He's the grumpy farmer stuck in a rut...she's the city girl who changes everything.
Mollie Wilson has everything she’s supposed to want—a stable job at her family's company, a fiancé, and a high rise in the heart of Nashville. But the noise, the rush, and the expectations all leave her longing for the quiet peace of her grandfather's farm, the last place she remembers being truly happy. When her family reveals that the farm wasn't sold off after all and was left in a trust for her, she's torn. They want her to sell it to fund her future, but she's starting to wonder if she'll truly be happy with a life in the city.
For ten years, Cain Smith has lived and worked on Bennie Grove Farm alone—until a stunning city girl claiming to be the owner breaks into his house and turns his quiet, controlled world upside down. He doesn't trust her, but he's sure that his surly attitude will cause her to leave, just like everyone else has. She's a distraction he doesn't need, not when he's trying to single-handedly run the farm and raise his young nephew, the only family he has left.
When trouble comes knocking at the farmhouse door, Mollie and Cain are both faced with an uncomfortable question—can they learn to rely on each other, or will they keep running from their pasts? But no matter what they choose, they know that nothing will ever be as it was again.
As It Was is a small-town, single-dad romance novel with the grumpy/sunshine and found family tropes, set in the town of Strawberry Springs. It’s the first in a series of interconnected standalone novels.
First I want to thank Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for allowing me to read the ARC of this book. I absolutely loved this book and I am so excited to be able to share it with other readers!🥹
To be honest, this is the first Elle Rivers book I've read. I read a brief description and it instantly caught my attention. And I don't regret it.
The story is fantastic, addictive, and beautiful. I loved the character development. watching Mollie become the woman she always wanted to be was very emotional. The story is very well structured. The slow-burn romance is perfect.
CAIN😩 The man you are🥹
If you want a cozy, cute book with a touch of positive vibes, this book is for you, especially for this summer. Don't hesitate to get your copy when it comes out.
Just wonderful. I absolutely adored this story, it was small town romance at its finest. With cute characters, especially Eric (his moments were so precious), a heartfelt story and so much love.
I went through so many emotions reading this book, it made me angry (on behalf of certain characters), made me laugh, made me cry and most importantly it made me so so happy.
Cain and Mollie are without a doubt the most perfect couple. I loved the slow burn, it didn’t feel dragged out like some books and I just knew the ‘fuck it’ moment was going to be a good one… and boy oh boy was it 🤫
Eric is probably the cutest kid in the world and I felt myself giggling at everything he said. He brought so much happiness to Cain and for Mollie to then come along and just easily slip into their dynamic, god I loved it.
A beautiful story with wonderful characters. Strawberry Springs, I hope to be back soon.
Thank you to Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for the ARC.

Running away might not be the answer, but staying feels impossible, so Mollie heads to the farm. She expects it to be abandoned, overgrown, and forgotten. What she doesn't expect is a grumpy, guarded farm manager to have kept most of it running in her absence. He despises her, yet the rest of the friendly town quickly makes her feel at home. Now she has to choose - return to the life she's supposed to want or risk everything for the happiness she's always dreamed of among the strawberry fields. When a stranger shows up claiming to be his nephew's biological father and threatens to take him away, he's forced to do the one thing he swore he'd never do—rely on Mollie, and the town of gossips who had never accepted him. The more time he spends with her, the harder it is to remember why he insists on pushing everyone away. But she has a whole life waiting for her back in Nashville. And despite his attempts to guard his heart, he knows that when she leaves, nothing will ever be as it was again.
