I didn’t mean to blurt out that the ridiculously handsome physical therapist at Sunny Shores Retirement Home is my fiancé. (Spoiler he's not.) But hey, at least my grandmother—the one recently diagnosed with dementia—is thrilled for me. Which makes lying to her feel so much worse, especially since my actual love life has sunk to the bottom of the lake.
My favorite memories are those magical summers at Grandma's cabin in Anchor Lake. The ones filled with cannonballs, sunburns, and my first crush. Well, guess who's now renting that very cabin and strutting around like a walking men’s fitness magazine cover? Yep, my childhood crush ( the hot physical therapist turned fake fiancé). Except now he comes with bonus muscles and designer glasses that make him look like Clark Kent's hotter cousin. And apparently, he's allergic to shirts. (I'm not complaining, but my ability to form coherent sentences sure is.)
Thanks to the town being packed tighter than a tin of sardines with tourists, we're now playing house in Grandma's cabin. He thinks his ADHD makes him challenging to live with, but after dating my ex (a two-timing toad), this guy's like a breath of fresh air – or maybe that's just the lake breeze talking.
As we investigate Grandma's mysterious health decline and uncover love letters that suggest she was quite the heartbreaker back in the day, I'm starting to will this fake engagement lead to real heartbreak, or is Anchor Lake about to work its romance magic one more time?
This standalone summer romantic comedy contains excessive shirtlessness, sunburned skin, awkward family dinners, impossibly bendy yoga poses, senior citizen conga lines, eardrum splitting karaoke, and the very real possibility that pretending to be in love might not be pretending after all. Anchored ends with a firework explosion of happily ever after love for all parties involved.
Marika is a USA Today bestselling author writing steamy RomComs to make your heart explode and bring a smile to your face. She lives by the beach and posts a delightful number of hot lifeguard pictures.
H/h meet when she summers at her grandmother's place and both have a crush on each other. They share their first kiss, after which he fumbles causing his glasses fall so he leaves. She had a massive crush on the guy and was hoping to kiss him again when she goes the next summer but instead finds him sucking face with ow. The same ow that bullied her all the time. She leaves disappointed and he never notices her. He then goes to date the ow for a long time before marrying her and divorcing her two years later.
H/h meet again years later when he's her grandma's nurse and she introduces him as her fiancé because her grandma has dementia and thinks they are engaged. Both play pretend but it soon turns into something real.
I'm well aware that they were kids (14 and 12) and the kiss didn't mean anything and they weren't together when he was making out with ow but it soured me all the same. I can't get my head over the fact that he chose ow and went as far as to marry her. And the worst of it was us being told, much later that ow still kept his last name even after the divorce. Even though she remarried and divorced again, she never changed it and it didn't bother him at all. Idk about you but that's just not it for me.
Macy Bechtol. Sadly, she’s actually Macy McGrath. She never changed her name back after we got divorced. Not even when she got remarried. Which I can’t really blame her. What a headache to have to change your last name and all connected documents 💀💀💀
Safety - H married ow and divorced her but since they all stay in the same town, she gets mentioned quite a lot. They also run into her once and she appears at the end which is what causes the third act breakup. He was married to her for 2 years and divorced for 8 (?). There's another ow at the hospital that's interested in him and is very obvious about it. While he isn't interested, i wish he took it hard to put her in place. h was engaged to a man for 2 years and he cheated on her.

I loved, loved Maple and Holt’s second chance, childhood crush romance of all the things. It just made me so happy to read about these two awkward real and relatable humans who are dealing with the messy parts of life while trying to overcome all their insecurities and negative self-talk. And oh the feelings I was feeling along with them. Maple is a pet therapist and former yoga teacher. After Gracie, her grandmother, falls, she decides to stay in the small town of Anchor Lake for the summer to try to determine how best to care for her. Holt is a physical therapist and secretly owns a number of residential care facilities including the one Maple’s grandmother lives at. Holt and Maple also were each other’s first kiss many years ago but haven’t seen each other since. When Gracie mistakes Holt for Maple’s fiancée, Maple leans into the lie. This begins the hilarious swoony journey to their HEA where fake quickly feels real and baggage unpacking is mandatory. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in or are worthy, like Holt and Maple. So I love when they finally see their truth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. And it was such a swoon worthy HEA. As always with this author, the story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and a captivating storyline.
