Deadly power, a destiny revealed, and a burning desire for revenge.
When Morgana arrived in Ruadán's Port, she was innocent and naive. Now? She carries ancient power within her and a thirst for revenge. Morgana trains with Louisa and Aranare while Skye faces battles of her own.
As darkness grows in the Atlantic, Morgana journeys to the Kingdom of Thálassa for answers tied to the ancient prophecy.
The Thálassians value pleasure above all things, and even war is an excuse to revel. But will Morgana be able to keep her wits about her surrounded by such sensuous delights?
Secrets, lies, seduction . . . And above all things, love.

4.5 stars!!(Rounded up to 5) THANK YOU NETGALLEY AND J. STŘELOU FOR THE ARC 🩵🐚🪸🌊🌅🦭 Holy guacamole. What a bomb a$$ sequel to the first book. Unfortunately, I found Skye so insufferable that at times, it made it hard for me to get through her chapters. Same with Morgana… I wish that Morgana would’ve just communicated more. It was so frustrating how much she would assume. Once she had a thought in her head, it was fact. It just bugged me that she would never talk to Finn and let him speak for himself. It seems like it kind of added to the story but it just bugged me at times how immature both Skye and Morgana were.
This book was an absolute ride from start to finish. The expansion of the ocean world was breathtaking. Every detail felt purposeful, vivid, and beautifully woven into the story. It didn’t just feel like background setting; it felt alive, and it pulled me in completely. What really stood out to me was the depth this installment brought. There was so much more complexity in the worldbuilding, the characters, and even the emotional layers of the story. This wasn’t just surface-level storytelling, it went deeper and added weight to everything that unfolded. Finn was the perfect male main character. He carried both strength and vulnerability in a way that made him incredibly compelling, and every moment he was on the page felt intentional. He’s definitely a highlight of the book for me. And then that ending… THAT TWIST. I’m still reeling. It was the kind of twist that leaves you staring at the page in shock, and now I feel like a rabid animal waiting for the next book to come out. The setup for what’s to come is just too good, and I know I’ll be thinking about it until I get my hands on the next one.
If you like The Little Mermaid and/or Pirates of the Caribbean…this series is for you! Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of those two things, if you like immersive world building and a fun story, you HAVE to pick this up. Well done, Julia!!!👏🏼
[I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author. This review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion]
THE WHAT This story follows Morgana and Skye as they search for a prophecy that could save the from Taranis, who is trying to rule the ocean with his Drowned soldiers. Simultaneously, they are in a race against the clock to prevent a disease from spreading through the ocean and destroying its people. They both struggle with the magic they were given, learning how to accept and control it in moments where it threatens to overtake them.
THE VIBE Slow burn, enemies to lovers, merman x mermaid, forced proximity, underwater courts, kings x queens, disease, family betrayals.
THE HOW The story is told through multiple POV’s which I don’t mind usually, however the characters lacked personal distinction which pulled me from the story and impacted pacing.
THE HIT The world building really stands out. The author beautifully writes the different areas of the ocean and I could almost see the vivid colours, vast ecosystem, and different species. This was really well done. I also want to say that the book itself is absolutely stunning!
THE MISS The pacing dragged in parts and some sentences felt repetitive, which pulled me out of the story. I also found some of the characters frustrating, especially those who could have used more growth or consistency.
THE REC: This wasn’t a favorite for me, but it has a lot to offer. If you enjoy slow, atmospheric fantasy with strong world building and don’t mind a heavier, pace, this might work better for you.
As I always say, just because something isn’t for me, doesn’t mean it isn’t for someone else!
THE OVERALL: Overall, I would rate this book as follows:
Sea of Pleasure and Pain picks up right where Sea of Evil and Desire left off — and within just a couple of chapters, I felt fully caught up and immersed again.
The pacing in this book is fantastic, barely letting up for a moment. This instalment leans more into the world-building: the creation of the Kingdom of the Deep, the realms and their politics, the origins of the prophecy, and the heartbreaks that have shaped its course.
Morgana’s journey feels far less lonely this time, with Edward and Skye at her side. Admittedly, Skye’s stubborn streak tested my patience at times, but by the end, she’d won me over. And Edward? I’m officially adopting him as my gay bestie.
There’s a larger cast in this book, but thanks to Strelou’s sharp characterisation, it’s easy to keep track of who’s who and what roles they play.
The relationship between Morgana and Finn had me completely tangled in emotions — happy, sad, angry, confused, all at once. Whatever they were feeling, it was intense.
So much happens in this book, yet it never feels overwhelming. Strelou proves herself a mastermind of plot, pacing, world-building, and the art of a jaw-dropping twist — because this one ends on an absolute doozy!
I’m genuinely in awe that she managed to release this book so soon after book one, and with such polish and power. I’ll be waiting (impatiently!) and very eagerly for book three.
Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that was just released called, Sea of Pleasure and Pain. This story takes place after the events of book 1 (Sea of Evil and Desire) and now Morgana is trying to come to terms with her new reality and everything that's happened. She feels like she can't trust Finn, but she still cares about him. Her friend Skye from the last book is a more prominent character in this book, with her own backstory weaving into the secrets of the sea. These two friends lean on each other while navigating their new lives, their powers, their love lives, all while searching for answers. I really enjoyed getting chapters from both Morgana and Skye, as well as other characters throughout the story. These books dive so deep into folklore compared to other "mermaid books" the author does an amazing job with it and it makes these books so intriguing and captivating! I really enjoyed this story! 💜📚
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and Netgalley for this ARC of Sea of Pleasure and Pain, in exchange for an honest review.
Gosh, I was not prepared for the ending of SoP&P. The secrets and lies that came out...
Sea of Pleasure & Pain picks up where Sea of Evil & Desire left off, with a continuation of the plot and character growth after a few personal revelations. In Sea of Evil & Desire, there is a lot of explanations and world building for the reader to be able to understand the Kingdom of the Deep. Therefore, during Sea of Pleasure & Pain, now that we understand the conflict between the species, the understanding of what Drowned, and Mer were, we were able to focus on the plot and the characters more. I felt like Morgana's character really grew, especially as she was struggling with her own feelings towards other characters and discovering where their true loyalties lay. I really loved learning more about Skye and Aranare, and how their stories intertwined with Morgana and Finn's. I feel like Skye's character is one of the characters I really enjoyed reading from, as she isn't the "main character" and is seeing everything through a different perspective to those who were aware of the Kingdom of the Deep. She was a very relatable character to the reader as she deals with issues that humans deal within our own world, such as toxic relationships and DV. This created a better connection for the reader with the fictional world. Edward is still my favourite character, he is unique, funny and a bit quirky, yet he is such a "breath of fresh air" despite being drowned, compared to the more serious main characters. Throughout Sea of Pleasure & Pain, we discover more of the world beneath the waves and travel to the Kingdom of Thalassa. We meet more Mer who aren't afraid to allow desire and lust into their day. The plot evolution is wickedly brilliant, with crumbs that were sprinkled in book 1 now making sense in 2. I have no idea how book 3 will finish, but I have no doubt it'll be just a brilliant as the first two. I binge read the last 50% in half a day, so can confirm, this book will hook you and drag you deep into the world beneath the waves.
Sea of Pleasure and Pain is the second book in The Deep Saga, and is coming through with a lot more darkness to the depths than its predecessor, Sea of Evil and Desire.
We’ve got extra POV characters, which I particularly enjoyed. Skye was an unexpected POV, but I truly loved every moment of her perspective, even if my heart hurt for her. She’s an incredibly strong woman, and I can’t wait to see more of her story and powers as the series continues. With the introduction of Skye’s story, we have some incredible, unique concepts which I won’t spoil, but they really hit the spot for me.
Finn and Morgana are still doing a bit of push and pull with their feelings, which are infinitely more complex after the first book. The tension has increased, and with every few chapters, I felt like I was going insane because I didn’t know which way it was going to go 😂
This was a book very rich in lore, where we learn SO MUCH about the gods, prophecy, history, underwater kingdoms, and even priestesses. I think this is a good setup for the next book, which is going to be very action-focused, I feel.
The last couple of chapters sent me spiralling in the same way as book one, which I feel is a nice nod to J. Strelou’s writing style.
Overall, this book is what I would call a dark mer fantasy, rich in lore. It’s not a cosy read, but it is a beautiful one, with very vivid depictions of the beauty of the ocean and all its glory.
(Thank you to Julia for the ARC — she’s the only author whose street team I’m on and for good reason.)
Sea of Pleasure and Pain is exactly why I keep showing up for Julia’s books every time. Her writing is lush, immersive and addictive in that way where you tell yourself one more chapter… and suddenly it’s 2 a.m.
This second book of The Deep Saga dives even further into the oceanic worldbuilding—full of twists and turns, underwater political intrigue, secrets and seductions. It’s a fantasy romance with a dark edge, perfect for anyone who loves sea mythology, morally gray characters and the kind of tension that coils slowly before striking.
Following Morgana’s evolution is a thrill. She’s no longer the innocent girl we met at the beginning; she’s powerful, driven and wrestling with forces far bigger than herself. The journey to the Kingdom of Thálassa is decadent, dangerous and dripping with atmosphere.
Julia paints these underwater kingdoms with such vivid detail that you feel the currents, the rituals, the desire and the looming threat pressing in from all sides. And the vibes?
Think Pirates of the Caribbean meets Indiana Jones, but make it sensual, magical, and emotionally high-stakes. The spice is there, the darker themes give weight to the narrative and the adventure element keeps the pace sharp and exciting.
Tropes you'll love: 🌶️ Monster Romance (medium spice) 🖤 Morally Gray Characters 😠 Forced Proximity ✨ Found Family 💙 Mer, Selkies, Sirens, Drowned
If you’re an ocean lover, a mythic-creature enthusiast, or someone who wants a fantasy romance series that feels both fresh and cinematic, mark your calendars. December 6th — you don’t want to miss this one. 📌
The tides rose for book two… and DAMN, it did not disappoint. You could dive in without reading the book one and still catch the current, but the payoff for returning readers? Immaculate.