Mollie is stuck in a rut. She’s started seeing red flags for what they are, no longer painting them beige, and does something about it. I absolutely admire her strength and her ability to remain so positive. Despite crap being thrown at her from all angles, Mollie simply wants to please and reignite the nostalgia of her childhood. I loved seeing her integrate with members of the town, as if she’d been there all her life. The fact that she so willingly helped Cain and Eric was just stunning. I can certainly say that Wren is lucky to have a best friend such as Mollie! Who wouldn’t want the human embodiment of sunshine by their side? Cain comes across very gruff and cold. He is the definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Especially when it comes to his nephew and ensuring his happiness. On the inside, Cain is such a teddy bear and I really liked seeing that softness. All too often nowadays, men are only seen as hard and unemotional - especially in these small town romances where they’re a cowboy, or a farmer or mechanic. But here, we get to see a man who is wounded and is dedicating his life to ensuring a future for the boy he took under his wing. Seeing him open up further with Mollie, even when hiding behind their banter, I felt so proud of him. His growth is clear to see and I couldn’t have hoped for anything better!
When I can across the opportunity to be on the ARC team for this book, I knew I needed to jump in. The synopsis just gave off such cozy vibes to me and I jumped at the chance to read this ASAP! I was so stoked to be accepted onto the ARC team that the moment I finished my current read, I was jumping into this one. This book is just brilliant from start to finish. I devoured it in only a few sittings and scarcely felt time pass. It has such wonderful cozy vibes that had me grinning like a fool. The flow drew me in and kept me captive, taking me from moment to moment. I didn’t want it to end! We get quite the cast of characters too. Being a small town, everyone knows everyone else’s business so of course we have to gossip mums, the batty older ladies, and men who think they’re hot stuff and those just happy with small town living. Rivers has done such a wonderful job crafting these individuals. They all stand on their own footing, don’t blend into the background unless the situation calls for it. It felt like I was surrounded by these people over the course of the book and I loved it! The romance was so angst yet so sweet, and coupled with the steamy spicy moments. Good lord, I was in heaven! There are a lot of emotions in this book and Rivers brings them to life brilliantly! That ending was absolute perfection for this story. I love that it sets us up for Wren’s story next, whilst still giving us closure here. I cannot wait to see what Rivers brings us next!
Overall, As It Was is the epitome of a small town romance!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Thank you again to Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for an advanced copy of this book.
As It Was is my first Elle Rivers book and I enjoyed it very much. I love grumpy/sunshine and a single dad book. Mollie and Cain were great characters and I loved their banter. Cain is a perfect book boyfriend.
As it Was is a charming, spicy small town romance that blends heart, humour, and heat in all the right ways.
When our FMC discovers her beloved grandfather left her the family farm— she doesn’t hesitate to leave behind a life (and a fiancé) that no longer fits. But returning home after a decade away comes with more than a little baggage… namely, the grumpy, annoyingly handsome man who’s been running the farm in her absence.
Our MMC is so dang grumpy, but the love he has for his nephew, who he’s been raising like his own son, adds an extra layer of depth to his rough exterior.
And THE TENSION!!! It’s instant, and their enemies to lovers journey is filled with witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and some seriously spicy moments that had me hooked.
It’s a solid 4-star read— romantic, fun, and full of warmth. Perfect for anyone who loves a grumpy/sunshine dynamic, a small-town setting, and a love story with a little spice and a lot of heart.
ARC Review. Thank you to Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for the opportunity to read an early copy! This was such a cozy romance, with all of the small town vibes that reminded me of my hometown. Grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers, single dad, forced proximity…literally how can you go wrong? If you like books by authors like Sarah Adams, Elsie Silver, and B.K. Borison you will love Elle Rivers’ As it Was! I can’t wait for the next book coming this fall 🥰 I highly recommend you to add this book to your TBR. It’s a perfect summer read, leading up to fall! Releases July 27th 🤩
I wish I could rate this book more than 5 stars honestly!!! I will definitely be reading more of this author!! The only issue with reading a book as soon as it’s published, is needing to wait for the next one😂😭
Farmer Cain is H O T. He’s troubled, grumpy, and raising a young child all alone, until beautiful Mollie comes crashing into his life. She’s bubbly, determined, running away from an abusive ex, and suddenly in ownership of her late grandads farm. Of which Cain is the manager.
