*A standalone in the Apsley Family Romance series Clean / closed door
This was the story I've been waiting on!! 😍 I've absolutely loved Annette & Edward's side characters in previous books, so I was thrilled to finally have theirs!
It starts out with my favorite trope, enemies to lovers, then *very* slowly leads to a sweet friends to lovers. The banter between them made me laugh so much, their chemistry was just perfection. The rivalry between Annette and Rus made the story as well - I really hope Rus gets his own story as well! 😅
I've loved every setting in Brooke's books, but this one really came alive for me. The description of the castle and ruins, the fall leaves, my mind just pictured everything. It was easy to feel everything from this book, all the heartache and emotions, slow burn romance..I'm ready for the next book now! 😍
I definitely recommend this whole series, and I would also recommend reading them in order! They could be read as standalone, but it's way more fun to follow along with the family in order!
This is the third book in the series. I have not read the others but I would say this works as a standalone. I really loved this story! Edward and Annette are wonderful characters! I love when the main characters have great banter and chemistry and these two definitely have both! They certainly like vexing each other and I loved it! I loved Edward’s devotion to his friend Ada, and how he tries to free her/rescue her. He is an abolitionist. I loved how Annette wanted to help him with it too. Overall, I loved this story and I can’t wait for the next one to see how things continue! I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Content: talk of physical abuse to spouse, talk of physical abuse to slave, and attempted sexual assault that is interrupted
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I loved Annette and Edward and their entire relationship trajectory, even the messy parts. The entire set up as to why they knew each other all the way through to them falling in love was interesting and full of both heartache and heart. They kiss in the first chapter and I was clambering to figure out how they’d eventually end up together when Annette was set against marriage and Edward was stuck in a secret money grab with Annette’s father. The drama was great and the chemistry was even better.
I think the parts that lost my interest a bit were all the parts involving the mystery. This is definitely a me problem though. It’s very rare that I enjoy a separate mystery or suspense plot in my romances unless it’s the main plot line. I always just feel like I’m more invested in one than the other so I’d definitely still recommend this and will read more from this author.
This book was highly anticipated by me. Ever since I "met" Annette and the Lieutenant, and their fake dating agreement, I loved them! Annette is not your "normal" Victorian era young lady, no... she's got...gulp... opinions! Tut, tut, not something a lady should have, and Annette has it in spades! She's met her match though, in a certain lieutenant... I swear I had a grin on my face for the duration of the read that no one could wipe off. Well, mostly...there were a few moments where the emotions threatened to overwhelm me too.
Do I love these characters? Oh heck YES!!! I absolutely adore how different they are, Annette is steadfast in her desire to be independent, not something a young lady of her standing does, and her sassy mouth reduces me to giggles, constantly! Edward is suave, handsome, glib, a flirt, a tease, very opinionated himself and the catch of society. Pursuing their own agenda, Annette to convince her father she doesn't need a husband, Edward to locate a shady but well respected captain who deals in slavery, they end up together in Kent. Not TOGETHER together, just the same place at the same time for different reasons. And here starts the a concoction of information, misinformation, deals that are...not conducive to trust... and a tonne of fun missteps! From scheming mum's to manipulative dad's, to uncovery and discovery, to, well, heck, the most beautiful, exciting read! Brooke tackles real issues sensitivity, issues like spousal abuse, fear of commitment, facing ones fears, and overcoming them. The action of the heart is the most difficult to pen credibility, and the author does so succinctly, sublimely, superbly, evoking every feel along the way.
Pitted against each other, Edward and Annette weigh up the unintended attraction to each other, denial of said feelings, a secret both keep close to their chests and a rather explosive relationship! Funnily enough, neither realise it, but their convictions align... dedicated and passionate about abolishing slavery drives Edward to accept Annette's dad's offer to visit. Lord Paxton is just as passionate an abolitionist, but he has a trick up his sleeve...one that involves his outspoken daughter Annette... Heck, Ms Losee took that event and boy did she wring it like a rag! Did I enjoy Edward trying, it was hilarious! As was Annette's confusion! Edward's task to woo Annette set off badly for him, a task he neither relished nor anticipated the boredom of this quest!
