Rate this book
e was born to lead. She was fated to be his. He never wanted her... until she was gone.

In a world ruled by ancient laws and untamed power, the Alphason was destined to inherit the title of Highclaw-strong, fearless, and bound by prophecy to a girl he never chose. She was a mystery, a waif from a distant tribe, eyes too strange, magic too wild. A gift, they said. A blessing. But to him, she was nothing.

For years, she endured his distance. For months, she hoped he had changed. On the final night, she chose freedom. And she bled for it.

Now, she has vanished, leaving behind only whispers and shadows. But something has changed in the Alphason-his wolf stirs, restless, hungry. The bond he once rejected now burns through his veins, an ache he cannot outrun. She is gone, but she is his.

And he will hunt her to the ends of the earth to bring her home.

Even if he has to beg for forgiveness.
Even if he has to break the world apart to find her.

Because some bonds are never meant to be severed.

1. Hagan was cold and cruel to Seren. He disrespected her in front of the whole tribe. He stood back and allowed everyone to bully her relentlessly. He lost his temper and broke her arm during a brutal sparring session. And she just … let it all go??? 🤬
2. The conflict between Hagan and Seren felt manufactured. It was common knowledge that spending all of this time apart in the middle of their bonding could cause lifelong damage to their bond. Yet, despite the prophecy that they had known for YEARS, his father “kept him busy, piling on responsibility, pushing him harder” and keeping him away from Seren. It wasn’t like Hagan was busy 24/7 “keeping the tribe safe”; he admitted to himself that “even when the border threats had died down months ago” he “had kept tightening security, drilling the patrols, pushing the wolves harder.” He worked longer and longer hours, leaving Seren alone and neglected and sometimes not coming home at all. Lia may have used her magic to make him kiss her, but she didn’t have anything to do with the way he willingly and knowingly neglected Seren and the bond.
3. If the bond was starting to be affected by the time they were spending apart, and Seren “was growing thinner, her face paler, her eyes dulled”, why was Hagan moving “with effortless confidence now, stronger, faster, more sure than ever. There was ease in his body, vitality in his voice.”
4. Veyr had always had feelings for Seren; the only thing that stopped him was the prophecy. Why did his feelings die when the bond between her and Hagan was broken?
5. Why did Seren ask to keep her ability to talk with animals if she planned on moving to the city where there were none?
6. Yeah, I was enjoying this book a lot more before Hagan decided that instead of working to earn Seren's forgiveness, he was just going to force his way back into her life and her friends started helping him do it.
7. Why were the references to "The Forsaken" so deliberately ambiguous? It wasn’t until 85% that we were given a vague idea of what they actually were.

This is a fated rejected mate book. It was very long, but held my interest. What I didn’t like was the formatting. Chapters had characters’ names on them but weren’t really about them
or from their POV. Some pages only had a short paragraph on them. Other paragraphs were unnecessarily long. Details were redundantly retold from both sides.

I hope we get a book for Lia.

2 stars⭐⭐

I have so much to say about this book, so buckle up. SPOILERS ALERT!!!!

This started off as a solid 5-star read. I was engaged, impressed, and invested. But somewhere around the 65% mark, it completely fell apart. And not in a “plot twist” kind of way more like a "did someone else write the second half?" kind of way. Honestly, by the end, 1 star would be too generous.

Let’s begin with the basics:
There were constant grammar errors, typos, weird formatting, and unclear POVs. I’m not usually picky about technical details, but these were in your face. If you’re sensitive to writing quality, turn back now or you might end up throwing your Kindle across the room.

Structure of this review:
Because the book splits so sharply in tone and quality, I’ll divide my review into two parts:

Part 1: 0–60% — Promising, engaging, emotionally grounded.
Part 2: 60–100% — Absolute disaster.

🔹🔹 PART 1 (0–60%)
This section? Honestly? 4.5–5 stars.
The characters were grounded and well-written, especially the FMC.

She lived in a quiet village with her family. She was a person of color, it wasn't her whole personality just a description. We meet her at age 8, and even then she’s composed, thoughtful, and wise beyond her years. Not in a precocious, "not like other kids" way, but in a calm, old-soul kind of way. She knew she was fated to someone and accepted it with grace.

