Serenity Point #1

Bigger Than the Sky

Rate this book
Five years ago, I left my fiancé, hotter than hot Navy SEAL Kade Kelly, at the altar.

No, I’m not an idiot.

Yes, I had my reasons.

Now I’ve made a new life for myself working at a large firm in Richmond and I’ve left the past behind. Or so I thought.

Upon returning to my hometown of Serenity Point, Virginia, to take care of some business, I find that Kade’s now home for good and he’s none too happy about my being here.

Two months. That’s all I’m staying then I’m out of here. Unless I believe the town’s pink-haired psychic’s prediction. Or embrace the sense of belonging I feel at being back home. Or give in to the emotions stirring inside when Kade's attention is suddenly on me.

He scares the crap out of me.

He thrills me.

He used to tell me our love was bigger than the sky.

I always knew ours was a once-in-a-lifetime love. So how can he be so sure it can happen again?

As a huge fan of second chance love and Alpha male romance, I could not resist reading this book after I read the blurb. Here, I'll just show you so you can see for yourself:

"Five years ago, I left my fiancé, hotter than hot Navy SEAL Kade Kelly, at the altar. No, I’m not an idiot. Yes, I had my reasons... Upon returning to my hometown, I find that Kade’s now home for good... He scares the crap out of me. He thrills me. He used to tell me our love was bigger than the sky.... I always knew ours was a once-in-a-lifetime love. So how can he be so sure it can happen again?"

The entire story is told to us from Amelia's POV and the tone of it is actually quite light-hearted! It's a full-length novel but a very fast read and I found myself easily breezing though the pages. Overall, I'd say that it was a fun read with a sexy romance that tugged my heart strings mixed in with some small-town drama.

Kade was the highlight of the book for me. I totally loved him. He was a sweet Alpha male. Very dominant, broody and possessive, but not in an overbearing way. That poor guy really had his heart broken when she'd left. But, being the big badass Alpha that he was, he was determined not to lose her a second time.

"Every night, babe, closed my eyes, saw your face."

It was kind of a classic storyline. He loves her, he wants her back, so he rescues her, brings her to his home, protects her, wants to rekindle their romance... while there wasn't anything really surprising about the storyline, I still totally bought it. Kade made me swoon and I loved seeing him work to get his girl back.

Amelia was funny. I liked her 'voice' and she gave the whole story fun vibe. I'm not going to lie, the drama did get quite "over-the-top" at times but for some reason, it mostly just worked for me. I wasn't trying to take things seriously, and just found myself loving their romance and overall feeling quite entertained by the story.

"My emotions have been flipping out since the moment I saw him and the I'm-really-sorry-I-left-your-gorgeous-ass-at-the-altar-five-years-ago-I-dont-know-what-else-to-do-but-apologize-but-now-you've-killed-me-by-buying-the-house-I-loved-which-makes-me-want-to-stab-you-repeatedly-but-would-you-mind-so-much-if-I-fuck-you-first-before-murdering-you thing I've got going is wearing me out."

There's plenty of steam in this this book! They'd had years of history together and once they rekindled their romance, things got quite hot... many times... in many places... and many positions ;)

"Open your eyes," I hear his gravelly voice call to me.

When I do, my eyes lock onto his, which are so full of intensity… so full of pride because he knows he's made me come hard… and so full of love.

There were a few things that had me rolling my eyes (especially that extra bit of drama at the end - omg! O.o) but I honestly just went with it. For whatever reason, things that might otherwise have turned me away, actually just worked for me here. I think the main reason was the fact that the romance was so strong and so heartfelt that it just kept the story very centered and I really appreciated that.

"Loved you a long time. Never stopped. Was lost without you those five years. Don't even know how I kept breathing, but somehow I did. And now here you are."

Kade and Amelia's story was completely wrapped up at the end of this book with a HEA and a really sweet epilogue, but there is a secondary side story (involving their friends) that leads you right into the next book. And I actually really love that story set up -- it sounds deliciously heart-wrenching -- so I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series whenever it comes out!

Overall, I found this book really entertaining -- I swooned. It was hot. Cute. Funny. Romantic. Steamy. As I said, it got to be a little 'much' at times, but it wasn't that big a deal and I'm really happy I read it!