Their interaction is so sweet and tender and warm, I feel like the author engulfed me in a giant plushie! This book was darlingly delightful and funny and warming and simply sensational! Ms Losee writes clean books, no swearing, nothing beyond a kiss but oh my heck, HOW she manages to infuse her books with "hotness" is still an enigma to me! I get all hot and flustered, by a touch, by a glance, by an innuendo, in an ENTIRELY wholesome read! Now that's a major skill! A theme of family is present throughout, VERY convincingly, siblings who love one another, yet, although they prank one another, their love for each other stands out. And heck, I adored both mamas! Annette's as well as Edward's. Who I didn't like one iota is Wilcot, husband to Annette's friend Margaret, a real piece of work!
This ingenious author found a seamless way of bringing all these characters to the fore, she gave them a purpose, she gave them individuality, she even gave the loathsome Wilcot what was due to him after.....oh boy THAT was quite the chapter! I adored her flawed characters, NOT Wilcot, but she embraced how well functioning a dysfunctional family is, without compromising on loyalties and caring for each other. A complete, immersive read, where true heros emerge, reality snaps into place, emotions are tested to the limit, and a fierce love emerges like a butterfly from a cocoon....
There's friendship, loyalty, romance, mystery, even adventure in this read, a positively that permeates throughout, banter that fills my heart with joy and warmth and an ending so gorgeous, a heartfelt sigh escaped me. A story full of compassion, second chances and a glorious HEA! I have read and loved the previous books in this series, but... this book, is undisputedly my very favourite! You know the read that makes you want to do a happy jig? Yeah, THIS book is that! I can read this book over and over again and feel the same thrill each time!
EVADING THE LIEUTENANT is a delightful romp of banter and longing—I was rooting for Edward and Annette from the beginning. The yearning for freedom is palpable in the choices of the characters and the causes they champion.
Genre: Regency Romance, Sweet Romance, Clean Romance, Historical Romance Spice Level: Kisses only Historical Grit: Tackles the reality and aftermath of slavery in a sensitive and historical manner. Women's lack of land ownership and bodily autonomy is addressed. There are also mentions of abuse and men who use their power to suppress women and Black people. These details helped ground us in the world while still maintaining a clean and wholesome rating.
Give me a historical sweet novel that starts with a kiss, and you've got me. Why? Because I can't wait to see how it all works out. Those kisses are precious in sweet novels, so I know I'm in for a whirlwind of a ride.
I love Annette because she is protective of her best friend, mischievous, a planner, and sharp-tongued. The last one might be a favorite characteristic because I relate so well.
Edward is multi-dimensional and so refreshing. He's on a mission to right ills in the world. That is just plain sexy. His emotions are tangled between self-imposed duty and desire.
These two characters are so much fun as they learn the truth about each other and what they have to offer. And watch for the deal Edward is offered—he knows it's a bad idea! I had my eyes glued to the page to see how things would turn out with his decision. Another favorite moment is the trust extended by Annette when Edward hasn't outwardly earned it yet—I felt like it shows that she knows him more deeply that just his surface even if she isn't aware of it.
The reality of slavery is often ignored and not presented in romantic novels. It's a hard balance when creating a novel to delight romance readers. By adding in Edward's background on the sea and the people he met who were enslaved, creates tension but also makes the book more real. I really love it when books handle real situations like this. Because attitudes were changing, showing an abolitionist is historically accurate. I feel like it's important to understand the deep-rooted prejudice and how long society has combated it.
I absolutely loved the book, including the side characters. Even if you haven't read the other books in the Apsley Family series, you can read this novel with a complete understanding. However, I maintain that you will want to read all of them.
I definitely recommend this book!
Happy reading!
- I received an ARC. All opinions are my own and are freely given.
