friendship, everything a woman could possibly want. Or should want. But Sarah wants more. Even if it means she might lose everything she’s gained in the process.

Hawk (Burnout 3)

Hawk Red Cloud lives by his own set of rules: Don't let them share the saddle, don't bring them home, and never spend the night. So far, he's managed to avoid commitment like the plague.

Easy (Burnout 4)

Jimmy “Easy” Turnbull lost more than just his lower right leg during his time in Iraq. The confident man whose good looks charmed countless women into bed has been gone for over three years. In his place is a surly and defensive wounded warrior plagued by self-doubt and anger.

Vegas (Burnout 4.5)

When Abby Raines moved to Rapid City, South Dakota she was gambling for a chance to live out her dreams. She hit the jackpot and now has the swankiest hotel and the hottest boyfriend in the state, but she's still not completely satisfied. She's doubling down on a future with the only man who makes her weak in the knees (when she's not kneeling on them), the only man she'd ever call 'Sir.'

Doc (Burnout 5)

Caleb Barnes is on a mission. He's retired from the Army, but he's waging his own private war now. And though the men of Burnout are his former brothers-in-arms, Caleb fights his battles alone.

I read and liked the first two books of Dahlia West’s “Stark Ink” series so I decided to pick up this bundle since these characters make cameos in that series.

I’ll just give some quick thoughts on each book in the bundle. But first – the bundle is an excellent deal. I got it for $9.99, but it bumped up to $12.99 in about a day. But this is for 5 novels and 2 “slice of life” things. So, not a bad deal even at the $12.99 price.

The basic premise of the series: Five former US Army Rangers live and work in Rapid City, SD. They were part of the same unit in the war and they’re all that’s left of that unit having run over an IED which killed all the other members. Because of that, they’re brothers. They refer to each other as brothers, they call their group “family” and mean it. It’s never in doubt.

Four of the group work in Shooter’s auto/motorcycle repair shop and one has become a cop. They’re all in varying stages of recovery from PTSD to other lifelong hardship and they always, always have each others’ backs. You see that illustrated in the first book.

SHOOTER

3 stars. This book starts out great. I was loving it. And then the contrivances started. I mean one after the other. Mostly plot contrivances to force the leads to argue. Those are my least favorite, so it was annoying.

By the end I was still rooting for this couple and still interested in continuing so that’s something. Definitely worth 3 stars and maybe a little more. Shooter and Slick (nickname) are both mostly likable characters and I did love how they fell in love with each other. It was just that some things were not believable as far as plot progression went so that took some enjoyment away.

Warning: there is a scene that could be considered “cheating” although it technically isn’t.

TEX

1 star. Okay … I’m non-judgmental about sexual lifestyles. I read BDSM. When I do, I expect to get a certain thing. I knew going into this book that Tex was a dom so I knew to expect a few things. Abby, of course, is going to be a sub so that was expected as well.

But …

 photo a1ec617f-4f42-4b61-a367-60c8680db96a_zps4ldrirya.png

First of all, the story begins like the first book. A romance with erotic elements. We get a little bit of that – including not all that much information to form real opinions or thoughts about our protagonists and there’s a hint at some intrigue in one area – and then it suddenly becomes a very long letter to Penthouse Forum magazine (some may be too young to know what this is – I have no idea if it still exists – but it was hilarious fun to sit with a shadily obtained copy with friends at a sleepover and read the bizarre accounts of “regular” people’s sexual exploits.)

Again, I don’t judge the lifestyle, but this was straight up porn with some stuff that I did NOT want to read about. I’m not even squeamish. AND believe it or not, I’ve read about some of the stuff before (see confession of shadily obtained copies of Penthouse Forum magazine and sleepovers) so it’s not that I didn’t know the acts existed, it’s just that they did NOT belong in this series. What acts you ask? Well … Also, Tex becomes some other guy completely during all of this. There’s barely a resemblance.

Okay, after the porn – which takes up about 70% of the story and I mean straight through, scene after scene. We literally take a break from the rest of the story so we can go down this rabbit hole … -- suddenly the story starts again. With a bunch of elements that we didn’t really know at all from the earlier portion.

