Henrietta ‘Henri’ Laselle lives a quiet life in Kansas City, Missouri—or so it seems. While Henri looks like the average girl next door with an animal hoarding problem. In reality, Henri is half-witch, half-alien who runs the only animal rescue in the galaxy. With a pygmy kraken in her fish tank, a talking bear who hogs the tv, and a quantum portal in her basement, life for Henri is never boring.
Until the day someone steals her pets. Someone not from this Earth. Left with no other choice, Henri leaves Earth and ventures deep into cosmos, searching for answers. A chance encounter leads her to a possible solution. Orion Worldkiller; criminal, murderer, prisoner, out-of-this-world attractive, and a giant Dragon.
Orion Worldkiller offering to help Henri find her pets is the last thing she expected, but she has no other choice. Stuck in a spaceship at the far reaches of the galaxy, Henri fights both her growing worry and her newfound feelings. The closer they get to saving her pets, the harder she falls for Orion.
When their mission goes haywire, Henri and Orion are taken prisoner and forced to compete in a deadly tournament against vicious monsters. Even worse, they’re cut off from their magic. Henri’s only hope to save her pets is to win the tournament--even if it means risking an intergalactic war.
The fight for survival—and for Henri’s heart—is on, and Dragons do not fight fair.
The Home for Wayward Creatures is an adult romantic sci-fi series from bestselling author EC Garrett that combines the magic and wonder of Men in Black with the high-stakes space adventure of Star Wars and Star Trek. Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews Innkeeper series, this 18+ story is cozy, fun, and full of laughter.
EC Garrett is an Alaskan transplant now living in Kansas City, MO. She writes fantasy/sci-fi and romantic speculative fiction.
She has her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Nevada, Reno with a focus on Early Modern and Medieval Literature, and a minor in Medieval History with a focus on the Later Roman Empire.
In her spare time, she’s either reading or watching the latest fantasy releases, riding horses at the barn, spending time with her family, or playing with her very cute but extremely onrey dachshund mix, Frankie.
The Home for Wayward Creatures was an absolute delight a warm, cozy sci-fi adventure that I fell head over heels for. The characters were superb, the found family vibes were perfection, and the animal companions completely stole my heart. (The kraken in particular was utterly adorable!)
The romance was a delicious slow burn, full of tension that had me grinning. Henri, our FMC, was everything I love in a heroine, strong, caring, and brave. And the dragon? Let’s just say he was every bit as hot and dreamy as you’re imagining.
This story wrapped me in a blanket of joy. It made me smile, warmed my heart, and left me desperate for more adventures with this cast. I’m already hoping for another book in this world. Highly recommended to anyone who loves cozy, character-driven space adventures with a dash of sizzling romance.
This book was such a cute read. Thank you, E.C. Garrett, for sending me an ARC of The Home for Wayward Creatures!
If you are looking for a cozy and silly sci-fi romance that has you giggling and hugging your pets the whole adventure, this is the one for you. Under 300 pages, this quick read took me one day to get through and held my attention the entire time, and that's saying a lot because, like the main character Henri, I also have ADHD.
The ADHD representation was so accurate, I found myself connecting to Henri immediately. An example, at one point Henri mentions that she often forgets to eat, and that couldn't be more true with me and my ADHD as well.
I also loved how Henri interacts with her creatures. They are her family, and she would do anything for them, like going all John Wick on some aliens to get her cat back. All of the creatures were hilarious and kept me chuckling throughout the entire book, especially Boris and Harold. I just wanted to crawl into the book for a Harold Hug!
This book is unlike anything she has written before; her author's note explains how she wanted to write something light and fun to break up the darkness of her usual stories and give herself essentially a "mental health palette cleanser". Go into this expecting a silly ride and a cozy story with a swoon-worthy romance.
This was a very low-spice book but, I'm hoping to learn a little more about the forked tongue Orion has in book 2 😈😂
The Home for Wayward Creatures is a new paranormal space Romantasy series about the galaxy’s only animal rescue & the woman who runs it.
THFWC has EASILY become one of my favorite books by EC Garrett. Full of adorable alien creatures, heart-felt sibling comradery, and a swoony cinnamon-roll dragon shifter, this book combines the magic and secrecy of Men in Black with the high-stakes space adventure and romance of Star Wars.
I loved everything about this book. It’s fast-paced with a cozy & entertaining vibe making it easy to devour. The romance is a delicious slow-burn, full of tension and banter that will leave you giggling and kicking your feet.
