Dreams of the Fallen by AS Colworth is an easy read that is filled with amazing characters and a series that reminds me of my childhood. I first read the prequel, Empires End, before getting straight to this and that was a long prologues but one that added so much needed lore to this. I recommend checking it out for free on the authors website.

I enjoyed the world-building here and how Colworth tied it all together. These are characters that shouldn't work together but each had their own personality and motives that reading about each individual was unique, which can be hard to decipher in a fantasy book.

Colworth spun a narrative about control and free-thinking, alongside the destruction that this can cause. We see characters that are deluded into thinking this is acceptable and when we see characters succumb to control, you can't help but feel for them. Especially when it isn't their doing.

The story itself was familiar, and when I finished and read that this was The Dark Crystal-inspired I could see the influence with this.

This was a great first book in the series and I can't wait to see what else is in store.

Cassius battles to keep his role as Dominus and the City in balance following the King's death, as vultures start to circle vying to be the next ruler, he must also figure out who is a traitor and find the next heir.
Grechen takes a chance and helps young warrior Dela escape, knowing his fate may be death or imprisonment, but he believes she isn't the monster everyone seems to think, and that their Elders have been hiding the truth.
Meanwhile Dela is on the run, confused by her mark, hidden powers and her deadly outburst, she heads for the deadlans to find answers, and uncovers a past shrouded in secrets and conflict.
This has great worldbuilding, complex characters, mystery, action, and is an epic journey of survival.

I'm embarrassed by how long it took me to read this book, and it's not even the book's fault! I was given an e-copy of Dreams of the Fallen in exchange for an honest review... months ago. I've always struggled with reading kindle editions of books on my phone, but I'm not normally so slow. I only mention this because I don't want anyone to think that I hated the book or that it was a drag. It was 100% me.

If you like fantasy set in a world which has both humans and new fantasy races, this book may be for you. I love elves/dwarves/orcs etc. but I also love when authors create their own races. I think A.S. Colworth did a pretty great job with the world building in this regard. I think the setting is my favourite thing about the book. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the action-packed opening. I found it difficult to get a sense of what was happening or why. This is a personal thing though. If you like when a book throws you in the deep end, then you'll have no problems with this.

The writing is easy to get into, the characters fairly likeable (though I found myself not always clueing in to who was who for the side characters), and the story is both straight forward but interesting. All in all, it's a pretty solid read.

A.S. Colworth's 'Dreams of the Fallen' is a captivating epic fantasy debut, immersing readers in a world where remnants of a fallen empire reverberate through the here and now. Drawing on the mysticism of The Dark Crystal and Roman-inspired cultures, the book tracks Dela, tormented by a past she cannot remember, as she traverses a dangerous world of ancient powers, politics, and secrets buried deep.

The author has created a "breath-holding, depressing world" with rich, detailed descriptions and an innovative magic system. The engrossing story, full of rebellion, conspiracy, and betrayal, makes pages fly by with its short, quick chapters. This novel has a genuinely new approach to fantasy, going beyond common tropes, and the writer's skill at drawing readers like me in instantly to its complex conflicts. I will strongly recommend all the fantasy fans of readers to read "Dreams of the Fallen".

I would like to start by thanking the author for sending me an eARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Dreams of the Fallen is the first book in an epic fantasy series and the author’s debut novel, telling the story of several characters in different parts of a world divided by an ancient war, as well as by old secrets and mysteries.

I enjoyed this book very much. I found the plot intriguing right from the beginning and the author’s writing style is quite beautiful and evocative. The story moves at a steady but brisk pace, which keeps the action flowing nicely and which made me want to keep reading.

We follow several POVs and I can say that I liked all of them. They all have interesting backstories and throughout this first book we see them grow and change, make some tough decisions, and fight for what they think is right, which gives way to some tense and, at the same time, emotional moments.

Overall, I liked this book a lot and I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us next. The book is out now and there is also a novella set in this world, Empire’s End, set before the events happening in Dreams of the Fallen, which I may read soon while I patiently wait for book 2 in the series.