Oh, and also, I seriously love the cover and the way that the title ties in with the story.

Rating: 4 stars. Standalone (first in a series of standalones).

New to me author Harper Bentley’s first installment in her “Serenity Point” series is an utterly charming and wildly romantic tale that takes place in Small Town USA where family and friends are interwoven. Five years ago a runaway bride left her very hot, sexy and swoon worthy groom standing at the altar. Returning to her hometown to take care of family matters years later, a second chance at love may be possible when Amelia and Kade find themselves on the same turf once again with sparks flying. A little hint of danger adds intrigue to the story as well.

All those special elements I yearn for in a good solid romance are met here. The chemistry between the ex-Navy Seal and the lady accountant is so intense it practically ignites the pages. A cast of wonderfully drawn characters, who are smart and realistic, provides additional allure. The dialogue is witty, strong and endearing just like the characters. It doesn’t hurt that the hero is an ex-Navy Seal either! And there's an Epilogue that puts a smile on your face and wraps your heart in love.

If at the end I still love a book despite its flaws, that’s the true test of a great read for me. And this one certainly was. Also, I want to compliment the beautiful cover and perfectly chosen title that gives true meaning to this story.

Wonderfully written and a true delight to read! Readers will be glad to also know that the book easily stands on its own and is a complete story. But I am excited and can hardly wait to see what Harper Bentley offers up next in this series.

HOLY HOTNESS BATMAN!!! This story is such an amazing story. I really, really, really LOVE Kade! I mean like he is the epitome of the all alpha, but sweet and oh so sexy! He is most definitely my newest book boyfriend. This is a book about second chances and it will draw you in from the very beginning until the very end. This is a new author for me, but she is definitely on my must read list now. I really love the two main characters, Kade and Amelia, and think they're written splendidly and felt that they are very real. The storyline flows nicely. I must say that there were times where I really wanted to scream at Amelia, but even at that point I was still rooting for them to make it. Cassie had me cracking up. I want her to be my best friend. I am really hoping that Cassie, Brody, and Mike get their own stories! I look forward to reading much more from this author. This is definitely a 5 AMAZEBALLS star read. I recommend everyone reading and loving this one as much as I did.

A copy was gifted in exchange for an honest review.

I loved, loved, loved this book!!! it even might be my favourite so far by the lovely Harper. ♥ often times I felt like I've read a Kristen Ashley or Jill Shalvis book and these two are my all time favourite authors by far. I'm a sucker for second chance romances and this one delivered all it promised to be and then some. Amelia was quirky and sweet and I did understand where she was coming from so I didn't felt annoyed by her. I'd rather cheered for her to get her head together and finally be with the man she's meant to be. and Kade... *dreamy sigh* a sizzling hot former SEAL who played in a band and still knows how to play guitar and sing... oh yes, please! ♥ I loved his alpha talk, short sentences that were still right on point. *phew* lets not forget all the adorable second characters. I simply can't wait to read book 2 in the series. Please hurry up, Harper?! ♥ xox

There's no question that this was a five star read for me; I would give it more if I could! I absolutely LOVED Bigger Than the Sky!!! It is an amazing read and I am so glad and lucky to have read it.

Ever since she left Serenity Point, Millie's been numb emotionally and when she has to go back to take care of her grandparents' garage, she's flooded with emotions. Mill feels confused, guilty about leaving, and insecure about where she stands with Kade Kelly. She wants him, she still loves him, and seeing him again just feels right, but she doubts his feelings for her.

There's no question that Kade wants her and he's going to do everything in his power to keep her. But they have a lot of obstacles to face, some heartbreaking and others that have a much more sinister nature.

I can't tell you how much I loved this book. I loved the whole Runaway Bride aspect. Of course, Amelia's not as extreme as Julia Roberts was. She truly loved Kade and felt – still does feel – horrible about leaving, but she had understandable reasons and no one, not even Kade, faults her for them after some time has passed.

I LOVED the humor in this book! Oh my gosh, it’s a laugh-out-loud-don't eat-anything-while-you-read-because you-will-choke book. I swear it had me laughing my butt off most of the time. The characters are just hilarious, especially when Amelia, and her best friend, Cassie, get together. It's truly romantic comedy at its best.