I just adored this romance so much, it’s sweet, and funny, but there’s depth to it too. It totally shows what it can be like living in a small town. I love that each chapter starts with a Facebook town group post! The road I lived on with my parents when I was younger had one (and still does), and it really can be just as catty!😂
Eric is such a cutie pie, the sweetest little thing ever! I love single dad romances partially bc the kids are just adorable!
There’s the tropes of grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, found family, single dad, small town, and honestly it eats all of them up. It’s yummy, delicious, nutritious, I couldn’t get enough - I want to ask for seconds, and thirds.
But yes. I absolutely loved every single thing about this book, I read it in one sitting, and not for one second was I bored! 10/10⭐️
My first ever ARC and man what a read!! I LOVED this book so much!! Grumpy/sunshine is one of my favorite tropes & this book nailed it!
The banter, the Facebook posts at the beginning of every chapter. The drama & the redemption for certain characters was great! I hope we will see more tidbits of mollie and Cain in the future with this series of standalones!
Really loved it, wanted to murder Trevor the whole time though but I really enjoyed reading it!
I loved the plot and the relationship between Mollie and Cain! And Eric was so sweet too! I also loved seeing the Facebook group messages and seeing how those played into the story too

This was such a fast and cute book. I loved the characters and their development. The banter was AMAZING, the tension was definitely there, I loved how the romance progressed. It was genuinely addictive and I couldn't put the book down. I think there were lots of things happening at the same time, and other things felt kind of rushed and dramatised, but overall, a good book. It's perfect if you're looking for an easy read, small town romance, with lots of found family. Thank you to the author and to Literary Rising for the ARC copy!🫶🏻
I can't even express how much I enjoyed this book! From the moment I started reading this book, I could imagine it as a movie. I was immediately sucked into the little town of Strawberry Springs, and I didn't want to leave.
As someone who reads a lot of books (especially cowboy and small town romance), it's often hard for a book to really stand out and be memorable to me. As It Was is going to live rent-free in my head for a hot minute.
This book felt like it had it all - the banter, medding townies, cute kid, funny animals, real-life problems, emotional depth, character growth, spice . . . I was honestly blown away. I was so invested in the development of both of the characters, and nothing felt rushed.
Seeing Mollie go from a withdrawn, traumatized version of herself in her engagement (sit on a cactus, Trevor) to rediscovering who she was and feeling safe enough with Cain to let her sassiness fly was just so beautiful. I could identify with her longing to find a place that felt like home, and admired her determination to fix things when she made mistakes.
Cain is the best kind of grump, because deep down, it's just a way to protect himself and the people he loves. In reality, he's a big softie who would rather let a whole town judge him unfairly if it meant protecting his foster mom. Speaking of fostering, he's the guardian of his five year old nephew Eric, who is such a sweet addition. Grumpy protective men who have favorite candles and emotional intelligence are at the top of my list now for book boyfriends thanks to Cain.
Sometimes small town romances (especially first ones in an interconnected series) are overwhelming with all of the side characters, but this was the first book I'd ever read that introduced them with posts from the town facebook group. If you've ever lived in a small town, it's incredibly on point, and they were really freaking funny. At no point was I confused about who anyone was, and it was easy to really care about everyone you met.
The author also put the creator of Stardew Valley in the acknowledgements because the town and some of the characters are loosely inspired by the game! As someone who loves the game, I had the best time figuring out who was who.
The book was well-written, the spice was well-written (I love realistic scenes that feel like they're actually part of the plot), and overall, if you want a funny, emotional new comfort read, I absolutely recommend As It Was! I feel like this series is going to be one to watch for sure 🫶
Tropes: 🍓Single Dad 🍓Forced Proximity 🍓Grumpy x Sunshine 🍓Slow Burn 🍓Found Family
I love Elle Rivers writing stile! It’s so much fun and sass. And I think this is by far my most favorite book of hers!