I was honoured to receive an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review

Holt McGrath / Hunky Monkey
34yrs works at Anchor Lake's Sunny Shores Retirement Home as a physical therapist. He has been renting out the cabin that Maple's Grandma Gracie owns for 2 years. Holt is allergic to chocolate & owns a
dog called Mookie. Holt is always taking his glasses off and leaving them everywhere so a work colleague always keeps spare ones at hand. Holt has ADHD. His 1st kiss was with Maple at age 14 - he instantly remembers Maple when he hears her name. .... Oh and did I mention he's allergic to shirts? 🤤
Maple Thatcher/ Moonbeam
32yr old is a pet therapist - her mum, dad & brother thinks more about their jobs then they do about Grandma Gracie & Maple. 2 years ago she broke up with ex-fiance after she caught him cheating. Grandma says she can stay in the cabin. The 1st kiss she had was with Holt when she was 12. Maple prefers to sleep on the floor instead of a bed. She used to teach yoga but still does this to relax. However Maple does gives new meaning to yoga poses! 😉
Marika Ray has written another amazing story that you won't be able to put down. I can't recommend this story enough.
Maple is a young woman who is compassionate, thoughtful and very independent. Her Grandma Gracie means everything to her and when Gracie needed someone to help her, Maple didn’t think twice about running to her side. No one else had the “time” to care for the matriarch of the family. This is an all too common occurrence when it comes to caring for the elderly. Gracie loves her full life at the Sunny Shores Retirement Center, but many residents are dropped off by family members who never visit them again.
Gracie and Maple had a teary-eyed reunion which turned into all smiles when handsome Holt, the Physical Therapist, stopped by to check on his favorite patient. Maple and Holt shared a tender moment back when they were teenegers which neither of them had ever forgotten. Their second chance at friendship was just what the doctor ordered as they spent the summer caring for Gracie, and enjoying time at the lake while taking a trip down memory lane. Gracie enjoyed being with Maple, flirting with Holt, and taking her own walk back in time to when she was young and in love.
Gracie is my favorite character because she loved to have a good time, wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and embraced her future with happiness, positivity and love. Maple and Holt are a special couple who always put others first, aren’t afraid to shed a few tears, and vowed to make every day count. Together, they brought joy to Gracie’s world, made her smile, and showed her how much they both loved her. Summer romances come and go but the magic of Anchor Lake cast a spell on all who believed in love and it was a joy to see everyone so happy!
This is my favorite Marika Ray book, and there's a lot of them to compete with! I loved that there was not just Holt and Maple, but Gracie and Hank, it really kept me hooked. I loved how flawed Holt appeared, even though he really was so sweet, and I appreciated Maple being the black sheep of her family, even though she was successful, just not in a traditional sense. The back and forth of past and present worked perfectly to blend all the love stories together. This is a great summery book, and make sure you grab the bonus epilogue at the end.
Loved everything about this fantastic book! A new small town with quirky side characters and the hot main characters! Loved their chemistry! More please!!!!
Another gorgeous couple… or two… Absolutely loved this story which had a few laugh out loud moments, some steamy moments and even moments that made me cry. Holt and Maple have history and find themselves caught in an unexpected situation and living together for the summer while she is in town checking on her Grandma. This is a fake relationship, second chance story between two people that have been hurt in previous relationships and are afraid to try again. Can they let their defences down and let love in? With Maple’s no nonsense, straight talking grandma and her wacky but loveable friends from the retirement village there are some hilarious and fun moments. Trying to unravel a decades old mystery together Holt and Maple uncover something beautiful that adds another element to this gorgeous story. I loved it ♥️
4.5 stars - Heartfelt, humorous, and full of charm!
Anchored was such a well-rounded and satisfying read. Marika Ray has a gift for blending humor, romance, and serious themes with both care and heart.
I pictured Betty White as Grandma Gracie--equal parts sass and conspiring sweetness. The flashbacks were creatively woven, giving us glimpses of both Gracie and Maple as teens, adding rich layers to their characters and history.
Holt is the kind of quietly caring hero you can't help but root for--always looking out for others, all while silently battling his own demons. Maple's bond with animals was so touching and authentic to watch play out. Together, they create a story I couldn't get enough of!
Anchored by Marika Ray is her newest summer romantic comedy, and it was such a fun, light-hearted read!
