With the dawn of her eighteenth birthday, Princess Adeline of the Ambrose family has become the most eligible young woman in the Kingdom of Scalebreak. As suitors from across the realm line up for her hand-in-marriage, Adeline daydreams about her dangerous midnight adventures. More than anything, she wants to protect her kingdom and learn to harness the brief moments of power she’s been collecting since she was fifteen. She’s never felt more alive than when her body hums with magic stolen from the deadliest creatures in the realm, and she’s willing to kill for it. What will win out – her desires for power, freedom, and to be hailed as a protector of the realm, or the sense of duty to her family and the expectations that come with being a princess?
Burdened by the heavy weight of her decisions and overwhelmed by suitors, Adeline turns to what she does best, slaying dragons. But when an average night of ruthless hunting goes wrong, she finds herself injured and kidnapped by the clan she thought to exist only in legend. After just a few hours with her kidnapper, Roman Drache, Adeline finds herself questioning everything she has ever known. Will the princess submit to the whims of family and country in the name of duty, or will Adeline choose to embrace the power within arm’s reach and learn to fight for the truth she has cowered from her whole life?
Everyone get this on your TBR, this is going to be a must have! From the get go I was entranced by this book, I couldn't put it down until my eyes were physically closing with sleep, I had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for this glorious book and will definitely be buying a trophy for my shelves 😍
The dragon storyline was intriguing and gave the world-building depth, the prologue alone was enough to know there would be heavyyy lore coming but it was delivered in a light way that didn't feel dragged on for too long or rushed too much.
The female main character is so sassy, I love that she was both headstrong and also gentle. Like yes, Adeline, you CAN be babygirl and also a bada$$ who brings men to their knees. More of THAT energy in books please, forever!!
The romance was CHEFS KISS. Roman was 10/10 broody man just doing broody man things but also being a lil cutie cinnamon roll. Also loved that he was literally Just The Man, it was 1000% Adeline's story still.
The side characters?!?!?! FALRIN my sweet Falrin, he's so hilarious and I need an entire book of him please and thank you. Seraphina!?! We love girlhood and their friendship was literally perfect. I loved all of the side characters so much, they all had personality without taking away from the main storyline which is always something I appreciate.
The ending chewed me up, spit me out, ran me over, set me on fire, and then threw a box of Kleenex at me and said "get over it, we have things to do" AND I AM NOT OKAY. I need book two immediately.
Thank you so much to the author for giving me an ARC and I apologize for not finishing the book before the release date! 🥹❤️
The plot was really fun, it was well written, I enjoyed the writing style, I enjoyed the worldbuilding and it was getting more and more interesting with every page! The beginning of the book was a little weaker because I was getting a little lost, but when I finally understood more of the world and characters, I was more than satisfied 🤭
The characters were well written, I liked Adeline because she was sassy, badass, but also had a huge heart and was sweet. Reading about her interactions with Calum made me roll my eyes and I’m glad she clocked him when it was needed. I was also a bit confused by the fact that she reacted so calmly when being kidnapped but I understood her once I realized how much better she was living there than at home 😍 Reading about her exploring a new place, seeing the dragons, bonding with one - I was so damn happy and enjoyed it so much! ❤️ Roman was a good character as well, he was sweet, yearning for her and I really liked their chemistry 🤭 The romance was chef’s kiss 😛
The last few pages were stressful and I was really nervous because I knew that it would probably not end too well… and I was right. I cried and I can’t wait for the next book because the cliffhanger absolutely killed me 😭
I definitely recommend this book if you love romantasy with dragons like me 🐉
This is a truly enthralling tale that explores the morality and intent behind dragons, dragon slayers, and dragon riders.
This unique spin on how powers are channeled through dragons and what you must do to gain the power is one I hadn’t seen in a fantasy read before, and the desire to know more about the magic system in this world had me compelled to keep turning pages, even as I fell in love with the characters and needed to jump headfirst into their antics and emotions.
The main character Adeline is absolutely a force to be reckoned with, as she realizes she can still be strong with or without access to magic ability.
Adeline grows up in a kingdom where dragon slayers are honored and the power bestowed upon them is coveted, and longing to save her people from the ravage and ruin of the ruthless dragon attacks, she sneaks out at night to take on the dragons, as her family would see that role as unbecoming of a princess.
She is plagued by an endless tirade of incompatible suitors separate for her hand and grows weary of the pomp and circumstance.