This interconnected standalone drags you straight beneath the surface into a brewing war between the Selkies, Sirens, Mer, and the Drowned. Where every alliance is as fragile as sea glass and every secret feels heavy enough to sink you. And let’s talk about those new POVs, because yes, I was absolutely feral for them.
We get a tighter focus on two side characters from book one (Skye and Aranare), and watching their arcs twist through betrayal, longing, and all that dark ocean magic (and I do mean pressure Magic 😮💨) made the whole thing impossible to put down.
Střelou somehow took a character I tolerated before and made me obsessed with them here. That’s talent. That’s emotional whiplash. That’s why I read her work 🙏
If you crave mermaid myths turned dangerous, siren songs that seduce and destroy, selkie deals dripping with deceit, and drowned ones who refuse to stay dead…THIS one’s your next fix. It’s mystery, betrayal, and saltwater seduction all in one breathtaking plunge.
But be warned even the deep ocean has cliffs to fall off of …
“Any creature who does anything less than worship you deserves to become dust.”
I enjoyed the first book, but this one exceeded my expectations! Every question I had about the world-building and magic system in the first book was answered in this one. Moreover, I loved that different myths, legends, and even real-world history (mixed with fiction) were sprinkled throughout the story.
I enjoyed the relationship between Finn and Morgana from the start, and it remained just as lovely, but the side characters really shone in this book. I loved the different POVs and enjoyed getting to know some of the other characters. The banter between them made me giggle, but there was also depth to their characters.
The plot twist at the end was shocking but still well planned, and the cliffhanger made me very excited for the next book!
This jumps right back into the mysterious and tense atmosphere, and vast ocean worldbuilding and intrigue. It's immersive and complex, and the characters are put through a lot, testing their bravery, strength and vulnerabilities. The key themes of duty, conflict, desire, and loyalties shine through, alongside the growth of characters, including Morgana's evolution and determination, Finn's protection and complexity, and Edward's supportiveness. I loved the additional pov's, and learning more about the world and lore which is building up in significance. There were darker themes explored, and I enjoyed all the adventure, intrigue, romance and banter. It has the beauty of the little mermaid, with the action and high stakes of pirates of the Caribbean, with a great balance of love and sacrifice, and a dramatic ending
This is absolutely epic and crushing second book in The Deep Saga! The series got an explosion of world building and character exposition in this book. With surprise side character POVs and a twist that will crush you!
All these little Easter eggs from the first book (some that you don’t even think are eggs!) come into play!
Some characters, who shall remain nameless, *cough* Finn *cough* I wanted to kick in the pants and others I just wanted to kick period 😂 I’ll keep that name actually secret but if you’ve read the first book… you can probably think of a few 🫣
But also I want an Edward book a novella even! I’m not picky!
This series still has my heart!!!! I loved ‘Sea of Evil & Desire’ so much & I was scared I wouldn’t love #2 as much, but dang!!!! I absolutely loveddddd #2!! Twists & turns, spice & lies, secrets & undoings!! What a brilliant book! What I love most, and what particularly drew me from book #1 which continues in book #2 is the world building. The author has such a VIVID way of bringing this underwater world to life & that sold it to me!
It took me a long time to get through this one because it was such a rough read. The characters are very one dimensional so I was never able to bring myself to care about what happens to them. The book has multiple POVs but sadly every character has the same voice so it’d be impossible to know who is who if it weren’t for the name of the POV at the start of the chapter. Speaking of multiple POVs, I found Sky’s to be absolutely unbearable. Her entire plot line was extremely forced and it all fell so flat. The characters in this book have an extreme lack of personality. In terms of the writing; there were a lot of parts that were very repetitive, unnecessary, failed in descriptions, paced strangely, and there were also quite a few grammatical errors as well. I’m not an expert on grammar by any means as you can tell by this review however the grammar issues that stood out to me lately affected the reading like a lack of commas for example that change the meaning of the sentence (ex; let’s eat grandma vs let’s eat, grandma).
I love the idea for this book and the premise, plus I tore through the first one and even recommended it to a few people, but this book fell so extremely flat. I will not be recommending it anymore. I truly believe in indie authors and I don’t want this author to give up, but my advice would be: -avoid multiple POVs until you can differentiate voices -take more time developing personalities -ease into plots, don’t force it
This was an OK second book in the series. It does need some cleaning up. I’m usually not a big fan of multiple POVs—especially when there are more than two—but the author did a great job making each perspective distinct and unique. That said, toward the end of the book, the constant switching became annoying, and at least two of the POVs started to feel tedious and repetitive.
This book is a lot slower than the first and leans heavily into fluff. I definitely preferred the first book. There are tons of flashbacks explaining the history of the Sea Kingdoms, but much of it felt unnecessary. The same hostilities and fights from book one were recycled here, which made the story feel repetitive and draining.
Skye’s lack of growth—especially in her relationship with Parker—was frustrating. Her character arc felt completely stalled.