At 12, she was sent to live with her fated mate, the MMC and his family. They had already met her when she was younger. His family welcomed her. Imperfect, but ultimately kind.

This is where the FMC shone.
She was everything I want in a strong heroine: composed, intelligent, emotionally resilient. She didn’t scream, didn’t sass, didn’t throw tantrums. She held her chin high, worked hard, and didn’t give her bullies the satisfaction of breaking her. She was grace under pressure.

Meanwhile, the MMC was... a jerk. He was in love with another gir and didn’t want a fated mate chosen for him. Fair enough. But the way he treated the FMC was not okay, and his family’s “gentle parenting” approach didn’t help.

From age 12 to 14, the FMC endured a toxic environment. Yet she never cracked. She focused on herself, her goals, and stayed true to her values. She grew into a character I respected deeply.

At 16, the MMC started to come around. He realized the OW was more childhood fantasy than real love. He chose to explore his bond with the FMC and finally became a decent, even thoughtful partner. Their slow-burn romance was well-paced and emotionally rewarding. The forest walks, the small gestures, the quiet gifts. chef’s kiss.

At 18, they sealed their bond and began living together. But then… the turning point:
The MMC was frequently away on patrols with the OW (why though?) and a situation was manipulated to make it look like he cheated (OW kisses him just as FMC walks in). Cue drama.

Up until this point, we had:
- A mature, calm, intelligent FMC who handled emotional hardship with dignity.

- A flawed but redeemable MMC who learned and tried.

- A promising side character, Veyr, the MMC’s quiet, mysterious best friend who also happened to love the FMC, but respectfully stepped aside.

Apart from the grammar and formatting issues, the writing felt nostalgic, soft, and engaging.

And then...

🔹🔹 PART 2 (60–100%)
It was like someone ripped out the soul of the book and replaced it with a bad Wattpad fanfic.

What. Happened.

The FMC?
Completely unrecognizable. She went from wise and composed to sassy, foul-mouthed, and aggressively “independent” in the most cliché, immature way possible. 🤦🤦🤦🤦

Suddenly, she’s cursing at everyone, wearing combat boots and tiny shorts “so small half her ass was hanging out” (author’s words, not mine), getting a lip ring, and speaking in cringy one-liners. Apparently, a makeover = freedom. Have in mind she was never restricted in her fashion choices.🤢🤢

No, this wasn’t empowerment. It was character assassination.

“I swear to the goddess if that overgrown mutt shows up at my door with one more bag of takeout, I’m going to scream.”

Who is this person? Certainly not the girl from the first half of the book.

The plot?
After the betrayal, she moves to a human town and of course works at a bar, since thats the 101 of all rejected mates books profession. There, she meets a new group of horrendous side characters who nearly gave me an aneurysm:

Friend #1: The “badass” bartender whose entire personality is 50% threats of violence, 50% saying things like and I'm quoting:
"I'll break your jar. With a spoon"
"I will rearrange your face, pretty boy"
"Males are useless anyways"
"Men are just good for sex"

Friend #2: Hyper-sexualized, constantly objectifying every male in sight. Her dialogue reads like a bad Tinder pick-up line generator. Examples:

"I mean did you see those glutes? that's not a man that's a walking thirst trap. What is he packing under those jeans? because damn"

"Well hello muscles. Are you the dessert? she purred. "Because I'm counting carbs today, but I might make an exception"

"He brought lunch and glutes like that? Girl, you sure you don't want me to take him for a test drive first?"

Friend #3: Exists solely to shout things like “Let’s go! We’re missing the fun!” before charging into danger.

The dialogue? Unbearable. Every line was a punchline from a bad superhero movie.

The MMC?
He was groveling which, honestly, fair. But the FMC’s response wasn’t maturity or growth. It was petty, bratty, and often just plain mean. I’m all for making a guy work for it, but this wasn’t growth. This was regression.

Veyr?
The quiet, mysterious best friend? Forget him. The author did.
Suddenly, he’s chatty, warm, and says he never really loved the FMC, it was more of a brother/sister bond. Um... what? You expect me to erase chapters of development?

The OW?
Turns out, she “enchanted” the MMC, so the kiss wasn’t really his fault. (Okay.) She’s actually in love with the MMC’s second-best friend (what?), and she’s now a tragic figure who everyone pities. Sure. Why not.

