Sport for Our Neighbours: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
What if Mr. Bennet had changed everything—five years before Bingley let Netherfield Park?

When old friends from his university days visit Longbourn, Mr. Bennet is forced to confront the consequences of years spent in idle amusement and neglect of his family. Determined to do better by his wife and daughters, he takes a more active role in their upbringing, their education, and their futures.

By the time Mr. Bingley leases Netherfield five years later, the Bennet family is very different. The daughters are accomplished, poised, and sensible—and the household is one that garners admiration rather than ridicule.

When Mr. Darcy first encounters Elizabeth Bennet, he is immediately intrigued—not only by her beauty but by her wit, confidence, and keen mind. She, in turn, is drawn to the man behind the proud exterior. Sparks fly, and a connection forms quickly. But not everyone welcomes their growing attachment.

As whispers circulate and schemes take shape, Darcy and Elizabeth must navigate not only the figuring out their relationship but also the meddling of those who would keep them apart. Can their connection withstand the pressures of pride, prejudice, and plotting minds?

Sport for Our Neighbours, Challenge from Our Families

4.5* rounded up

I've read and own all of this author's e-books, so I clearly enjoy reading the fruits of her creative mind. I believe that this new story has been my favourite so far. When I compare her writing in this new story to her first novels, such as What Happened After Lambton and A Different Impression, there is a significant difference in style, structure, and editing. There is more witty dialogue, more showing instead of telling, and less repetition—overall, Sport for Our Neighbours is a well-written tale where Darcy and Elizabeth come to an understanding earlier, and all of the Bennets' flaws are called out and addressed earlier than in canon. There is very slight angst due to the reader being able to see the villains' scheming, but our heroes are able to stymie them in clever ways.

Although the novel is 445 pages long, I think that it is captivating enough to finish in one day if "real life" doesn't get in the way.

A Good Read

I often mention this in my reviews of Melissa Anne's books, but it remains true: I love it when Darcy and Elizabeth come to an early understanding. This aspect alone keeps me returning for more.

- I like the better-behaved Bennet family.

- There were a few interesting plotlines, such as Matlock's drama and Uncle Gardiner's surprising connection, that I wish had been explored further.

- If you like a few good setdowns for Caroline, this book will not disappoint. Other than that, the story kept to an even pace.

Though the blurb might indicate that we would get to see more of the Bennet family and the changes wrought by the patriarch after being berated by a friend to make changes, this story is mostly focused on Darcy. We see this story mostly from his POV rather than Elizabeth's and in truth it is not that bad of a way to approach this story and I quite liked it. In turn we got to see less of the Bennet sisters other than just mentions of Jane, Mary and Kitty and did not get many, if at all any interactions between the sisters let alone with Darcy. There was a lot more plotting by the protagonists in this story and they seemed more vile here. I quite liked the story and enjoyed it considerably.

What if Mr. Bennet's friendships with two men from his university days act as the catalyst he needs to become an involved parent and take a hand in the affairs of his estate? What if his friendship with George Darcy continues with his son? And, what if a Darcy relation takes great exception to the friendship and more that develops between young Darcy and the Bennets?

This 'what if' variation on Pride and Prejudice was my first encounter with Melissa Anne's writing. I was eager to try her books and was well gratified by the experience. There was a nice suspense thread when Darcy's uncle, Wickham, and Caroline Bingley offered a darker conflict for the romance pair and their relations.

As I noted in my introduction, the variation portion begins from the outset with Mr. Bennet getting an enlightening visit from his university friends which is the motivation he needs to stop hiding away in his library feeling bitter about the way his wife entrapped him into marriage and having all girls. His steps to alter the family's path were drastic, but did wrought change. I did feel that five years was a bit quick for all the alterations in the family (even Elizabeth's brilliant grasp of scholarly and household skills) and especially the financial reversal experiences, but I went along with it because I was enjoying the storyline.

Sport for Their Neighbors was low on the internal drama and left all the conflict to come from outside sources so this was relatively low-angst, but never boring. I will eagerly take up another Melissa Anne variation tale now that I've enjoyed Sport For Their Neighbors.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. What if Mr. Bennet had changed everything, five years before Bingley let Netherfield Park?