Annette's plans to escape the pressures of debuting to the ton had worked well. Annoyingly so. The deal with Lieutenant Paget kept unwanted suitors away from both of them but also kept him within range to be utterly obnoxious. Due to her father's illness she had to end their deal early since she would be leaving for the family home in Kent. Edward understood the reason and had no intentions of causing any problems. That was until the invite from Lord Apsley kept burning a hole in his pocket along with the need to help his political ideals move forward. And truthfully, he was bored without Miss Apsley around to provoke. When he arrives at Kent he finds himself caught in the middle of sibling shenanigans. Something he can't help himself from participating in. As Annette sees the Lieutenant more as a person she starts to think maybe her ideas of marriage could have been wrong. However, when he suddenly starts acting proper and distanced again she can't decide if her instincts were right or not. Unbeknownst to Annette, her father is plotting since he knows his illness is getting worse. Lord Apsley made a deal with Lieutenant Paget for a marriage contract, something that Edward feels guilty for even considering. But the idea of getting help with his political ventures and staying with the Apsley family has him seriously considering the deal. He knows the secret that Lord Apsley is asking him to keep about this could have serious fallout but do the goals justify the means?
These two were a lot of fun. The shenanigans, pranks, and the banter reminded me of things I do with my husband. We get an answer to why Annette has her views and honestly, I don't blame her. I loved seeing what drives Edward and how strongly and passionately he feels about these reasons. It matches the fiery temper and passion we see in Annette. The set up for a few more books are there with the Apsley family and I am curious on how these will play out. Another wonderful addition to the series.
Ever since I read the previous book in this series, I've been waiting for the story of Annette and Lieutenant Paget, because even though they couldn't stand each other, the attraction was clear. I really enjoyed this encounter between them, this time not in London society, but in the beautiful Kent countryside. I liked seeing the Apsley family in their ancestral home with their relationships and dynamics. What's more, they are going through a difficult time here, which allows us to see a deeper side to all of them. In fact, there are serious and important issues dealt with in this book, including the fight for abolition and abuse in marriage, among others. Speaking of Annette and Edward, they are great. At the beginning, with their jokes, provocations, and inevitable chemistry. The way they allowed themselves to trust each other and share their dreams and goals was very sweet. I enjoyed this read and recommend it.
Annette Apsley is determined never to marry and to live independently. So after emerging victorious and uncommitted from her season in London, she is ready to claim her inheritance, until the insufferable man she met in the city and shared a passionate kiss with shows up at her country house. Edward Paget may seem carefree to society, but he has very clear goals: to fight for the abolition of slavery and to bring justice for the crimes he has witnessed. But to achieve all that, he needs funds that he doesn't have, but which are offered to him on a silver platter on one condition: that he marry Miss Apsley. With one avoiding marriage and the other seeking it, Annette and Edward find themselves thinking and feeling that their original plans no longer seem so satisfying and that perhaps their goals can be aligned with love.
You will find: 🏰 Dual POV 🏰 Fake courtship in the past 🏰 Forced proximity 🏰 Courtship of convenience 🏰 The search for justice
This is the third book in the Apsley Family series, and although it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading them all.
Thanks to the author for the copy. All opinions are my own. Follow for more 💐
⚠️ Content guide: Slavery, abuse in marriage, attempted assault.
Engaging, humorous, and inspirational - all in a perfect package of Regency romance
Engaging style, well-developed plot (though not original, but perfectly executed), and wonderful characters help turn this novel into an amazing story. Dual POV in first person provides a great way to dive into the feelings and emotions of the characters, and what a great cast it is! Edward and Annette are a delight to watch as they fight, tease, banter, and fall in love. It is a story of romance (perfect longing, passionate attraction, only kisses), but real historical issues of slavery and abolition are discussed here, as well as domestic abuse. Add a villain, a chase, fight for the oppressed, and you’ve got a story where you’ll be “turning one more page”.
Another thing that I enjoyed is the portrayal of family relationships, some good, some difficult, some with strains, and some with understanding. The family and sibling dynamics was one of my fave parts to read.
As well as the inspirational insight into the possible friendship of Edward with John Newton. Brilliant!
Though it is a part of a series, it can be easily read as a stand-alone. Although be prepared for wanting to go and read more of this world.
Triggers: slavery (discussed), domestic abuse, loss of a loved one to sickness, SA attempt (nothing descriptive)
I had a privilege to read an advanced copy and absolutely loved it! All opinions expressed are my own.