By the end, the book felt like a slog. I was bored, had to push myself to finish, and honestly came very close to DNFing. It just wouldn’t GET TO THE POINT.
Morgana does not have it easy. Training isn't going well, however, there is an urgency to get into the deep blue sea. Along with her friend, Skye, who has revealed something unexpectedly about herself, dive into the ocean to find a prophecy to stop an evil being from taking over the ocean.
In her seal suit, Morgana enters the Kingdom of Thálassa. She encounters not only a need for revenge, but the one person she doesn't know if she can trust and most certainly loves, the merman and prince, Finn. Will their journey together reveal some hidden secrets of the past?
At the same time, Skye is dealing with her own abilities, powers, and uncertain feelings. Will she come to terms with who she is, and can she use her powers for something positive?
As if matters weren't dark enough, there is a dark, monstrous creature that needs to be stopped before he takes over everything and everyone in the ocean.
I really enjoyed the first installment of this series, so I was excited to continue the story with Morgana and Finn in its sequel! One of my favorite aspects of this book and series is the creativity of having its main plot under the sea. It's an interesting perspective as I have not read many books that feature main characters living under the water. I love visualizing how each half-human creature is living in the water and attempting to picture the landscape as well.
This sequel is told through multiple perspectives - Morgana, Skye, and Aranare, which was an interesting combination. Last book, I felt connected to Morgana and Finn, the characters whose perspectives were shared. However, I did not feel much, if any, connection with Skye or Aranare. In fact, there was a point when I didn't actually want to read Skye's perspective when it seemed all she wanted to was have sexual intercourse/interactions with a merman. It was something she did to block out some strong emotions and a tragic event that happened to her, however, that didn't make it any more pleasant. I also became frustrated with Morgana when all she needed to do was ask one question so she wasn't so upset with Finn, however, she didn't and it dragged on for far too long. I also missed reading Finn's perspective, which wasn't present for most the book.
As far as the plot is concerned, there were moments of excitement and moments that I had difficulties in wanting to skim over. I loved the sense of urgency and suspense when the plot was focused on the prophecy and the impending war that is coming. However, the amount and focus on having sex with merman was just too much. It took away from the plot more than added to it. Then, of course, all the trust issues and lying that occurs seems immature and was not very pleasant to read.
Themes of trust, honesty, deception, love, relationships, destiny, communication and friendship are built into this novel. The deception/lies I did not appreciate within the main couple of the story. I understand that not all relationships are perfect and sometimes white lies happen, but it's not necessarily something that I would like to read about. In addition, the lies that were told and the lack of basic communication just pulled me away from the story.
Content warning: As mentioned previously, there are several sexual scenes in this book, and some torture/abuse scenes.
Overall, the overarching plot is a creative one and love the ocean setting, however, the execution seemed a bit too juvenile. I give "Sea of Pleasure and Pain" 3 out of 5 stars. For those who do not mind a romantasy where deception and lack of communication is present in its flawed characters will enjoy this read. I also believe those who do not mind an ocean-based plot and sexual scenes would enjoy this one too.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for giving me the opportunity to read "Sea of Pleasure and Pain". All opinions are my own.
This book is the kind of sequel that swirls in like a dark, glittering current: seductive enough to pull you under, turbulent enough to make you wonder if you should have worn emotional floaties. It expands the mythology, deepens the danger, and absolutely revels in its own sensuous atmosphere. And while the story’s ambition is admirable, it occasionally meanders like a siren deciding whether she wants to sing or sulk. Our FMC, Morgana, returns stronger, stranger, and significantly more powerful after inheriting the Selkie goddess magic that now thrums beneath her skin. She’s thoughtful, wary, and forever toeing that knife’s edge between destiny and desire. Where book one gave us a fledgling, book two gives us a woman stepping fully, and sometimes reluctantly, into myth. Our MMC is Finn, the merman prince whose return carries more than just waves. Finn is magnetic, dangerous, morally grey, and deeply wrapped up in the politics, seduction, and secrets of the underwater realm. Their dynamic, the pull between Morgana’s longing and Finn’s ambiguities, drives much of the book’s tension, sensuality, and conflict. In this installment, Morgana must confront an ancient prophecy awakening beneath the waves, one tied intimately to her newfound power and the rising threat across the Atlantic. Her quest draws her, into the decadent and dangerous underwater kingdom of Thálassa, where pleasure is religion, politics are bloodsport, and secrets cling like seafoam. Within Thálassa’s seductive halls, Morgana faces the collision of desire and duty. The sensuality of the Mer culture isn’t just backdrop; it shapes alliances, tests trust, and forces her to reckon with what she’s willing to give up, or take, when the ocean threatens to consume her identity. Her dynamic with Finn deepens, darkens, and occasionally derails her better judgment, while the presence of other influential men introduces power struggles and emotional whiplash. The plot thrives on atmosphere: lush, sultry, and steeped in mythic stakes. But the pacing sometimes drifts. The sensual scenes masterfully simmer, yet they occasionally overshadow momentum just when the danger tightens. Some twists feel more like genre obligations than organic revelations. Still, the emotional core, Morgana’s evolution and her fraught connections with Finn, keeps the story afloat even when the tides get inconsistent. As a sequel, Sea of Pleasure and Pain delivers exactly what some fans crave: darker stakes, deeper magic, political intrigue, and a messy, pulsing romance between the main characters. Morgana remains the anchor grounding all the chaos; her inner turmoil and grit make the decadence meaningful. Finn keeps you wary, uncertain, and unwillingly captivated. I give it three stars because while the world-building is rich and the sensual tension is strong, the uneven pacing and reliance on familiar tropes undercut some of its loftier ambitions. It’s a worthwhile read if you’re in the mood for deep-sea fantasy, morally grey romance, and storm-tossed passion, but go in ready for both magic and mess.
