A broken soul. A possessive stranger. The chance to be found…or ruined

When Ever and her only friend are abducted to a magical realm, her worst nightmares once again rise like a dark wave in her mind. Quickly proven right, the pair are imprisoned by the realm’s brutal leader, who is determined to tear stolen magic from them—alive or dead.

Still reeling from a violent extraction attempt, Ever is snuck from her cell by Elivander—the brooding guard she is both drawn to and unsettled by. But her hopes of freedom, and the chance to save her friend, are shattered when she merely trades one prison for another.

Despite her growing curiosity toward Elivander, Ever remains uncertain of how much she can really trust him. The more time they spend together, the more she craves his touch…but what hides in the shadows of his heart?

❥ My Thoughts ❥

This adult dark romance fantasy novel was really amazing and addictive! I could not put this book down! I really loved all the elements this book came with, the characters, the storyline and the mystery of it all! It was tense, dark, emotional, hopeful, adventurous along with a splash of humor! It is a medium paced read with a lot of spice to it. The spice is not too much, but just the right amount. It is both plot and character driven, contains lovable characters and captured my attention at the very beginning! This was an intense ride that I didn’t want to get off of! It comes with a morally grey male main character, a sassy female main character and a slow burn romance! I really loved the magical realm this book came with as well! Some of the themes in this book include redemption, trust and betrayal, and loss and finding!

❥ Quick Synopsis & Rating ❥

“Betrayals of the Broken” is about a young woman that has a troubled past, ends up being abducted into a magical realm and imprisoned. As the story unfolds, she becomes a part of a new captivity and must decide who to trust! Overall, I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating!

This is my top ARC read of the year! Eli’s obsession with Ever is catastrophic and filthy. Their witty and playful banter had me giggling like an idiot in public. I also loved their emotional connection and draw to one another because of their dark & twisted nature. I hope to see more information about the visions in book two!

The various plot twists at the end caught me by surprise - I couldn’t read fast enough and was yelling at my kindle! I’m reeling for book two with that ending 😳. Wtffff! I loved this from start to finish. I will be reading the second book as soon as it’s available 🤯.

Dnf at 70%.

I genuinely don’t know what I have been reading for the past couple of days. I don’t think I could even describe what the plot is because it was just all over the place and to be honest really stupid.

I was lucky enough to be an alpha reader, a beta reader, and an early ARC reader for Betrayals of the Broken… and let me tell you—I can’t wait to read it again. This book was incredible!!

I laughed. I gasped. I had to stop reading at times just to yell at the author. It’s dark, so definitely check your triggers! The storytelling, the secrets, The BANTER and one of the most amazing FMCs I’ve ever met. The MMC was broody and grumpy and completely obsessed. The enemies to lovers was done perfectly.

And the SPICE? 🫠🙇🏻‍♀️

By far, my favorite book of the year. I still can’t stop thinking about it—I’m ready for book 2 👀.

3.75⭐ rounded up!

The beginning of this story started off so strong and had worlds of potential. It was still a really good story but there were moments where the world building and plot just got confusing. I wasn't really sure what was going on or maybe it was because there was too much going on all at once. I am not quite sure. However, the dark setting, the morally grey and possessive MMC, and their banter kept me reading entertained and intrigued.

What to Expect
Prisoner/Guard
Possessive MMC
Slow-Burn
Touch her and die
Enemies to lovers
Morally Grey Characters
Defiant FMC
Forced Proximity

In the beginning of this book, our FMC Ever, is abducted to a magical realm. Being accused of stealing magic she is held prisoner and assigned her guard Elivander. One-night Elivander helps her escape only to be taken from one prison to another. One of my favorite characters in this whole story is actually one of the side characters, Milo. He brings just the right amount of humor to this dark fantasy, and he instantly became one of my favorites. I can't wait for the next book and to see how this series and the characters develop.

This book gave me the giver vibes so many times while reading it. The character development is great along with the political intrigue. The author was able to create beautiful imagery in my brain throughout the story.