When old friends from his university days visit Longbourn, Mr. Bennet is forced to confront the consequences of years spent in idle amusement and neglect of his family. Determined to do better by his wife and daughters, he takes a more active role in their upbringing, their education, and their futures. By the time Mr. Bingley leases Netherfield five years later, the Bennet family is very different. As whispers circulate and schemes take shape, Darcy and Elizabeth must navigate not only the figuring out their relationship but also the meddling of those who would keep them apart. Can their connection withstand the pressures of pride, prejudice, and plotting minds? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

When Mr Bennet meets his old friend from university, George Darcy, the latter is shocked: Bennet has done nothing to prevent his family from misery after his demise. After a severe scolding and some thinking Bennet finally comes to his senses and begins to change.
Five years later the Bennet family is changed. The daughters are all accomplished, sensible, have respectable dowries and the Bennet family is respected all over Meryton. When Bingley’s party arrives Darcy is immediately intrigued by Bennet's enchanting second daughter and Elizabeth is also drawn to him. Soon sparks fly between them and they form an attachment. But not everybody is in favour of this development as some have their own plans about Darcy and Elizabeth's future.
Will Darcy and Elizabeth be able to withstand the schemes to separate them? Will they finally find the culprit and punish him? Or will the schemers be successful and tear them apart?

The book was very well written by the author Melissa Anne. I like her style of writing very much. Most of the time there are no misunderstandings or ill feelings between Darcy and Elizabeth in her books. This is also the case here. Darcy and Elizabeth face no problems between each other, they only have to fight obstacles against their union together.

What I liked most about the book was that Bennet finally takes action and ensures that his daughters and his wife have the best opportunities for a successful and happy life and that they are provided for after his death. He finally does his duty and secures their future. I like that he now takes an interest in his family and that he does not only flee to his study. I like this more active Mr Bennet. I had the feeling that he also is more happy with this new role because there are not so many sardonic comments from him in the book but he keenly observes everything, most of the time with a loving eye.

I love the development of Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship. The fall for each other nearly from the first moment (Darcy’s interest is even piqued before their first meeting because of the way his father and Mr Bennet talk of Elizabeth). I like that they know each other of some sorts due to Mr Bennet's correspondence with Darcy after the death of Darcy's father which Elizabeth also read. When they now meet in person they are curious about the real person and full of anticipation. I like that from nearly the first moment there are sparks between them. When they finally acknowledge their feelings they are very expressive and often hold hands or seek the other out. I especially loved that bodily contact with Elizabeth, for example through an embrace, was a means to calm Darcy’s anger or agitation. That made him a bit vulnerable but therefore more likeable.

I also enjoyed that, due to the improvements in the Bennet household, Darcy’s first thought was to bring his sister to them so that she can form a friendship with girls of her age. That shows that Mr Bennet's change in behaviour was the right thing to do, now his family is not objectionable any more. With the closeness of Georgiana to the other girls Darcy also has the emotional support he needs to follow his heart and woo Elizabeth.

Some of the usual villains have their appearance here but also an unexpected one. Fortunately Darcy, Elizabeth and their friends are able to deal with them before they can cause lasting harm. The inconveniences caused by them only bring ODC together more closely and speeds up their wish for a wedding.

If you like to know how the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth will unfold when Darcy, due to Mr Bennet’s improvements, meets a changed Bennet family you should definitely read this book.

I highly recommend it.

What if Mr Bennet had some gentlemen friends from university, a Mr Darcy and Mr Livesay, who remained in communication with him after graduation? What if these friends came to visit, Mr Darcy bringing his son with him, and found the Bennets in their usual manner…Mr Bennet indolent, Mrs Bennet flighty and silly, and the youngest daughters behaving wildly? What if they, unlike Mr Bennet, found the situation less than amusing? The only thing his friends found to admire was the behavior and actions of Bennet’s two eldest daughters (who were away visit the Gardiners) when they discovered that Elizabeth was, at age 15, essentially managing the estate and both girls taking care of the tenants.

