Connor Family #0.5

What the Heart Needs

Rate this book
This novella is a prequel to the Connor Family series. You can read it at any point; it does not have to be read first. It follows Jim Connor and Kelly Reilley, Devlin's (Where the Heart Is) parents.

A tortured past. A chance meeting. And a love that can't be ignored.

Kelly Reilley

For years, Kelly Reilley was careful not to let anyone into her closely protected personal space. The last time she did so, against her own wishes, she came out battered and bruised. And then, Jim Connor walked into her life and breached those walls without her even noticing. Something that shocked her to her core...and made her want things she didn’t think she could ever have.

Now, she's happily in love with the man of her dreams, but the scars of the past can't be forgotten. Especially when they threaten to stop her from getting her happy ever after.

Jim Connor

Jim Connor has two things in his life that are important to his family and his job. He works as an electrician for a construction company, but his goal is to build houses one day. A dream he always thought was the thing he wanted most...until he ran into Kelly Reilley at the grocery store.

Now, dinners at home with his parents no longer are no longer on the schedule. Instead, he wants to spend every minute he can with her.

And that goal of building a house? It's now turned into a home for her.

What the Heart Needs - Jenni Simonis

I really enjoy this series and I will definitely have to do a reread of it. Jim and Kelly are amazing characters and they have such a great chemistry. I love getting to know them and their family before the main characters of the rest of the series. This is such a wonderful family and I loved everyone I’ve met so far. The series is the perfect cozy read.

I loved being able to learn more about Devlin's parents, Jim and Kelly. Kelly went through so much in her teens and finding Jim helped her grow and become more comfortable in everything. Their meet cute was just that, very cute and instalove, especially for Jim. This novella was a great setup for the series.

Worth the Read

I went in blind to this novella and the author was new to me. When I first finished, I was thinking a rating of 3 stars would suffice, BUT I wasn't aware it was part of an anthology. Now that I've read up on the anthology and what it encompasses, I raised it to 4 stars, because the story and it's content makes so much sense. I will advise anyone who reads this as a standalone novella or within the anthology, to read the Trigger Warnings FIRST. They can be found at the end of the story.

Since this was a novella, there was a lot packed into it. There are time hops, for the sake of moving the story along, while also enhancing Jim and Kelly's relationship.

Kelly, the FMC, has a traumatic past that gets revealed as you read and this is why you need to read the TWs first. Jim is an MMC who truly loves and cares about Kelly, and he does have a dirty talking mouth. He put control in Kelly's hands and doesn't get impatient or angry with her. There are some tender moments in this story, even with the intense information that is shared through Kelly's POV snippets.

I now understand why this novella was part of this We Shall Rise anthology and I will be reading the rest of the stories in that, as well as the Connor Family series. This story deals not only with the traumatic experience the FMC went through, but the long term effects-mental and physical-which all come to play.

As mentioned, I originally read this as part of an anthology and then I reread it on Kindle Unlimited.

This book is one to read. Please do know that this book can be difficult due to pregnancy loss, abuse, toxic family and the heartaches.

I loved this book due to being able to connect on a deeper level of the book. My story is nothing like the characters in the book, but, it took me into places that made me feel less alone. It also reminded me of how far I have come and how proud of myself.

The characters of this book are truly amazing minus a select few. Jim truly was a support that Kelly absolutely needed. Jim showed Kelly that not all men are awful and that you can push forward at your own comfort level. Jim showed Kelly how she deserved to be treated. When he learned what Kelly endured he was always there, he never threw her past in her face, but wanted to help her push forward. Jim never pushed her into anything that she didn’t want and was always what was needed. When Kelly endured losses he was always there and supporting her. Just truly what was needed.

The story of Kelly and Jim was needed because it shows that you can push forward from every trauma you endured, it shows that your past doesn’t define you, and that timing is everything. Having open communication will always be key.

Even with Kelly’s difficult storyline it was an amazing read about resilience, pushing forward and never giving up.

3.75/4 stars,
Open door spice, low frequency

This book kind of felt like a super packed, speedy recap - which, makes sense as it’s a prequel and a novella, but the amount of things covered feels like a lot for the length!