THAT ENDING HAS ME NEEDING THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY.

all the right trope but the wrong vibes

Betrayals of the Broken really should’ve been my jam. It had all the tropes: enemies to lovers, “touch her and die,” the emotionally damaged but hot MMC, and plenty of steam. I went in ready to be obsessed.

But... yeah, no. Something just didn’t land.

To me the pacing seems off ... don’t get me wrong, the burn is slow but we go from “I’ve been kidnapped and locked in a cell” to thinking “actually, I’d totally bang my captor” in record time. I love smut, I love tension, but I also need a little bit of logic in my lust.

Also, the whole thing with Ever’s parents gets sprinkled in at the beginning like it’s supposed to be important, but with zero context. It felt like the book nudged me and whispered, “Hey, remember this, it’ll matter later,” but gave me nothing to care about in the moment.

To be fair, the writing’s solid, and the vibes were there. This book wasn’t bad by any means—it just didn’t hit for me. I’m still wanting book 2 so I can see where it takes Eli & Ever

Betrayals of the Broken: A Dark Fantasy Dark Romance by Jaime L. Tlax is a gritty, dark romantic fantasy about Ever and her harrowing journey after she and her only friend are abducted into a magical realm where nightmares become terrifyingly real. From the get-go they’re imprisoned by a brutal ruler intent on extracting stolen magic from them, and Ever’s world collapses into fear, survival, and the desperate need to protect what she still has left.

When Elivander, the brooding guard assigned to watch her, offers an escape that only leads to a different prison, Ever finds herself caught between hatred, distrust, and an undeniable pull toward him as danger, betrayal, and forbidden desire spiral around them. The novel blends dark romance, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers tension, morally gray characters, and fantasy worldbuilding in a way that keeps readers on edge from page one.

What struck me most about this story is how viscerally intense and unpredictable it feels: Ever is not a passive heroine waiting to be saved, she’s raw, defiant, and scarred by her past, and the way her relationship with Elivander unfolds from mistrust and captivity to curiosity, tension, and reluctant desire carries a powerful emotional charge. There’s immense tension and heat between them, a slow-burn rhythm that builds through danger, banter, and impossible circumstances, making each shared moment feel hard-won and significant. The broody, morally complex male lead and the dark, often harrowing fantasy world give the novel a haunting, addictive energy, though that darkness also means this is not a light read and comes with trigger-heavy content like violence, abduction, and emotional torment.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I’m giving Betrayals of the Broken four stars because it delivers a haunting, emotionally charged dark fantasy romance with sharp tension, slow-burn heat, and characters who are complicated, wounded, and unforgettable.

Its blend of romance and grim fantasy makes it especially appealing if you love enemies-to-lovers dynamics with high stakes and morally gray leads, though its heavy themes and occasional world-building opacity mean it’s best approached by readers ready for an intense, unpredictable ride.

This book is so bad I wish I’m illiterate.

Seriously.

Me: **unlearns English**

I excitedly requested an ARC of this book because the tropes, the blurb, and the content warnings all SPEAK to me. Everything about them screams that I’m going to love it and omygod am I so wrong!!!

This is SO awful in every way possible. I hated this so much I wish I could erase it from my head or from this world entirely 😩

The storytelling is so confusing and nothing makes sense. It is so choppy. The world building??? Horrendous. I can’t picture anything, relate to anything, or like anything. I can’t find a connection to this world at all. Nothing in the narrative makes me care.

But for a book that cannot show me something to care about, it’s also so repetitive. There’s absolutely no cohesion.

The characters are written so badly I want to set them on fire just so I don’t need to be in their heads anymore. The dialogues are equally awful.

She’s a prisoner and being tortured but was immediately HORNY for the broody guard she just met??? Girl what? There’s literally zero buildup.

She got thrown in a dank prison and she’s like oh please gimme some cock sir 🙏

Oh and the MMC? He is supposed to be all morally grey/villainous but he is just so CORNY. Eugh. He also says the same things and does the same things over and over and over and over again. What the hell. Am I stuck in a time loop?