Henri, the FMC, is an easily likeable heroine with a strong and caring heart. I loved her quirky personality and connected with her character so much. (I’m also totally jealous of her job!!) Orion, the MMC, is the hot & dreamy dragon shifter that doesn’t hesitate to jump into Henri’s life to help her on her journey and protect. He is protective and oh so devoted to her from the very beginning. I loved his character from the moment he was introduced!! Book Boyfriend Achievement Unlocked!!
The creatures, of course, make this book though!! They are intelligent, adorable and have so much personality, they will leave giggling and rooting for them the whole way. I can;t wait for the next volume in this series!!
✨️Perfect if you love: ✨️ Aliens? In Kansas? Animal Companions ADHD Rep Undercover Job Cozy & Funny Slow Burn + Yearning Golden Retriever FMC Secret Powers
I chose this book because of it's amazing premise and the high rating. The premise did not disappoint, it is great! The whole story behind is awesome I would so love to read a whole series about this. The big problem I had was, that it feels like it is written by an AI. The idioms do not work, for instance "But it's the man standing at his side that is the final needle on the haystack of my windling patience". Should be straw on the camel's back I guess?
There are severe timeline issues, that would only make sense if an AI wrote this. Example: Henri wakes up after 12h of sleep, eats pancakes, finds out she is filthy because she forgot to shower the evening before so she goes and showers. In the shower she is so tired that she cannot hold her eyes open and goes back to sleep. That can happen if there is a reason for extreme exhaustion but this reads more like someone does not understand how time works.
Third example: The spaceship needs to be made invisible. Henri uses magic so the scanners cannot detect it at all. A few lines later: The scanners scan the ship and let it pass. 2 pages later, the ship's invisibility cloak gets switched on. So, what is it?
There also is a scene in space that makes very clear that the most basic physics are not being considered. I am not quoting these as they would be spoilers.
The examples go on and on, these are only the most glaring ones.
Overall: 1 star for the really bad writing, 1 bonus star for the adorable idea.
The Home for Wayward Creatures is a cute and cozy sci-fi romance with space adventures, interactions with aliens/intergalactic creatures, and found family.
Henri runs an animal shelter for alien (wayward) creatures. When someone breaks into her home and steals a few of her aliens, she’s determined to get them back even if that means going on a space adventure with a dragon shifter she just met.
Overall, I thought this was a fun and quick read! It’s pretty fast-paced and the storyline is super easy to understand and enjoy. There is insta-love romance and strangers to lovers, but little spice (I think this last part may change in future books!!). I enjoyed getting to know all of Henri’s creatures and the many ways E.C. incorporated herself into this book.
I really loved Henri and Orion. Orion is basically the Tony Stark of space, but add dragon. He’s suave, cocky, but has true intentions and access to lots of fun (and expensive) gadgets. Orion does have a bit of an interesting past that was super fun to lean into! From the moment he met Henri, I was eagerly anticipating something spicy!
I really enjoyed THFWC and highly recommend checking it out! If you’re looking for a fantasy sci-fi read with zany space adventures, this one is for you.
This is so different from anything I've read and I absolutely loved it. It's a cute mix of sci-fi, Rom-Com and high stakes missions, all bundled into an adventure to rescue stolen pets in space! Alongside the slow burn romance is lots of yearning, and a protective he falls first energy. I loved all the tension, and seeing Henri's hilarious pov and frantic internal thoughts, and all her passion, fury, confusion and lust. Orien is powerful, intense, charming and so flirtatious, and I loved seeing him rile up Henri and tease her. This has it all with the humour, banter, adventure, building romance, mystery and dangers. I love the bond Henri has with her creatures, especially Boris the Kraken who is the best sidekick, loves candy and is such a hero. And her banter with her siblings was precious. Together they all have unique and powerful abilities and are done being controlled by the UGF, and in excited to see what else Henri and her siblings are capable of. Also an animal rescue centre for alien creatures, a talking bear, and fire kittens!, you won me over in chapter two, but the rest was pure gold that I devoured. Cannot wait for more of this awesome series!
Space Romantasy High StakesAdventure Animal Companions Rescue Mission Hidden Powers Dragon Shifter Forced Proximity Age Gap He Falls First Mild Spice
I don’t usually read sci-fi or anything with too much instalove or lusty.
But this was such a fun time!!!
I really love any animals in a book especially when they’re main characters. And there is so many animals I had a blast reading about. Boris and Harold!!!
This even had a SPACE DRAGON 🥵 Orion out MMC was so hot. I can’t even with him. I can’t wait for more of it.
Henri our FMC I loved so much. I really liked the ADHD representation in this, it’s nice to see a character with real like struggles like I have. She was a fun character and for once not another 16-19 year old who’s inexperienced in their magic trying to save the world and also so stubborn you want to reach into the book and shake them.
This was such a good book, I really enjoyed it.