What’s not to love? This story swept me away to another time and place from the very first pages. I was instantly hooked by the lingering tension of their previous kiss and the quiet war of wills between Annette and Edward. I wanted them together immediately… but of course, it’s never that easy, and that delicious tension is exactly what makes the story so compelling. Annette Apsley is a wonderfully stubborn, sharp-tongued heroine who refuses to trade her independence for chains, and watching her clash with the frustratingly charming Edward Paget was an absolute delight. Edward is far more than a uniform and a smile. His conviction, moral compass, and carefully guarded secrets give him real depth, making every moment of hesitation and longing ache in the best way. Just kiss again already. The romance is slow and simmering, with emotional stakes that feel genuinely earned. I loved how the story balances tender, intimate moments with larger themes of duty, injustice, and sacrifice. Edward’s struggle between his cause and his heart adds a layer to the romance, and the tension kept me turning pages until the very end. Beautifully written, emotionally rich, and brimming with longing and passion, this book delivers swoon-worthy romance with meaningful substance. If you love historical romance with strong heroines, honorable heroes, and a love that demands courage from both sides, this one is absolutely worth your time
Evading the Lieutenant (Apsley Family Book 3) by: Brooke J. Losee @brookejlosee
••I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
~One haunting kiss can derail the best laid plans...
-Evading the Lieutenant, is the delightful, third story in the Apsley Family Series. While this clean coded door story can easily be read as a stand alone, I would suggest still reading in order to fully enjoy the dear characters, beauty, and humor within this fun series. I absolutely enjoyed the witty banter and sparks of delightful chemistry between dear characters that flows so well within. More so, it was the dear devotion, conviction, and layered depth in between the pages that had my heart. I loved the wonderful balance between the tender smell moments of care and the big moments of duty, protection, and of great sacrifices. This story not only demanded but also precisely beckoned the call for courage and standing for dedication, honor, and love! This is a story worth the dear read!🙌🏻📚❤️
“You are that place for me. With you is where I feel most at peace. You are my sure place of comfort.”
•Content: mentioning of physical abuse to spouse, talk of physical abuse to slave, and attempted sexual assault that is interrupted. Kisses only.

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚 Evading the Lieutenant Apsley Family, Book 3 by Brooke J. Losee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📝 My Thoughts: I am officially obsessed with the Apsley family! It starts with a clever fake courtship in London and transitions into a beautiful story of healing and purpose at Kenwick Castle. Annette is a firecracker heroine who values her independence, and Edward is a hero with a heart of gold and a very noble cause. Their chemistry is electric, and the banter is top tier!
💖 Why I Loved It: The sibling dynamics are everything! The relationship between Annette and her older brother Rus had me laughing out loud. The "salted tart" incident was peak comedy. Seeing Rus fall for Annette’s trap, only to drag poor Edward into the crossfire, was priceless. Watching the lieutenant try to be a gentleman while his eyes watered from a mouthful of salt was a highlight! Beyond the humor, I loved how the story tackled deeper themes like abolition and women’s rights.
🔖 Favorite Quote: "Broken things can still tell stories. They are far more likely to be good stories, in my opinion."
📌 Final Verdict: This is a must read for anyone who loves a clean Regency romance with lots of wit, a bit of mystery, and a whole lot of heart. It works as a standalone, but you will definitely want to read the rest of the series!
Potential Triggers: Mentions of off-page spousal abuse and historical themes of slavery/abolition.
This book is absolutely amazing and I loved the dual POV in the first person. This way you are able to get both Annette's and Edward's true feelings and emotions throughout the book. You can tell they live each other before they even realize it themselves through all the different ways they vex one another but also how they are there for one another.
Even though this is a romance story, it still touches bases with some actual history issues during that time frame. Such as slavery, abolition, and domestic violence (which was something no one discussed during the olden days).
Both characters are abolitionists in their own ways. Edward is chasing a villain to save his friend who is a slave. While Annette wants to end slavery as well as how wives are slaves to their husbands and have to suffer domestic abuse without a way out.
Each page leaves you wondering when they will finally admit their feelings, will Edward catch the villain and save his friend, and will each of them find a way to fight abolition together for both slavery and women?
Thank you Brooke for letting me be a part of your ARC. I cannot wait to see what other stores you have to tell!
