Not So Normative

You're Ours

Rate this book
After yet another boring work conference, Tyler isn’t expecting anything when he accepts a dinner invitation from his “work husband,” Jackson, and Jackson’s actual husband, Sky. Sure, he’s noticed how well Jackson’s shoulders fill out his dress shirts, and Sky is quite possibly the most gorgeous person he’s ever met, but they’re married, and Tyler is as single as it gets. He also has a rough track record with relationships, spending most of his life being accused of being a player, even though all he’s ever wanted is connection and good hook ups.

When both Sky and Jackson proposition him, he accepts eagerly, and falls into a whirlwind fling that turns into two incredible friendships—and they’re absolutely fire in bed!

Unfortunately, he doesn’t know what that means for him and his continued uncertainty about romantic relationships. When everything comes to a head, will Tyler work out what he wants—and needs—in a relationship?

You’re Ours is a LGBTQIA+ romance novella with queer, polyamorous, trans, and aromantic rep. It is a standalone novella in the larger Not So Normative universe.

D.C. Emerson

14 books110 followers
D.C. is an avid board gamer and rock climber who lives on the East Coast of the United States but loves to travel to places near and far as often as they can.

D.C. has always identified as queer, but during the pandemic they came out as nonbinary (they/them pronouns) to family and friends. This book was part of that process, and they have loved exploring different genderqueer identities like their own through their writing, reading, research, and countless hours watching reels and videos on social media.

Their biggest hope in writing queer fiction is to provide at least one other person out there with characters and story lines that they can recognize themselves, or their friends and loved ones in.

This novella has trans, aro, polyam, gay, and bi rep which is why I picked it up.

The blurb sounded great but I wasnt feeling any chemistry between the characters and when I got bored during their first sex scene, I knew this one wasn't for me. Bit of a bummer but oh well.

DC Emerson is incredible at writing about underrepresented identities in queer fiction. Whenever they have a new book, I know I'll learn something new that will blow my mind.

I've read some of Emerson's books before but this is the first time I don't share specific experiences and labels with the MCs, so bear that in mind.

First of all, this book is hella spicy! It might not be your average train read (though you do you - spicy books in a crowded train car is a power move.)
I've learned a lot about aromanticism and polyamory. I loved how this book explores both and shows how communication might be more difficult in some situations. I'm taking notes.

The characters are all lovely and I adore all three of them. They all fit together in different ways and the book does an excellent job at exploring all of them. I loved the pacing, which was a great fit for both the scope and the novella length. I'd also love to read more about these three guys but I don't want them to have another conflict, ever. (I'm feeling very protective of them, okay?😅)

DC Emerson is especially great at character (and identity) focused romance and they're quickly becoming an auto-read author for me.

I love Tyler, Jackson, & Sky 🥺 their dynamic was so unique and undeniable! I loved the discussion on aromanticism the most! I’ve never read a book with a character that was aromantic but not asexual and I hope to read a lot more in the future! With how much was going on in this story, I feel like it would’ve been much better if it was a full novel instead of a novella. A lot of the actual big moments and talks of their relationship happened off page & was just mentioned so it was a very tell not show way of telling the story. But I do think it covers some really important topics and I really did love the characters a lot!

Adored this little novella 🥰

It’s an MMM story, 6 chapters plus an epilogue, two chapters for each character but rotating through them, and told in third person.

In it, we meet Tyler, a cis allosexual man whose past relationships have tended to fail because his partners have wanted big declarations of love or marriage proposals when he wasn’t at that point, and didn’t know if he ever would me. Tyler really struggles to label and express his emotions, which sometimes causes communication issues, and I really felt for him. He just wants to be happy, and to make his partners happy, and it really hurt to hear him say he thought something was wrong with him 😭

Then there is Jackson, Tyler’s “work husband”. The two have a close relationship, and it quickly becomes clear that Jackson wants more with Tyler. As does Jackson’s husband, Sky, who works for the same company but in a different department. Sky is trans, and both he and Jackson are polyamorous and have had short and long term partners in the past. Once they bring Tyler into their relationship, the chemistry between all three is explosive, and I thought D.C. Emerson did an excellent job at portraying their dynamic, all three together or just two at a time. There are some time jumps, so although the novella is just over 100 pages, it does take place over the course of a few months, and we see snippets here and there of their relationship developing.