Once innocent and naïve, Morgana has transformed into a powerful force driven by vengeance. As she trains alongside Louisa and Aranare, and Skye faces her own challenges, darkness continues to spread across the Atlantic. Seeking answers to an ancient prophecy, Morgana travels to the hedonistic Kingdom of Thálassa, where pleasure and deception rule. Surrounded by temptation and buried truths, she must hold her strength and clarity to uncover the secrets that could change everything, about her destiny, her power, and her heart
I really enjoy being in this world. The worldbuilding in this series is so rich and wonderful, and this book just made me love it even more. I especially liked that we got so many different POVs this time. I always appreciate seeing multiple perspectives, and it added so much depth to the story
There was a lot more worldbuilding in this book, and getting to learn more about the history, the gods, and everything happening behind the scenes was such a treat. We also meet a whole range of new characters, and I genuinely enjoyed all of them. They were such great additions to the storyline, and learning more about the gods especially was so exciting
The ending was absolutely insane. I was freaking out wondering what was going to happen, and I could not put the book down. I definitely need book 3 now because I am desperate to see where everything goes next. There were quite a few twists and turns I didn’t see coming, which really added to the suspense and kept me fully hooked
I loved that we got to see more of Skye. I feel so much for her, and everything she’s been through breaks my heart. She’s such an interesting character, and I’m really glad she had more page time. I feel like she gets stronger every book, and I’m so happy about her growth
Morgana was also incredible to read. She’s such a determined woman, and I loved her POVs. The way she fights for what she believes in and how fiercely she loves the people close to her makes her such a strong FMC. She really stands up for herself, and I admire that so much. I also hope we see more of her family in book 3. I really like her grandfather, and I think he’s a very cool and compelling character
Finn, as usual, gave me emotional whiplash. He’s such a conflicting character, but in the best way. The multiple POVs make his story even more interesting and layered, and I think that complexity really pays off
Edward might honestly be my favourite side character. He is hilarious, protective, caring, and so supportive of Morgana. He’s such a kind and lovely presence in the story, and I would not be mad at all if he ever got a book of his own
And finally, I have to say, the cover of this book is absolutely stunning. The purple is gorgeous and adds so much to the aesthetic of the series. These books are truly beautiful inside and out
A powerful and emotionally rich sequel that deepens the story’s heart and stakes
Sea of Pleasure and Pain is a compelling sequel that builds beautifully on the foundation laid in the first book. J. Strelou returns with even more emotional weight, character depth, and lyrical storytelling, taking readers further into a world shaped by love, longing, and the complexities of healing.
This second installment doesn’t just revisit familiar characters—it deepens their journeys in meaningful ways. The emotional growth is palpable, and the stakes feel even higher. Where the first book may have introduced us to the raw edges of these characters’ hearts, this sequel explores what happens when those edges collide, intertwine, and begin to soften—painfully, and beautifully.
The chemistry between the leads continues to burn with intensity, but there’s also more vulnerability this time around. Their connection feels earned and lived-in, as they navigate not just attraction, but trust, regret, and emotional accountability. Strelou captures this evolution with grace and realism, never rushing the process or flattening the characters into tropes.
The prose is as evocative as ever—lush, introspective, and often poetic. Strelou has a gift for capturing the quiet devastation of a look, a word, or a silence left hanging. The themes of love and pain remain central, but they’re more nuanced here, blending into a story that’s as much about growth as it is about romance.
If there’s a minor critique, it’s that the book occasionally lingers too long in internal conflict, which might slow the pace for readers craving more external action. Still, for fans of emotionally layered storytelling and character-driven romance, this won’t be a drawback—it’s part of the charm.
As a sequel, Sea of Pleasure and Pain succeeds in every way it needs to: it raises the emotional stakes, develops its characters with care, and delivers moments that are both heart-wrenching and healing. J. Strelou has crafted a follow-up that doesn’t just continue the story—it enriches it.
3 ⭐ 2 🌶️ Sea of Pleasure and Pain plunges readers back into J. Strelou’s lush, dangerous, and decadent underwater world—this time with even higher stakes as Morgana grapples with the ancient Selkie Goddess power now coursing through her veins. The story expands into new kingdoms, introduces more mythical underwater creatures, and leans deeper into prophecies, secrets, and moral grayness.