It’s a very bizarrely structured story and that works against it ultimately. There’s a story here, it’s just that the huge middle chunk that delves into the “training” doesn’t actually help forward it. It doesn't help that there's an element of the incredibly overused "reluctant sub" trope which I am so over and done with you can't imagine.

But let me reiterate for the millionth time: I do NOT judge the lifestyle (one of the reasons I have no patience for the 'reluctant sub' trope). I also do NOT judge the genre into which the acts described would fit. I do think it’s a book that can be skipped for the most part – maybe read the beginning and when they hit the big training part, if you don’t want to read it, skip to the end. You’ll have all the info you need to know what’s going on in the rest of the stories. But ... really, it can probably be skipped altogether if you're particularly squeamish. Each book sketches out back story pretty well, so I don't think anyone would feel totally lost.

SLICK

3 stars. It’s just a quick, little slice of life that let’s us know things that will be dealt with later on.

HAWK

3.5 stars. Things are getting better. Hawk is a great character who’s – as expected – a mess. He’s a womanizer, but he’s the honest kind. There are no expectations of him. Tildy, his love interest, is also a mess. As expected. She’s living a completely confined life dictated by her parents. She was raised without love, only control, and she’s pretty damaged by that. Very naïve, which works well as a foil for Hawk. I felt a lot of empathy/sympathy for her situation and the things she goes through on the way to the end.

Warning: another instance that can be seen as cheating (although not “technically” so) but they both do it so it’s kind of a wash.

EASY

2.5 stars. This is tough because I really liked the female lead, Daisy. The problem is that Easy is such an asshole it’s impossible to root for this romance. Especially because this is where we meet Adam Stark (from Stark Ink) and he’s so much more suited to Daisy. But Easy’s the lead and he gets her. He is such a dick so many times I had a hard time supporting the outcome. Even though he comes around (as one must in a romance), I worry that he’ll backslide and be a dick to her again. See, he was a dick in the first book too and started to come around. Who's to say he won't go back there again? Daisy deserves better, IMO.

I get that he has PTSD and he lost his leg and is having a hard time adjusting to it, but I just got really frustrated with all Daisy put herself through to try to win him. I only started to like it toward the end when she took a stand, but that comes late and she’s kind of debased herself by that point.

She’s a likable enough character overall, though, and I want her happy so if Dahlia West says she’s happy, I guess I’ll have to accept it.

VEGAS

3 stars. Vegas is Abby’s nickname. Abby is Tex’s woman and sub. This story is really just about an erotic tryst with a tiny bit of relationship stuff thrown in. It’s not bad but there is some girl on girl action with Abby involved that might make some heads spin.

DOC

4 stars. This is the best of the bunch. Doc AKA Caleb Barnes has been the steadfast friend throughout the series. He’s the only one that doesn’t work in the garage, preferring instead to become a cop. He was a medic in the service so he’s been consulted on several occasions where some medical advice is needed/necessary. He also never hooks up with any of the ladies at the bar on the weekends and he takes a monthly trip to Souix Falls for some reason nobody else knows.

Enter Izzy Boucher from Denver, Colorado. She’s a bounty hunter coming from a long line of bounty hunters. Generations in the business. She’s the last one and she’s after a particularly despicable criminal. She rocked; my favorite of all the female leads in the series.

I ended up liking this one more than I expected to and while an author’s note said West has story ideas to fill the next 2.5 years, I think a series focusing on these two characters and their life together would be very good.
- - -
This series has a lot of frustrating moments, but it’s not bad. In fact, I read through all the stories back-to-back (but then bundles do that to me). I think Dahlia West is a good writer and I like to support indies as much as I can. I think her writing in Stark Ink is more mature and competent, but you can see the seeds of that success in these earlier books. And it doesn’t hurt to see where these cameo characters came from.