There was a point in the story where all three men were really upset, and that part really tugged at my heartstrings! But I loved what came from it, where Tyler started to research and explore being aromantic and the different types of connections he makes with people, and I loved how supportive Sky and Jackson were, once they were able to communicate with each other.

The epilogue is set a few years later and we get a little snippet of their life, and they seem to be happy together in the relationship they’ve grown as a triad, I just wish I could’ve had more time with them, to be honest!!

Highly recommend this novella to anyone who wants a shorter story exploring different kinds of gender identities, sexualities and attraction. I will definitely be reading more from this author! 🥰

What I liked

Good dynamic between all three men. I also enjoyed the FACT that they were adults (with the worries and stresses of actual!grown-up life). The intimate scenes (which were plentiful) were solid too. I was happily surprised abt the writing (which was good!).

What I didn't like

Out of the three men, I felt neutral abt Jackson. The entirety of his personality was "dude who is super in lurve with his husband and their boyfriend".

Also, because this book was less than 120 pages long, there was a marked change of pace in the last two chapters. Where, instead of showing, the author went into telling mode. It was a tad frustrating because, at that point in the story, a character realizes certain things abt himself. The book kinda sped thru that part of the novella.

Trigger/Content Warnings:

TL;DR: An enjoyable (if all too short) novella featuring three men developing a relationship. I appreciated a lot of things (diversity in queerness, gender identity, one of the MCs is half-Vietnamese), but was annoyed that the story ended up skipping thru some of the emotional beats.

That said, I liked it enough to pick up another book by this author. I read this in Kindle Unlimited.

I loved this! I read this when it was available as a short story, and I loved it then. I somehow love it even more? D.C. Emerson always knows how to write realistic queer experiences and doesn't shy away from sharing those real conversations that we all should be having. Tyler's aromantic journey felt so genuine, and the way he, Sky, and Jackson navigate that was so heartfelt. There's this idea that those who are aro don't and/or can't have meaningful relationships, but they absolutely can. They just look a little different from those of allo aligned people. I really enjoyed getting a little more time with these characters now that it's a full-on novella, and I loved this ending even more! I love D.C. Emerson, so much and everything they write. You're Ours is no exception, and it's so worth checking out!

“This voice seemed to crawl into his chest, right to that spot that always fluttered. It expanded, pressing on his lungs and making it hard to breathe.”

You’re Ours is a short story soon-to-be novella that was available through the author’s newsletter. That was an interesting story, as –like in the other author’s works– the MC starts to question part of his identity and brings his questions to us. It had a little too much –and too soon– spice for me to completely enjoy (I need to know more about characters), but that was completely the point here, as Aromantism is discussed (and it is a short story). But it didn’t prevent me at all from having a nice time with this book that left me with a soothing and peaceful feeling. I can’t wait to read a longer version of Tyler, Jackson and Sky’s story!

Jackson & Sky have been happily married for some time now, and both understand they are poly and would like to invite Tyler, Jackson's work husband, into the mix. through a series of random events that leads them to their place, Sky unknowingly starts things before Jackson makes their intent clear, oops. DC does a beautiful job in showing Sky and their comfort in being their true self, which made me somewhat annoyed. The aromance aspect felt almost rushed. it would have been nice to see Tyler's evolution more, which is hard in a novella, so I understand not all aspects of the story could be handled as thoroughly as I may have hoped them to have been. overall enjoyable read.

I love this little story with my whole heart. Any love story that makes aromantic representation shine is going to be near and dear to me. They serve as reminders of how many different types of ways there are to love deeply and care for others. This trio makes you on their side from the very beginning, each one winning you over in their own way. I loved Jackson and Sky's relationship and then I loved Tyler with them as well.