I definitely would have preferred a slower burn and less instalust. But it had me giggling frequently which is always a win.
I’m curious how book 2 will go.
I also thought they could have gone through this a couple more times with an editor as I noticed a few mistakes.
Solid 4.5 The Home for Wayward Creatures is a fun romanta-sci-fantasy. I enjoy cross-overs like this. Kindle shows it as 286 pages, though it didn't feel that long while reading it. Overall, a fun read. Dialogue feels natural, and matches the character's personality. Minor criticisms: the plot is a tad linear and predictable, the main characters are fun and moderately well rounded, but the secondary characters don't get very much page time (the setup for the next book suggests this may change). There are some plot / character interactions that I can't figure out if the author chose that ability for the character, then created a plot point to showcase it, or created a plot point, and needed a way to move past it (the coincidence / alignment feels contrived). Recommend for those that enjoy romanta-sci-fantasy. Disclosure: I received an advance reading copy from participation in the book's Kickstarter campaign.
OMG This was the best time ever!! I was literally dying 2 pages in and I did not want to put it down. I feel like this was Men in Black meets the antics and banter of Guardians of the Galaxy! Funniest shit I have read in a long time!
I cannot get over these animals, okay?! They are fucking hilarious! Harold……I cannot un-picture him in his little bib 😆😆!! And do not get me started on Boris!!! Like wtf!!! His little ‘vehicles’ 🤣🤣🤣! Seriously my favourite thing ever! If anyone knows me, they know I love a fun animal companion and this one took that and multiplied that by 100! I don’t think I stopped laughing throughout this whole book!
So after all the chaos of creatures (and the siblings, cause they are just as fun), we throw in a super sexy space dragon! Love Orion and I loved the tension and banter between him and Henri!
Plot was fun, animals were cute and hilarious, the banter was top notch and I seriously had the best time ever with this book!
This is the second E.C. Garrett book that I've had the privilege of advance reading.
The Home for Wayward Creatures is a delightful mix of sci-fi and fantasy. Henri, the protagonist, is half alien and half human witch and she runs an animal rescue for extraterrestrial creatures. After some alien kittens and Henri's personal pet cat are stolen in the night, she sets off on a mission to track down and rescue her animals.
Getting assistance from a shape shifting dragon and her stow-away mini kraken Boris wasn't part of her plan, but they prove remarkably helpful on the adventure.
I loved the adorable alien animals and Henri's ADHD symptoms were so relatable. I adored that the book was partially set in Kansas City (where I live).
The Home for Wayward Creatures has space travel, magic, hot dragon men and adorable alien creatures and is so much fun.
This was so cute, so funny, and so heartwarming! Henri just wants to love all creatures and keep them safe. So when she ends up flying into space to save her cats, we expect nothing less. Ending up going with a dragon wasn't on her bingo card though...especially not one that's so sexy!
While Henri makes her way across galaxies with Orion and her stowaway Boris, she realizes that there's so much more than her cats being kidnapped going on. More importantly, she learns the importance of family in a whole new way, and gets to add to it after this trip. I cannot wait for the romance between Henri and Orion to really fly!
Okay, so this book is absolutely wild in the best way. It’s like your cozy small town vibes got hit with full on intergalactic chaos. Henri’s life is anything but normal, and from the moment she’s thrown into space, it’s nonstop action, magic, and hilariously weird creatures. And then there’s Orion… yeah, he’s basically trouble wrapped in a dragon and somehow makes everything way more complicated.
The story is fun, fast, and a little chaotic, with just the right mix of romance, humor, and high stakes adventure. If you like your sci-fi with magic, quirky characters, and a dash of heart, this one’s an absolute blast.
I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this story. If you love fantasy creatures like dragons, kraken and space adventure stories, you will be delighted by this story. Henri runs an animal shelter for alien creatures left on Earth. Her cat and hellfire kittens are stolen from her home and she goes on a rescue mission with Orion, who is a dragon. Lots of hijinks ensue as Henri learns more about her own magic and finds romance along the way. This is a feel good story which will make you smile and want to snuggle any pet you may have.
This book is FUN! As the adult of the little girl that dreamed of waking up to find a Pegasus in her backyard, this is the PERFECT book to make me happy! Plus it's fast paced, funny, sweet and very engaging! I'm a huge fan of EC Garrett so I would've sought this out anyway, but I appreciate the gifted arc. If you're looking for a fun fantasy, that's still adult for sure, but gives you hell kittens and dragons, look no further! The Home for Wayward Creatures is the fantasy book Island of Misfit toys and EXTREMELY well written! All the stars!!!