PS: one thing I liked -- many of the female lead characters were very comfortable with their sexuality. Daisy and Izzy especially. It was a refreshing change of pace.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book one of Burnout series by Dahila West narrated by Mason Lloyd.
Chris 'Shooter Sullivan is ex army captain that after retiring opens his own custom bike and car shop in rapid city.
He also own the house next to him that he's trying to rent but is very picky and doesn't want any party's pets.
Hailey is on run and very scared that her attacker will come after her.
While walking home to her dodgy motel Chris picks her up and takes her home then once there he realises he has to offer his spare house.
Once living close by they become very close and Hailey slowly tells Chris and his teammates what happened to her before coming to Rapid city.
The relationship between Hailey and ex army teammates is lovely and so funny. At times this book is hilarious especially Chris. Mason Lloyd narrates all character beautifully and really hope other books are narrated by him as well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book two Tex/Mark and Abby's book of the Burntout series by Dahlia West.
I was really looking forward to this book I do like BDSM book but really struggled with Tex he says in start he's a sexual Dom meaning he's only wants to Dominate his sub when there in a sexual situations but that's not what really happen.
Tex ends up showing Abby the more heavier side to BDSM with master and slave role which I have to be honest didn't do anything for me and I did skip a lot of pages between 10-70% of this book just because it was Tex and Abby being Master and Slave situations. Only reason this book got three generous stars was when finally story got moving on after 70% it got a lot more interesting with Abby and hotel but also the relationship between Tex and Abby became a little bit more vanilla and easy to read and some of the sex scene became hot to read instead of awkward and making want to skip pages.
Really gutted that this book didn't wow me liked I hoped because I absolutely loved Shooter but I will persist with other books in series. I did love the ending and Abby's HEA though which saved this book for me.
⭐️⭐️
Book 2.5 after Sarah and Chris's HEA.
Really enjoyed this story of the after the HEA for Sarah and Chris my only complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger which I absolutely hate but hopefully find out what happened in Hawks story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book three Hawk of the Burnout series by Dahlia West.
I really liked Hawk from previous book and was really looking forward to reading his HEA.
From previous books you are made aware that he doesn't do relationships and only commits to one night stand.
Hawk meets Tildy in a parking lot where her car brakes down. Instantly feels things for Tildy but denies he has real feeling for her because he feels he's like his loser father that left his mother alone to raise two kids on her own.
Hawk does stupid stuff when it comes to Tildy and does spend I think to much time denying himself of his feelings. He at times uses Tildy and both don't sort their feelings out very quickly which makes this book drag at times.
My biggest complaint in this book and series is Chris and Sarah baby story in previous book we were left in a cliffhanger situation but that story isn't continue but started again in Hawks book but at least we get some sort of conclusion even though we're left sort of cliffhanger again with Chris and Sarah relationship after the trauma.
Really hoping Jimmy's book is better and he's doesn't come across as huge dick.
This did have a great HEA and ending which rescued it for me.
Book 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book four of the Burnout series by Dahlia West.
Jimmy 'Easy' Turnbull is a member of Shooters old army team.
Easy was injured badly in the last attack which he lost part of his leg and was severely emotionally affected.
Easy was struggling to deal with his emotions and was treating his family like shit in the mean time.
Daisy rocks up in town wanting to escape her past and her own demons.
Easy was dating a woman called Brenda until she made fun of him having one leg. After having a fight he comes across Daisy in toilets and has a extremely fast quickie where Daisy didn't even get off then he walked out.
There first impression was terrible to say the least.
I have to say I really didn't like Easy or how he was name Easy in first place, he really was a asshole and even though I know it was PTSD and with his family and Daisy support he really progress and becomes a guy you want to know.
Really like that the series is getting back to how it started really enjoyed how this book develop and included all previous characters. My only confusion is Sarah and baby situation with previous book Sarah was in a serious situation with whether to try get her baby to term or terminate the pregnancy then we jump to Easy book and Sarah has had the baby and everything's fine.
Absolutely love Easy grovelling and HEA.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 4.5 of Burntout by Dahlia West
Abby 'Vegas' is living her HEA with mark. This book just continues from the last and just follows mark and Abby's submissive training. This book is better then their main book Tex because there's not a lot of Mark and Abby training and more Mark getting Abby relaxed about possible public display of affection.
Abby expresses herself a lot more in this book and experiment with ff and ffm in a BDSM club.
Only 49 pages so really quick book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 5 Doc of the Burnout series by Dahlia West
I really struggled with the start of this book. It felt incredibly slow and didn't really pick up until Izy met Caleb.
After that it's fast pace and really funny in places.
In the end loved this book but took me over a month to read. Really dislike that first book in series was audible then rest wasn't.
Eventually a great ending and HEA.