Final thoughts: 🤦🤦
This book had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. The first half was rich in emotional depth, character nuance, and quiet strength. The second half? A generic, cringe-filled mess that felt like it was written by a completely different person.

Nothing made sense. Character arcs were destroyed. Dialogue was unbearable. Plot holes abounded. Emotional stakes? Gone.

This is a fantasy romance story where they live among humans but most humans are unaware of their existence. (think Harry Potter where they live under their nose). The book is full of shifters, oracles, enchantresses, crones, etc…There are modern amenities(computers, planes, phones etc) along with old world living situations.

I have read two other romance stories by this author. They were set in today’s world, and I enjoyed both of them. I started following this author on Wattpad, as I knew I would want to read more of her offerings. When she started to release this book on wp, I was hesitant at first. Not because I had doubts in her as an author, I just wasn’t sure I was in the mood for a fantasy book. I tend to stay away from the genre as many of them are with the main couple only getting happy for nows until the next book tears them apart again. I just have so many stories I want to read that I have found as I have gotten older that I have less patience for serials. In this story, the couple get their HEA…I am sure they will show up in future stories, but each story (I believe)will focus on a couple and the trials they go through during their relationship. Anyhoo, this story started on wp, and I waited for several chapters to load before I started it.

The author spends the first several chapters establishing the setting, the characters, and the overall feel for the book. So, if you are expecting instant gut punch betrayal, you will be disappointed. Following are slight spoilers or an overview of events. Because I am trying not to spoil this fantastic book, I am leaving out so, so much. SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD

This story revolves around Seren and Hagan. She lives in a different village and at the age of 7 their fates/gifts are revealed to the them. She has been endowed with 5 elements which is unheard of. The crone warns her to keep these secret as others will fear what they do not understand. So, even at a young age, in her own village she is seen somewhat as an outcast. You know, the weird girl with no gifts. Then one day Hagan’s father visits with some of his trusted “soldiers”. He was looking for the girl that has been prophesied for his son(Hagan). He knows that Seren is the one and that she is bound to be her son’s mate. She will stay in the village, learn under the men he leaves behind in the village, and then be brought to his village at the age of 12. She will continue her training there along with bonding with his son.

Meanwhile, Hagan gets to live a pretty carefree life. He gets to be a child. He will some day take over for his father, so he does have training to complete on a regular basis, but overall he can live a carefree existence. One day a girl and her mother are found wandering, scared and starved in the woods. He is immediately enamored with the girl(the future ow) Lia. She is a shifter like him, but her wolf seems to be vacant at the moment. So, he integrates her with his friends and they grow closer and closer(maybe too close). The parents are a little concerned as they know he is bonded to another, but they decide not to interfere.

So, Seren turns 12 and is shipped off to this strange village where she knows no one. Hagan is told that Seren is to be his mate, and he becomes angry. Promises Lia that nothing will change between them. Seren is greeted with hostility by or ambivalence by many in the village. The gift she gives Hagan is publicly rejected. Time and time again he and most of his friends are cruel to her. His parents talk to him but he acts like a petulant teenager who thinks he knows better.

Time goes on, there are so many things happening in the story, that I would not do it justice, so I am not even going to try. I will skip ahead. I will say that during this time Hagan does feel the bond, but he keeps fighting it. Seren also has a couple of allies, one being Veyr who is Hagan’s right hand man.

Years pass and Hagan and Seren go through a bonding ritual of sorts and end up living together in their own cottage. They take this time to get to know each other. However, they do not go “all the way” which would ensure and strengthen their bond making unbreakable. Hagan and Seren are getting along beautifully. Things start looking up for our couple. Then trouble hits the village. He has to go train more and go out on patrols. And one of his lovely training partners is Lia, his friend who happens to be a girl.. He spends more and more time away, having dinners with Lia, while Seren waits. Then one day, Seren goes to seek him out and catches him and Lia in a compromising position. It is then that Seren lets the whole village know what she thinks of them. She has a secret, one that leaves her bond with Hagan hanging by a thread. She leaves the village and disappears into the city.

She stays gone for 2 years, forging new friendships. She becomes stronger and stronger. Hagan shows up one day as he had been looking for her. Now, the tables have turned. He is looking for her affection, and she is wary of it. Then trouble strikes and they both return to the village.