Evading the Lieutenant is a highly entertaining, clean, historical romance. Edward has returned from years in the Navy and his mother is making sure every young lady knows he’s available. Annette has made a bargain with her father, that if she can go through an entire season and not find someone to marry, he will bestow upon her, her dowry/inheritance. Edward comes up with a plan to pretend courting Annette since she does not want to get married. This is the perfect deal, until it isn’t. The storyline is fun and engaging, the characters are utterly charming and each have a noble cause. The story does jump into their pretend courtship a bit abruptly, but the author has a great bonus edition that explains the courtship in much more detail. I did not want to put the story down. It was just a delight to read. It is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone.
Evading the Lieutenant by Brooke J. Losee is a charming and engaging Regency romance that I truly enjoyed.
After fulfilling her duty to entertain suitors during the London Season, Annette Apsley is relieved to escape the marriage mart with her independence intact. Determined never to be cornered into marriage, she is dismayed when her father invites the frustratingly handsome Lieutenant Edward Paget to their country estate. Annette is resolved to avoid him at all costs, especially since they already share the memory of one haunting, passionate kiss.
Edward Paget, shaped by years in the Royal Navy and haunted by the injustices of the slave trade, is determined to fight for abolition. Without the necessary funds or family support, he accepts a troubling challenge from a viscount: win Annette’s hand in marriage, and her dowry will be matched to fund Edward’s cause. What begins as a calculated plan quickly becomes complicated as Edward discovers that Annette is nothing like the poised London lady he remembers. She is spirited, stubborn, and far more intriguing than he anticipated.
I really enjoyed this couple. Their chemistry felt natural, their banter was delightful, and their first kiss was genuinely swoon worthy. Annette is an unconventional heroine who still maintains propriety, and I loved that Edward appreciated her exactly as she was. The romance is clean and closed-door, with a strong emotional focus.
The story takes place mostly in the countryside, creating a quieter, more intimate setting, with just a brief glimpse of town at the beginning. I also enjoyed the prank wars between Annette and her brother, which added humor and warmth. Subtle faith elements appear near the end and were a welcome addition.
Content-wise, the book discusses heavier themes including slavery, spousal abuse, and a brief on-page attack, all handled thoughtfully within the historical context. The cover is stunning, and the interior artwork and chapter headings are beautifully done.
This was a satisfying standalone romance, and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the Apsley Family Romance series.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and was under no obligation to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
“…there’s clearly a spark between the two of you.” A spark? Yes, there was certainly that. One that might burn the entire country down if left unattended. Hatred had that kind of power.”
Inspirational romance with lots of teasing balanced by serious themes like slavery and domestic abuse. The characters were engaging. The romance was sweet (kisses only).
We have an honorable hero, who learns how to balance his priorities, and a strong female lead who has vowed never to get married. Take a ride through the ups and downs as they discover the love between them.
Evading the Lieutenant is a charming, heartfelt Regency romance filled with wit, slow-burn tension, and emotional depth. Brooke J. Losee delivers a delightful pairing in Annette and Edward two strong, principled characters whose values and vulnerabilities make their connection irresistible. The blend of gentle humor, social conscience, and clean romance creates a story that feels both cozy and meaningful. A satisfying standalone that will please readers who love intelligent heroines, honorable heroes, and romance built on trust and genuine feeling.
I had been waiting for Annette's book ever since I met her in the last book. And her story didn't disappoint!
The book is very well written and flows smoothly. I related with Annette so quickly but I was also so happy for her to find the Lieutenant. Together they make you laugh, swoon and care about not just them but the people around.
This series just keeps getting better and better!! The banter and swoon is simply more than five star worthy! Annette and Edward who wouldn't fall in love with these two lovebirds?! Kudos to Ms. Losee for another outstanding book. Bring the rest of the series on!
They looked as the most wonderful couple of the season. It was a fake courtship. The Lieutenant has more on his mind of trying to rid slavery. Later Annette was in the same mind. That was better than a courtship. It was a marriage.
✅My thoughts: Oh, what fun getting to know Annette Apsley and Lieutenant Edward Paget! From the first pages of the book, I could tell we were going to go on a fun journey between the two main characters. And, what fun it was!!! Evading the Lieutenant was an intriguing and humorous regency romance. The banter between Annette and Edward was laugh out loud for sure. The romance aspect is tension filled and slow-burn. The story also revolved around a more serious issue of slavery and the fight for abolition. I enjoyed reading Evading the Lieutenant. I wonder where the author will take us next?????