At the beginning of the book Mollie is engaged to Trevor and after a few pages I already knew he would be non redeemable because he is just such an horrible person. He makes her clean up after him and he is absolutely messy. He knocks on the wall for his coffee in the morning and denies her a real breakfast 😳 He also shows some controlling tendencies and it gets to be to much for Mollie when it comes to the farm her grandfather owned. She desperately wants to go back there and after finding out he left the house to her (which was hidden from her for years by her parents and her fiancé 👀) she goes back there without any hesitation left.
Arriving there she tries to get into the house but her keys won’t work so she kind of breaks into it assuming it’s standing empty and abandoned for years. She finds out pretty much immediately that the house is not empty but Cain and his nephew Eric are living inside since the death of her grandfather and Cain is managing the farm.
Eric is my Favorite!!! I think he is my spirit animal 😂 the way he teases his grumpy uncle and guardian is just so fun. Their loves sort is building slowly but steady and I just fell in love alongside them. I’m in love with strawberry springs and all the people 😅 the drama (especially drama queen Kerry) is amazingly hilarious and right on point love how the whole town comes together as a family and I loved the bonus chapter that gave us a bit of their future I laughed and smiled so much!
Tropes: 🍓Grumpy x Sunshine 🤍 Found Family 🍓 Slow Burn 🤍 Forced Proximity 🍓 Single Dad 🤍 Small Town
My favorite moments:
They eat dinner outside to watch the sunset because she loves sunsets and the orange it makes the sky look 😍: “Rule one of the house: We eat at the dining-room table, but it can only be broken by rule two, which is dinner together is more important than location.”
“The whole Facebook group is gonna hear about this,” Cain muttered. “You were so nice!” Eric said. “I’ve never seen you say so many words.” - I just can’t 😂😂😂
“You used to only smile at one person. Your kid. Now, we all need to add her to the list.” - I love that 😍
Thank you Elle Rivers and Literary Rising for this ARC it’s my favorite so far for this summer and a perfect vacation read!
*ARC REVIEW* I can not describe how much I really enjoyed this book i binge read this all night couldn’t put it down and passed out after it but oh my it was worth it, I have been a fan for Elle for sometime now and her books never disappoint and her men? Even better.
This book was so cozy and comforting and you could literally feel like you’re with them and the small town and the vibe it gets with it and how gossipy it is it just felt soo good, Elle always deliver what I need the grumpy X sunshine dynamic between them and the chemistry they had had me in my toes the whole time. Cain the man you are! How he’s so misunderstood and how soft and gentle he is how he’s a man of few words but with lots of actions.. and Eric he’s so sweet he melted my heart many times already. Mollie she was strong, the character building, she have depth and she makes you fall in-love with her instantly like not only them but us too. Mollie was like the light in the end of the dark tunnel for Cain and he was like the warm home who hugs you when you’re at your lowest and lost. They were perfect for each other. This book was sweet, cozy with a twist of emotional damage that makes you tear up and laugh along the way.
I wanna thank Elle for always putting real life struggles and how to navigate toxic situations and trauma and how to handle them and heal through them, to me every time I read a book from her it fixed something in me it even helped me stand up to myself in many ways than one and be more confident in who I am. Thank you.
I’m sooo excited for a lot of things!! First Wren’s book! Like she’s such a sweetheart and I’m dying to know her story, Second I hope Henry gets a happy ending and someone to love he’s such a sweetheart I’m inlove with him. And damn the town grant I thought I had it all figured out but ohh how wrong was I! I’m so excited to learn about it!.
I was kicking my feet when I saw my favorite couple making an entrance Amy and Levi here in town it was much more than I can ask for!!.