They will face off the evil, that has been threatening since the prophecy. The good triumph over evil and our couple can finally be what they were meant to be. The author gives us an epilogue, which was started with the prologue(i love that circling back). Now, that the author has opened this world up to us I can’t wait to read about the interesting characters she has created for future books. When you read this, and I hope you do, you will be surprised that there are some characters you hope get their own happy ending, even though you spent many chapters disliking them.

For a rejected mates, shifter romance, this was top tier. It had a solid plot line that worked with the relationship building. It had everything I loved about rejected mates: bullying and absolutely terrible behavior from the idiot MMC (he was a preteen/teen at this point so it worked), other woman drama, and perfect groveling.

I need to really shout that while the plot is fantastic and the relationships (not just between our MCs, Hagan and Seren, but with everyone) are nigh on perfection. The formatting and the editing overall in the ebook are not at the same level. There were time jumps that didn't make sense, chapters that were listed as being in one characters POV but were actually not, chapters that had no POV listed at all, punctuation and spelling issues, etc. It would have helped immensely to go through another round of editing.

That all being said, I cannot express how much I enjoyed this book. The fact that I was able to read almost 700 pages without getting even close to bored through any of it should say a lot. The world building wasn't very detailed, and at times it was confusing between all the tribes and species, but it managed to work for me.

Overall, is this a perfect book? No, but it was perfect for what I was looking for. The groveling wasn't overt, which is what I like. Hagan was a kid when he was at his shittiest behavior and I think a lot of the issues fell to his parents and how they either didn't notice the bullying and shunning, or they ignored it. Yes, Hagan could have done better but he was a kid who had a betrothal dumped on him days before his to-be mate showed up. All that to say that he was also being influenced by magic and had little control over his actions. But when he was in control, he was good. So with his groveling also being more of courting behavior worked for me, and apparently it worked for Seren.

I love this. I will definitely be continuing to read more from Raegan Salander.

Summary:
Prop1hesy has stated that the FMC and MMC are fated mates. She is made to live at his pack at 12 years old. However, the MMC has a chosen mate. He does not heed the warnings, and this leads to many unnecessary situations. Finally, the FMC has had enough, and she leaves the pack weakening their mate bond. The MMC wants her back and spends years searching for her. Once he finds her, he will have to get to know the woman she has become and find a way to win her heart. Through in some evil intentions by side characters and you end up with a HEA.

Review:
I enjoyed this book. There are times when I find that shifter romances lack depth---this romance has depth and a great story. You are made to root for the FMC and honestly, you aren't sure you want her with the MMC. As secrets are revealed you are amazed that you didn't see them coming. All in all, it was a great read.

Wow!! Whole New World!!

What a surprise. I only meant to read a few chapters, but I ended up devouring the whole book in one sitting. Talk about a book hangover.

This book pulls you into a dark, emotionally addictive world that feels like stepping into a fairytale--but one with sharp edges, shadowy forests, and dangerous secrets lurking just beneath the surface.

One of the highlights for me was the cast of characters. Each one was complex and unforgettable. Seren, in particular, stood out as a strong and resilient heroine. Hagan, who was flawed and more times than not conflicted, won me over by the end. In my opinion, his redemption with Seren was hard won. By the end of the story, he turned from villain to hero.

This was overall a beautiful new werewolf tale that stayed with me long after I finished the book. If you enjoy werewolf stories with dark fantasy woven with mystery, romance, and very unique characters, this is a story you won’t want to miss. A must-read if you are a fan of Reagan's books and writing style.

This should have been good…

This ended up being not as good as I expected. I thought it would be one of those epic love stories but the wannabe OW did too much damage in my opinion. And I’m not interested in her at all. She was not exactly a victim…

Seren definitely was a victim of the prophecy and this is one of those cases where the MMC, Hagen, takes a dislike to her at the early age of 12. Except he says he always loved her, which I didn’t believe for a second. He attached himself to the wannabe and that was it, until all of a sudden he changed his mind.

Seren sounded as if she was from India, maybe? She definitely sounded beautiful and she was a really nice and sweet person. She’s not a wolf but a magic creature. And she is very special.

Lia is the wannabe and she’s so mean that I heartily disliked her. She was pretty on the outside but a liar and mean girl on the inside. I never forgave her for her behavior.