Bennet’s friends have much to say to him about his lack of oversight for his family and estate. Both Darcys are quite impressed, however, with young Elizabeth and disappointed not to meet her on their visit. Bennet does take his friends’ advice to heart and begins to take a greater interest in his family and holdings. An incorrigible Lydia is sent to school and Kitty and Mary acquire a companion. All the daughters have access to masters to acquire additional accomplishments. Mrs Bennet still has ambitions for her daughters but has learned to keep them under control.

When Darcy comes to Hertfordshire with Bingley he is already prepared to admire Elizabeth, but the reality of her is much more than he ever imagined. Bingley is immediately enamored with Jane but has a sister who is out of control. Darcy has some family trouble brewing with the Earl of Matlock. The Earl is trying to force Darcy into marriage with the daughter of a peer and it seems he has information about Georgiana’s near elopement and is prepared to use it as leverage. When Bennet is told of the situation Darcy is quite shocked to learn that his father and Bennet signed a marriage contract for himself and Elizabeth before he died.

What will the existence of such a contract mean for Darcy and Elizabeth? Will it be Darcy’s salvation or will Elizabeth object to having her choice eliminated? How far will the Earl go to force his will on Darcy? What will Bingley’s out-of-control sister do to obtain her goal to marry Darcy, at any cost? And how do Lady Catherine, Collins and Wickham fit into the equation (and, yes, they certainly have their roles to play!)? With some additional peripheral characters added into the story this is a delightful read. The chapters are suspenseful and make you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. In spite of the intrigue and suspense there is also plenty of romance. A real home run!

Imaginative

Mr Bennett attends Cambridge with George Darcy, and maintains a relationship after graduating. When Elizabeth is fourteen Darcy Sr visits Longbourn with his young son Fitzwilliam, along with another of their friends, Mr Livesay. It proves to be a turning point in Mr Bennett's life when his old friends point out the serious flaws in his behavior towards his family and his estate. Elizabeth isn't home at the time, but when Darcy Sr learns how much she helps with running the estate, he secretly determines that Elizabeth might be an excellent future match for his son.

Darcy comes to Hertfordshire as usual, but is already predisposed to like Elizabeth, since he's kept up correspondence with Mr Bennett since Darcy Sr's death. Darcy and Elizabeth hit it off quickly, but between Lord Matlock and Caroline Bingley, there's plenty of opposition to their match.

I like these variations where the Bennett family is more normal, and where Darcy isn't so pompous. There's some pretty awful villains in the story, so there's nice drama. The bad guys get satisfying comeuppances. The romance of ODC is wonderful. The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for an engaging and romantic book.

The elder Mr Darcy is friends with Thomas Bennet from university and he, with help, convinces Bennet to take control of his estate and his family before it is too late. Fitzwilliam Darcy then visits a much different Longbourne and Bennet family. It also features an awful Caroline Bingley and threats o scandal and bullying from Darcy’s family. Everyone must work together to thwart evil plans and live happily ever after(s).

Premise: A visit from his university friends (one of which is the elder Mr Darcy) shakes Mr Bennet out of his complacency and he sets out to Do Better. Five years later, the Bennet family has improved greatly when Mr Bingley lets Netherfield. Darcy and Elizabeth hit it off immediately and Darcy (mostly) manages to keep his foot out of his mouth. Maybe because his uncle the Earl is a Bad Earl and Darcy suspects he might know more about Wickham and Georgiana than he's letting on?

What I liked: I mostly read JAFF when I want something comforting. To see beloved familiar characters in new situations. This fulfills the order. It's mostly slow but sweet, with some mild tension in the last quarter of the story.

Characterization: Much worse Caroline. Worse Wickham (though he's not in it for long). Better Bennets. Spineless Bingley.

Spice level: Low. Some passionate kisses and a fade to black wedding night.

Any non-canon parings: Yes.

Other notes or issues: This is mostly warm and cozy, but there is a bit of a mystery about what the Bad Earl is up to, and I wish that part could've been expanded a bit, or spread out more over the course of the story.

A Pride and Prejudice variation where Mr Bennet gets a kick up the butt that makes him take his role as a father and husband more seriously about five years before the canon events.

Caroline Bingley is a grasping, vicious, manipulative, cunning shrew.