I would highly recommend you give it a try if you like epic fantasy stories with a captivating plot and well-built characters.

Dreams of the fallen is set in a world filled with chaos and strife. Where fearsome Kosar have been created to be enslaved and instead have turned on their creators leading to their supposed destruction.

Dela dazed and confused and holding a power she does not understand nor can control must find a way to free her people and bring about a peace that they have never known.

I think as a first book this was a really good write. The world building is good, the characters felt very believable and the struggles they faced were tried and tested; we fear what we don’t understand and what we can’t control. And control is a big theme in this book for sure. The one thing I sometimes struggled with were the amount of names used, even just for one character, I can see why it was done in this way as it allowed for little reveals throughout, but at times I felt a little confused, although I enjoyed the story regardless and have been prone to get confused when reading many fantasy’s (so it could just be a me thing). There is however a prequel which I have yet to read, so perhaps if I’d read that first it may have explained some things that had me confused.

I thought the ending was satisfying, but gave enough of a teetering on a knife’s edge to be excited about a sequel.

Wow, this book was absolutely fantastic! It's genuinely unlike anything else I've read recently. The narrative expertly weaves together three distinct perspectives: Dela, a marked Kosar with mysterious powers; Gretchen, a Kosar general; and Cassius, Dominus for the human civilization. Watching each of these characters undergo significant growth throughout the story was incredibly rewarding.

What truly captivated me about Dela's journey was her profound struggle with trust. As a marked Kosar, created to be a slave and possessing the terrifying ability to vaporize threats, she's inherently isolated. Her internal conflict about who she can rely on, especially with the looming threat of her marks impacting her mind as she ages, adds such incredible depth to her character. Dela's ability to trust anyone she encounters is constantly tested.

Everyone in this book is at war, both externally and internally. The author's descriptions are so clear and vivid that I was immediately swept up in the world and its intricate conflicts. Highly recommend!

Science fiction is one of those genres that I just struggle with. There is such a focus on world building and so many characters that I get lost. I know there is a prequel and honestly I wish I had started there. The author offers it for free through their website and I feel like I would have a better understanding and enjoyed it more had I started there.

I don't think I'm the target audience for this title and yet I still managed to enjoy it! It did take me some time to really get invested in the story and I had to re-read some parts but overall I liked the story, so I would definitely consider reading the series.

I truly think this book is going to be a favorite for a lot of people. The story itself is fascinating and for a debut novel the writing is solid... All the issues I had were 100 % a me thing. I will probably go back and read the prequel and re-visit this novel in the future.

I definetly recommend reading the prequel novella before starting this book. The Novella is free on the authors website and it's so good.

The roman empire inspired world is a breath of fresh air, it's different and well done. I enjoyed all of the three plotlines and those comming together in the end and the tension that build up kept me glued to the page.
The politics are very tought out and didn't get boring at all. I liked the Senate setting. Sometimes the names, got a little confusing, but it got easier as the book continued. The plot kept me on my toes the whole time.
I'm very interested in how the magic system and the story is further developed.

I recived an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Dreams of the Fallen is a amazing debut novell from A.S.Colworth, and it's amazing from start to finish. Where you will never get a boring moment, with short chapters to keep you going for hours.

It's a breath holding, depressing world filled with politics, betrayal and conspiracy everywhere, rebellion, and ancient powers beyond their wildest imagination.

You follow 3 exciting and believable characters to keep your excitement going, and I hope to see more of this world. So add this to your TBR and see their world fall apart, because this book is out now!

There's also a novella sett 300 years before this book, which you can get for free by subscribe to his newsletter.

I probably might be the only person to use the word dystopian for a fantasy book, but this is what the vivid world the author created in this book felt like to me... Dystopian Fantasy... The anarchy rose in waves from the pages...

And in the midst of all this... Dela... Her character arc was interesting to say the least... I could not wait to know more about her...

I also read the Prequel Empires End, and this helped make even more sense of the book, which is an intense introduction to the series... I can't wait to read the rest of it. Wow.