Lots going on but it was still an average read. I liked it okay, but it wasn’t special.

KU read.

Could use a bit of refining with an editor, could be 5⭐️

This is definitely one of those books that you shouldn’t judge by its cover, because… I’m sorry, but that cover is not visually appealing.

Fantastic and unique world with an interesting magic system. The main characters were pretty fleshed out, but could be brought forth a bit more with some careful editing. I could do with a little less time spent on meal prep and a little more time on learning about the MMC.

I really enjoyed the story - rejected mate - with some similarities to Clayton (The Wildflower Series) by Rachelle Mills in the beginning. No worries though, it branches off pretty quickly. The writing is pretty solid, though it could be a bit clunky at times with continuity issues. It dragged a bit around the 60% mark. I get it, the author needed to establish some growth and set up a good grovel, but there were those continuity issues and the story got a bit lost. Again, a good editor would be a tremendous benefit.

Overall, I loved the story and would absolutely read this author again.

3.5* for a new take on the 'rejected mate' story. While some of the protagonists in this story are shapeshifting wolves, and the world involves witches and other shapeshifters this is not the same old shifter story. While the main theme and many of the tropes of the story are familiar, they are set in a unique post-apocalyptic world that includes both primitive living and modern technology. The origins of this world is not described in detail but the history that is revealed works for the story. One of the most original aspects of this story is the combination of belief systems: while our heroine summons a Hindu Goddess of the moon, the hero's people follow old Norse traditions.
Characters were well drawn on the whole with strong women and found family, and the emotional arc was satisfactory - though the timing on the emotional beats needed some work (IMO). I will definitely check out the next book in the series.

Did i wanna punch Hagan in the face for about 60% of the time in the book? Hell, yes. Did he turn it around a little? It could have been more. The way i adored Seren, she was my sweet baby. My heart literally hurt for her. But she came back swinging, and I was here for it. I really enjoyed a world with different magical creatures and aspects to it. It made this rejected mate book intriguing and keep me hooked until about 15/20% of the book in the end. In the second half of the book, the scenery changes, and we see Seren go on a finding herself journey, I was a bit confused about the turn about, but honestly, I wasn't mad about it. The downside for me was that the formating could have been better, and the way the ending happened, it felt rushed for me. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the next one in the series. Hopefully, Ana and Veyr

Fantastic story, can’t wait for the next in this series

Raegan Salander is my new favorite author. I stumbled upon her books a few weeks ago, and I am so thankful for that. Her stories are filled with the kind of imagination and wonder that stay with you long after you’ve read the last word. I have a terrible book hangover after this incredible story, and I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time. Raegan Salander has an incredible gift, and I am so happy she shares it with us.

This was a bit long winded and anti climactic but it was an interesting read.

The world building is Norse based but set in present times.

The main characters are 8 when this story begins, so it was a bit of a journey to get to the interesting parts where things were happening. Not sure all the ages between 8 to 12 really added anything to the story. It has angst, betrayal, grovel and redemption.

Liked it.

I loved some parts and was meh on others, but I kept reading. The only part I didn't understand is how he ignored her and their growing bond, especially as it was his father putting extra duties on him. I'm not sure I liked the Seren that worked at the bar, but it did give her new friends. I can't believe I'm saying this but I want books for Lia and other side characters.

Pride & Tears

What a gift. To Raegan Salander: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This book is a gift to all females, young and old. Seren, from girl to woman, teaches us strength, resilience, pride of and RESPECT for self and lastly, and most importantly, love for self. Love strong enough to live and to forgive.

Wow!

What a great story about fated mates! Serenity and Hagan are destined for each other since birth. There are so many twists and turns and yet, If oh d myself rooting for both of them. Even though the story is lengthy, it doesn't feel like it at all. I would highly recommend this awesome book!

dnf @ 53%. Basically when she left. Felt a bit too dramatic, the characters were too young, the world was too big and a lot of the decisions didn't make sense/felt out of character. I skipped over and read the epilogue, didn't make much sense 😑

Haven’t finished yet but it’s a struggle because the formatting is all over the show.

Ok re-evaluating - this would easily be a 4-5 star book if it had an editor. The first several chapters are a mess and hard to figure out, but once you get into the actual plot, it’s so so good.

I don’t care for Lia, but can’t wait for Ana and Veyr’s story!
