Sounds of the Bugs makes learning fun! With delightful sounds and five stunning pop-up panoramas featuring Maurice Pledger's award-winning art, this book lets kids get up close with the insect world. They'll hear the hum of bees, the ticking of beetles, and the snap of scorpions. They'll see the two-spotted tree cricket and the monarch butterfly, who make their homes in woods and fields, and the desert tarantula and the striped hawk moth, who make their homes in the desert. Bugs from mountains, water, and wetlands are all included. With colorful illustrations by Maurice Pledger, Sounds of the Bugs is a stunning introduction to this creepy, crawly, and ultimately fascinating world.
Maurice J. Pledger, was born in the Hertford district in 1955, son of Douglas Alfred W. Pledger (1920-2005) and his wife Leda T. née Ginghini, who married at Bologna, Italy in 1946. Maurice had no formal art training, but achieves the realism and detail in his beautiful artwork by spending hours in the field, observing, sketching, and studying his subjects in their natural environment and is an internationally acclaimed artist known for his realistic and detailed illustrations of animals and wildlife. Maurice Pledger first published at age 17, and has since had his illustrations featured on greeting cards, prints, gifts, and books. He has created several successful series, including 'Sounds of the Wild', 'Peek-and-Find', 'Nature Trails', and 'Pledger Sticker Books'. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 29 Fore Street, Ipswich in 1979, two paintings 'Teal' and 'Shellduck' and in 1992 was the recipient of the 1992 Francis Williams Illustration Award for the Best Descriptive Illustration, which honour is given only once every 5 years by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He married at Broxbourne, Hertfordshire in 1978, Pietra Provenzano and lives at Hoddeston, Hertfordshire.
When my daughter first opened this book, she spent several minutes looking for the bee that she thought had been trapped in the pages and was now buzzing around our living room. The sound effects are a wonderful feature, and Maurice Pledger's illustrations are superb. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Pledger has never taken formal lessons and, if this is true, he is incredibly clever for learning how to capture such likeness in his nature art. The pop-outs help to bring them even more to life. I had to pay 30 bucks for this book, but I do not regret it. I know my daughter will get enjoyment out of this one for years. If she ever tires of simply looking at the pictures and hearing the sounds, each page also has detailed information on the back about each of the insects and their environments, so that she can learn more about them. It's well worth it for the young nature lover.
I have not read this book cover to cover. In fact it is probably a ridiculous purchase for a four-year-old girl. But that four year old girl is crazy about bugs and dinosaurs. When I discovered it in the store I had to get it for her birthday. These illustrations are gorgeous. They are loaded with detail. As each page is turned, the images pop out of the page and are accompanied by the sounds the animals make in that environment. On the other side in a smaller image wherein each creature is numbered. The text on the page pairs up the bug with its name and information about it. This isn't a book I would get for our library, but as a gift, even four a four year old, it's perfect.