Mill is totally awesome. She has a great sense of humor; she's so smart, sassy, and devious. She does have her issues, but she wasn't so annoying about them that you wanted to strangle her. She was believable and enjoyed her as the heroine.

Kade is a sexy, alpha man-beast. He is a man of few words, but oh, when he does have something to say, he will make you shiver and swoon. He's like a quadruple threat: he's a Navy man, he can sing, play the guitar, and he's in a band. I loved his alphaness and possessiveness. Kade is just so HOT!

"Come here," he orders, his eyes locking onto mine making me shiver. God.
"Kade."
"Here, Amelia."
I pull my bottom lip between my teeth and I go there but I do it slowly. When I get to him, I see he's not very happy that I took my time.
"F*ck you against the house, you hesitate like that again."

I adored almost all of the characters that live in the small town of Serenity Point. I live a small town and I can tell you that Ms. Bentley really hit the nail on the head with them. They are so real and she has truly captured the essence of small town life and the people who live in them.

Those are just some of the many reasons why I love this book! It is a standalone with a HEA that is beautiful and left me with a huge smile on my face. It's a feel-good read and I'll definitely pick it up again. I can't wait to read the next book the book in the series.

I told you that I couldn't tell how much I loved this book, but I was wrong. My love for it is Bigger Than the Sky. ~ Paige, 5 stars

~~~
Five years ago, Amelia Hale-Chapman left her fiancé, hotter than hot Navy SEAL Kade Kelly, at the altar. She left without warning, no apology, no notice. Young, scared and unsure if she could handle Kade’s frequent absences and high probability of injury due to his job, she started a new life. But when she returns to Serenity Point to finally sell her grandparent’s garage, Amelia comes face to face with her past.
Kade Kelly has retired and purchased the lumber company directly across the street from the garage. Kade isn’t happy Amelia is back in town—under his gruff exterior though, he’s thrilled! He never stopped loving Amelia, now he just needs to prove it to her and get her to admit she still loves him too.
I’m a SUCKER for a second chance romance. I loved everything about this book. The characters and story line were very well written and I couldn’t stop myself from being drawn into the redevelopment of the love story between Kade and Amelia.
I loved being along for the ride as these two characters, now with the maturity of hindsight, admit that five years ago they weren’t ready for each other. It was nice to take a break from the angst-ridden, twisted, dark books that I have been drawn to lately, and read a true feel good, happy ever after, non-cliffhanger book.
Was it predictable? Yes. Did I know from the very first chapter Amelia and Kade would be together in the end? Yes. Did I care that I knew how it would end? HELL NO! I loved every word, every bit. I just enjoyed the story and, because I didn’t have to think, I could just feel… and I felt GREAT after finishing with a big ol’ smile on my face. ~ Missy, 5 stars
I really wanted to love this story, who wouldn't when it involves a super hot, alpha ex-navy SEAL?!
Alas, although Kade is a great character, taciturn and hot with a sensitive side, I couldn't get on with the females in this book. It's as if he was from a different story all together.
Amelia left her fiancé at the alter, left town without a word and hasn't been back since. She's now returned to tie up the loose ends, the garage she was left when her grandparents died, needs to be sold.
Naturally she's dreading seeing her ex and his family, not to mention the small town gossip. But things don't quite go according to plan. Not everyone is ready to welcome her back and it seems she has some baggage left behind at home too.
What I found most frustrating about this book was the dialogue and antics of Amelia and her best friends. Although they're 30, they talk as if they're still in high school and behave just as immaturely.
There's talk of "kissing against a shed" which is then discussed the next day with phrases like "eating your face off"...to me this smacked of "teenage talk", not something successful women in their 30s would say.
There quite a bit of celeb name dropping too, which I found detracted from the novel.
The best thing about the book was the hot scenes between Amelia and Kade - his character is well thought out and believable.
There are also a few sub-characters (all male) which are introduced and piqued my interest. I can only assume that as this is book #1 in the Serenity Point series, the stories eluded to will be featured in future books.
Despite not absolutely loving this book, I certainly didn't hate it either. Despite all this, I kind of what to know Brody and Piper's story and I'm sure Mike has a tale to tell too.
So if you can overlook (and don't mind) the slightly juvenile feel, give this book a go.