I’ll admit: I went into this without reading book one, so I was a bit lost in the opening chapters. Fortunately, the author does a solid job weaving in context and backstory naturally, so I was able to catch up and understand the major events and dynamics as they unfolded. The pacing in the beginning was a little slow for me, but once the action kicked in, the story picked up nicely and I found myself fully engaged.
The worldbuilding is easily the standout. The Mer kingdoms, Selkie lore, sirens, drowned beings, and undersea lineages felt creative and immersive. Each creature and culture had its own identity, and I loved learning how their histories and politics shaped the current conflict. The vibes are very Pirates of the Caribbean meets Indiana Jones, but darker, with sensual undertones that fit the Thálassian culture perfectly.
As for the characters, I had mixed feelings. Many of them carried a sense of arrogance or superiority—likely tied to their royal status—which made them feel sharp, cold, or condescending at times. But others shone brightly. Edward, the doomed boy, became an unexpected favorite, and Morgana herself was a strong, compelling presence. Her desperate search for one painful, long-held question was heartbreaking and added real emotional weight to her journey.
By the end, I was invested, and the final stretch has me eagerly waiting for the next installment. With history threatening to repeat itself, the big question now is: Are these characters destined for the same tragedies, or will they finally break the cycle?
This is a great follow-up for fans of dark romantasy, underwater worlds, morally gray love interests, and slow-building adventure.
Sea of Pleasure and Pain is the second book in The Deep Saga by J. Strelou and picks up where book 1 ends with Morgana and Finn preparing for a quest through the ocean kingdoms. In book 1 we learn Amor Perdot Nos (love destroys us) and man does this theme continue in book 2. I felt like I was set up for emotional turmoil and devastation from the prolgoue and my fragile heart aches after all the secrets are laid bare by the end.
In this book we are treated to multiple POVs and I enjoyed getting to know secondary characters like Skye and Aranare, while still following our MCs Morgana and Finn on their journey. I did find Morgana a little frustrating with her stubborn behavior, one track mind and lack of communication and Skye was a bit the same too, but by the end they had improved.
Finn is portrayed as the morally grey enforcer in book one but I loved learning more about his past and seeing his vulnerability at times. His declarations of love make me swoon but he too could do with working on his honest communication and martyr tendencies. The hopeless romantic in me just wants a HEA but with a four book series and phrases like "I love you...three simple words that encompass my salvation and my ruin" I won't get my hopes up.
The underwater world that Julia has created is beautifully described and I loved the journey through the different kingdoms and the real world crossovers, history and mythology she seamlessly weaves together. So much happens in this book from the quests for ancient artifacts and prophecies to political summits and spicy soirees. I can't wait to continue the deep sea adventures in the next two books and see where the tides take us.
If you want to try a different genre of fantasy and enjoy underwater creatures like Mer, Selkies, Sirens and Drowned with a side of spicy romance and adventure give The Deep Saga a try. Book 1 A Sea of Evil and Desire is available now and book 2 A Sea of Pleasure and Pain is out December 6th.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Thank you Net Galley and J. Střelou for the advanced copy.
This book has multiple first person POVs, mostly focusing between Morgana, our main FMC from Book 1, and Skye, a secondary FMC who we get to see a lot more of in this book. There are a few chapters spread out from some of our male MCs, but we mostly focus on the ladies in this one.
The spice content for this book increases a bit more from the first one. I would rank this a 2 out of 5 on my personal scale. While not being overly descriptive, we do get more scenes and different ways our characters get intimate.
I was very glad to see Skye more in this book as I really enjoyed her character in the first book. My heart went out to her for all that she went through and I was glad to see her growth through the story. I'm excited for what strength she'll show us in the next one! It was also nice to see Edward step away from his prejudice more as well. His love for history and spouting random facts and information is really endearing.
Now, this thing between Morgana and Finn... I was so happy when things started progressing again between them after they actually started talking to each other and getting things cleared between them, but of course Finn has to go all secretive protector on her.... I really really hope they are actually end-game and that I'm not just getting yanked along.
The flashbacks we saw through the visions gave us more insight to Manannan and his previous life. We are set to get more of that through book 3. the long-awaited reunion between father-daughter also feels like its just around the corner. This story is one that will stay in my mind with the what-ifs until I'm able to devour the next book! This was a very good follow-up to Sea of Evil and Desire, for sure!
From the emotional twists and turns to the epic plot twists with not one, but four of the main characters, I was on the edge of my seat. I could feel the emotions the characters were experiencing. Their pain, anger, hatred, love, happiness, and sadness seemed to jump off the pages to latch onto the reader.
This installment saw each of our characters going through some of what seemed to be the darkest moments in their lives. Truths were revealed, lies were uncovered, and mistakes were most definitely made. But this added a deeper connection to the story. This allowed you to see the human aspects of our somewhat inhuman characters. This dark and twisted fantasy, this love and hate, makes this such a wonderfully heart-stopping read. And there most definitely were heart-stopping as well as heartbreaking moments.
