Join Author and guide Mindie Burgoyne as she takes a chilling journey through the haunted history and lore of Ocean City and Berlin. A ghostly sea captain, an ill-fated lover and jazz musicians who go on playing long after their last songs--these are the spirits that make their presence known from Ocean City's Boardwalk to the picturesque town square of Berlin. The phantom scent of a woman's perfume floats from Trimper's carousel while the Ocean City Life-Saving Station is haunted by the ghost of a drowned sailor. In Berlin, some guests never check out of the Atlantic Hotel, and strange happenings have been reported at the Rackliffe House, where legend has it that a cruel plantation owner was murdered by his slaves.

I bought this book after going on a ghost tour of Berlin led by the author of the book and owner of Chesapeake Ghost Tours. The book was fascinating, The author created a great balance between documented historical events and intriguing stories from the residents of Ocean City and Berlin, who had ghostly encounters. I really enjoyed her conversational tone. It was like being on the tour again and feeling a sense of the town's ethereal spirits around you. The subject matter was far ranging. Not only was there the expected topics like architecture, cemeteries, murder, elementals, and shipwrecks, but also a haunted carousel, healing tree, sand castles and the origins of salt water taffy.
I just thought it would be more haunting and less history. I think this book only works if you are already positive that you believe that ghosts exist. And she said she didn't want to investigate the scariest one. I was like "mannnn, why am I reading this?" Buuut, if you get this book seeing it as a history lesson or just fun facts about Ocean City then it is definitely worth the read, because it is a fast fun read that endeared me more to the bookshop I bought it from in beautiful Berlin Maryland.
I loved this book! I’ve lived in this area my whole life and hadn’t heard most of these stories before. I kept finding myself looking up the different locations and realizing that I had been there before or at least recognized the spot. I loved learning so much about the history of the area and I hope I can go on one of the ghost tours!
Yada yada'd over some of the dramatic stuff, but I'm on board for the idea that ghosts return to where they're happy, and you know I LOVE history through the lens of GHOSTS.
It is a history book about the two cities as well as a ghost tour. Now I want to go back there and check all the location and take a ghost tour. Fascinating book