This was short and went by super quickly, the perfect light read if you want something happy and full of healthy relationships where each partner is loved and listened to. A really charming novella.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it for sure won’t be the last. This was so much deeper and more complex than I expected. The build up of their relationship was beautiful. The love, respect, and support literally brought tears to my eyes. Regardless of the type of relationship it is we all want to be understood and appreciated. I learned a lot from this.

Very much enjoyed reading this sweet novella with Sky, Tyler, & Jackson. It felt like a breath of fresh air. The way these three love and respect each other? 🥹❤️

And whenever Jackson called one of them “my love”? So sweet.

It also has Trans, aromantic, & poly rep. It’s a heartfelt, beautiful read - the first book I’ve read by this author but won’t be my last.

Wonderful

I adored this book. First of all, the cover is gorgeous! I also really enjoyed the story. I haven’t read many aro books, and while no two experiences are the same, I appreciated the insight. All three MC’s are lovely, and even though it features an established relationship with a third joining, no one ever felt left out or less important. I thought the conflict/confusion was handled well and was thrilled by their HEA.

The story was good, but I couldn't mess with the writing style.

Let me be clear: There is nothing wrong with this story! It's inclusive, touches on points people sometimes miss, its an honest and open gay-trans-polygamous story!!!
It was just the writing style.

This is a cute little MMM novella, but it felt a bit detached. Most of the book I felt like a spectator watching through the window instead of in the story. And that always bugs me.
What I liked a lot was that there was absolutely no drama concerning the fact that they all worked at the same company or any homophobia in the whole book.
And I guess there was some aro representation but I had a hard time understanding this part because it was so summarised. Before it got to that point I expected Jackson to come out as ace or aro, because of the build up of the story and I was quite surprised it turned out to concern Tyler. The trans representation was a lot better described. And I love that they were called Sky, and were able to keep that name.

Won’t reread, but I guess I recommend as a cute quick read.

4.25/5 ⭐

You’re Ours is a standalone novella by D.C. Emerson. Although it takes place in the author’s Not So Normative universe, it can be enjoyed on its own. Here’s what you can expect from Tyler, Jackson, and Sky:

💚 MMM contemporary romance novella
💚 Third person triple point of view
💚 Guaranteed happily ever after
💚 Polyamorous relationship
💚 Transmasc main character
💚 Aromantic representation
💚 Established couple
💚 Friends with benefits to more
💚 Workplace romance
💚 Coming out

As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. You’re Ours contains fictional depiction of real life 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences, including coming out and arophobia. Please take care of yourself while reading.

This was my first time reading anything by D.C. Emerson, but after thoroughly enjoying this novella, I’ll definitely be going back to check out their Not So Normative series. The illustrated cover is absolutely beautiful, and I think it does a great job at capturing all the characters as they were described in the book. What snagged me in the blurb and call-outs was the aromantic representation, as it’s something I don’t come across in a lot of my reading but I love seeing as I identify as arospec myself.

This novella was a fantastic blend of steamy and emotional. For such a short read, I think the author did well at giving us lots of backstory. Jackson and Sky are an established married couple, and they’re looking to dip their toes back into polyamory after their first relationship imploded and those that came after never worked out. They think their colleague Tyler would be perfect, but Tyler knows his track record with relationships is spotty at best. I think this novella captured a lot of the uncertainty and communication that comes along with polyamory, and there was definitely some angst as these three men navigated their changing dynamics. Their chemistry in the bedroom was effortless and electric, but defining their relationship proves to be a challenge. Tyler had some things to figure out about himself, and I found myself tearing up as he was able to define what he was feeling. It was such an emotional moment, and I absolutely loved how supportive Jackson and Sky were. I really loved all three characters. Their personalities all shone through in this novella, and their happily ever after was just so sweet and well-deserved. I loved this one!