I love this series and have lost track of how many times I’ve read it, though I’ve sometimes skipped “Tex” and “Vegas” because I don’t care much for BDSM but I do like the series.

I loved this series, all the books were great and the character memorable. The only problem with it is that I want more! I think that Dahlia West just became one of my favorite writers :D

Shooter

I really, really liked this book. Is the story of a traumatize girl, that's running away, and an ex-ranger trying to find his place after a bomb blew half of his team. The writing is at some moments a little bit off, the flow is not smooth, some moments drag for a long time, others fly by, but it's easy to read and it's almost impossible to put down once you start reading. There were a couple of things that bothered me, but overall it was worth the reading.

Tex

I really liked this character in the first book of the series, but not in this one. We have two characters, Tex, the ex-ranger that works for Shooter an that has a kinky side, and Abby, the girl from Vegas that arrived to the city to work as Assistant manager for a local hotel. I like how strong, smart, and sassy Abby is, and I like her interactions with Tex and the others. The book would have been perfect if not for the training weekend, that messed up everything. I don't have anything about BDSM, but I don't like how it was discussed in this book.

Hawk

Tildy is the typical poor rich girl, living a lie for appearance sake, following the script written by her parents, study, get a career and find the right husband. She is so isolated and so used to it that she doesn't even try to get out of that life, until she meets Hawk and feels like he can be the answer to her problems, but he doesn't want commitment, he has rules, and all his rules are telling him to get away from her. Is one of that stories where the couple doesn't make sense, but they work together just fine.

I love how the author makes the story feel real and how you can connect with the characters as if they were real.

Easy

Another good book, the characters feels real, you can understand their pain, and even if you don't like the choices they're making, you get why they are like that, they're damaged, hurt, and lashing out. I hated the way Easy was treating Daisy, but I understood his pain. I hated that Daisy let herself be treated like that, but I understand her need to feel wanted, her hope that she could break through and get what she wanted. It was a painful road and it more than once I wanted to scream at the characters for their bad choices, but at the end it did make for a good reading.

Doc

Finally, we get to the last book in the series. Doc has issues, more than I could have guessed from the other books, and same as with the others, these issues are what makes him real. Isabelle is a bounty hunter, she needs money and ends up in Rapid city looking for a murdered, and her path crosses with Caleb. What I liked more about this one, is that the roles are somehow reversed, Caleb is the one with bedroom problems, and she is the one who helps him overcome them., the one who pushes, the one who seeks, the one who refuses to get out of his bed and his life. They are the same in many aspects, and they work together really well. I think they are a perfect match.

This is a wonderful series about a group of men, that served together in armed combat, that stuck together when they came home, and the women that complete them. Each story takes you through an emotional journey, full of joy, tears, and heat, while the couple travel their path to each other. This is a series that I find myself reading over and over. Not to be missed.

Great series, easy reading

Lots of laughs, lots of lovin, little bits of drama, and a little bit of steam. The only bit I didn't really enjoy was the 'pet' and 'owner' play time, but that's personal preference, nothing to do with the story.

Burnout: The Complete Series (Burnout #1-5)
4.5 stars
by Dahlia West -- This box set is a steal! Shooter (Burnout #1) is free if you want to try it out before picking up the entire set.

These are the men of Burnout. Get ready to meet five retired Army Rangers who followed their Lieutenant to Rapid City, SD. The plan was never discussed; the men just kind of fell in line after Shooter announced where he was going and his intentions of opening up a garage named “Burnout.” They survived the IED on their mission. The entire unit didn’t make it. The ones left behind are the ones in the most turmoil. They are brothers; a chosen family of five until they all meet the women that will save them. Not only do you meet some exceptional male characters in this series but you also get to meet Maria (the owner of the bar that the boys frequent and protect) and Milo who makes the bar his home away from home. The banter between these men is honest when needed but hilarious for the most part.