While this is definitely a grumpy x sunshine book but Mollie (FMC)as a “sunshine” isn’t annoyingly perky, just honest to goodness sweet, and there’s a depth to her character that I found refreshing. She’s easy to love, relatable, and I was immediately rooting for her. She’s probably the first “sunshine” in a romance that I didn’t immediately find cringy.
The conversational style is realistic and has fun banter, plus I loved the Facebook Group messages/comments at the beginning of each chapter and how they provide information for the town’s side characters and context. About halfway through some began to feel unrelated and I found myself wanting to skip them.
I would definitely say that the first 30% was incredibly exciting and interested then I hit a lull. Their romance was honestly probably my least favorite part of the storyline since the farm, the custody battle, the meddling town, and the toxic ex took the forefront of my attention.
Once they got together and I saw how healing he was for her, I was happy about it, but then I just wanted more of the sub-plots and less of the romance.
With that in mind… As a romance, I would give it a 3.5, but as a small town and healing journey story, it’s a solid 4. Plus, I have to give bonus points for the realistic conversations and actions (they actually wash up after sex and before cuddling, as one should!!)
So thank you, Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC! As always, all opinions are honest and my own.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ 2 of 3, multiple, detailed sex scenes but mostly focused on conversation and not overly graphic or vulgar.
Tropes include: Small town Grumpy x Sunshine Meddling Small Town Forced Proximity Single Dad Great Banter Toxic Ex Family Healing
3,5!! My first ARC and I really enjoyed it! I loved the small town/farm aspect, it felt cozy and fun. I enjoyed the book in general, but for me I felt like something was missing. A lot of things were happening, there were a lot of characters and it sometimes felt overwhelming. I felt like the story had a lot of events, but there wasn’t enough details on these events. It wasn’t always fluid, sometimes, the changes of events/problem felt choppy and abrupt. I would have wanted more of the resolution of the problem before moving forward with another one. For me, there was a little too much of problems within the town/people and a little too much miscommunication. However, I adored the single dad and the story with the son. I loved reading about the family aspect. I also enjoyed reading about the town growing and evolving trough out the story. I liked the characters together, the banter between the main characters was great and enjoyable. I really liked this book, it was fun and simple and I had a good time reading about strawberry springs! I would recommend if you like small town romance✨🌸
I don’t even know where to begin with how this book made me feel. 💭✨ The story was beautifully structured — the pacing of the slow burn was chef’s kiss, and the character growth? So well done.
Nothing felt rushed; it all felt real. Coming from completely different worlds, Mollie and Cain slowly found their way to each other in such a beautiful way — realizing that no matter what problems they’d face, they’d always have each other. 🤎
The side characters played such a key role too. They didn’t just fill space — they brought meaning, warmth, and that true found family feeling.
And don’t even get me started on the banter! Mollie and Cain had me laughing out loud with their dynamic, and the small town of Strawberry Springs came alive thanks to its quirky, lovable residents. 🍓 (I’m still obsessed with the Strawberry Springs Neighborhood Watch Facebook group 😂). Heartfelt, hilarious, and completely comforting — this story definitely left a mark. 💫
This was one of my first Elle Rivers reads in a while, so I was a bit nervous going in, but I am happy to say I enjoyed this book.
The banter, especially early on, was really good. While there were a couple of cringey moments (reading ‘aura’ was rough), the chemistry and growth between the characters made up for it. The romance itself was solid, but what I liked the most were the main characters’ personal journeys. I feel like sometimes those get overlooked in romance novels or forgotten once the characters get together.
This book is the first in the Strawberry Springs series, and I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series (calling Wren and the town doctor now).
Thank you to Literary Rising and Elle Rivers for the ARC of As It Was!
As soon as I saw it was a single dad/small town romance, I knew I had to read it. This was actually my first Elle Rivers book and I was not disappointed!
The banter between Mollie and Cain was great, I loved the Facebook group posts at the start of each chapter, and the residents of Strawberry Springs added so much charm and entertainment. The redemption/ second chances were really well done and I loved how it all wrapped up in the end.