((This was previously released as a short story but has since been revised and more content has been added.))

I was never able to read this when it was released originally, but when the blurb for this book was announced I knew I wanted to read it right away. I absolutely adore Emerson's writing style, I am so impressed by their way with words and how they write about various sexualities and identities with immense care and respect. You can tell as you're reading their stories that they take time to research what they are writing about and that level of detail and respectfulness goes a long way in making their characters relatable.

Now onto Jackson, Sky, and Tyler's beautiful polyamorous relationship! Firstly I want to talk about how much I loved how open and supportive all three of these men are with each other. When their friendship quickly dived into something more s===xual, they all made sure each person was comfortable and they asked what each others likes/dislikes were and truly listened to one another. I liked these three together, I absolutely adore the poly representation and how their dynamic was written and described.

My favorite moments were when these three were spending time together doing things, those things being; cooking together, going out on dates, cuddling on the couch, etc. That's the intimacy I look for in romance stories, and I just wish there were more of those moments in greater detail. I understand that spicy scenes are what kicked off these three developing feelings for each other and so in that regard there was bound to be more... However, I think this would've been as great (if not better) if there were less spicy scenes. But! Having said that, I did still enjoy the story despite that.

I appreciated how Tyler's awakening was written and described. Him trying to describe how he truly feels to Sky and Jackson brokemy heart. Especially because it was such a raw and poignant scene. The moment he said, "I don’t understand the difference between loving someone versus being in love with them." , that really hit home for me cause I can understand that. I can relate to it. This story made opened my eyes to something I wasn't fully aware of and gave me a lot of things to think about and research. I LOVE when an author and a story can open my eyes to topics, sexualities, etc, that I didn't previously know prior. It makes my bookworm heart and brain happy.

Overall, yet another great story by this author. I am so excited to see what they release next! ((P.S... The epilogue is fantastic!)

I can always count on Emerson to give me a story that may not be all that engaging as a story but definitely teaches me a ton, which is maybe not what I set out to want but is useful in its own way.

This workplace-based romance tackles poly relationships with trans rep, and does both with a great deal of respect and not a lot of OH HEY DID YOU SEE I WROTE A TRANS PERSON LOOK THEY'RE TRANS AREN'T I LOVELY that some authors do. (Look, I'm not gonna name names but it happens kind of a lot that the only character trait of a trans person in fiction is they're trans.) Tyler, who is "work husbands" (which is just fun because I absolutely understand the concept of a work spouse, which is different from a work bestie and also a beautiful kind of relationship) with Jackson, ends up meeting Jackson's legal husband Sky and they all fall for each other. Is the timing believable? Not really; the connection points are actually a bit fuzzy and I felt like the setup was a bit forced, but Emerson spends a lot of time after the "we got together" unpacking the "ohhhhh we're *together*" aspect of it, and I appreciate that. Melding lives together is a messy process, and the specter of past relationships plays a big role here because yeah, it does. Also, I cannot give Emerson enough props for handling an asexual character in a deeply allosexual world with grace and awareness. I was so glad to be along for Tyler's ride as he learned how he could be at ease with himself and others, how he could love and be loved in a way that honored everyone involved. He gets to be so much more than the supportive best friend that ace folks usually get slotted into being and that's amazing.

Not a lot of angst, not a ton of real plot beyond "relationship development," but again, a lot of learning. There are several places that it's clear the characters are mouthpieces for a thing Emerson wants you to learn, but I wanted to learn so that's cool with me. If you're looking for something hot 'n' heavy, this may not be your gig. If you're looking for something super adventurous, this probably also isn't your gig. But if you're looking for something that gently and respectfully unpacks poly realities and trans relationships, this is very sweet.

