A young couple dead. A haunting echo of one boy’s darkest day. A detective who can’t walk away—even if it costs him everything.
Detective Jake Cashen is called to a quiet cul-de-sac on the edge of Blackhand Hills, where a teenage girl has discovered the victims of a brutal murder-suicide. Newlyweds, shot in their own home. It looks open-and-shut. But something about the scene feels wrong—and Jake can’t shake the eerie parallels to his past.
The case dredges up memories of his own parents’ deaths under the same circumstances. His father snapped. His mother paid with her life. End of story. But as Jake digs deeper into the present-day investigation, he finds unsettling threads that lead straight to the tragedy that defined his childhood. And when he pulls the long-buried file from his parents’ case, he discovers details no one ever told him—details that make him question everything.
Jake’s relentless search for the truth in both cases, puts him at odds with his boss, his new partner, and the only family he has left. But someone out there knows the real story. And they’ll kill to keep it buried.
Their Deadly Truth is the heart-pounding ninth installment in the Detective Jake Cashen Crime Thriller Series by former police detective Declan James. Perfect for fans of Michael Connelly, C.J. Box, Robert Dugoni, and Lisa Regan.
I liked the case about the dead couple found and how it was solved. It was amazing and it solidifies my deep appreciation for Mr. James writing. He amazes me and I love the character Jake Casino and his family. But.at the same time I really wanted him to solve his.parents murder suicide. He got the box out and he found stuff but I didn't really feel the closure of his research. There has to be.more there were several statements I found left hanging. The basement door, the phone, the statement about Rob and his dad doing the right thing from his estranged grandmother, things in the note that didn't really prove.out to my liking. Lol not that I matter but I just wanted it to be 100% clear about his Father and Mother. I think its a closed issue but I so wanted a better outcome. My heart.is breaking. I was too.caught up in that to really.appreciate the crime that was being investigated. but this was still an intriguing novel.and I look.forward to the next one.
5 stars. An excellent read. The past and present collide for Detective Jake Cashen. His latest murder case brings up memories of Jake's own parents' deaths years ago. Pulling his parents' old case file brings haunting emotions. As he digs deeper into investigating each case, he uncovers troubling secrets. The author cleverly intertwines both cases. Kept me on edge right up to the end. Both cases bring plenty of surprising twists along the way. Can't wait for book 10.
Their Deadly Truth is the next Jake Cashen book and let’s just say it took a direction I never expected🙌
Jake and Birdie start to investigate a murder-suicide which opens up memories for Jake, similar to how his own parents were found roughly thirty years ago. I am usually pretty good at picking up nuances and figuring out what motive is and who the killer is. But I’m pretty shocked with how both of these shook out, but the story itself held me in its grips until I turned the very last page. So suspenseful and intriguing, just a masterpiece❣️ I can’t wait for the next book. I received an advanced copy and leave a voluntary review and highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fast paced stories and great characters.
Jake Cashen and company are back, and we finally get answers to long-lingering questions about what really happened to his parents. Their deaths are uncomfortably similar to a current crime, which makes the investigation extra hard for Jake.
I loved the character development in this book. Jake’s grandfather in particular really shined. I was especially happy for a cameo from a favorite who has been gone for a while, and Rob Arden, as always, set my teeth on edge. Final shout-out to Jake’s sister—both for how she was as a child and who she is now. She handled her grandmother like a champ, and moments between her and Jake are heartwarming.
The present-day crime looks like it will be impossible to solve. Jake (and Birdie) come through with some solid detective work. And what a gut-punch this time.
Can’t wait for the next installment! I don’t give five stars easily, but I’m happy to this time.
I started the series not that long ago and enjoyed every book just a bit more than the last. I was looking for a couple of new authors to read in the Mystery and/or crime thriller genre's. I stated many new authors, but only a few that I enjoyed reading farther than one book. Declan James is one of such authors and bought and read every book in this series and pre-ordered the one coming out next year. I have to admit, you are the first person I have read, where the stories are in and around the Ohio hill country. Very different and interesting. I highly recommend his books. His law enforcement career has given him a special insight into the workings of the bad guys, the office politics and the inner workings of solving the mysteries surrounding what seems like unsolvable crimes. The characters are well developed and the human story surrounding the characters is very good. Thanks for sharing your stories.
Det Jake Cashen is called to a crime scene that's eerily familiar. A husband and wife are dead in what looks like a murder/suicide. There is no evidence to suggest anyone else was there. It so reminds Jake of the death of his parents. He consistently has flashbacks to that time even though he wasn't there and it causes him to pull the case file.
As the investigation progresses, evidence suggests it was a murder but who was the target-the husband or the wife. Evidence is slim but someone always makes a mistake.
Both his boss and his partner are questioning if he can handle this case due to his background but he's determined to see it through and finally get answers for both cases.
A good mystery, the killer someone you wouldn't think and Jake finally gets the answers in the death of his parents. About a 3.75 for me.
This book was fabulous! From the first book to this one, we’ve come to see Jake grow as a good cop and a good man, despite the murders of his parents when he was just a little boy. This book delves into the circumstances surrounding the loss of his parents in the midst of trying to solve a similar crime. It was an excellent story!
This is the fourth book by this author I have read. I thought it was a bit slow compared to his other books in the series. I do like how the author captivates me as a reader of crime stories and police work. He brings the real true investigative process of a crime. As an older reader I wonder why as children become adults we still hold back the truth. I wasn’t sure of the ending but I loved how Jake and Gemma survived because of each other.
I wish Mr. James would write faster. I live the stories he puts out. This one didn't disappoint. Not only is this a mild thriller but the characters really.get into.your heart. I was pulled in from the beginning and as the story evolved it was very hard to put down. Now I have to wait again but the next.book promises to be another good one..
Another excellent entry in this well-written series. The mystery is intriguing, and the main characters continue to develop. The author makes the characters seem very real. I do recommend reading the books in order, as there are some continuing side-stories throughout.
I've read all the books in this series and have loved every one of them.. The characters are awesome and the story line is really spectacular ..Declan James is a real master..