I’m already looking forward to Wren’s story, and in the meantime, I’ll definitely be picking up another Elle Rivers book☺️
Thank you so much to Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC!
Listen, I looooove Stardew Valley, so when I heard Elle was writing a SV-inspired book, it was an immediate add to the tbr. This one did not disappoint, and I think it might be my absolute favorite book of Elle’s so far!
It hit all the beats I wanted it to, with just the perfect tug on the heartstrings in all the right places. I’m a sucker for a bond between two unlikely characters with secrets they hold close for their own reasons.
Missing my grandparents and their farm from when I was a kid just a little extra these days, and reading this (and re-reading it) really soothes the soul.
Straight up, I don't usually reach for a romance with much expectations it's usually an easy flat kind of read for me in-between series. BUT this one, Ellie's skills, it had me giggling, grinding my teeth, and fully crying for the MMC. Such beautifully written characters and dynamics with a great plot, a sprinkle of spice without it being the main focus. This book has real life, relatable undertones throughout that makes you feel like you're living it!
A huge huge thank you to Ellie Rivers and Literary Rising for my ARC copy.
First off, thank you to Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC.
Tropes - Single Dad - Grumpy X Sunshine - Slow Burn - Found Family - Forced Proximity
I also want to say I have read Elle’s work before and it didn’t blow me away so I was nervous to get into this book, but I really shouldn’t have been because this book was fantastic. It was funny, witty, romantic, heartwarming, and just everything you could want in a small-town romance. Now let’s get into the good stuff.
FMC – This particular FMC, Mollie, made me really proud to be a woman. From going from a relationship that was sucking the life out of her, to going to a completely different environment and thriving. It was really nice and super refreshing to see her growing and becoming the woman she always wanted to be. I liked Mollie as a main character so much and she was so easy to love.
MMC – Cain, was a fantastic MMC. I do love a grumpy man, and this one was particularly grumpy, and I ate it up. Seeing Cain go from someone who is so isolated to someone who has a support group around him was really heartwarming.
Plot – the plot of this novel was so good. It was easy to follow, fun to read, and at no point did I find myself confused about where the characters stood with each other, or with themselves. I really enjoyed every aspect of this book.
Romance – THE ROMANCE???? Elle Rivers does not write spice heavy books, but she was does write is pining men and honestly that’s all I need. I loved seeing the characters go from genuinely hating each other to seeing each other and finding their home and their place in the world with each other. It’s no surprise that Cain and Mollie were going to end up together since this is a romance but, nevertheless, it was so much fun to watch them fall for each other. On top of that, I think their two different personality traits meld so well together and they were definitely meant for each other.
You know those posts that are like “Did these characters stay together after the book was over?” Cain and Mollie will definitely stay together for the rest of forever.
One of my favorite parts of this book was the beginning of each chapter we see a bit about the town and the inhabitants of it and how they act. Seeing them change throughout the book and grow too was super fun and it gave this book the overall feeling of peace, but it also added that smalltown vibe that can be super hard to write into the book. I really loved those parts, and I loved how Elle incorporated the small town vibe into every chapter.
Overall – I read this book in one sitting and stayed up until four am doing so. If you’re thinking that you won’t like it because there really isn’t any spice, do not fret because it still filled with tension and lots of banter. These two characters fight like cats and dogs. I really did enjoy this book and look forward to reading more of Elle’s book.
First, I want to thank Literary Rising and Elle Rivers for giving me the opportunity to read As It Was as an ARC. I loved this book from the very first page and I’m thrilled to share it with other readers.
This wasn’t the first book I’ve read by Elle Rivers, and just like with her other stories, I was instantly in love and couldn’t put it down.
As It Was is a beautifully written, emotionally rich, and addictive story that had me hooked from start to finish. It gave me the perfect cozy vibes, and I was not disappointed 🥰.