In this novella, we meet Tyler, Jackson, and Sky (my fav), who all work for the same company. Jackson and Tyler share a department, with Tyler reporting directly to him, while Sky works over in accounting. Jackson and Sky have been married for three years, and Tyler ever the explorer in love has been through relationships of all kinds, never quite finding the right fit. He jokes that Jackson is his “work husband” and Sky is his “work husband’s husband” but he never imagined a casual dinner at their home would change everything. That night becomes the beginning of something deeper: a journey of connection, vulnerability, and the kind of intimacy that catches you off guard.

What unfolds is a slow, meaningful exploration of trust, identity, and connection. Jackson and Sky open up about their polyamorous relationship, offering Tyler something he’s never had: a chance to belong. Tyler’s journey of learning how to express love, how to receive it, and how to stop seeing himself as the problem was as raw as it was beautiful.

This triad isn’t without its challenges. They each carry wounds, and the fear of messing up something good lingers in every quiet moment. But the tenderness they share makes you root for them. Sky, who is trans and identifies as male, is an absolute standout character. His kindness and patience make him the heart of the story. Jackson is grounded and quietly protective. And Tyler, he stole my heart with his vulnerability. He’s messy, he’s hurting, and he’s so achingly human.

D.C. Emerson, you had me sobbing. This book isn’t just a romance it’s a story about healing, growing, acceptance, patience and redefining what love can look like. This was my first book with trans representation, and I’m so grateful it was this yours.

You’re Ours – D.C. Emerson

One of the things I enjoy most about novellas is how they can pack so much heart and heat into a short space, and You’re Ours does exactly that. This story blends spice, emotion, and meaningful representation in a way that felt both refreshing and satisfying.

Tyler completely stole my heart. Watching him struggle with understanding himself, while also trying to navigate his place between Sky and Jackson, was deeply moving. There’s a particular moment where everyone is upset for different reasons about the same situation, and it really highlights the layers of emotion within their dynamic. It made me ache for all of them. Once Tyler started doing his own research and the group finally opened up to clear communication, the shift was so rewarding—I loved how understanding and supportive they became.

The romance felt believable despite the shorter length, largely because of the strong foundation between Sky and Jackson as an established married couple. Tyler’s integration into their relationship felt natural, even with the “friends with benefits to more” progression, and it gave the story a nice balance of tension and tenderness. The pacing was quick, but surprisingly complete—by the end, I felt like I had experienced a full, layered journey rather than just a snapshot.

What really stood out was how the story wove in representation—polyamory, a transmasc main character, and aromantic identity—all handled with care while still delivering on the romance and spice.

If you’re looking for a quick fix of love, spice, and representation that feels meaningful without being heavy, this is a great choice.

⭐ 4.5/5 – Beautiful representation, heartfelt dynamics, and just the right amount of heat.

I received this book for free from Gay Romance Reviews in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

You’re Ours by D.C. Emerson is an absolute gem—heartfelt, sexy, and beautifully affirming from start to finish. Tyler’s journey from feeling isolated and misunderstood to finding something that finally feels right is everything you could want in a romance. Emerson captures his emotional struggles with so much nuance—his fears, his longing for connection, and his uncertainty about relationships all feel incredibly real and deeply relatable.

The chemistry between Tyler, Sky, and Jackson is off-the-charts, but what truly makes this novella stand out is the authenticity of the characters and their growth. Watching Tyler figure out what he needs—and realizing it’s okay to want something different than what the world expects—is just perfect. It’s a story that honors the complexity of identity, intimacy, and belonging without ever losing its heart.

The representation is phenomenal too—queer, polyamorous, trans, and aromantic identities are portrayed with warmth, care, and authenticity. Emerson’s characters aren’t reduced to labels; they’re fully alive, messy, beautiful people you’ll wish you could know in real life.

If you’re looking for a romance that celebrates finding your own version of happiness while delivering serious steam, heart, and unforgettable characters, You’re Ours is a must-read. Don’t walk—run—to add this one to your TBR. You’ll fall head over heels for Tyler, Sky, and Jackson!