Okay, Amelia, maybe you're not an idiot, but you're a vapid, self absorbed, shallow something. I enjoyed this author's Finding Us trilogy, but this may be the most cliched story I have ever read. There is zero character development, very little backstory, and the characters are the ultimate in cliches. Kade is supposed to be the love of her life, and she left him at the altar, yet she seems to feel zero remorse or angst about the past five years, and all she talks or thinks about is his "hot body". Where are the feelings?? As for Kade, he is again, the cliched "alpha male". In fact, Amelia goes so far as to call him one in between her "GAH"s, and shallow thoughts. And, please, can the man find a PRONOUN???? This was so disappointing!
This was a really good book. I was immediately addicted, couldn't put it down.
I absolutely LOVE Kade, what an awesome, hot, sexy, strong, loving, giving man. He was what every woman would want.
And he has the chance to have a great, beautiful, successful woman, whom woke the hell up, and took her stand. The out come was perfect.
Loved this book, the characters, the story line, the writing and the humor that was put into it.
On to Always and Forever :)
The only good thing about this book was the writing..it's pretty good..other than that..there's just so many flaws...first and foremost i could not relate to either of the main characters..Amilia behaved like a spoiled brat..while Kade started out as a moody , wronged guy and was going okay when all of a sudden the author did an about turn and he started sprouting phrases like "Babe,bigger than the sky" etc..sooooo not him!!..1 star
Loved this book !!!
Thank You Ms Bentley for pulling me out of a book funk
http://amzn.to/1D0aQuY
I LOVED this book!! As I write this review, I am still thinking about the story, the characters and this town which I truly hope will develop into a series of books.
Thank you Ms. Bentley for pulling me out of a book funk with Bigger than the Sky.
I sometimes struggle with second chance romances but for me this one was so well done.
As the blurb says, Amelia leaves Kade on their wedding day. The author truly had me understanding why in this case love may not be enough in that moment.
Amelia returns to Serenity Point to deal with some family business (nope not telling you what) and yes 5 years later that puts her square in Kade's path, though Kade's orbit might be a better word because the pull these two have towards each other is tangible.
I adored Kade; this Navy Seal is clear what he wants and he wants Amelia. His kind heart and love of family had me loving this book!!
Kade is fiercely protective of his own and although this leads to a few misunderstandings it all just made me adore him even more. ( I hope this series continues long enough that we get to see Kade as a Daddy.)
Speaking of family, I loved the whole Kelly clan. His parents and siblings with their strong bonds and family ranch had me hoping Amelia would find her way home.
In the end, Kade and Amelia do open up about their past together and what it truly means to share a life together.
Though there are a few obstacles along the way and people who don't want Amelia and Kade together, watching these two come to trust each other again made my heart happy.
The epilogue for me was so well done and had me smiling from ear to ear!
I so hope we get Brody's story next because uggh my heart hurts for Kade's younger brother who so needs his happy. Oh and Mike after that because yes I fell in love with this cast.
This book was almost a "DNF" for me several times. How I made it to the end I honestly don't know. For me, neither character had any redeeming quantities whatsoever. She was a selfish, whiny witch. She has been gone for 5 years after SHE leaving HIM at the altar, yet she comes back to town, finds out he bought the house that she always wanted, and gets pissed that he brought other women into "her" house. Seriously? How old are you again? Grow up already!!! Kade was straight up an a**hole. There is an alpha-male, and then there is Kade. His character went way too far into the "alpha-male" territory for me. He didn't listen to anything she said, said how it was going to be, and that was it. And she let him do it! It was very frustrating and difficult to read. It also surprises me that this author taught English for 22 years, yet her "hero" is incapable of speaking in complete sentences. "Gotta have you now", or "Been missing you" - And this is though the entire book! If it happened every now and then, it may have been more tolerable. It isn't difficult to put a simple subject in front of these fragments to make them complete sentences. I don't get this current trend in writing at all where the heroes speak like this. Do authors think this makes them should "alpha male?" Well, it doesn't. It just makes the hero sound idiotic, and makes it very frustrating to read. I won't be continuing with this series - just this book was too much for me.
