Abin Sur has arrived, and he is here to judge all of the people of Evergreen, including Jo Mullein and Hal Jordan. But is this alien being friend or foe,and just what will his judgement bring?
Too short. I hope they aren't charging 5 bucks for this one. If so, I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of my DC Infinite subscription. My cheap bitching aside, I have to say that this has such great twists on all of the Lanterns. I'm hooked.
Now I haven't been keeping up, so I don't really know who Jo Mullein is, but I like her so far. What the heck is going on with Abin Sur?! Did he really And Hal's creepy arm! And what exactly happened to John?! You can't just say something cryptic and leave us hanging, Ewing!
Good stuff. Recommended.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Just finished Absolute Green Lantern #2 and I’m still totally hooked. The story keeps evolving in unexpected ways, and I honestly have no idea where these character resets are leading—but that’s part of the fun. It’s bold, mysterious, and keeps you guessing in the best way. I’m all in for the ride.
Keeps the darkness. Keeps the awesome atmosphere. Hal questioning what the fuck is happening, especially with his arm of hell. We get glimpses of the event, of the carnage, of people dying. How will Jo and Hal navigate through this? I dunno but I LOVE what Ewing is supplying.
Hal’s Black Hand is still the most interesting part of the series so far. Simultaneously, this issue feels like it still should’ve been an extended first issue. I know nothing more about anyone or anything else since the first issue outside of a Guy Gardner (dis)appearance.
The plot is continuing to thicken and as I am standing here awestruck, I also keep thinking of more and more questions. This issue picks up right where we left off, but also flows back into the past to see how we got here. But right now we see Sojourner seemingly wake up right as we saw her walk in on Hal in the diner he just destroyed with the black hand. A voice appears in her mind, a ring that I believe we also saw talking to Hal last issue, but this voice tells her that she exists at the green level of light and that she must be entirely without fear. She isn’t exactly sure what happened to her, but more importantly is what happened to Hal. He tells her to keep away, he can’t control the black hand it will lash out if he feels threatened. He has tried using all of his willpower to hold it back…but it just doesn’t work.
Hal then makes reference to what happened to John and Guy, and that they don’t understand the rules that makes these powers work. That’s when we flash back to Abin Sur’s first arrival to the town. We see as the cops, lead by sheriff Guy Gardner, block off and approach Abin Sur on the ground. He announces himself and says a very similar thing to what Jo heard in her head at the start, that he comes from the green lantern and exists at the green level of light and that they must be without fear. Guy tries to keep a lid on the situation and to keep the others back, but as Abin Sur raises his hand and green light begins to pour out and he claims that there will be judgement…you can understand why even Guy would pull his gun on Abin Sur here. But it was finally Jo that broke through the tension, and pointed out to them that this is first contact and their entire town has a bubble surrounding it. So do they really want to escalate a situation with a thing they don’t understand?!
As Hal and Jo are talking in the diner, Hal points out that while Jo was focused on Guy…he was focused on the crowd. He could see their faces of shock and fear with everyone holding their breaths…then laying out a sigh of relief as Guy lowers his and the other officers guns and began to talk to Abin…only for Abin Sur to judge him and seemingly eviscerate Guy on the spot. Everyone freaked out, is this what judgement is?! The other cops immediately opened fire, but the projections from Abin just sent all of their shots into the crowd. The entire time he reaffirmed that they must be without fear…all while he slashed them down. With one cop decapitated and the other one loosing their hand, John was the first to rush in to deliver aid. But Hal went for the dropped gun and went for Abin Sur…who happened to know his name!! John stepped over between Hal and Abin and talked Hal down, at the worst it will kill him and at the least it will…take his hand. Either way, as we know now something will take his hand. As John convinced Hal to stand down, Abin tells him to be without fear (also knowing his name) and then flies back up to his ship in the sky.
As we go back to the diner, Jo points out that Hal never did give that gun back. Hal remembers that he never did, and while looking at his black hand he is able to project the image of a gun in his hand. As he does it also seems like the darkness begins to take over, he brings to talk about how hungry it is for the light. That it doesn’t want to quite absorb it, but it wasn’t to overturn it…to win the argument. He mentions that it's very old and that it should have been gone, but something fed it and gave it a chance and now it’s everywhere. Could that be what Abin was judging, purging anyone that contained this fear? Hal continues to try and fight it but as his eyes turn black he also seems to relish in everything it’s telling him.