All the “mysteries” introduced from the beginning are just really bad narrative because they when reveals were dropped, it was…meh. Like all of this confusion and dramatics for THAT?

I hated every single second of this 😐

This was an ARC I was really excited about—it had all the tropes I usually love, but something just didn’t click. The story felt a bit confusing and rough around the edges. I found myself more into the idea of it than the actual execution. That said… the cliffhanger got me. So I might pick up book two to see where it goes.

Ooh I enjoyed this one. This was such a unique world, and I was definitely invested in uncovering the truth about Ever's past and this strange new place she found herself in. Eli definitely had his issues. His actions and words were more often than not deplorable. Criminal. Unhinged. And it just worked for me. This was a scorching slow burn, and I could not get enough. What truths that were uncovered blew my mind, and I am so eager to discover the rest. I was absolutely not expecting that ending, and I was delighted about it. It's going to be so much fun to find out the consequences of that and if they match where my twisted mind hopes they are going.

Thank you to the author for selecting me to arc read this. At first I couldn’t understand what was going on until later on in part 1 to 2. And I must say I was so intrigued to finish it so quick! I really absolutely liked the story! However that cliffhanger at the end? WTF!!!!! I need answers! Like asap!!! Overall it was such a good book to read. 9/10 highly recommend!

ARC Review
Rating: ★★★★☆

“ɪ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ɴᴇᴇᴅ ᴛᴏ ʟᴏᴠᴇ ʜɪᴍ… ɪ’ʟʟ ʜᴀᴛᴇ ʜɪᴍ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏ ᴘɪᴇᴄᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴍʏ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ꜱᴏ ɪᴛ’ꜱ ɴᴇᴠᴇʀ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ʜɪᴍ.”

I went in blind—and I’m so glad I did.

This was the slowest slow burn I’ve ever read (I’m gonna need a silly, goofy romcom to emotionally recover). But wow, was it worth it.

Ever, our FMC, felt incredibly raw and real. She’s strong, stubborn, soft, and sharp all at once. When she broke down? I felt it in my chest.

The worldbuilding was deep, layered, and totally immersive—perfect for fantasy readers who love a slow unravel of secrets and magic. It’s definitely dark, but not in a “smut-every-chapter” way. It leans into emotional tension, psychological intensity, and a constant undercurrent of danger and desire.

And Eli… sigh. The morally grey MMC with layers, edge, and that delicious protective streak. He totally stole the show. Bonus points for him calling Ever “nEver” in that teasing, affectionate way that had me kicking my feet.

Tropes to love:
• Enemies ➝ Frenemies ➝ Lovers
• Guard x Prisoner (but with unexpected depth)
• Morally grey MMC (yes pls)
• Sassy, defiant FMC
• “Touch her and die” vibes
• Magic, secrets, rebellion, and yearning

Not your typical dark romance—and that’s exactly why it stands out. Emotional, tense, and hauntingly good. Already hyped for book 2!

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

This book is an amazing dark romance, super slow burn, lots of action, and an ending that left you wanting more!

This book is full of action and discovery, the main characters are Ever the FMC who has visions of death, and Elivander the MMC guard who keeps Ever captive...and who has many secrets of his own.

This book starts off with a bang, Ever and her friend are kidnapped and taken to a realm they didn't even know existed. In Ever's desperate attempts to escape, she falls right into the lap of the person who wants to hurt her the most, the leader of this strange land. Ever is kept as a prisoner, with the broody guard, Elivander, whom Ever is intrigued by. Elivander kidnaps Ever from her current prison cell, and she hopes this means freedom, but he has created his own personal prison cell to keep her in...so her hate...and desire? for Elivander only festers.

