Navigate bittersweet endings and unexpected beginnings with Bluey in this graphic novel chapter book based on the wildly successful animated series Bluey, as seen on Disney+.
The Heelers are moving?! Bluey tries to stop Mum and Dad from selling their house while the whole family is distracted helping Uncle Rad and Frisky get married. Can Bluey and Bingo change their parents' minds before it's too late? Read on in this graphic novel chapter book!
This is so very cute, I like the colored text boxes and the open background behind panels that makes it all seem more connected and less blocked off like a typical comic. I think this fits really well with the style of bluey and its overall calming nature. Bluey is upset that dad got a job in a new city and they have to sell the house and move, frisky and uncle rad are getting married in Bluey's backyard and all the younglings are flower girls. rad told them they would move out west after the wedding which upset frisky who said he cant tell her how to feel, called off the wedding, and drove off. mom then gathered the flower girls and hopped in a car to go get her. Bluey thinks if they remove the for sale sign the no one will buy the house which is why she and the other kids wanted to ride with mom to find Frisky. Frisky was going to remove the sign for the weekend while they had the wedding so that it wouldn't be an eyesore. But Bluey also thought because their teacher said things would work out it it would mean no one would buy the house, which is obviously not the case. The teacher had just told the story of the farmer, who had a horse that ran away, but brough back wild horses, then his son tried to ride one of the wild horses and broke leg so he didn't get drafted. It's about life happens. And it's very much how this whole volume goes. The whole crew of flower girls drive around and find that Frisky got pulled over, got juice, and then went to their favorite park. Bluey is having an amazing time because because she got to ride in the front seat and later finds a coin on the ground. Once they catch up to Frisky uncle Rad pops in to talk to her, saying he knows her, no one had to tell him she would be here. They decide to get on with the wedding and it is a beautiful night. Rad also decides that he will just find a new job and they will stay here so Frisky is happy and doesn't have to leave. Bluey is still sad they have to move for her dad's job, and mom admits she is sad too, but she's not going to worry about it anymore. They begin moving all of their furniture out and this is when Bingo learns what it means to sell the house, which she is absolutely distraught over. The story wraps up quickly as their house is sold to the shaggy sheep dogs who we saw tour the house in the beginning. They are up at the park where the binoculars that cost a coin are, and lo and behold, Bluey's coin was put in the wrong slot! So the dogs take it out and insert it in the machine to try and spy their new home, only to discover a new for sale sign being put up for a house WITH a pool, the only item Bluey's home didn't have and they sincerely wanted. The closing of the book sees dad getting a call as they load up the car and then walking over and ripping the sign out of the ground just for all the family to dog pile on him in happiness that they don't have to move. This is a really good story. All of the Bluey stories are amazing, but I really liked how everything was so connected and intentional. It shows you that good things can be a problem, like yes Bluey got to ride shotgun, but they were pulled over mid Frisky hunt. Yes Bluey found a coin on the ground, but it got stuck in the wrong slot so no one got to use it. It's a lot of give and take and aligns so well with the story of the farmer. There's a great message in this story about not worrying about the future and just taking each gift from life as it is and going with the flow.
So it's basically one big Bluey episode, in comic form... and how could you not love that? Great for the higher end of early readers, it's got a lot to read and see in the pictures, with whole sections that have no words and let the images do the talking. Just as in the TV series, the story is gentle, endearing, and shows the follies and triumphs of a family. In this episode, Bluey is struggling with her parents' decision to sell their house and move. Her teacher advises everything will work out, and we follow the roller coaster of ups and downs as one thing leads to another, good luck and bad, until finally everything is resolved.
It's a great lesson in acceptance, and in cause and affect; we can't always know the outcome, but we also can't always control it.
Illustrated in the same style as the show, and the speech bubbles are color-coded to the characters so it's easier to follow along.
It was sad, but at the same time, it was happy. It's the best Bluey book ever! It's really interesting if you read it to yourself and you read it out loud to others. And babies will probably like it.
I saw this book at the library and thought it might be a great read-aloud book for the grandson (3 yrs old). It is a graphic novel. While I enjoy reading them, I don't consider them great books to read to somebody. The story is about 'the sign' in the yard which is a 'for sale' sign.
