Worst Ideas Ever: 42 Truly Terrible Decisions

Rate this book
Bad ideas happen to anyone, but truly awful ideas live on forever.

Some bad ideas are infamous (remember New Coke or the XFL?), while others have managed to slip under the radar of public consciousness—like the in-car record player. But just because we’ve forgotten a bad idea doesn’t make it any less horrible. We all cringed when Michael Jordon announced he was leaving basketball for baseball, but did you know that Whoopi Goldberg made a never-released $35-million buddy cop movie where her partner was an animatronic dinosaur named Theodore Rex ?

Part history, part comedy, Worst Ideas Ever takes a look back and explores some of the biggest flops of all time. They say hindsight is 20/20, but it’s hard to believe nobody saw these coming. This book delves into the history of disaster, taking you through failed marketing campaigns, terrible pop icon projects, disastrous corporate decisions, and more, with the authors reviewing every funny detail of what went wrong. Worst Ideas Ever shows what separates the merely bad ideas from the terrible ones.

From New Coke to the Yugo, "Battlefield Earth" to Prohibition, modern history is full of laughably bizarre ideas that have made for some epic fails. In fact, somewhere in this world there is actually a little boy named "Facebook". Perhaps he can befriend some of those crazily-named celebrity babies (Moses Martin, anyone?). In this collection of anecdotal insanity, Daniel Kline covers laughable attempts in sports, politics, media, and so much more. Hey Paul Blart, remember the Segway? Have you ever deep-fried a turkey and blown up your house? How sexy is sticky, gooey pubic hair-infused edible underwear? Kline reminds us of failures past with wit, but the editing in this collection is worth a 'worst' nomination of its own.

We listened to 90% of this book on a drive home from Portland one day. It was pretty funny. The authors share a lot of humor throughout, and it was a fun walk down memory lane for us. At times, especially when talking about things like basketball it got a little long winded and preachy, a deviation from the bulk of the examples, but otherwise pretty funny.
The premise is bad marketing ideas mostly, exposed for the ridiculous ideas they are. New Coke, using a chihuahua as a marketing spokesdog for Taco Bell, the Yugo and many more. I wouldn't rush right out and buy it, but if you have a long trip ahead of you it's a good time passer.