I like that both Ever and Elivander are dark characters, each battling with their own demons inside their minds, every day. You will read of each of their pasts, and neither had the greatest upbringing. You also get to read of this new and cruel land that Ever finds herself in, a land that has magic, something Ever finds hard to believe. The blurb is very high level, so I don't want to mention much in this review, or give anything away, but this story is amazing, you will not want to put it down.

I love Elivander's nickname for Ever, he calls her "Never." I love that Ever truly never gives up trying to escape her captivity. Elivander, while technically the "bad" guy, immediately draws your attention, and makes you want to know what is really going on with what he is doing with Ever. This is a slooowww burn, in both spice, and secrets being revealed. The reader has to wait until close to the end to learn a lot of the true atrocities that are going on, as well as some of the secrets of the characters. But, this makes you want to keep reading the story even more, just waiting to see what secret or torturous event will occur with each new chapter.

Some fave quotes: !Warning, quotes may contain some spoilers!

"To anyone who questions the stability of their own mind-Sanity is optional. To anyone who seeks escape-Find yourself a broody, possessive guard...and reconsider."

"The room is as much a prison as my mind, plagued with visions of death. Every day. Over and Over."

"That's it. I am going to lose it. All the years of faking sanity will be for nothing when I'm found slumped against the wall with a melted brain."

"Even though I face death every day, I still want to run from it."

""Your mouth is as filthy as the rest of you." The deep growl of his voice makes the prickle return to the back of my neck, like cold fingers tracing down it."

""I expect you to behave, little prisoner.""

"...he's the only one who doesn't terrify me. And the way he riles me up, spurs the fight in me, the way his fingers press so hard into my neck...the way he decides if I take another breath-it has me panting in his grasp, my core aching."

"He's dead serious. And completely f***ing mad. And so gorgeous. It's a terribly intoxicating combination."

""I wish I could, but you're a little nightmare that I can't escape-your hair smells like old blood and you're covered in mud, and somehow I want to throw you down, mark you all over and add to the f***ing mess.""

"I've been a walking disaster for years. Nothing quiets the thoughts or dulls the memories. Every day I wished for death, its permanence-until her."

"His eyes meet mine. "Only I get to control you.""

""F*** Never." His throaty voice rumbles through me. "Stop me before I f***ing devour you.""

"It's something dangerously infectious...yet irresistible. Something that wakes up inside me when we're near, something that strums to life amidst all the death in my head."

"...how can I run from someone who feeds the dark spots on my soul and lures out the fight in me that I let lie dormant?"

"I can't lose her. She's my Never Ever, my f***ing addiction until the end of time."

Thank you so much to the author for a copy of this book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely stunning, dark, and unforgettable.

Betrayals of the Broken completely consumed me from the first page. Jaime L. Tlax has crafted a brutally beautiful world full of shadows, secrets, and a kind of magic I’ve never encountered before. It’s unique, daring, and utterly immersive.

This isn’t your typical fantasy. It’s sharp-edged and emotionally raw, with layers of betrayal, sacrifice, and morally gray decisions that will keep you questioning everyone’s motives—including the main characters. And speaking of characters—wow. They’re complex, compelling, and painfully real in their flaws and desires. I was hooked on their arcs and emotionally wrecked by the time I turned the final page.

The dark romance woven into the plot is intense and magnetic, perfectly complementing the gritty world-building and the haunting magic system. That said, this story does explore some very heavy themes, so I highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before diving in. Tlax doesn’t shy away from difficult content, but it’s handled with care and intention.

And the ending? Let’s just say I’m not okay. I’m still in cliffhangover recovery.

If you’re looking for a dark fantasy that dares to be different—with emotional depth, fascinating lore, and characters you’ll never forget—Betrayals of the Broken belongs on your TBR immediately.

Choosing to not give a rating for this one yet.

First and foremost, want to give a huge thank you to the author for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book, however, was, sadly, not for me. We’re immediately thrown into chaos from the first chapter. Our FMC, Ever, is confusing and she randomly has these gruesome visions of death, but they’re not premonitions, she just randomly will she herself or someone she loves dying a horrific death - it makes no sense. 300 pages in and I still don’t understand the visions or the plot.