What stood out most to me was the strength and journey of Mollie 🥹. Watching her overcome the weight of a past, oppressive relationship and slowly find her way back to herself was both powerful and inspiring. She has a sunny and positive personality—not in an over-the-top or annoying way, but in a genuinely lovable way that made me fall for her character immediately.
Cain comes across as gruff and cold—a classic grump—to everyone except his adoptive mother and Eric. The saying “rough on the outside, gentle on the inside” describes him perfectly. Cain has been hurt too many times in his life, and as a result, he’s cautious and constantly afraid of losing the good in his world. He’s determined to give Eric the love and stability he never had himself—and he dedicates every waking moment to ensuring that.
The relationship between Mollie and Cain is one of the book’s brightest sparks. It begins with bickering, banter, and reluctant tension 🥵 —a perfect example of the enemies-to-lovers or grumpy x sunshine trope—but gradually deepens into something heartfelt, full of trust, vulnerability, and affection. Watching Cain slowly open up to Mollie about his fears and hopes (even while hiding behind sarcasm) made me feel so connected to their story. The slow burn romance was perfectly paced—never rushed—and when they finally came together, it was everything I hoped for and more 🌶️🌶️.
A fun extra element was the inclusion of Facebook group messages at the start of each chapter. These gave insight into the town and its people—and made me laugh out loud, especially whenever the sheriff got annoyed about being tagged in a comment 😄
Elle Rivers has such a gift for capturing raw emotion—I laughed, I cried, and I truly felt like I was right there with the characters. This story reminded me that healing can come from unexpected places, and that love, when it’s right, feels like coming home.
Highly recommend to anyone who loves emotional, heartwarming romance with humor, hope, and depth.
If you like the following tropes, this story is for you: tropes include: Small town Enemies-to-Lovers Grumpy x Sunshine (Very) Meddling Small Town Forced Proximity Single Dad Great Banter Toxic Ex Family Healing
The small town farm vibes? Immaculate. The characters? I have a super love and super hate relationship with different characters. I promise that when you read it you WILL understand (don’t worry, you’ll love most of them). But when I tell you that I have never wanted to absolutely roundhouse kick a person more than I wanted to roundhouse kick some of these people. MAN. Personally, I found this book to draw SO many emotions out of me. Complete and total rage? Check. Overwhelming sadness and worry? Check. The cheesiest and happiest of smiles? Check. It was a whirlwind and I enjoyed every single second of it (besides the times I was hella stressed, but even then I was enjoying being so engaged). So if you want to feel something or are in a reading slump, try reading this. You’ll have so many feelings back to back that you will not want to put it down. I’ve also realized that I annotate books like I’m having a conversation with the characters lol. My annotations in this book are WILD. There's over 800 of them (834 to be exact), so many reactions. Another thing that’s awesome? There’s like fake little Facebook posts that give you insight to town life and side characters' personalities. It’s such a fun way to do background characterization. There’s also perfectly formatted text messages that are just so aesthetically pleasing. Overall I really, really enjoyed reading it. I can’t wait until I can buy a physical copy because it’s that good. There are definitely sex scenes present but that’s not the plot at all (sometimes you just need to get dicked down *shrug*). And honestly, it’s well written. I’ve read a lot of sex scenes in my day and I straight up told my man that the ones in this book are well done. Totally not related at alllll to the sex scenes, but he calls her princess and that makes me really happy. Books by Elle Rivers are usually filled with real life problems and feelings that she then articulates in a way that is so realistic. Even down to conversations between people. You’ll most definitely read something that could have been said to you literally last week. SO if any of what I’ve shared here even remotely piques your interest, you should most certainly give it a try. At the VERY least to find out what all the drama is about. In a small town, there’s always something going on. AND BOY is there a lot going on in Strawberry Springs. (I don’t want to give any of the plot away because it’s so important to be able to read a new book without preconceived notions. BUT in this house we ship Mollie and Cain hardcore. Also Moosely is an icon and Eric is a legend. Jackie is a strong badass and Hennifer is on the roof… don’t ask).