✨ What can you expect? 🏡 Small-town charm 🏕️ Forced proximity in a cabin 💘 Childhood vacation crush to lovers ⚡ Opposites attract 💍 Fake fiancée 🚫 No third act breakup 🔍 Family mystery 👵 Senior citizen hijinks 🧠 ADHD representation

Synopsis: Maple didn’t mean to tell her grandma that Holt—the charming physical therapist with a Yorkie named Mookie—was her fiancé. But with her grandmother’s dementia diagnosis, the little lie felt like a kindness. When Holt, her childhood crush, rents Grandma’s old cabin and the town is too packed to find anywhere else to stay, Maple ends up sharing the space—and a fake engagement—with him. As their pretend relationship blurs into something more, Maple begins to wonder if love might be one of the secrets hiding in Anchor Lake.
My thoughts: I’ve been on a summer romance binge, and Anchored was such a quick and entertaining read. After her grandma’s diagnosis, Maple returns to Anchor Lake to help out, only to find herself roped into a fake engagement when Grandma mistakes Holt—her physical therapist—for Maple’s fiancé. Add in a double-booked cabin, and suddenly she’s living with her childhood crush.
Holt is a divorced physical therapist who owns several senior care facilities. He has ADHD, which some people in his life—including his ex and his mom—have dismissed or misunderstood. Living with Maple is a refreshing change for him. Years ago, they shared their first kiss as teens during a summer at the lake, and now that old spark is back… and burning brighter.
Maple’s family doesn’t take her seriously as a dog therapist, often minimizing her work. But with Holt, she feels seen, supported, and accepted for who she is. He listens, encourages her, and even joins her for yoga just because she loves it. The only one who ever truly believed in her was her grandma, Gracie—so her bond with Holt means even more.
And let’s talk about Holt—he’s a sweet, shirtless gym-loving guy with glasses and a Yorkie, and the chemistry between him and Maple is 🔥. When they finally cross the line, it’s intense. That man may be charming and easygoing in public, but in private? He’s possessive, dirty-talking, and knows exactly what he’s doing. And the way he calls her Moonbeam? Swoon. You can tell Maple lights up his whole world.
Their relationship felt real and heartwarming, with emotional depth and so much healing. I loved the family mystery subplot, especially how it tied into Grandma Gracie’s long-lost love—it brought everything full circle in the most tender way.
If you’re looking for a cute, spicy summer romance filled with charm, senior shenanigans, a protective MMC who calls his girl Moonbeam, and an HEA that wraps around your heart, Anchored belongs on your TBR! 💛🌙
This was such a happy, refreshing read—Marika Ray proves once again why she’s the superstar of rom-coms!
There’s a perfect blend of conflict and drama, but what makes it stand out is how love and deep emotion drive every challenge. This is a second-chance romance done right—not because the characters were torn apart by heartbreak, but because their first love remained untouched, a lingering dream of what could have been.
Maple and Holt’s mutual summer crush held all the frisson of possibility, and when fate (or rather, Maple’s Gran’s unexpected fall) brings them back together, it’s not just about rekindling romance—it’s about self-acceptance, growth, and finding where they truly belong.
Maple must embrace her quirks and yoga sensibilities in a career-driven family, while Holt, navigating life with ADHD, learns that success isn’t about fitting a mold—it’s about knowing your worth.
With all the signatures that make Marika Ray a must-buy for me—sparkling dialogue, delightfully flawed characters, and passionate open-door romance—this book is a pure delight. And with a double romance to unravel, it’s the kind of story that keeps you turning pages long past bedtime, just to stay a little longer in Anchor Lake
The love that Maple received from her grandmother was unconditional and without judgement. The combination of her grandmother’s fall as well as her dementia has Maple wanting to be close to her so she decides to spend some time with her. That decision is about to become a lot more complicated when her grandmother believes she is engaged to Holt, her grandmother’s physical therapist, and her first crush when she was a teenager.
Holt is a successful businessman who believes that his ADHD impacts all his relationships including his divorce. He has never forgotten Maple or the kiss they shared so when she needs a place to stay it seems like the perfect solution for her to stay with him especially since they are supposed to be engaged. Let the fun begin!
Holt and Maple were perfect for each other as they have always put other people first and they deserve to have someone put them first as well. Romance, emotion and humor all combine into an entertaining story.
• Fake engagement with her grandma’s physical therapist • Forced proximity in the cabin on Anchor Lake • Opposites attract • Childhood vacation crush to lovers • No third act breakup • Family mystery solved
Holt and Maple met as teenagers during the time Maple spent her summers in Anchor Lake visiting her Grandma Gracie. It was during one of these summers that they both experienced their first kiss with each other.
Several years later, after being contacted by her Grandma’s doctor regarding concerns related to her health, Maple finds herself back in Anchor Lake.