Mr Wickham is the pawn of another villain (who threatens to ruin Georgiana and Lizzy).

Mr Collins is a spanner in the works.

Lady Catherine is "most seriously displeased" but doesn't appear on page.

Mr Bingley is weak, and shallow.

Lizzy is everything perfection. Mr Darcy is attracted to her before he even meets her.

To be honest, I think this book might have been more readable if it had been shorter. There are so very many conversations happening in various locations between various characters, that I found myself skimming from about the 50% mark.

Brilliant!

Loving this. A sweet Darcy, feeling at home with the Bennets.
An improved Elizabeth, smart and witty but softened by wisdom.
A reformed Mr Bennet, who turns around his life and that of his family, after friends from University stage an intervention.
So good to see Caroline being put in her place (repeatedly)
Add in an evil Uncle and a venal Viscount.
Watch the sparks fly!

I had liked "Worthy of her trust" by the same author but I didn't like "Sport for our neighbours" : its pace is too slow and I struggled to finish it. I persevered though, encouraged by the very good reviews on Good Reads, but I skipped a lot in the third part. I don't particularly like variations where ODC comes to an early understanding. They very rarely work because the focus is then transferred to mean opponents. There are three in this variation and the author fails to make them interesting. Two are rather inconsistent: Wickham and the earl. One is too present : Miss Bingley. Her reactions to very harsh setdowns and her subsequent actions are not believable. She is deranged. To center a plot on the actions of a deranged (and ridiculous) character is not a good idea. I didn't recognise Darcy. He felt like a super Bingley guided by stronger and more clever characters, Elizabeth, the Colonel, the countess and Mr Bennet. Not appealing.

Sport for Our Neighbours is a story where Mr. Bennett is shaken out of his indolent ways by an early visit from his Cambridge friends and young Darcy. They take a dim view of his indulgence of his family and the estate’s declining revenue. They pressure him to do better. After his father dies, young Darcy continues their correspondence. This sets the stage for his visit when Bingley leases Neatherfield. While Darcy and Elizabeth seem to get on well, there are forces at work that seek to wreak havoc. I found this an enjoyable read with just enough tension to drive the story. I enjoyed seeing a better Bennett and another character play the major villain. I received an advanced reader copy of the story.

A captivating rendition.

Despite deviating from established canon, the narrative skillfully preserves the core characteristics of the characters, resulting in a captivating and compelling storyline. The romantic development between the protagonists was especially delightful and nuanced, adding depth and emotional resonance to the overall experience.

I find the dialogues and the character actions a bit unrealistic for me. In the beginning, elder Mr. Darcy begins to criticize Mr. Bennet minutes after they begin their conversation, at one point even younger Darcy joins. I don't think either would behave like this and even if they did criticise, it won't happen so openly like this.

Then we have Darcy being so impressed by Elizabeth helping her father in her estate that he begins to think he might marry her in future and even has a conversation with his father. He has never even met her, has seen the behaviour of her parents and only thing he knows about her is that she helps with the estate. We also have a 9 year old Lydia trying to flirt with Darcy - i feel like the other characters are all comically bad in order to show some in good light. After this criticism, Mr. Bennet magically improves and the estate goes from 2k income to 4k in 5 years..

I feel like this sort of writing is not for me

I have read many of this author's stories and always found them to be enjoyable.

In this story we begin about 5 years before canon begins. Mr. Bennet's two university friends, a Mr. Livesay and Mr. Darcy visit and are appalled at Bennet's neglect in not only managing his estate but also managing his family. With his friends' reprimands Bennet makes changes...although Lydia does have to be sent away to school as she resists change. The estate does better and the daughters now have accomplishments and some dowries.

So Bingley leases Netherfield and brings Darcy with him. Darcy and Elizabeth do not have those major misunderstanding as in canon. However, there are times when Darcy has to "explain" himself. Elizabeth is quite open in her teasing of him and they share some sweet moments, holding hands and kisses.

A major thread here is plotting by Lord Matlock. We find his wife, who rarely stays with him, finding herself trying to uncover what her husband's reason is for, basically, blackmailing Darcy and threatening to expose Georgiana's episode with Wickham. Uncle wants Darcy to marry the daughter of a Viscount. Darcy refuses.