First and foremost, I want to thank the author A.S. Colworth for gifting me the electronic copy of "Dreams Of The Fallen" in exchange for my review.

It took a while for me to finally dive in and read the book, as I was constantly interrupted by other things. But let me tell you, once you cast your full attention to this story, it will grip you, especially if you are a fan of the high fantasy vibes.

"Dreams of The Fallen" is a complex read set in a world with strong Roman vibes, a very similar ruling system and the whole cast of characters named with the most popular Roman names. I loved this theme in the book very much, as I am a huge fan of the Ancient Roman era, and anything even remotely close to the subject immediately draws my attention.

This world is inhabited by three races: humans, who are on the verge of extinction, Elders, ancient, powerful beings who rule in Amira and keep the peace; and kosar, the most mysterious creatures, whose initial purpose was to serve.

The King died, and the balance is threatened to fracture. Cassius, Dominus of the Senate, struggles to keep power in his hands, protect the peace and find the traitor who was responsible for the King's death.

Dela Addamious is on the run. She has a strange mark that connects to the unknown, hidden powers that terrify her.

Grechen, the Kosar general, risks everything to shield Dela against the wrath of the Elders, who believe she has grown mad and needs to be destroyed.

I enjoyed reading all three POVs, but Dela's was my favourite. I think the author did a tremendous job throwing her into a hot mess that led her to find something she desired the most: the secrets of the past. She has changed so much from the beginning to the end of the book, and I loved seeing her growth.

Overall, it was a great book. One of those that will leave you to wonder what exactly inspired the author to create such a unique, amazing fantasy world with a strong attention to every detail that greatly plends into the plot actions.

If the Roman Empire was all that remained after an apocalypse.

On my YouTube channel, I exclusively review self-published and indie fantasy books. This was a fun read, with lots of magic and mystery to keep things interesting. It ended up with an overall score of 7.2/10 on my INDIE ranking scale. My full review can be seen here: https://youtu.be/S-V7vr7tymo

Here's the quick summary:

Immersion (worldbuilding): 8/10 - Feels like a post-apocalypse, with humans becoming nothing more than myth as the 'old gods'. They created the Kosar, who eventually rebelled and destroyed the humans (or so they thought). Plenty of politics within the Kosar and human populations, each grappling with power and questioning authority. And lots of mystery behind who Dela is and where she comes from.

Names (characters): 7/10 - Dela didn't have much of a personality, other than just being the chosen one. She felt a little too tropy for me. But I did really enjoy Cassius and Grechen, and thought they had some great conflict and tension they had to deal with.

Da Magic (& creatures): 7.5/10 - Dela's telekinetic powers are pretty cool, where she can basically vaporize people if she loses control of her emotions. And a lot of the book is about learning how this magic works and rediscovering what was lost.

Infrastructure (plot, pacing, prose, etc.): 6.5/10 - The prose was good, very accessible. My main issue was just how much exposition was in the dialogue, which led to quite a bit of telling throughout. With so many info dumps, it does drag the pacing a bit, especially in the first half. But ultimately, I do think the plot rewards the reader by the end.

Enjoyment: 7/10 - This started off pretty strong, but it was hard to stay engaged and interested with all the exposition. The story itself was unique and compelling, I just wanted less hand holding.

If you want to experience a post-apocalyptic Roman empire story, then you need to check this one out.

If you'd like to watch an interview with the author where we talk about Dreams of the Fallen, check out my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/live/D-dMAvQFzUM

Dreams of the Fallen is a Roman-inspired epic Fantasy story with lots of depth and devastation. Before you dive into the novel, I highly recommend you read the novella Empire's End first. It helps with some of the detail.

