This book was interesting because plot-wise, I was enjoying the story. When it came to the romance? Very insta-love and not really developed. The writing style of this was interesting because we had our main storyline, but the first 50 pages sets up the story and then we would get scenes that are from moments in the past that help fill in missing information of what had just happened from someone else's point of view. I don't really love being taken a few moments back into a story to see what happened from someone else's perspective because that took me more out of the story and confused me because I wasn't aware we were back in time instead of continuing on with the narrative.
I did enjoy how Zevia was on this ship and Sam because intrigued by her. Unfortunately, there weren't really a lot of scenes of Sam and Zevia falling in love. They said they were interested in each other and then they were suddenly in love after one conversation. I really wanted more scenes with them getting to know each other and feeling tension. A lot happened where Zevia was in danger and Sam wanted to save her, but that's where his love was shown, not through actually interactions with her. I definitely wanted more on the romance front.
I loved seeing characters of color represented historical romance and we did have a lot of conversations about how Sam wasn't respected as second in command on the ship because people thought he wasn't good enough because he was Black. Sam was determined to make his way up to captain and prove to everyone that he could run his own ship. I really liked Sam's character and how driven he was and passionate he was about sailing. Overall, this book was really great, the romance was just severely lacking for me.