The romance between Ever and Elivander is basically insta-lust - no romance at all - and the writing is very disjointed. Elivander is not swoon-worthy, in fact he’s mostly a cocky a-hole and is her guard keeping her behind bars and in chains. Im chosing to DNF at 70%, I still dont really know why Ever is a prisoner! The story is confusing at best

First, I would like to say thank you to Jaime L. Tlax for the opportunity to be an ARC for this amazing book. This was my first ARC book, and I am so happy I get to help promote this book to others. I look forward to reading more books from you!

I loved this book! I was captivated from the start. I did not want to put it down. The book had a great storyline, and the world building was fascinating. The relationship between Ever and Eli was perfect. Their banter and the constant lingering spice between them that only grows stronger as the book goes on is riveting.

The books cliffhanger ending left me begging for more! I feel like we can expect more good things from Jaime L. Tlax. Thank you from an avid reader anxiously awaiting your next book.

Firstly, I want to say a massive thank you to Jaime for sending me an ARC of Betrayals of the Broken - I am beyond grateful (and absolutely wrecked in the best way possible)

I devoured this book in 5 days. You know that feeling when you flip to the acknowledgements page and feel personally attacked because the story just ended? yeah, i felt that! Jaime did that. (how could you do that to us?!)  What a wonderful way to finish book one, it makes me super excited to read book two! I could not have guessed that final chapter and the way it came out was very well done. I could feel the emotions of the characters involved.

Jaime nailed the characters, and even the side characters felt fleshed out and real (special shout out to Milo). I also really enjoyed how the world unfolds organically. No info-dumping on lore or magical systems but we got enough to know what is happening while still leaving us wanting more. It's very clear that we have only scratched the surface of that lore and our characters.

Her writing style is so raw and poetic. "I get the feeling nature has me in it's grasp, that I'm wrapped up in a giant satiny petal that will wilt and shrivel before the day is done" - how pretty?!

I really enjoyed this one, I usually stay away from dark-romance but this was perfect for me to dip my toes into.

Thank-you to the author for an ARC copy of this amazing book

This book had me wanting to know more right from the first paragraph. I loved the characters and their background. I had goosebumps at parts, and totally captivated with wanting to know how the story continued.

I already can’t wait to find out what happens in Book 2.

I was honored to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book and this is my honest review.

I truly loved this story. It had everything a good romantasy needs: slow burn, great banter, cool magic system, enemies to lovers, and big twists that keep you wanting more! My only complaint is that I have to wait for the second book to find out what happens next!!

This was my first ARC, and now have more to read. Thank you, Jamie L. Tlax, you have the start of a great series!

This book was not what I expected… it had unexpected twists and turns, magic, fantasy, very slow burn (and I am used to keep it coming hot an heavy 😎) The banter between Eli and Ever “Never” is hilarious!! “I expect you to behave, little prisoner.” Honestly, the sassy banter between the two of them kept me reading.

The way the world was described was beautifully executed! I loved the way the author took you into wherever the scene was and left you feeling like you were standing there. I cannot speak too much on the “magic” system because I thought it was cool, but I’ve only read a handful of books about magic.

Side note on the characters… Milo was fabulous and I hope that he has a bigger role in the next book.

Okay. What the fuck just happened? Oh my god. I am NOT okay.

This book started off so fucking confusing. Like, zero hand-holding. You’re just thrown straight into the chaos. There’s no setup, no warm-up, you’re just there. And it’s thrilling, but also?? I had no idea what the hell was going on. But in the best way. Like I was so completely lost but also completely obsessed with needing to know what the fuck was happening. I couldn’t stop. I physically could not stop reading. I was confused as hell, but I needed answers, and the book was like, “LOL, wait for it.”

I swear I thought I had this story figured out. I was like, “Yep, I see where this is going.” LOL NOPE. I was so wrong. Every single time I thought we were wrapping something up, BAM another twist. It’s insane. Like every damn twist was perfectly placed and hurt so good. I lost count of how many times I said “WHAT?!” out loud. I think I broke my own brain.

