Since 1991, Suzanne Collins has been busy writing for children’s television. She has worked on the staffs of several Nickelodeon shows, including the Emmy-nominated hit Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. For preschool viewers, she penned multiple stories for the Emmy-nominated Little Bear and Oswald. She also co-wrote the critically acclaimed Rankin/Bass Christmas special, Santa, Baby! Most recently she was the Head Writer for Scholastic Entertainment’s Clifford’s Puppy Days.
While working on a Kids WB show called Generation O! she met children’s author James Proimos, who talked her into giving children’s books a try.
Thinking one day about Alice in Wonderland, she was struck by how pastoral the setting must seem to kids who, like her own, lived in urban surroundings. In New York City, you’re much more likely to fall down a manhole than a rabbit hole and, if you do, you’re not going to find a tea party. What you might find...? Well, that’s the story of Gregor the Overlander, the first book in her five-part series, The Underland Chronicles. Suzanne also has a rhyming picture book illustrated by Mike Lester entitled When Charlie McButton Lost Power.
She currently lives in Connecticut with her family and a pair of feral kittens they adopted from their backyard.
The books she is most successful for in teenage eyes are The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. These books have won several awards, including the GA Peach Award.
I honestly think this book was one of the best Hunger Games books (SOTR) ever. Even though it was shorter than Songbirds and Snakes, we finally understood a lot of things about Haymitch. Why he drinks or calls Katniss "sweetheart". Also all the trauma in this book explains so much about Haymitch. And all those little teasers and hints about if Lucy Gray was related to "someone" in here left me speechless. This book did make me cry because you'll love Haymitch even more and make you believe more that he didn't deserve this. Connecting the dots was so fun and I would definitely recommend this book to others.
Songbirds and Snakes was also one of Suzanne's best works. Understanding how Snow became the selfish, cunning and ruthless person nowadays is unbelievable. The way he first despises the games in the beginning, and how she slowly made Snow realize they "needed" these games was crazy. And the friendships here were definitely needed to shape who Snow is now (or was). And the way we can only see what's happening through Snow's POV through the screen is crazy, unlike Katniss actually in the games, left me almost skipping to the next page for the suspense to end. And the way Snow was driven for love until he wanted power, and chose it over everyone else. This was definitely a fantastic (and movie) and I would definitely recommend it to others.
So I read ballad of songbirds and snakes when it first came out a year or so ago. It was amazing! I actually listened to it on an audiobook on the Libby app. I had gotten thru the whole book in half the time I had allotted for it.. so I just started at the beginning and listened again. I enjoyed it THAT much!! I’ve always wanted “Haymitch’s story” truly I hoped she would make it. She did NOT disappoint! This book was so good that it lead me to re-read the hunger games series. I loved the secondary characters! The district 12 tributes were so interesting!! Great story! I hope she makes a book in the future to show us what their dystopian world is like 20-50 years after the last hunger games! ☺️ maybe Katniss’ child’s perspective! Keep ‘em’ coming Suzanne!
Absolutely LOVED Sunrise on the Reaping! Tied in pieces from the rest of the series so well but didn’t allow the tie-ins over take the story. Lots of twists and turns, especially at the end, that kept me gasping and my jaw dropping. Truly see a deep dive into Haymitch’s character and I now have a better understanding of him and his character. Feel sorry for him but also admire him for his strength. Loved this book! Super well written!
suzanne collins cannot go wrong! the characters, the setting, the plot and the conclusion were just marvelous. i wish she could keep the series going for another five books.