I completely missed the love story in this one. The prologue has Amelia leaving Kade on their wedding day, with scared thoughts of being alone being he's in the military. So when they meet again years later, of course, they still find each other attractive but quickly and easily fall in the sack. Back into their relationship. NO wooing, NO chocolates, NO DATING. There wasn't even a back telling of how they fell in love. Easy to say I have no connection to these characters or to the story. Kade himself was the best character in the book. He rivaled the good KA alphas we love. Very macho and very caveman with very little words. That was the BIG positive here. I would have loved more depth from his past and their togetherness. It truly had some great starts but I feel jip, especially with a character like Kade.
“Was adrift… Every night, babe, closed my eyes, saw your face. Things are gonna change.”
“Come here,”
“Kade.”
“Here, Amelia. F**k you against the house, you hesitate like that again.”
“Wanna try this again, Mill... not gonna lie. F***ed a lot of women after you, trying to get you out of my head.
Failed.
I failed. It didn’t get you outta my head. Only made it worse.
Bigger than the sky, Mill.”
It is really hard to leave this review and I realize I'm in the minority here ... but I had so many issues with this book. For starters - Kade .... his character talks like a bad ass like the males do in KA books yet she left him stranded at the altar and he didn't even go after her? He pined for her for five years and never drove the 1 hour distance to talk to her. He bought the house she always wanted. Kade was a complete push over and the way he spoke didn't match his character at all. Then there is Mill .... I'm not even sure where to begin with her. Okay - she felt bad for leaving Kade but the instant she sees him - she gets pissed that he lived his life .... its been 5 years - what did you expect? The Aidan character was trivial to me too. His showing up at the bar claiming he wanted/needed her, yet it had been nearly a year since they broke up. The final scene with him just seemed so far fetched and a stretch to add drama to a finished book. I follow a very popular book blog and have loved everything they have ever recommended until this one. I actually went to that site looking for a second chance romance ... so maybe I had my sights set too high when I was reading this - but I feel so let down.
"Bigger than the sky, Mill."
I'll admit, when I read the reasoning behind this very expression and its importance to our hero and heroine, I scoffed. It sounds cheesy, right? But not now. Now just reading it makes me grin from the inside out. Because sometimes the fact you know how a book is going to end, the fact you just know the boy and the girl will end up together just doesn't detract from the story. In this book, it really is all about the journey, not the destination.
I wasn't wild about Amelia at the beginning. She seemed so flighty and for no good reason since the only one who ever fled was her. But I came around to her in the end. Now Kade was a winner from the beginning. Sparse with his words, broody, a little overprotective so deeply in love with Amelia, I found myself rooting for him from the get-go.
I'm both terrified and excited about diving into book 2 (Brody & Piper). Knowing Ms Bentley, the author of the True Love series, we're in for an emotional rollercoaster.
Promising book and the I'm definitely going to read the next one. I just didn't like the repetitive misunderstanding and juvenile behavior of the heroine. Also, the hero's constant smirking got annoying, but he's one hot former SEAL.
Have you ever day dreamed about how a guy would be totally devoted to you and no one else?? Well, that is how Kade is to Amelia in Bigger Than The Sky. Kade and Amelia had a rough start and Amelia ran away from what she thought was her problems, only to find out later that they were her only good things in her life. I love how Amelia had been long time friends with Kade's whole family and they had that connection, keeping them together through the years. This is such a feel good story that warms your heart and makes you fall in love with all the characters as soon as you meet them.
Kade is such an Alpha Male and loves to show his dominance with Amelia. It takes Amelia awhile to realize that she still loves Kade. Amelia keeps wanting to try and blame everything on Kade and find reasons to not love him, but Kade always shines through. He is a good guy in this character and is totally devoted to making Amelia realize that he has still loved her all along. I just wanted to scream at Amelia at some points to wake up and realize what a good thing she had in Kade. All girls dream of a guy being like Kade, good looks, Alpha Male and totally devoted to Amelia. What more could a girl ask for. He was definitely protective of Amelia from the beginning and was not going to let anything happen to her despite what she though of him.
This story has a HEA and I am so glad because both Amelia and Kade so deserve it!!! This book was such an easy reading book that it took me no time to read. I kept turning the pages wanting to know what was going to become of this couple. Harper Bentley wrote a very good feel good story that warms your heart!! I look forward to more from Harper in the future!!