As the issue comes to an end we cut back to the past after the confrontation with Abin Sur. The gang is hanging out at “Alan Scott’s Atom Bomb Cafe & Diner,” as they discuss what to do next. In the present they mention something else happening to John, and as this issue comes to an end he mentions that he may have a way to take Abin Sur out. The final page shows John with a gold ring, I’m not sure what it is or what he thinks he can do…but I am guessing it won’t work out very well.
P.S. AB Superman #7 spoilers: I just finished reading the new AB Superman and a line stuck out to me. When brainiac spoke to the brainiac collective they looked at the readings for Superman and couldn’t believe it. They recommended that it may be one of the “adepts of OA,” and that brainiac should send inquired to the “blackstars.” WHAT?! That reminded me of a line Hal says in this issue where the describes the black hand as a dark star. Are the green lanterns not the ones in charge on OA?!

I am thinking this is a trauma metaphor. how experiencing significant trauma can lead to a heightened sense of anxiety and panic and vice versa. the patrons at the dinner were anxious and panic and as a result they were quick to rush to action but they all ended up dying as a result of it. A parallelism was on play in the town when Guy ordered his men to compose and find themselves and they did but once something happened they didn’t understand (fear of unknown) they resorted to panic and used violence to try and gain control. This is why i think what the be without fear means. when we are very afraid all we see if a very constricted and distorted view of reality that doesn’t allow for a lot of freedom and alternative thinking, its all black and white, trauma coded thinking. I actually love this series.
First Contact! Really like what they do here with Abin Sur, he looks menacing as hell, like a fusion of Majin Buu and Goro from mortal kombat. Lots of unexpected brutality in this issue but it sets the stage for the stakes which just keep building as the mystery slowly unfolds itself.
I didn’t really know what to think with issue 1 but I dug this one. I feel like this is the Absolute DC series which I feel the most apprehensive, in a good way because I have no idea what story is being tread here or how these characters are going to develop. Like Hal isn’t just palette swapped with someone else, he really feels different than the Hal we know and I love that.
WHAT THEY DID TO MY GUY? Would love to see him wooped. Punched. Ridicularized. Not bald. Not disappearing in the hands of the freakish looking Abin Sur ever. Still... good. Mysteryous. Intriguing. Guy disapearing? Weird. John having a plan? Normal. Jo being dramatically bold? Expected. Hal being overwhelmed but hanging there? Well, that's how you got Parallax. Still curious to WTF is that black hand. Will see.
People have very low standards if they’re rating these issues 5 stars. Maybe one of the worst series I’ve read so far.
Slow story telling. Weird character designs and twists. Manga artwork? It just doesn’t work for my kind of DC. Still nothing new to be told with this issue. A waste of time and I don’t rust to continue this series.
I can tell this Absolute title is going to be more of a slow burn than the rest of them, but I’m fully on board with this creative team. I love Ewing doing more body horror - which for real starts to show up in this issue - and Lindsay seems to be up to the task. RIP (??) Guy Gardner.

Abin Sur, a large alien that appeared in Evergreen came to cast judgement but we have no idea why. Hal still has this mysterious hand that kills everything in sight. Everything is still so shrouded in mystery.
I thought the second issue of Absolute Green Lantern would show more into the storyline, but there still is no clear cut story. The artwork seem kind of hazy and is average at best. So far all talk no action.
this is weird and not the best but you know what I'm committed to finishing every absolute series but so far in last place in terms of quality. If anyone wants a good absolute series check out absolute batman or wonder woman, or personally I loved the flash ones.
Love the mood and art, story pacing feels a bit awkward here and there and Jo is pretty passive so far. Interested to see what happened to Guy and how Hal will deal with the issue that is his hand.
Poor writing. Nothing is getting me invested in the characters. Abin Sur shows and starts judging ppl, Hal is annoying and nothing has been explained two issues in.