Upon her return, Maple is surprised to learn that not only is Holt her Grandma’s physical therapist at the retirement home where she now resides, but he is also renting Gracie’s cottage where Maple was planning on staying.
When Grandma Gracie confuses Holt as Maple’s fiancé, they do not correct her based on her failing memory and do not want to upset her. Holt agrees to help Maple by keeping up the charade. In addition to being forced to share the cottage due to the lack of any other options, seeing as it is the peak of tourist season, and their “fake” relationship, Holt and Maple find themselves investigating a mystery involving Grandma Gracie and an unknown man from her youth.
This book is one of the best feel-good books I have read in a long time. It deals with the feelings of being less than by both main characters and perfectly shows how acceptance by someone else can make you feel seen and change your impression of yourself. It is packed with love, laugh-out-loud moments, amazing chemistry, mystery, and a well-deserved HEA.
I highly recommend it to any reader looking for a perfect beach read or just an overall heartwarming story.
Anchored is the newest release by author Marika Ray. This is a wonderful story about family, friendship, second chances and love. Marika Ray perfectly weaves together the threads throughout the story and gives us readers a beautiful tapestry in the end.
Maple may be the black sheep of the family, but when she gets a call regarding her Grandma Gracie, she doesn't hesitate to go back to Anchor Lake to help her. Her favorite memories took place at Anchor Lake and her grandma's cabin. One of those memories is of her first childhood crush...the same man that just happens to be Grandma Gracie's physical therapist at Sunny Shores Retirement Home!
Holt should have known that seeing Maple (his childhood crush) would stir up unresolved feelings from long ago. Now, on top of that, Grandma Gracie mistakes him for Maple's fiance! Holt decides to play along with the lie...but for how long? Can a fake relationship turn into a real one?
The story that unfolds is filled with laughter, some tears, family & friendship, and of course, love. Both Holt and Maple have been burned in the past, and they still carry that baggage with them. What starts out as a lie slowly becomes so much more...if they are both willing to take that chance. The chemistry is definitely there...but are the feelings there too?
I honestly cannot recommend this book enough. Anchored has become one of my favorite stories by Marika Ray.
I received an ARC from the author. My views are my own and are in no way influenced by anyone else.
If you’re looking for a steamy romance perfect for your reading pleasure, you won’t be disappointed with Anchored. Maple and Holt met years ago and had crushes on each other, but it didn’t go anywhere. Now, they’re both grown up and are back in Anchor Lake for the summer. It’s a busy time for the small town, so Maple has to share Grandma Gracie’s cabin with Holt, which he’s renting. Maple loves Grandma Gracie and decides to spend the summer in town, while they find out about her health issues. Grandma Gracie lives at the Sunny Shores Retirement Home, where Holt is a physical therapist besides owning it. Gracie and her friends are avid readers and give Holt a stack of books, in which Gracie’s journal is included. Gracie was a little wild back in the day. Maple learns about Hank, Gracie’s first love from reading the journal, and decides to try to find him. So, besides the budding relationship between Maple and Holt, we may get a secondary romance between Gracie and Hank. I’m not going to leave any spoilers, but I will say, I’m so glad that Maple had Gracie while growing up because her family is lacking. Grab your copy and get ready to fall for these characters and the small town of Anchor Lake.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I just loved Maple as well as Holt, I thought the moment they had years earlier was super sweet especially when you get to hear both sides along with how Maple has such a wonderful relationship with her Grandmother the sneaky lady she is. Seeing Holt and Maple get to really know each other and them working together to unravel the mystery of Grandma's younger years which turns out to uncover some surprises was wonderful.
4.5 ⭐️ This rom com, fake engagement, forced proximity romance is so good. Loved loved the characters. I also love the premise of how everything began for these characters. It all starts with a fake relationship but eventually becomes more. There is plenty of sworn worthy moments. And there's even moments that will have you laughing out loud. It's a well-written story with engaging dialogue. It also has strong growth within the characters. It's an amazing story. I really enjoyed it.
Anchored is a stand alone story. I liked that you learned about Maple's grandmother's past throughout the story in addition to the relationship between Holt and Maple. It was a cute story and a nice summer read.
I received a copy of this book at my request (and read in KU), and the opinions here are my own.