I really enjoyed this novella! For being just over 100 pages, all three characters felt fully fleshed out, and their relationship development was portrayed so well. Jackson and Sky were husbands, and Tyler was their coworker and friend whom they invited to be a third in their relationship. It was very interesting to read about the conversations and considerations that need to be made in a polyamorous relationship such as theirs. The three of them communicated quite well.

They also all had great chemistry; there was no shortage of spice in this book! But they were also very caring and so supportive of one another. I loved the way they worked as a triad but also in pairs. Their mutual supportiveness comes into play particularly during Tyler's journey of figuring out he's aromantic and what that means for his relationship with Jackson and Sky. I thought the emotions from all three men were captured so well during this journey, and again, it was very interesting learning more about what it means to be aromantic.

This was an enjoyable and informative read, and I look forward to reading the author's other works!

This was a pretty good read. Quick but lighthearted for the most part a few angsty moments with past relationships but nothing too bad. It’s filled with lots queer rep and for it being such a short read the characters had good depth.

You’re Ours
A Not So Normative Novella
By D. C. Emerson

This is my first read from D. C. Emerson. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

This book is about polyamory, so if that isn’t something you’re interested in or comfortable with skip on by. I like to read new authors, so I gave it a try. I think it is quite well written. Tyler has a troubled romantic past, he always seems to be in the wrong somehow. He works with Jackson and they have a wonderful friendship. He enjoys spending time with Jackson and his husband Sky, but he finds himself becoming attracted to the two of them. I had really fallen in love with the story by this point. Each man had a relationship with the other, emotionally and physically. It became a story about feelings not just steamy physicality. This novella is an experience in learning that not everyone feels similar situations the same. I am really quite interested in reading the rest of the books in the Not So Normative series. I’m off to find D. C. Emerson’s backlist!

What starts as a flirty dinner between a “work husband” and an impossibly hot married couple quickly spirals into a delicious poly whirlwind in You’re Ours, D.C. Emerson’s heart-filled, heat-infused novella.

Tropes? Oh, we’ve got friends-with-benefits-to-more, workplace romance, established couple brings in a third, and a standout: aromantic rep done with grace and depth.

Tyler, tired of shallow flings and being mislabeled a player, never expected that one wild night with Jackson and Sky would unravel everything he thought he knew about love. The spicy scenes sizzle, but it’s the quieter, identity-affirming moments that make this one hit. Sky’s confident transmasc joy, Jackson’s gentle steadiness, and Tyler’s raw vulnerability blend into something beautiful.

This story manages to be fun, filthy, and full of heart—a love letter to queer connection outside the lines. Emerson writes like someone who knows queer community: messy, tender, and gloriously non-normative. I smiled, swooned, and maybe got a little misty-eyed.

What was really neat about this story is that the coming together of this trio seems organic. Tyler has not had a lot of good fortune with relationships - he just can't seem to sync up emotionally with his partners. But Tyler and Jackson, who Tyler sees as his work husband, are close and there is synchrony there. Sky, Jackson's actual husband, also likes Tyler so the pair invite Tyler into their relationship. They are polyamorous and it turns out that there is good chemistry in this triad. It takes them some time to get into emotional rhythm and the author did a nice job of portraying that and the work they need to do to get on the same page and then an epilogue to assure us that they are doing alright. Nicely done though not a long novel.

You’re Ours by D.C. Emerson is a short, steamy, and surprisingly tender exploration of queer love, identity, and chosen connection. What starts as a flirty dynamic between Jackson, his husband Sky, and his "work husband" Tyler quickly evolves into a poly romance full of heart.

Sky’s confident, joyful self-expression and Jackson’s steady support make a strong foundation, while Tyler brings a raw vulnerability that adds emotional depth. Though the aromantic rep felt a bit rushed (a natural limit of the novella format), the story still manages to touch on themes of identity, belonging, and emotional intimacy in meaningful ways.

It’s sexy, sweet, and affirming—filthy fun with a big queer heart. I only wish we got more time to see Tyler’s emotional journey unfold. Still, this is a beautiful love letter to nontraditional relationships and queer joy.