A low spice but cozy and humorous space romance. I loved everything about this book from the relatable characters to the animals and all the space creatures! I drank this book up and it felt like it was flossing my brain learning about all the space creatures and their personalities, their habitats, and the food they eat! It was like a mix of Pokémon and Fantastic Beats and I have never read anything like it! I am definitely looking forward to more space adventures with the characters and their space creatures. I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC but this is my honest review.
What a great cozy sci-fi read! There was plenty of interesting world building - the magic, the planets, the tech. Nothing was too hard to understand or felt out of place. And then, the stars of the show, the creatures. I got such a kick out of meeting all of them - the kraken, the cats, the bear, the chickens, etc. Its the characters - three siblings, a dragon man, and plenty of extraterrestrials - that really make this story shine. I’m really glad I backed this KS and I can’t wait to read the next one.
Loved this! EC Garrett is an autobuy author for me and this one did not let me down. This book features an FMC, Henri, who has a sanctuary on Earth for space creatures, and these space creatures for the most part look like normal ones. Think Men In Black, but with cats, dogs and farm animals. When Henri's cats get stolen, she is off on a mission to another planet to try to hunt them down, with the help of her mini bracken.
This book has adventure, fun creatures, a broody MMC, interesting family dynamics and space. It's perfect for animal lovers.
This is a really cute, cuddly story, which is really well written - as is standard with EC Garett. This is definitely one of her lighter stories, with talking animals & a soft FMC, loving family & a sweet love story. This is a relatively short standalone story - perfect for a pallet cleanser or a change from darker reads (as in my case) Or this is perfect introduction to fantasy for a young adult
This book was wonderfully cozy, funny, and heartwarming. Just what I needed as a pick me up after a dark read.
Henri is a lovable FMC, and her supporting cast of creatures and friends and family are fabulous. Her meeting with Orion and subsequent adventure with him was excellent.
Looking forward to continuing the adventure!
I received an ARC of this book as part of a Kickstarter campaign. This is my honest review.
The Home for Wayward Creatures by EC Garrett is a cozy and fun sci fi adventure! This was a really quick read and the vibes were perfect! If you love animals, sci-fi, and some rom com, definitely pick this book up! Henri runs a rescue for creatures of the galaxy who need a safe place. When some of her creatures and beloved cat Derek are stolen, she embarks on a galactic journey to find them. She enlists the help of her brother and sister, as well as Orion Worldkiller, who she encounters by chance. They encounter several issues along the way and we learn more about Henri and her powers. WILL SHE BE ABLE TO SAVE PRECIOUS DEREK?? Truly, I was on edge the whole book. I was so worried about Derek and was ready to riot if anything happened to him. I did become obsessed with every single creature of the cast, though.
Now, let's be honest here, EC Garrett is probably my favourite author on the entire planet, or at least like my top 5!!! Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader for Henri and her creatures 💕💕 🐙🐙 I heart you Boris 🫶🏻
This book was absolutely incredible and a piece of art shw can be proud of - to be fair though she could write my grocery list and I would read it
This was a great cozy, funny, heartwarming read. I was already smiling and giggling in the first few pages and knew I was going to love it. Great for animal lovers, those who enjoy romantasy and there’s a fun spacey/Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it. Fun characters and I honestly just want more more more! Looking forward to book 2, whenever we get it!
THFWC is exactly what it says it is. A hilarious and cozy sci fi paranormal fantasy with a splash of romance. I love the found family trope and Henri with her wayward creatures filled that trope! You don’t mess with Henri's creatures or family!
I'm in a delightful sweet read hangover. I'm ready for Volume 2!
This book is adorable, fun, unique, heartwarming, and all of the other good adjectives! Being on Henri's journey with her was a delight. I'm obsessed with all the alien creatures, especially the hellkittens. Who doesn't want little furry friends that sneeze fire??
The Home for Wayward Creatures was an absolute delight from start to finish. It gave all the warm fuzzy vibes you could ask for in a sci-fi romantasy. I loved Henri’s character and her connection to all of her creatures. This story was a great read all the way through and I can’t wait for the next one!
EC Garrett has a way of making this book a fun and easy read! If you love your creatures and your family and love some quick romance—sweep you off your feet MMC who lives to take care of his FMC—you will LOVE this book! EC has written some fun and amazing fantasy books and I love seeing what comes from her creative genius!

It didn't hook me right away and I tried to hang on b/c of the glowing reviews. When I finally got to the MMC I still wasn't feeling it and I felt like I was just trudging thru. The writing is fine and the characters are ok. I just don't seem to be vibing with it.
A very cute and fun adventure read. At no point could I guess what was coming next because it was also wild and different. So much fun to read and definitely quite humorous. The romance was soft and sweet with a few steamy scenes. I definitely can't wait for the next!