In Dreams of the Fallen, we mainly get two POVs from the opposing sites.
- The Kosar Dela, who is fleeing from the only life she remembers into the unknown to find out who she truly is
- The human Cassius, who is in way over his head trying to govern the empire after the king's tragic death

I love Fantasy stories where you get to know both sides intimately and learn about their motivation and their believes. In Dreams of the Fallen, both Dela and Cassius are dealing with the impact of their cultures' believes and they need to find a way to maneuver around it. That leads to a gritty and dark story with lots of emotional moments. It is a bit slower read, but to me, it makes it so much more enjoyable as you slowly uncover what's really going on (and believe me... your first instinct will be wrong ;) ).

Action, meddling gods, races you have never seen in a fantasy story, reluctant heroes, and so much more! It took me a bit to get into the story, but once I did, I couldn't let go. Can't wait for book 2! (Btw, no huge cliffhanger ending - yay! While there is still a bit of unanswered storyline, the ending is very satisfying.)

Thanks to the author for sending me an earc! Opinions are my own. Plus, I enjoyed it so much that I got myself a paperback copy ;)

Hi! I’m the author of Dreams of the Fallen, so I won’t be leaving a star rating, but I did want to take a moment to share a little about what I was trying to do with this book.

This story has lived in my head for a long time, and it means a lot to finally share it with the world. As a debut indie author, I wanted to write something that felt both epic and intimate—set in a world shaped by ancient power and rebellion, but centered on one character’s fight to survive, to matter, and to change the fate handed to her.

I’ve spent a lot of time crafting this series, and while this first book stands on its own, it's also the opening to a much larger arc. You'll uncover more about the kosar, the broken empire, and the nature of the Shadow Stone as the series unfolds. My goal was to build something layered—where each book reveals more, and each character choice carries weight.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, whether you loved it, hated it, or landed somewhere in between. Reviews and feedback help other readers discover the book and help me grow as a writer.

Thank you so much for reading.

– Ash

This book has a lot to offer.

This epic fantasy adventure kicks off with humans at war with the beings they created using magic. I think they wanted to make golem-like creatures but ended up with something way more powerful—the Kosar.

The story starts after the Kosar have rebelled and overthrown their human masters. The surviving humans are now hiding out in the deserts, trying to survive while fighting off the Kosar. It's a messy, ongoing battle for survival and control.Being humans, there's a ton of political drama, bad decisions, and flawed characters. And then there's Dela, a Kosar who has access to the old magic. Both sides want her for her power, and we follow her journey through this exciting world.

I do suggest reading the prequel novel, it gives the backstory and I think that is needed to understand parts of this book.

Overall, it is a good story with an interesting world and characters. I'm assuming there will be a second book in the series as this ending left me with questions…

I read the prequel story Empire's End and do highly recommend it first before diving into this novel.
First, because it's so well written and second, because it gives a glimpse of background which really fleshes the story out.
When Dela goes on the run to save herself, not knowing why or where the mark on her chest came from, she sets in motion an epic story of magic, betrayal and retribution. Political intrigue at it's finest, we're really not sure who to trust or believe. Cassius takes his unwanted role as Dominus and tries to maneuver himself through as a reluctant hero. Great character work throughout the story! it's definitely one of the strengths of the book. The Kosar are an interesting race and we get to see the inner workings of their fight for control while waging war on the humans. Watching Dela come in to herself and her power is amazing.
The world building is enormous, taking different cultures and bringing them together in a believable way.
I really enjoyed the whole ride!

I was kindly sent this book by the author in return for an honest review.
Hard to believe this is a debut!
A very well thought out fantasy with some really loveable characters that I found myself desperately rooting for in the final chapters!
I became a little confused shortly after starting the book, so I decided to read the prequel novella, Empire's End (free on the authors website!). This cleared up a lot of my confusion, helped a lot withbthe worldbuilding and history, and was a fantastic story on it's own, so I would highly recommend starting with it.
The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is that I love a big battle. It was building towards what I thought was going to be an epic fight, but it never really came.
But the story doesn't sound like it's over, so maybe this will happen in book 2??
I certainly hope so, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for it!
A very impressive debut which hints there could be special things to come from this new author

This book was a breath of fresh air! You are thrown straight into the action and suspense of the chaotic world right from the get-go. The world building is amazing. You can really visualise everything.

