Sin Bin Stories #4

Blocked Score

Rate this book
Two summers ago I gave my heart to the hockey captain, and he broke it.

I promised myself I’d never make the same mistake again. It was an easy promise to keep while we were hundreds of miles apart—not so easy now that we’re roommates.

Lane Golden boy of college hockey. A respected leader with an upstanding reputation, Hollywood good looks, and a golden retriever personality. AKA, the exact opposite of any guy I’ve ever been with.

Rebellious type with a love for tattoos and an aversion to following the rules. AKA, the last girl anyone would expect to catch Lane's eye.

A year and a half after our summer fling ends in heartbreak, I’ve made progress trying to forget him. But when I transfer to the college he plays for, the last thing I ever expected we end up sharing the same house.

Now the guy I’ve spent eighteen months trying to forget is living in the bedroom next to mine.

It would be safe to keep my distance. Safe to resist reminiscing about the scorching summer nights we spent together. Safe to turn him down when the heating goes out in my room and he offers to share his bed.

Too bad I’ve never been good at playing it safe.

Blocked Score is a college hockey romance novel with steam, no cheating, and a guaranteed HEA ending!

This series was the first I read by Lyssa Lemire and it made me an instant fan. I've adored all of the characters that we've met in each book and Blocked Score was no different. Scarlett and Lane were super cute together and they had me rooting for them to get over the miscommunication and realize how perfect together they are. I liked that Scarlett was a bit more wild than Lane and pushed his boundaries at times, which made for some very interesting moments between them.

I will say, the miscommunication trope is not a favorite of mine but I went into this story with an open mind and I'm glad I did. I thought that part of their story was done really well and only added some intrigue and never any annoyance. At least for me. I also think the way Lane and Scarlett handled it just showed their maturity and didn't make me go crazy when they wouldn't just talk to each other. That never happened and personally I really appreciated that about their characters.

Overall, I found this to be a fun and easy read and one I can definitely see myself re-reading one day. I'm also very excited to get more from the series and I can't wait for more.

This was my very first ARC from Booksprout and wow, what a way to kick things off! Blocked Score pulled me right back into the hockey romance world and reminded me exactly why this genre is slowly becoming my Roman Empire—unstoppable, unforgettable, and absolutely obsession-worthy.

Scarlett and Lane? Whew. The insta-connection between them was chef's kiss perfection. Their chemistry jumps off the page, and the banter? So smooth and natural it felt like they’d been sparring/flirting/best-friending for years. Watching their relationship blossom during their summer in Chicago was pure joy—full of fun, heart, and sizzling moments.

Then came the heartbreak. A silly (but plot-essential) misunderstanding tears them apart, and yes, I saw it coming from a mile away, but that didn’t soften the blow one bit. Still, the slow-burn reunion? Worth. Every. Page. When they collide again after a year and a half, it’s clear that their love never cooled—it just smoldered, waiting for the right moment to reignite.

Another thing I loved? The found family vibes. Lane and his teammates are ride-or-die for each other, and the way they embrace Scarlett into the fold is downright heartwarming. I also need to talk about Sebastian and Harper because HELLO, enemies-to-lovers tension! I am already shipping them hard and crossing all my fingers for their story next.

Also: Lane. Sweet, protective, tender, swoony Lane. He’s everything you want in a book boyfriend.

Yes, there were a few tiny spelling hiccups, but honestly? Didn’t matter. I devoured this book. Lyssa Lemire has me hooked, and I’ll be first in line for whatever comes next in this series.

I feel like this book is the weakest in the series so far, purely because it is the miscommunication trope and lack of just fucking talking to one another about things they say that HINT SOMETHING WENT WRONG. Then the whole relationship suddenly gets built on a conversation followed by an intimacy scene. I want to like the characters, but the fact they were missing the one personality trait each of them needed to actually address the situation is beyond annoying.

Okay Lane and Scarlett were cute, but why did I like them better in the ‘before’ part of the book? I think I felt a little detachment after, I’m not really sure why, but for some reason I didn’t feel the same connection with the team/friendship group as in previous books, this one felt a little removed?

