I was a big fan of the original Unbelievable Gwenpool series, which was far better than it had any right to be, so whenever Gwenpool shows back up again, I'm there like a shot to keep track of what she's up to.
This mini-series brings her into conflict with a brand new Eviiiiiiil version of herself, which puts her reality-warping powers to the test, as well as her understanding of comics lore as she tries to puzzle out where this new foe has come from, and how to stop the man behind the curtain.
The fourth wall breaks are cleverly done here, and the banter is top notch even when it's not all continuity references and silliness. The overall conclusion is just as daft as I'd hoped it'd be, going full Animal Man (IYKYK), and it even ends on a semi-cliffhanger with a shift in status quo for Gwen and friends that might be picked up elsewhere.
The artwork from Stefano Nesi, who I've only ever seen on DC's Knight Terrors, does the job well. He's like a less refined Giuseppe Camuncoli, you can definitely see his influence in some of the bigger pages, and especially in Nesi's depiction of Spider-Man.
Good stuff. Not quite as fun as the original book, but a great entry into the Gwenpool canon that I think she'd approve of.
Gwenpool, a character that usually defies all explanation, is targeted by...Weapon X(?) and its newest recruit Gwen Stacy(?). West Coast Avengers cameos aplenty (if you like Jeff the Landshark and Hawkeye). ======= I don't know if you can do too much with this character if you don't kick the meta stuff to the curb and ground her for a bit. They had to do it for Deadpool. Pull back from the 4th wall breaks and just tell some good stories. ---- Bonus: A meta character has a meta miniseries that go.es as far as Deadpool has reached.
Honestly a shame …I loved the original series for Gwenpool. This had zero redemption in my eyes. It might as well been written by a three-year-old and holds none of the original wonder of the comics.