Threats are made of not only exposing G. but then there is a plan to also make Elizabeth "unmarriageable". Caroline Bingley and Wickham are villains here. Bingley's fate in this story differs from canon, as he never develops a backbone to thwart Caroline's manipulations and gossip and treatment of those she looks down on. He does bring his aunt to act as hostess of Netherfield at one point. (Be prepared for something very different in this part of the story.)

This story is long, with many details about interactions and conversations.

A interesting low angst story
Mr Bennet is friends George Darcy and Mr Livesay. Their friendship goes back to their studies at Cambridge.
5 years before the Pride and Prejudice timeline George Darcy, Mr Darcy and Mr Livesay visit Longbourn. Luckily they take Mr Bennet to task for his indolent way. Longbourns income has gone down one third, a 14 year old Elizabeth is doing a stewards work and a nine year old Lydia is already a shameless flirt. So Lydia is send of to school, a companion is hired for Kitty and Lydia and Longbourn income is raised, a dowries are established. Elizabeth still help with Longbourns care and are allowed to implement new farming techniques. Mr Bennet corresponds with Mr Darcy after his father passed away and he supports implementing modern farming at the estate.
So he is already very disposed to like Elizabeth before he arrives with Bingley at Netherfield. So much so that he arranges for Georgiana, Lady Matlock and Richard to join them soon his arrival. So Georgiana kan befriend the Bennet sisters.
The Earl of Matclock is really pressuring Darcy to marry a Duke’s daughter, he threatens to reveal the Ramsgate affair. So they are all trying to find out, why he is so desperate for the alliance.
I recommend you to dive into the story and solve the mysteries

Conflicts come from multiple sources. Will they converge to make a perfect storm that will destroy Darcy and Elizabeth’s chance for happiness? How will our dear couple outwit and overcome the schemes? I’m not going to tell you. No spoiler here.

Melissa Anne is one of my go-to authors. When she releases a book, I’m ready to check it out on KU. But she is also an author whose books I've purchased for my reread collection. Her stories are intriguing, clean, and sweet, and feature a lot of Darcy and Elizabeth fighting together against multiple antagonists.

In Sport for Our Neighbors, an event that occurred years earlier reshaped Darcy and the Bennet Family. Corresponding with his father's old friend from university teaches Darcy that no man is an island. It is okay to share his burdens with trusted allies. The Colonel, Mr. Bennet, and Miss Elizabeth are among those included within his inner circle. With their help, he can overcome wicked schemes coming from multiple sources. And… find his happily ever after while doing it.

Note: The author allowed me to read an advanced reader copy of Sport for Our Neighbors. The above is my honest opinion.

Excellent

More than a love story which greatly appeals to me. With so many characters this would make an interesting mini series expanding on the smuggling, underhanded deals etc. I like an atoning story of redeeming one’s faults. With Mr. Bennet taking stock of his failures his reformation had the ripple effect of changing the lives of so many others and even benefitting the town. One area I would have liked to know is what became of Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine. IMO, he should have been defrocked and she sent to an institution of sorts. Such toxic personalities should not be in places of power over the innocent. I enjoyed the book, the writing is well done and it held my interest.

a satisfying read.

This P&P variation is extremely low-angst, due to its premise (clearly, a good portion of the original story's angst is due to Mr Bennet's indolence & terrible parenting choices). There's a great deal of telling rather than showing, which only works because readers are obviously already familiar with the original story progression and characters, but overall it's quite a relief to have the "Mr Bennett you are an infuriating, sorry excuse for a man and you need some sense knocked into you" itch scratched. Not brilliantly written, and there are several typos (plus, for some reason, 'whilst' is never capitalised even though it is FREQUENTLY used at the start of a sentence?!!), but the turn of phrase is still quite good. Solid 4 stars.

Mr Bennet gets a wake-up call

4 1/2 stars rounded up and a solid 5 for the fantastic narration by Stevie Zimmerman!