It was an easy and fine read, but not my fave in the series. I didn’t hate it or anything, I just feel detached? I think so much of it was so unrealistic to, and/or not really dealt with in the story (her ex was this big thing and then just like brushed over?), and my suspension of disbelief wasn’t suspending.

Miscommunication/misunderstanding is SUCH a drag of a trope that I could live without and be a satisfied romance reader always, but this was also my absolute favorite book in this series, so it didn’t drag as much. Lane and Scarlett were such fun dynamic characters, and the build up was so enjoyable and lighthearted and witty. Looking forward to the next one!

Just wrapped up the fourth book—and wow, it was hands-down my favorite so far!

Scarlett and Lane meet on a plane and spend an unforgettable summer together in Chicago. Sparks fly, feelings deepen, and they’re all in. But life gets in the way, and circumstances force them apart. Fast-forward 18 months: Scarlett switches schools… and guess who she runs into again? 👀 Both assume the other has moved on, so they bury their emotions—but not for long. That undeniable chemistry quickly reignites, and things get intense in the best kind of way.

💭 I’ve been loving second chance romances lately, and this one hit all the right notes. From the instant bond between Scarlett and Lane to the ache of their separation, I was hooked. The emotional build-up, the slow-burning tension, the secret longing… chef’s kiss. It’s a fast-paced read, but totally packed with feels. Easily one of my top summer vacation picks. 🏒💜

Go girl, give us nothing 😹 The beginning of the book was promising, but then it went downhill at about 40%. Scarlett and Lane had very surface-level personalities. I would've loved to see more about Scarlett's relationship between her and her parents, but that was barely addressed. I was more intrigued by Sebastian & Harper, two of the side characters 🤥

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️.🌶️ There’s not a trope I hate more than the misunderstanding / miscommunication trope, and if you’re reading the ebook, that same trope lasts from 22-74% exactly. That’s 52% of the book, more than half of the plot where we have to keep reading in frustration. That’s what cost this a star, if it wasn’t from the lack of simply communicating and talking to each other, it would have been a full five stars. Nevertheless, I absolutely adore the characters golden boy Lane and his feisty girlfriend Scarlett, and I thought their chemistry was sizzling even when they were just friends hanging out. I loved how we got to see all the past couples and characters hanging out and getting mentions throughout the book. I especially enjoyed seeing Scarlett finally leave her jerk ex and enjoy college because I can relate to that too. I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a college hockey romance, opposites attract, black cat x golden retriever, summer romance, the one that got away, friends to lovers, unfinished business, forced proximity, one-bed trope, and found family. Final thoughts, I’m not convinced how likable Sebastian is as a character, I’d rather get Jamie’s book next, but then I won’t get to see Harper shine so I’m definitely torn on the next installment of this book. Also, since we’re heading to the playoffs this 24-25 season, I just have to say how unrealistic it was to be excited about going to the Sharks vs going to the Habs 😂 that made me giggle as a hockey fun. I guess if we’re talking about contracts and payouts like Lane said, the Sharks would have been more, now I just need Celebrini to confirm that theory for me.

Loss of a star for the miscommunication lasting so long, as well as the trade at the end. I had to keep in mind that they were 20 when this happened. Overall, it was 🔥!

It was just ok. I hate a miscommunication trope more than anything. ONE conversation and it would have been resolved! Also he just asks his ex hookup to live with him during the first conversation after they broke up? Weird. Random awkward ex BF scene at the end. I feel like her ex was a creep but they did all of the work to break themselves up. I know they’re only like 20 but they made some pretty wild leaps on little to no information. I’m still reading the next book.

Scarlett and Lane

They meet on summer and hook up and kind of fall in love, but her ex-boyfriend gets a hold of her phone and send off a text insinuating that they should go their separate ways. A year and a half later they end up at the same college and she end up being his roommate since her apartment flooded. Both of them think that the other one ended the relationship so neither of them want to pursue, but they both secretly miss the other one.

Honestly, the spicy scenes weren’t very spicy and the book was kind of bland, but not read another one.