The writing? Impeccable. I literally have zero complaints there. It flowed beautifully, even when I had to reread certain parts because my brain was short-circuiting (which, to be fair, happens often in fantasy and I’m used to it). But this? This is next-level. I’ve read a lot of fantasy. I’ve read a lot of dark romance. I’ve read thrillers. But I haven’t read this. This book is something else entirely. Something new. Something that messed me up and I liked it.

It’s dark. It’s twisty. It’s hot and terrifying and addicting. It’s like… dark romance meets fantasy meets psychological mindfuck thriller with a side of “you’re never going to emotionally recover from this.”

And don’t even get me started on that ending. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ENDING. Jaime. Seriously. What the fuck did you just do to me? I finished this book and stared at the wall for like ten minutes. How the hell am I supposed to wait for book two?? HOW?

Also I have to talk about Elivander. That man. That dark, twisted, morally gray, utterly destructive but impossibly magnetic man. I HATE that I love him. He ruins everything but I still want him. I need to know what he looks like. Like, fully. I need someone to do fanart immediately.

On the other hand — I have been a certified Kelter hater since chapter one. Something was always off with him. I knew it. I knew it.

Also feel the need to add that Milo was my favorite side character, boo is so sweet it made me tear up.

I read this book in TWO DAYS. I couldn’t stop. I am emotionally unwell. This book? 5 stars, easy.

I was lucky enough to read this early as an ARC but now I’m stuck in emotional purgatory until book two. Kind of mad about that…

Anyway. Read it. Suffer. Fall in love. Be confused.Be horrified. Be mad and scream at your walls. You won’t regret it.

First and foremost, I would like to say HUGE thanks to Jaime Tlax for the eARC and the privilege to be one of the first to read her debut. 🤘💚

Now, Review time...
This was a 3-3.5 ⭐ read for a majority of the book. I like the story, but there were some elements that just kept it from being a Great read. However, once we hit 75%-80%, it really picked up and bumped this to a 4 ⭐ for me.

The beginning started off strong. It gripped me. I was intrigued. But shortly thereafter, I found myself confused and a little lost. I struggled with the world-building, finding it difficult to picture the setting and conceptualize a time period. It felt like I was being led to an otherworldly setting, not of modern times. However, certain descriptions, phrases, and activities lead to the contrary. It never really ironed out so I just muddled the two and accepted it as it was. No biggie.

The middle felt dense and, at times, disorienting, but not majorly negative. Still getting accustomed to a new author and her writing style. We're giving grace. Plus, of course, there's a lot of info and plot building that can't be skimmed. So trust the process and take your time reading here. There are mysteries to behold. Plus some pretty great banter. *and spice

Now, the ending chunk. *dun dun dunnnnnnn 🫣
Here's where it really got me. Sucked me in and didn't let go until the end. The unraveling, if you will.
While much unfolds and secrets are revealed (both answers and more unanswered secrets), that first bomb drop, while suspected, was quite anticlimactic. No build up to it, just....there it is and let's move on. But, that's ok. Doesn't ruin the story or the experience because there's more action and revelation that quickly ensue, and you become engaged and addicted to every last word now. You viscerally need answers.
Then, you're hit with one helluva twist and then knocked in the head with a cliffhanger.

Overall, I enjoyed the time spent reading. I will definitely be reading book two (Please hurry, Jaime) and I would recommend this book to my Dark Fantasy girlies.

*Pros:

What is about this book:
She has a single wish: just to find her biological parents, also she has only one bestfriend. But what happens when they are kidnapped from Caldera’s forests into Sonnet’s realm? She knows just one thing, the people wish their dead, inclusively her new cold guard.

My thoughts:

The book opens in the first chapter with the detailed worldbuilding of the Caldera and the Sonnet. The author has created a rich complex fantasy realm, distinctly portraying elements such as the prison, The Ring, Elivander’s house, the gap, the hills, the lake, and many others. It is a highly immersive world, and the story open out almost cinematically because of the exhaustive of description.