Then one night she is kidnapped by Roman, a delicious shadow wielder and dragon rider who lives in a village she has been taught her whole life is fiction.
Despite being a prisoner, she quickly becomes comfortable in her surroundings and fast feels at home within the village and surrounded by her new found family. But it isn’t all gorgeous dresses and baking cinnamon buns. She is faced with hard truths surrounding the history of dragon kind and comes face to face with some of the beautiful and ruthless creatures whose kin she has slain.
With romance and intrigue, found family and secrets of dragon kind, this fantasy is one you will thoroughly love being immersed in, and the ending will have your heart yearning for book two almost as much as you yearn for the touch of this delicious shadow daddy and his ability to recognize his woman’s worth and strength, standing on her own two feet.
This author definitely created a world you will be desperate to revisit once the book is closed!
I am so infinitely proud of all you have accomplished and I am so thankful and feeling so blessed to have been brought onto your girlhood team to be a part of this amazing project. The week of mayhem was absolutely the ride of a lifetime and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls or a better story to experience in the midst of absolute craziness.
This story is so powerful, the banter is incredible, and Roman has my heart from now until the end of time. Your ability to tell a story is reminiscent of Tangled, in which the imagery just makes you feel like you are right there beside Addie during her journeys. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us along this ride and can’t wait to be right there beside you!!!!!!
Read this if you love: 🤍dragons 💗shadow daddies 🤍found family 💗betrayals & secrets 🤍forced proximity 💗she’s a princess 🤍he kidnaps her
When I tell you I ate this up in a day I mean I ATE THIS UP like the boys with Addie’s cinnamon rolls!
The world building is so in depth without feeling like it’s dragging on and you can tell just from the prologue that the lore is going to be deep!
A feisty princess who moonlights as a dragon slayer?! YES MA’AM👏🏼👏🏼 Not the type of girl to sit back and let her parents marry her off to whoever, she takes matters into her own hands to help her kingdom during the dragon attacks.
Hunting one night doesn’t go to plan when she gets kidnapped by the mysterious man who watched her from the royal gardens. But if you’re gonna be kidnapped at least it’s by a tall, tan, tattooed shadow daddy who lives and breathes sarcasm but is brought to his knees even from their first encounter. 🥵
The friendships that are built and the trust that is earned will have your heart swelling with joy as she finds her place in Drakmoor.
Adeline Ambrose may be our strong, sassy, pink loving FMC but after the way that Roman handles her with the love and care we all want you’ll never see the color blue the same again.
I’m so thankful for Makayla for not only creating such a beautiful story that will having you dying for more but for letting me be an ARC reader with her debut book baby! You knocked it out for the park girl, just like I knew you would! 💕

I really enjoyed this book. It took a bit of time to get used to the change of pov between the fmc and mmc characters and remembering who's side of the story i was reading from. However, after a few chapters, you get the feel of whos view point im resding from. I'd definitely say its NOT enemies to lovers its more of an instant attraction on both side considering the kidnapping & the instant thought the mmc has for the fmc, when he brings her to stsu in his room on night one. I really enjoyed reading this from two different viewpoints. It was a delightful change to be reading that the 2 main characters were of similar age, with no mad age gap, basically in their late teens. Im not too sure if I missed the part on what the fmc father has been up to that has encouraged the kidnapping of the scalebreak princess but im still wondering but hopefully its brought up in book 2 or even a quick refresher of whats been going on. Im a sucker for series read, but I hate cliffhangers, especially when I can't just continue onto the next book straight away. But overall real good read, kinda gives an early start of dragon riders but then lost to history and making a come back to the world to make themselves known again. Also, if you're a big lover of spice, this book has a little bit of spice, very mild 🌶
I loved this book so much!!! I devoured it in just a few days. Would have been less if I didn’t have to adult. I love the characters, she did such a good job of building them up and letting us get to know them. I felt like I knew them personally and could feel all their feels. I really enjoyed Adeline’s journey and self discovery. ( There is a handsome shadow daddy too!) Makayla paints such a vivid picture that as I read I could see all of it play out in my mind. I can’t wait for the next book!!