Maple and Holt !! OMG !!! The way these two hooked me so completely , the the way their story pulled at all my heartstrings and had me laughing out loud , smiling like crazy even sobbing like a baby , yelling outta pure frustration and kept me cheering so freaking hard . Well I honestly do not think there really are any perfect words to express how in love with this story I fell .second chances, childhood crushes , all the angst and the humor and the witty banter you could ever want . Not to mention the off the charts chemistry, the family and friendships and the unexpected surprises. This was just such a fun read filled with so many wonderfully written characters. I seriously could not get enough .
Another fantastic read from Marika! This story is filled with laughs, tender moments and an amazing HEA. Gracie and Holt are so cute and so good together. I love their banter, chemistry and overall dialogue. This book is really sweet…you will laugh , swoon and fall in love with these two and all the other characters.
“you finally trusted yourself, came home, and found your soulmate.”
They were each other’s first kiss when they were barely teens one summer. Years later they find each other again back in Anchor Lake fake engaged.
Maple is visiting her Grandma Gracie after a fall and a dementia diagnosis when she accidentally said she was engaged to Holt. Holt was her childhood crush and first kiss. Holt didn’t hesitate helping out Maple and so he went along with it. They find themselves in close proximity sharing Grandma Gracie cabin. They were each other’s first kiss for a reason, the attraction is definitely still there. But not only is Maple only there for summer, she’s also hesitant to start anything with Holt especially after her cheating ex. Can this summer love survive or would it lead to more heartbreak?
A fun summer romcom with a bendy yoga instructor and a physical therapist who hates wearing a shirt. These two are making me rethink about getting into yoga 😉 😜. But there’s so much more to Maple and Holt, I love how they genuinely like each other and support each other no matter what especially when some of their own family members just don’t quite understand. They may have started a fake relationship but these two are the real deal!
Maple has kind of lost her way – she makes a good living but never measures up to her family’s expectations, has put up with a loser of an ex for far too long, and has lost touch with her Grandma Gracie out of shame. When Gracie starts experiencing health problems, Maple is the only one in her family who’s willing to go help out. And lucky for her, her soft heart wins the day! Holt has a successful business empire and a failed marriage that’s left him demoralized at his prospects for being relationship material. When Maple’s accidental slip has them playing fake fiancé and then living together, he keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop. Yet he’s really just about perfect – thoughtful, sweet, amazing with his seniors, and hot as the dickens. Watching the two of try to fool everyone (but mostly fool themselves) is really cute, but there’s no doubt the star of the show is Gracie. Old diary entries prove Gracie had a wild side in her youth, and provide some mystery in the here and now. Plus, she gets to show the youngsters how it’s done. What a fantastic book about three people who belong together and form just the family they all deserve.
Wonderful Read! This was a wonderfully crafted read that I was engaged in from the first to the end! This story is about second chances, but it is also so much more than that! I highly recommend this one! To the author, keep writing and I will keep reading!
Can a pretend fiancé become a real one? Maple reconnects with her childhood love, Holt, when she goes to visit her grandmother, Gracie. This is such a fun read...full of laughter and heartwarming entertainment. Welcome to small town where everyone knows your business.
Great story of reconnecting with family and friends. When life gives you second chances you take them. Holt and Maple are the cutest and when their fake engagement turns into something special they are all in. Such a cute story
Anchored is a perfect summery rom-com from Marika Ray!
This book is a complete stand alone from Marika's other books, but is still filled with laugh out loud banter, silly circumstances and of course some fabulous moments of heat. I adore both Maple and Holt, I found both of these characters to be extremely relatable with the heavy weights on their shoulders of not living up to the expectations of other people while just trying to live a life that makes them happy. The way that Marika added Holt's ADHD and the many personality quirks that come along with that diagnosis at times just resonated with me and my very own ADHD husband.
The past history with these two was such a fun piece to the story- and I love how it kind of melded into the second chance idea, that you may have met the right person but it just wasn't the right time. Both Holt and Maple had to have those other life experiences and heartbreaks that helped shape who there were today for them to be in the right place to see what was right in front of them. Grandma Gracie was such a huge part for both Maple and Holt and her sly meddling worked out in the best way! I adore the little twist with Hank and the whole feel of the entire story. It was like even though there are moments of insecurity and hesitation the instant ease that these characters had and how it wasn't this drawn out combination of things left unsaid made this story feel like this relaxing oasis in the midst of real life. Thank you Marika for these two!!
I love a damaged soul, and this one had it in spades. Aspen was the perfect woman for Rick, and her brother knew it. I loved how they came together. And even though the author’s signature humor was evident, it was more solemn due to the theme of the book.