Sarah Sullivan has to be a con artist. Shooter doesn’t like her and plans to find out exactly she is hiding.

This was my least favorite as it is a BDSM story. I don’t dislike the genre but I prefer action and adventure of different types. LOL!

Slick (Burnout 2.5)

Sarah Sullivan survived the unimaginable. Now she’s found love and friendship, everything a woman could possibly want; or should want. But Sarah wants more. Even if it means she might lose everything she’s gained in the process. This is a short novella and you find out the events from the cliffhanger in Easy’s book.

Hawk (Burnout 3)

Hawk Red Cloud lives by his own set of rules: Don't let them share the saddle, don't bring them home, and never spend the night. So far, he's managed to avoid commitment like the plague until Tildy. Can he watch her walk away into someone else’s arms knowing the devastation it will cause for her.

Daisy has him on edge. Her sass and her don’t give a rip attitude isn’t something he ever wanted. He is nothing anyone would want either. So whats the point.

He messed up and Izzy has made it clear there is no return.

I love this series. Any series that has characters that have a bond such as this and we get to hear each individual story is what I love to dive in to. These books are very well written and kept me turning the pages. Loved the fact that I stumbled on to these and they were all in a boxed set. Great read!

Totally got hooked on this series after Shooter. All the books were good but Tex and Shooter were definitely my favorites (along with Slick and Vegas's novellas). The only slower one was Hawk's and I can't even define exactly why I couldn't get into that one as much. I did like Tildy more during Easy's story than in her and Hawk's story. Caleb was such a stranger throughout the first four books but so glad he found his happy ending as well! Such great characters and I'm glad the supporting people (Milo, Maria, Rawlins, the horrible Rainbow owner) made it through the whole series as well.

The Complete Series.

I really did enjoy this series of books. Their stories and how they interact with each other EXCEPT for Tex/Mark and Vegas/Abby. I found what he did to her reprehensible. Treating her like a dog and raping her. There was no sex/love in his behavior. It is one thing to have an alternative lifestyle and another to abuse and humiliate a person. The author's note of how people wrote and said they loved Text and Vegas characters.....they lied.

Other than that I did enjoy the book.

I loved loved this story. This series is about five Ex Army Rangers settling down in South Dakota and finding the woman that complete them. Each story has suspense, laughter and holy Hotness between the sheets. I loved all five couples but Tex and Abby and Izzy and Doc aka Caleb our my favourites. Dahila West did a great job with Burnout and I can't wait to read more from her. If you looking for fun , exciting and some BDSM then you have to read Shooter, Tex, Slick, Hawk, Easy, Vegas and Doc. You will not be disappointed

Best Series

Burnout is one of the best series I've read. The plots were fascinating and well written. Each story was its own, steamy, sexy, interesting, fast-paced, page-turners. Loved the heroes -- good, solid men, always there for one another no matter what. The fierce love each woman developed for the men was not rushed but complete. I adore the possessiveness Sara has for all of them and the way they all helped her individually. I just wished they were longer!

I really liked this series! The first book had me hooked. Each book within the series focused on a different character. I was not a huge fan of the book about Tex, it was a little bit too hard for my taste. Every book had a great romance story to it and something dangerous was always going on. I would recommend this to others!

Great series!

Okay first things first, I would recommend this series to everyone. The story line was great from the first book to the last. In fact I read the whole series in three days. I could not put it down. The only thing I am a little disappointed with is I would have liked to know what happened to Preacher.

I loved this series! My family would be watching a series on Netflix that I loved, but I couldn't pull myself away from these characters. I hope she has more series out to become intoxicated by every night!

This series is one of my favorites and worth every penny!

The first book I read was Shooter and after that I was totally hooked and just had to buy the rest of the books! This series grabs your attention and for me didn't let me go until the very end!

Individual books have review of this band of brothers, Army Rangers turned bikers :). Loved these guys and their women but sometimes a little TMI for me (Tex).

Realistic

Amazingly real in emotions and life. Humanly touching with depth that takes you into the story. It took me back to the Black Hills.