Ever is a girl who enjoys drawing maps and exploring the surrounding forests with her only close friend, Kelter. At times, her behavior was frustrating, but it became clear that her actions were simply a facade a truly way to mask her true emotions. Despite the many hardships she has endured, she remains strong determined to find Kelter. In the end, however, she lets her guard down for her guardian, realizing she has developed feelings for him.

Elivander is a cold and composed guardian who keeps Ever bound to him, yet secretly watches over her by sending her letters and food. He needs her, though he does not reveal the reason until the last chapters, neither why she must stay by his side and help him.

Their relationship follows a classic “push and pull” dynamic. Initially, they despise each other, she is the captive and he is her keeper, but as they plunge into a shared journey, deeper emotions begin to appear. I’m aching to read the second book to see what trials and hardships they will face together. I really love this book, it has plot twists with secrets, hardships and a new way of loving someone.

Some of memorable moments:

"There's a crowd. I don't like crowds. Crowds mean people. People mean judging and staring and laughing and not caring. People are much worse than drowning."

"Your mouth is as filthy as the rest of you."

"I won't get tired of seeing any part of you."

"I only know I need you," he says, low and breathy.

"Why wouldn't I want you to see me when I see you?" he asks.

I have to start this off with... I was so blown away by this book?! I am speechless that this is Jaime L. Tlax's first book! I didn't expect to be as obsessed with it as I was, but from the very start? I genuinely couldn't put it down. And when I DID put it down, I was thinking about it.

Starting off with our FMC, Ever is incredibly sassy and it gave me LIFE. I loved her mouth, and I also really enjoyed that we didn't shy away from very real feelings. Is she strong? Absolutely. Does she still cry? YES. Both things can exist at the same time, and I was very pleased to see this throughout "Betrayals of the Broken." I was slightly confused by her visions, especially since it doesn't seem as though it's related to any kind of ability - that we know of. So I'm excited to see how that plays into the future of this series and if it ends up playing a bigger role, or if they are a manifestation of past trauma. Either way, it's just a minor aspect that I was confused about.

But our MMC, Eli. Oh my goodness. He easily weaseled his way into my heart and his backstory is so interesting. It's genuinely not something I've ever seen, but I LOVE his intensity. His obsessive nature with Ever and just his overall personality? Ugh, I fell in love with him. I'm really hoping it isn't TOO long until the sequel comes out, I already need more of this man in my life and to hear more about his history.

The spice was SPICY in so many ways, and I don't want to spoil too much of anything for potential readers. But it was incredibly enjoyable. Definitely a slow burn so if you enjoy that slow, agonizing wait? You've found the book for you. I found myself squealing several times while reading this, and a few times it felt like I needed cold water tossed onto me.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm sure the questions I have will be answered in the future - especially that TWIST at the end. My jaw physically dropped and I had to stare at the ceiling for awhile after finishing the book. How can it end that way?!

Thank you so, so much to the author for allowing me to read the ARC copy of your debut novel! I definitely need the sequel like... yesterday. I can't stop thinking about Eli.

Betrayals of the Broken by Jamie L Tlax
2.6⭐️⭐️⭐️ (rounded up to 3)
Spice: 4/5
Cursing: min+
Format/Source: ebook ARC from author
Genres/Tropes: fantasy, magic, touch her and die, twisty
Audience: Adult
Setting: Sonnet, Caldera
Quotes: "I'm uncrushable." - Ever
Characters: Ever, Elivander, Kelter, Centress, Kaleida, Milo, Sypher, Cam, Sola, Coen
👍 short chapters, multi POV, trauma rep, twists
👎 cursing, how many times Eli stops in the middle of making out, not enough plot, too long and slow at times

Description:
When Ever and her only friend are abducted into a magical realm, her worst nightmares once again rise like a dark wave in her mind. And Ever has seen enough to know that nightmares can easily become reality.
But her hopes of freedom and the chance to save her friend are shattered when she merely trades one prison for another.
Despite her growing curiosity toward Elivander, Ever remains uncertain of how much she can really trust him. The more time they spend together, the more she craves his touch…but what hides in the shadows of his heart?