Bigger Than the Sky is the first novel in Harper Bentley’s new series Serenity Point. In this story, Amelia returns to her home town after running away five years ago just minutes before her wedding. Since then, she’s made a good life for herself in a different town, but is forced to return to Serenity Point to bring closure to the family business after her grandparents pass away. When she arrives to her hometown, her friends welcome her back with open arms, but that doesn’t ease the pain of facing the one person whose heart she left in pieces.
First off, I have to mention how much I enjoyed Amelia’s voice. She’s entertaining and down to earth throughout the entire novel. She does have quite a few moments of needless drama, but she handles them well every time.
When it came to Kade, I liked that he didn’t hide or hold a deep resentment for what Amelia did to him five years prior. He seemed to have reflected and placed some of the blame on himself, which was applause worthy for this story. There was definite chemistry between Amelia and Kade, and despite her moments of jealousy and lack of trust, they blended well together.
Overall, the story felt a bit contrived at times, but it was a quick read that was enjoyable for the most part. Good story with a cast of likable characters.
Amelia is returning to the small Virginia town she grew up in to fix up and then sell the filling station/mechanic shop that was left to her when her grandparents passed away. Amelia left five years ago after leaving her fiancé Kade at the altar. She had reasons for leaving, but upon returning she finds that she is still extremely attracted to Kade and he makes it clear to her that he wants another chance.
For me, the first half of this book was a lot more emotionally charged than the second half. I was really able to feel for all the characters and see their side of a story that left a lot of people hurting. It was great to see Amelia get to re-connect with people who were very important to her, and set up a life for herself that is exactly what she wants. Kade is an ex-military alpha who realized that he had a part in causing Amelia to run from their wedding  He wants to make sure that while she is in town she knows how much he still loves her and what he is ready to do to get her back. Their sexual chemistry is intense and they are clearly a good match for one another. I enjoyed the peripheral characters in this book and would gladly read more books in this series.
Was pretty good!
I thought this was a really good book. I did only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because a few things in the story bothered me. First was the fact that she just jumped to conclusions about him all the time (though the circumstances did seem questionable) and the fact that when she confronted him with it he would just smirk about it. I felt that he kind of swept aside all her accusations and didn't really treat them seriously. And the second was that I didn't feel like they really resolved why she left him. They seemed to quickly gloss over the fact that he didn't treat her concerns prior to their wedding with any seriousness...see he was making the same mistakes again! And he didn't learn his lesson!
when I started this book I knew from the start I would love it. what I failed to understand was how quickly I would come to adore this book. this story is so charming mixed with some hot, panty dropping sex to spice it all up. the characters are easily relatable. I loved everything about this story and I LOVED Amelia (Mill) and Kade. I'm hoping we get to see Brodys story next, that would be a good one!
1.5 Stars!
I can't do it! I just can't finish it. I am hero driven, I have to like the hero to enjoy the book. I just didn't like him or the heroine very much! She was selfish, he was just plain dumb! I'm sorry if someone left me at the alter and they came back to town, I would not just say oh yeah I understand and all is forgiven, without even speaking. Ugh SMH!!
I DNF this one, so the ending might have saved it for me, but I seriously doubt it!
Great second chance love story. Great characters. Hot alpha male left at the alter by the girl he has loved all his life. Instead of being bitter, he has realized what went wrong and does everything he can to get her back. Has a couple twists I didn't see coming.
Can't wait for Brody's story!
I absolutely loved this book!! Kade and Amelia were engaged and the wedding was happening when Amelia freaked and ran. She's back in her home town now and some things never change. Can they overcome their past (together and separately) or will it be too much to handle? Swoon worthy, alpha man Kade was amazing!! This book was a quick read and fun to read! Super excited for the next book!
Really liked this one. Kade was just perfect, me likey his alpha-ness. Meli on the other hand, take every insecurity out there and she had it. She had her reasons sometimes, but other times I was ready to slap a bitch. I'm ready for the next book, Brody I hope You're next.