First of all, all I have to say about Trevor is that I wish him all the bad things in the world !! I absolutely hate him so much and it reminded me so much of a toxic ex I used to have. Just having to hear Trevor talk and be so disgustingly evil just soured my mood. But when you read about Cain, that man truly does have a heart of gold. And who doesn’t love a grumpy guy with a heart of gold that has a farm ❤️🥹
This is the story of Mollie and Cain, two people who are literally the complete opposites of each other. But, truly are meant for one another. Their chemistry and their banter is off the charts and everyone in whole town knows about how they are and feel. But these two are to scared, oblivious and even in denial bc they don’t want to give in to their inner desires. I truly loved how Cain pushed Mollie’s buttons, but for the best of it! He truly made sure she knew she was a badass in oh so few little words 😅🤣 but the way these two compliment each other makes my heart swell with joy. Now, Cain is truly a gentleman and a real man, who doesn’t take the coward way, and force someone to become a shell of themselves.
As for Mollie, I’m so proud of her for standing up to Trevor and leaving him. It isn’t easy having to make the choice of leaving someone you have known for 5 years. However, at one point, you have to make the choice before you end up being a shell of yourself for the rest of your life. And Mollie was able to do that all on her own, and go back to Strawberry Fields. I hated that her parents thought they knew her better and kept her from knowing the truth and honestly what kind of parents wouldn’t listen to their daughter over some guy she has been saying. Her parents truly annoyed me, more so her mother than her father but still. And don’t get me started on Eric! He is the cutest, sweetest, ball of energy that Cain definitely needed in his life before Mollie came around 🙂↕️
One of my favorite things about reading this book is the playlist at the beginning of the book 🥰😍 it truly adds to the ambience and what the mood is for 🙂↕️ as well as the song As It Was by Harry Styles!! Slight spoiler on the songs of the playlist but I truly loved that this song was included. And the fact that the book cover is exactly Mollie’s favorite color also tugs at my heartstrings! I love watching sunsets and this one has become one of my all time favorite ones too ❤️
Thank you to Elle and Literary Rising for the ARC!
When I first received the Arc of this book, I was going to wait until Monday to read it,after finishing my exams and everything but I started reading it yesterday and couldn’t stop !!!
I’d already read a couple books by Elle Rivers so i knew that I’d enjoy the writing, story telling style and was exited for more.
When I first went in the story knowing a bit the different tropes I’d find, like single parent, forced proximity, grumpy sunshine and dual pov among others, all tropes that I love so I knew that I’d like it. But I enjoyed it so much more than I would have thought!
You first have the two main characters Cain but had a hard time growing up with foster families and the fact that the small countryside town seems to hate him (small town drama). He works on a farm with his cute nephew, who is pretty much his son. Their relationship is so cute and touching. And then you have Mollie who learns how to love herself again; her true self, and gets her priorities straight (aka she leaves her city girl life behind to go be a farm girl at her grandpas old farm that he left her ). And surprise surprise who ends up being at the farm CAIN as you’d guessed.
Their relationship is so cute, slow burn which we love but not too slow burn, their banter is also top notch, I love when the main characters get at each others throat but in a banter way. And once their relationship turned into something more romantic it’s still so touching. And also if you are not aware this book does contain spice 🌶️🌶️, which I feel if you already like reading books with spice it’s great. In those scenes you can also really tell that their relationship is one that would hold after the story is done, they fit so well together!
All in all I really enjoyed this book! Couldn’t put it down, was really invested in all the small town drama that was also happening. There were also some characters that in the begginging annoyed me but the redemption arc came through by the end, and all was well.
All I’m going to say is read this book! And I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Now I’m on my way to read other books by Elle Rivers 🏃♀️