My opinion:
Jamie pens a dark fantasy with even darker romance. The short-med length chapters and multiple POV made for an effortless read. The twists were unexpected, and some were quite shocking. I always enjoy a book that represents trauma in its true nature. I found this novel to not have much of a plot and to really be more about truly dark disturbing smut. The number of times that the main characters began making out, and Eli stopped in the middle of it was absurd and unbelievable. It was too long and slow paced at times. I also didn't care for the cursing. I would not recommend this novel unless you are just looking for slow, dark smut with very little plot.

BETRAYALS OF THE BROKEN
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

“To anyone who questions the stability of their own mind— Sanity is optional.”

“You think I don’t know how to take care of what’s mine?”

“Done rubbing yourself all over me like a feral animal?”

“I do as I fucking please. If I want your panties, they’re mine.”

“I wish I could, but you’re a little nightmare that I can’t escape—your hair smells like old blood and you’re covered in mud, and somehow I want to throw you down, mark you all over and add to the fucking mess.”

“I want to split her open and patch every hole in her fragile little heart.”

“You sick beautiful fuck.”

“What this little mouth does is up to me.”

Yall, this book was SO good. I loved it, truly. It kept me so hooked and when I wasn’t reading it, my mind kept wandering back to it and thinking about it and wanting to get back to reading.

Now, the tension… the freaking TENSION in this slow burn…🥵… like damn! Jaime really had me begging on my knees to release me from the torturous sexual tension between Ever and Eli! She really lets you burn so slowly you cry flames. Mix that with the epic banter between the MCs and my god, I loved them. Every time they were together in a scene I was obsessed and just wanting more, always craving more!

This is Jaime’s debut novel and I’m honestly so impressed. Her writing is so good. I highlighted a ridiculous amount of quotes, maybe the most ive ever done. Even whole paragraphs. I wish I could share them all. The writing, the words… beautiful, deep… I just loved it. It really made me feel so connected to the story and characters. And the twists after twists… damn! I need more. I need to know how the rest of this story goes, especially after that ending!

“Never. Ever. Never. Ever…”

Highly recommend this book to my dark fantasy lovers!

“My favorite fucking mistake.”

I really enjoyed this one. I went in blind and ended up glued to the page. It kicks off with tension and never really lets you breathe. There’s magic, danger, betrayal, and just the right amount of chaos to keep things interesting. The emotions run deep and the stakes keep climbing. It was dark, romantic, and a little bit brutal. Just how I like it.

Ever is exactly the kind of main character I root for. She’s guarded and angry and not afraid to burn everything down if it means protecting what’s hers. Watching her navigate heartbreak and power while trying to survive in a world that keeps knocking her down? That hit. She’s complicated and reactive and honestly, I wouldn’t have her any other way.

Elivander... listen, I didn’t know what to make of him at first, and that worked. He’s quiet, intense, and hiding so much under the surface. He’s the kind of character you want to scream at but also hope gets his redemption arc. And the slow burn between him and Ever? Deliciously frustrating in the best way.

The pacing took its time in the beginning, but it needed to. It gave space for the emotional weight to settle in before pushing forward with twists, betrayal, and a steady stream of tension. Once it found its rhythm, I couldn’t stop turning pages.

The worldbuilding leans gritty and raw. The magic isn’t flashy, it’s dangerous and hard-earned. You feel the history in every corner, and it’s clear this world has been broken long before the story started. I liked that nothing was overly explained, it let me sink into the world and trust the pieces would click, and they did.

Betrayals of the Broken is a messy, emotional ride with morally gray characters, found family vibes, and that addictive kind of tension that keeps you guessing. I’m all in for the next one.