We get to see our leading lady, Morgana go from a shy, timid girl (in book one), to this fierce warrior in book 2. She may not have mastered her magic yet, but somehow it knows what she needs even when she doesn't. And Skye, her best friend, a tragic tale she WAS. In this book she struggles with who she was, what she became and ultimately, how her and Parker "ended". The war is coming, Manannan is on the Horizon, the drowned are at the gates and there is still a prophecy to be discovered. Plot twist after plot twist makes the book truly engaging.
The ending of this book gives you a glimpse into what the next book will be like, but it also raises some concerning question about our characters. Will Skye be able to convince Morgana of Finn's true intentions? Will Skye and Aranare reveal their true feelings? Will Finn really let Morgana go? And the biggest question, What will Morgana become after she finds her father in the Mors? The anticipation for book 3 is in my bones and I can't wait to see what happens next!

"What is love but a feeling you've known someone in a past life? A sense of home. Sometimes you feel it right away; sometimes it takes time to develop. But once it settles in your heart, you realise it was there from the moment you first saw them."
Sea of Pleasure and Pain carries on right after Sea of Evil and Desire. We dive straight in with the same supporting characters from book one as well as some new faces.
My favourite part of the story has definitely got to be Skye's character development, the way her being depicted in a dark abusive relationship was such a great example of what real women go through daily. The inner struggle of knowing you should leave, yet staying because they might change... It was so raw and meaningful. Seeing her grow and gain so much more confidence as the book progresses was definitely something I enjoyed a lot.
The overall story in book two is so beautifully written and so immersive. I had an underwater playlist playlist as I was reading this and the vibes were immaculate. The worldbuilding and the history is explored to a greater depth which only adds more structure to the story and the different underwater species involved. I loved learning about the God's and their gifts and how their respective races gain certain traits because of that.
I really enjoyed the story and I loved the way it ended which makes me excited for book three whenever that is to come! I sense as each book goes on the contents of the story gets darker and I'm so here for that.
This was a very lore heavy book with a lot of information which is fundamentally very important for the story. The pacing was off at some points for me which hence my rating however the actual story itself was beautiful and I know it'll only get better!
Thank you to NetGalley and J. Strelou for the ARC! First off - the author’s note had me cackling! *Hands up* - You caught me! This was such a wild ride! Like a rollercoaster that just kept getting faster and faster - and one I did not want to get off! I read the first book and then read this second book in record time! The world building was so expansive, and the author did so well in creating a world that is both vast and rich in culture and history! I want to know everything about this world! I really enjoyed that we went more in depth about the history of the characters, the curses and prophecies! There is still so much we don’t know though and I need the next book to find out more! The introduction of all the other species was great! The species are all so unique! I appreciated that the author took creatures that we all know and put her own spin on them! It makes it fun and exciting to read and learn about! Finn, Finn, Finn… What are we going to do with you. His lines in this book were so romantic, and you can tell he is just so sick with love for Morgana! I’m here for it! I can’t wait to see what the next book holds for these two – especially with that ending! I said in my review in my last book that “He keeps saying he's bad but I'm not seeing it!” – still not seeing it but I hope we get to see a more unhinged version of him in the next book. Skye – my darling girl – her chapters were probably my favourite of the whole book! Love her character and I enjoyed seeing her exploring her sexual freedoms! It was so much fun! The ending had me on the edge of my seat and I will be counting down the days until the next book is released! Looking forward to some exciting dinner dates 😉
Sea of Pleasure and Pain picks up right where Sea of Evil and Desire left off and having read book 1 immediately before I had no trouble getting into book 2s story and felt immersed once again in Morgana's story. I loved the pacing of this book it is fast and leaves no time for boredom. We have plenty of world building associated with the underwater realms we deal with politics, the prophecy, and the historical heartbreak associated with these realms. Morganas journey in book 2 involves a lot of support from the side characters although I did find her character a little frustrating at times. I love Edward! he is a fabulous side character and one she clearly can't do without. I wish he was my gay brother he's just fabulous. There's plenty of story around the other abundant characters but I didn't feel lost by their storylines at all. The relationship between Morgana and Finn had me in a chokehold at times with emotions ranging from happy, sad, and angry. it felt pretty intense at times. So much is happening in book two it really is full of action but due to the authors writing style I never once felt confused or unsure what was going on, although I did find myself having to keep rechecking who's POV I was reading about as I had moments of wondering who's POV I was on, this may be more to do with me, than the authors writing style. I really enjoyed this book it had me hooked all the way through even though I'm not sure I'm an ocean fantasy mer, and selkies kind of girl long term.
I’m really impressed how quickly she has released book 1 and 2. I look forward to book 3 o n its release.
I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Sea of Pleasure and Pain opens with a shocking revelation that immediately grabbed me from the very first page. This revelation shifts the dynamics between the characters and sets a tone of tension and mystery that carries through the entire story.
The gradual build-up of the plot is masterful: every scene, every dialogue, every decision feels meaningful, and the aquatic world remains one of the book’s greatest highlights. The descriptions of underwater landscapes, mythical creatures, and maritime cultures are vivid and immersive, creating a universe that feels almost tangible.