There are some truly heartbreaking themes, that sometimes feel like they end and we’re whipping into the next thing so fast you almost can’t soak it in.

There’s also some kind of funny tiptoeing around words considering the open door spice. See: Cum, Blow Job.

That being said, it was really well buttoned up, and sweet. Jim’s definitely a cinnamon roll - says the right things, is very thoughtful, and also has a raunchy mouth in the sheets! 🤣

Kelly’s had a loooottttt happen in her life. Thankfully she has an amazing friend, whose family became her family. So she’s resilient (yet at times feels incongruously naive).

All that to say, I enjoyed this novella, and think if you’re okay with the darker themes in the content warnings, you’ll probably enjoy it as well as a quick read.

A cozy novella for a lovely fall day.
Prequel to the Conner family series

A encounter between Jim Connor and Kelly Reilley, sets in motion a heartwarming tale of love and connection. Kellys past experiences have led her to be guarded, and hesitant to form close relationships. However, upon Jim Connor
Entering her life with his unwavering support and love, helped her slowly lower her defenses, revealing the deep impact that unconditional acceptance can have on one's life.

This well crafted story built upon a romance characterized by unconditional love. It explored future possibilities, lifes ups and downs, losses and established a compelling plot built upon character dynamics. The characters are authentic,
raw and relatable on a emotional level. The love story of Kelly and Jim was truly genuine, instilling hope in love.

** I received this novel as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) but all opinions are my own **

I absolutely loved the story of Kelly & Jim and their romance. This was a somewhat short read but very satisfying! Jenni Simonis is great at writing romances that go into the future instead of writing the initial love story and this book also does so, in the most satisfying way!

Without giving more spoilers, this book did an amazing job of capturing multiple sensitive subjects, including pregnancy loss. It was so well written that I was feeling the emotions with the characters! I would definitely recommend this book to other readers and will continue to read more from Jenni Simonis as I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen from her!

This novella is a beautiful and heartfelt love story that shows how two broken people can find strength in each other. Kelly’s past pain is felt in every chapter, and watching her slowly let Jim into her world is both emotional and inspiring. Jim is the perfect gentle and supportive partner, and his dedication to building a future with her makes their romance feel genuine and deep. Their connection grows naturally, and the small town setting and found family moments make the story even more comforting. This book blends hurt and healing in a very touching way, with just the right amount of spice and tenderness. A lovely and uplifting read for anyone who loves romance filled with heart and hope.

This was such a short but sweet little novella. I will admit it can be a tear jerker near the end of the book. I shed some tears for sure. Check your trigger warnings because the author talks about some deep and personal mental health topics. Always prioratize your mental health. I really loved watching Jim finding his forever. This is a prequel novella for the Connor Families Series. The book was short but oh so sweet. You got to see the relationship blossom and go through the normal wears and tears of life. I loved how the author wrote and authentic experience story. She wrote it just like she was telling someones real life story. I cannot wait to see what else is instore for this series.

Broken Book Therapist Reviews

At chapter 5 I was thinking what sweet, gentle, aaww shucks kindof book. My parents got married in the 80s and thinking about dating then was sweet. But then.... this hit me in the feels and didn't stop. The love and determination and fierceness of the love despite obstacles. The heartbreak of what tr@um@ (including fertility issues and pregnancy loss) does to relationships and self. And finding hope and love through that and choosing one another is what makes not juat survivable but beautiful again.

This book explored many difficult themes - the mental health ones of grief and loss, depression, talks surrounding suicide, infertility, as well as rape, and sexual assault. I enjoyed the exploration of love and the way that Marnie and Sebastian loved each other and by extension their family.
Overall though, I thought this book was too long-winded. I felt like it could have ended a lot quicker as I thought that many scenes were repetitive. It also felt as though the main characters were dealing with way too much.

Many times a novella has left us feeling like there wasn't enough. While I really did want more, it wasn't because it felt rushed or unfinished. It was a perfect story. I cannot wait for more.

It was emotional at times and beautiful!!

A story of overcoming your past, PTSD, finding a "second look" love, struggle to conceive, romance and spice.

I love Jenni Simonis books and I will be reading more!