The book is told from the perspectives of 3 characters who each have their own struggles that are excellently woven together. Cassius struggles as dominus to keep control of the human population, Grethchen takes on a huge risk against the Elders to protect Dela, and Dela who is a Kosar with an ancient mark upon her and strange powers with no memory. This was different from the things I've been reading recently, and I found myself excited with each chapter.
I found the magic system to be easy to understand. This book had a bit of everything, politics, chaos, destruction, hope, mystery, and a ton of adventure and action. The ending has set up the premise for a sequel really well. Highly recommend.

I thought this book was well paced with some solid world building and unique and interesting ideas. Personally, I would have liked the glossary to be at the beginning, but that's personal preference.

This book had some really, really beautiful descriptions, which made it so easy to conjure up images of the people and places. I think my favourite was "Her jet-black scale armour glimmered in the light, the intricate inlays of amethyst catching the eye with their deep, vibrant hues." The dark red cloak draped elegantly over her shoulders, flowing behind her like a banner of defiance." I can see those colours so perfectly, and they are stunning.

The plot was engaging and exciting, and I was rooting for Dela from the very beginning. The characters were multi dimensional, and I got a real sense of who they were and why they were the way they were.

Overall, this was a strong first book in a fantasy series, and I'm interested to see where it goes next.

Although the start of this book felt slow with world building and sooo many different characters, once I got into it I was hooked.

The story is told from three main perspectives and to begin with they are very separate stories. As the book progresses the stories begin to cleverly weave into each other. I also loved the science fiction element where humans are believed to have died out.

Each character is so relatable as they suffer from self doubt, trust issues and the fight for control.

I read that this book is inspired by The Dark Crystal (which is one of my favourite movies) and all of a sudden everything became much easier to understand. I wish I had known about the prequel and read this first as it seems that this book is easier to follow with the knowledge of what happens in the prequel.

One thing I found difficult was the amount of spelling errors, even of one of the main characters names - Grechen often became Gretchen.

The ending is left on a slight cliff hanger indicating that there is going to at least be another book, if not more. I’m excited to continue the journey, especially with Dela who was my favourite character.

This was a very enjoyable read! I read the prequel novella, Empires End, before jumping into this one, and I recommend it! While not story-breaking, it does offer up some awesome lore for this world and characters.

The world-building and how the characters are all brought together were my favorite part of this book. Everyone has their endgame motivation that carries them throughout the book. With this, it made each character unique and interesting in their ways. I'm interested in seeing where this story takes Dela!!

There was a great sense of mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed as well. Once I thought I had a grasp on what was going on, there would be a slight detour or plot twist that kept me on my toes. The political intrigue in this was really good, engaging, and fun to follow! If you're looking for a new epic adventure, definitely give Dreams of the Fallen a chance!!

I was instantly drawn to this book by the amazing front cover image - which initially just looks like an intriguing hand print - but on further inspection, reveals the battle image beyond that.

As you know, I never read blurbs beforehand and so was quite surprised once j started to delve into this one.

I think from the initial view of the cover, is imagined that it might be a thriller, but this actually forms the start of a new epic fantasy series.

This is definitely not a genre that I read too often - I get bogged down with the initial world building at times and find that initial period of starting the series doesnt grab me in as much as other genres.

This did happen a little in this book and it did take me a little while to settle into the world, storyline and extensive character list.

The sheer number of characters (and their multiple names) had me a little confused - but once I'd settled, if became clear why the names were being used and this added extra intrigued to the storyline.

I did eventually settle into this and found that the adventure flows throughout and it did eventually grab me in - again, which I often find - finding that by the end of this first book, I raring to get going into the next.

I think that the author did a great job plotting this - especially being a debut - and once it grabbed me, I was in for the tension that was building us towards the final battle - which obviously will come later in the series....

A good read overall and one that I would definitely like to continue further.

The characters were well developed here and I feel invested in their journey - can't wait to see how this continues.