The romance between Morgana and Finn is a brilliant slow burn. Finn is determined to protect Morgana at any cost, even if it means risking the destruction of their relationship. The way he balances love, sacrifice, and fear makes every interaction intense and emotionally charged. It’s impossible not to feel the depth of their connection and the weight of the choices they must make.
Additionally, the story is packed with suspense and carefully timed reveals that keep the reader completely engaged. Every emotional twist and challenge Morgana faces makes the story even more compelling and layered.
A slow burn romance filled with mystery, emotion, and rich aquatic fantasy, featuring deep characters and dilemmas that hold you captive from start to finish. Perfect for fans of lush worlds, intense romance, and stories that blend magic, danger, and impossible love.
Thank you for this arc! I’m so glad to be back in this beautifully written underwater world.
Sea of Pleasure and Pain by J. Strelou completely swept me under. From page one, I was hooked — pulled straight into the depths of a story that’s equal parts pleasure, ache, and emotional rip tide.
The worldbuilding is stunning, with sea creatures, sea gods, and deep, layered underwater folklore that feels alive and impossible to resist. A looming prophecy whispers through every tide, heralding the return of the old gods and a brewing war between the seafolk and the drowned — raising the stakes and casting an ominous shadow over the already dangerous, hypnotic ocean realm.
And the characters? Absolutely unforgettable. They’re raw, flawed, magnetic, and shaped by the ocean that holds them — fierce as waves, unpredictable as currents, and impossible not to root for. Their chemistry surges, their conflicts crash hard, and their emotional depth makes every moment hit even deeper.
The romance is dark, intoxicating, and deliciously dangerous, layered with charged back-and-forth, simmering betrayals, and secrets that threaten to drown them both. As they grapple with shifting loyalties and come to terms with their ‘new form,’ their connection twists into something raw and undeniable — equal parts yearning, resentment, and irresistible pull. Every interaction feels volatile, electric, and impossible to look away from.
If you’re craving a story that drags you into the abyss and refuses to let you surface, this is one you’ll want to dive into headfirst.
Reading Sea of Pain and Pleasure, the second installment in the Deep Saga, was a wonderful experience! I found myself enjoying it even more than the first book, largely because the foundation of the underwater world and its magic system had already been established, allowing the story to dive straight into the action from where it left off. I really enjoyed the seamless continuation of the characters’ journeys from book one. It felt like reconnecting with old friends, yet with fresh perspectives due to the addition of new POVs from the other characters. The author’s writing style is very captivating, as it really helped me paint vivid images of the underwater world and the sea creatures. I felt as if this book had the perfect balance of both world building and dialogue, never dragging, but always enhancing the story’s depth. This book truly offers everything: romance, magic, a thrilling mission, spice, and a deeper exploration of water mythology that enriches the saga’s lore. Also I’m completely obsessed with Finn and Morgana’s relationship, their dynamic is intense, emotional, and endlessly compelling; I can’t wait to see how their story unfolds in the next book. And that cliffhanger? I was not expecting the book to end like that and it left me desperate for the next book, wishing I could turn the page and continue right away. This book truly took me to another world, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to be transported from reality and into the underwater world. I’m truly excited to see what lies ahead of this saga!
📚Sea of Pleasure and Pain ✍🏻Julia Strelou Blurb: Deadly power, a destiny revealed, and a burning desire for revenge.
My Thoughts: I definetly enjoyed this one more than the first! I felt the tension was hotter, the storyline more action packed, and the planning was maticulous by the author. The pacing ramped up a lot in this read, and I felt myself more inclined to continue reading. I love the different tropes in this, and the book overall just felt more enjoyable to read. Definetly recommend. Thanks NetGalley, and Author Julia Strelou for the advanced copy of "Sea of Pleasure and Pain: I am leaving my voluntary review in appreciation. #NetGalley #JuliaStrelou #SeaofPleasureandPain ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⚠️Trigger Warnings: domestic violence, sexual manipulation (If these things bother you skip chapter Six and Eight
What a start! I loved seeing Louisa and Aranare step in to help Morgana with her training, and watching her truly grow into it was so satisfying. And then we get Skye’s POV. Oh my gods, I absolutely loved that addition. Skye is such a complicated and fascinating character, and the topics addressed through them feel incredibly important and grounded in real life. Aranare’s POV was another great surprise that added so much depth to the story.
Poor Edward, though. He really can’t catch a break. The emotional hits just keep coming for him and it had me feeling for him the whole way through.
This second book is such an interesting continuation. I’ll be honest: I absolutely devoured the first book, while this one felt a bit slower for me. Not because the story wasn’t good, but just because I personally struggled a bit with reading at the time. The story itself was so worth it. What a ride.
I also discovered something new about myself. Apparently I really love stories involving aquatic life and underwater creatures. This author made that discovery very easy.
There’s plenty of tension and yes… that kind of tension 🥵. If I had one wish, it would be for slightly fewer fights or misunderstandings between the main characters. But overall, it’s a captivating, emotional and beautifully built romantasy that I would absolutely recommend.