In this newest Melissa Anne variation, we find out that Mr. Bennet and Darcy Sr, along with another, were close friends at university. Upon a visit five years prior to canon, his friends give Mr Bennet a very serious wake-up call on not only his families behavior but his neglect too. Once this settles in, Mr Bennet strives to improve. Does the family have it easy? Nope, as there are growing pains they all must deal with.

For the reader who loves lots of Darcy and Elizabeth together early in the story, this will fulfill your wish. They do have to contend with a few villains but they are dealt with. The ebook was good but the audiobook was better.

This story is a lovely variation of Pride and Prejudice that starts a few years before when Mr. Darcy Senior and other friends visit Mr. Bennet. That causes several changes and sets the ground for Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth to meet in a different way. As with most of Melissa Anne's variations, the villains are evil. I loved how Darcy didn't have to stand alone against them. This is a well written, clean, sweet, and low angst entertaining variation with an HEA. I love Melissa Anne's P&P variations and this is another keeper.
The author allowed me to read an advanced reader copy. The above is my own opinion.

Really enjoyed this charming full length variation. So cool that Darcy senior and Bennet knew each other from school, and thus Darcy Jr also knew them. These friends open Bennet's eyes and he makes changes that make him a better father and land owner.
We have the Earl trying to force Darcy into an unwanted marriage, to someone to young to even get married as well as Lady Catherine. But there are secrets behind every corner. Great follow thru. Our bad guys get some just rewards, including the ones who enable the the bad guys.
Very much enjoyed and was eager to turn every page.
Melissa Anne knows how to write em...Have enjoyed all of her variations.

Engaging sport

An involved tale that invited several readings, a mystery to unravel regarding an unexpected and particularly villainous villain, a delightful new character in Aunt Horatia Bingley; too bad she wasn’t directly involved with the Bingley family much earlier in their lives. The Bennet family evolves for the better after set downs from friends stir Mr Bennet to get out of his library and take charge of his family and estate. Darcy and Elizabeth come together in an interesting way while being themselves. I especially enjoyed Darcy’s plain speaking to Caroline who has the misfortune to be overheard more than once. The epilogue is especially satisfying.

Though the book is over 400 pages, it goes very quickly. Time is covered slowly. A day, an hour, later that day, all allow for continuity that begs one to continue reading.

Darcy and Elizabeth become friends through correspondence. (Nothing quite compromising, she was her father's scribe.) But the problems going on in the background made their 'friendship' progress to courtship and engagement very speedily. (Elizabeth's quick temper notwithstanding.)

All the nefarious characters are dealt with and justice is served without any of the innocents being hurt. Well written, edited, and paced.

A Fun Read

I had fun reading this variation. It focuses on different relationships than most. I liked the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bennet. In this variation, Mr. Darcy the elder is a friend to Mr. Bennet and motivates him to put more effort into his family and estate. The difference this makes to the Bennet family sets us up for a much different love story than the original. There is just the right amount of angst. The relationship between Lizzie and Jane is not developed in this variation and we do not see much of her other sisters either as they are all in the background. Enjoy!

Early intervention from dear friends

Mr Bennett's visit from old friends and their opinions of his lack of interest in his family and the vulgarity of Mrs Bennet and Lydia spark changes. Elizabeth has already taken control of the estate at 14, Fitzwilliam Darcy is intrigued by his description of her and consults his father as to what his wish would be for his future wife.

The connection between the families continue and an early understanding of each other and their willingness to face challenges together is endearing.

Loved it!

I always love it…..
……..when Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are friendly from the beginning! No insulting Elizabeth and therefore no Elizabeth receptive to Wickham’s manipulations.
As is the custom, readers who love villains are getting their due but for us weaker souls: their success is smaller than their wishes and imaginations had been.
A lovingly written story about Elizabeth and Darcy, just as I like it.
I got a copy in advance, thank you, Melissa Anne :-)

Another good story from Melissa Anne

I love Melissa Anne's works and this one is just the newest in the line.
What if Thomas Bennet knew Darcy's father and that friendship brought about a change in the way Bennet raised his daughters? This story looks into that with just the right amount of intrigue and, of course, romance. The addition of Bingley's aunt is just the perfect foil for a wicked Caroline.
A delightful read.