I will not give spoilers but I will say this book is a must read, the FMC Addie is so many things but to simplify she is kind and caring with sass and a fierceness I just adore. The main MMC Roman at his introduction is definitely Intriguing and the touch her and die vibes are great. I will say there is one Character you will hate more and more as it goes on along with a twist and heartbreak at the end of the book. (So Do Not Read in Public like I did). I 100% recommend this author and I see great things in her future I truly can not wait to see where this author takes us.
This book I’m sure is just the first in the series. At least I hope so.
ARC review, I would put this on my TBR. It does start a little slow, but it picks up and you get grossed in the world the characters this is my first time reading this author and I’m gonna put her on my must read authors from now on.
“Blue makes me think of you, because you are my favorite shade of it.”
Mak Mak Mak. It hurts. That ending hurt. I will never get over that, but I will forgive you in exchange for a very good painful death for the people responsible. In other news this was a masterpiece and I loved it so much as you already know at how fast I ate it up but I never had any doubts that it wouldn’t be a masterpiece!! Roman and Adeline oh how they make my heart happy talk about fate and love at first sight. 😏 not only that but spicy. Also let this be a lesson to everyone always so the words! Don’t wait. 🤨 Falrin I love him. Seraphine, thistle, Milo. I love them. I know two other people who I wanna see together in the world to come. 🫣 the dragons least the ones we met are sassy creatures and I love them! I sense maybe a little dragon romance could form too. Just a theory. Calum nothing nice to say about him except I wanna pummel his face and throw him off a cliff. Screw him. Overall this book gave me all the feels love, laughter, heartbreak, dragons? I mean what more could a girl want. Everyone I insist you must go read this when it releases because it was once again I shall say a masterpiece and it breaks you in all the right ways. 🥰🥰
Blade of Broken Scales absolutely shattered me and then pieced me back together. From the first chapter, I was pulled into a world full of danger, courage, and raw emotion. The heroine’s journey is one of pain, growth, and finding strength in the most unexpected places. The writing is intense and beautifully vivid — every line feels intentional, every moment carries weight. I loved how Makayla Marie blends darkness and beauty into something so powerful. If you love fantasy that challenges your heart and leaves you breathless by the end, this one deserves a top spot on your shelf.
I loved this book, the start was a little hard to get into but the more I read and understood the importance of the beginning I couldn’t stop reading! The banter, the spice and chemistry between Addie and Ro was PERFECT 😩🥰❤️ The only reason this was a 4/5 was because of the ending 😩😩 I know it was set up for hopefully another book but ugh 😩 I wasn’t ready for it to end.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK. I wanted to just sit and devour it but adult responsibilities unfortunately kept taking me away. My only complaint is that now I have to wait to see what happens next. The world building, the characters, the plot. I loved it all. Except Xandria, get over it girl 😂.
It needs to be 4.75 stars, but that’s not an option 😂 Loved this book and I NEED book 2 asap!!! Such a great story of love, life lessons and courage to find who you are despite being terrified.
Arc reader here! I am so glad I was selected as an arc for this book. I love fantasy stories, dragons, romance, strong FMC!
This book took a little bit to get going but once it did I was HOOKED! Adeline is such a badass princess ripped from her castle and has her whole world turned upside down.
Things of fairytales turn out to be real life. Killing dragons turns into bonding dragons, wars, loss, love!
Toxic men like Calum, worthy men like Roman and Falrin 😍.
The only thing I dislike about reading arc’s is having to wait for the next book.

ARC Review🖤 3.75 ⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ I enjoyed this fast pace read. Even with dragons it was still a unique world that I wanted to immerse myself in. It is an insta love for our MMC(shadow daddy) and I was here for it. I definitely recommend and look forward to book 2!!
Well this book drew me in, tumbled me about and spat me out!
I was head over heels in love with this book and its storyline from the prologue and when introduced to the FMC Adeline I could not contain my glee, princess by day, dragon slayer by night. She is full of sass and promise and bite and sarcasm and I love it . The love story between her and the MMC is nothing new in Romantasy novels but the way this author described them falling had me kicking my legs in absolute joy. The pacing, the descriptions, the characters from main to side is all just fantastic and sent me to my happy place.
I was lucky to receive an ARC version of this book so have been able to enjoy it early but unlucky also because now I have to wait longer for book two and after that ending its going to be a long wait
I love this book so much that I would read it a million times and never get tired or bored with it!!! Shout out 2 the author who did a fantastic job with the entirety of the book!! 💙💙
I was very excited to get an Arc of this debut novel. It had a very interesting premise and I had really high hopes for a new and interesting take on dragons. I liked the way the prologue introduced Amira as a character and how torn she felt about hunting dragons. I was excited to find out where her story was going to go. Unfortunately, I did not feel like her character got fleshed out at all. She was very much a side character with not a lot of development or description on what her character had gone through or how she got to where she was in her life.
The FMC, Adeline, had a lot of potential in the beginning. She was described as a princess during the day with a secret night life of hunting dragons to protect her kingdom. Who wouldn’t love a character like that? However, she seemed very wishy washy. She talked about her best friend Calum and how they grew up together. He trained her and gave her a special dagger. When he kisses her, she kisses him back, but then suddenly freaks out and changes her mind. It didn’t really make sense to me. It also did not make sense to me that she was supposedly trained by Calum, and was capable of hunting and killing dragons, but then needed to be trained later in Drakmoor. She also was mad about being kidnapped, but NEVER tried to escape. It was very much an insta-love/lust story for me and not at all an enemies to lovers situation.
The MMC was described as a dark, broody, dragon riding shadow daddy. At first I was intrigued. But it was never explained why he could control shadows other than it must have come from his dragon. He said a lot of the right things, but other than that, his character lacked dimension. I did enjoy how protective he was of Adeline, but again, it didn’t make a lot of sense because they barely knew each other. A prophecy was thrown in at the end about him but it wasn’t explained well.
The world-building was severely lacking to me. The author spent a lot of time in the beginning describing every part of the castle and every piece of clothing that Adeline wears. However, later in the book when I would have liked information about how the dragon riders came to be or why their kingdom was only known as a myth, we got nothing. I’m sure she will flesh out more of the mythology in the next book but it was disappointing and left me feeling annoyed. The battle at the end was rushed and lacked depth. I could see what was coming and when it happened, I was irritated that a character that was such a badass would have ended up that way.
Overall, the story had some good lines, mostly from Roman. They were the best parts of this book! I would have liked more dialogue between the main characters that demonstrated how their relationship grew and developed. I love banter, but there also needs to be sharing of each other’s stories to completely connect with them and to make sense of their feelings for each other.
Baddie addie and daddy roman ARE my roman empire. im obsessed with them and this book. the fact that it ends on a cliffhanger makes me desperate book 2. I need it like yesterday. if you love dragons and shadow daddies, this is the book for you👏🏻
ARC READ- I honestly enjoyed the book, it was a little slow in the beginning, and picked up a little pace in the middle. However I feel the ending was a little rushed; that and the last words Amira spoke to her didn’t really hold anything over me in a sense. There was a connection between the two main characters but there was no strong chemistry or anything built in and the plot twist at the end was thrown in there and it was mentioned briefly in the middle of the book but nothing that stuck out.
Overall still a good read; super glad I got to read I and patiently waiting for the second book now!
There are just some stories you KNOW will live in your heart for the rest of your life. Blade of Broken Scales is that story.
From the stunning prologue, you're thrusted into this magical world of dragons, lore and bad ass female characters. The world building was easy to understand (as someone who sometimes struggles with world building) that you didn't need to think while reading, which lets face it, some of us read to stop the thinking. Makayla writes like she's breathing life into the words, her descriptions paint the prettiest pictures in my mind. Am I still absolutly DISTRAUGHT over the ending? Yah. Yah I freaking am. HMU if you wanna see a 5 minute video of me BAWLING reading the end.
Adeline's character and her growth was stunning, the way she was insecure but still held her ground and then watching her grow and become less stuttery and more sure of herself was a sight to be hold. The way she brought men to their LITERAL KNEES had me screaming and kicking my feet.
Roman, oh sweet shadow daddy Ro. What to say about this absolute CINNOMAN ROLL of a man? His dedication and love for Addie was adorable and beautiful. Was he an idiot for a few chapters? Yes. Did he learn from it an didn't it again? Also yes. It's called character growth and I AM SOOOO HERE FOR IT. And that spicy scene? GOOD LORD. That man can GET IT
I'm a sucker for sassy dragons and they did not dissapoint, I cannot wait for more of them in book 2. Same with more on Falrin and Seraphina. Fal? Gimme 14 of him and a side of sauce please.
Anyways, if BoBS isn't on your TBR or pre-ordered, I question you as a person. Jk I don't, but do it anways and trust me.
