Rate this book
“Did you ever hear tell of the soul of a living person walking, split asunder from its mortal body?”

Vengeful spirits, mysterious maladies and wondrous happenings that aren’t so easily explained—the world of A Spirited Evening harks back to the classic era of the 19th century ghost story, pulling you into a Victorian world where the line between reality and the supernatural is blurred.

This book contains six atmospheric and subtly creepy short stories that will send a pleasant shiver down your spine:

A Most Unusual Disturbance
Reflections on a Malady
The White Lady
Three Knocks
A Spirited Evening
The Darkness Within

What is the source of the strange music that haunts an old manor house each night? What dark secrets lie between the pages of a mysterious book? And who—or what—is responsible for the late-night knocking at the door of a remote country inn?

Dim your lights, light a candle, and settle yourself in for A Spirited Evening…

Turn the television off, close the curtains, dim the lights, light the log fire and a few candles, sink back into that comfy old armchair and put your feet up on the pouffe. Arm yourself with a pot of tea and a large whisky, then read this book.

Six unexplainable, bizarre, supernatural tales will hold you spellbound. Written in the classical style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens, the diction is like a breath of fresh air, lulling you back in time to a period when ghosts resided in every shadow.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Most of the stories have an unresolved ending, but this didn’t detract from the pleasure. After all, these are tales of the unknown…

This book includes six different supernatural stories, and while they have a traditional feel to them, each has their own unique take.

The author's Victorian era writing style is convincing and very impressive. I'm a writer too, but I couldn't even imagine being able to pull this off! And despite the old fashioned tone, it was still easy to follow and understand. None of it was lost on me.

I was a bit disappointed that some of the stories weren't explained more, and they essentially remained mysteries. But overall, I still enjoyed every one of them. It would be hard to pick a favorite, but "The White Lady" and "A Spirited Evening" were definitely up there. I suppose I like the idea of vengeful ghosts!

I'd recommend this collection to anyone looking to read creepy stories in a historical setting with a truly authentic feel. It's hard to believe this book was written so recently!

K.B. Goddard has given us a lovely little collection of stories ranging from the whimsically fantastic, to the downright eerie. I happen to love the era in which she is writing, having grown up with the likes of Hawthorne, Melville, Thackeray, and the Bronte sisters, and this hit the note right on the money. There is a lot of courage, kindness, and wonder in these tales.

Goddard's writing is clear, light, and lucid, her tone pitch perfect, and the stories themselves perfect for getting chills in the late hours of reading. My only two complaints are a few misplaced pieces of punctuation (which, given that is my only real issue, is commendable. The big publishing houses miss more in editing than Goddard did;) and, that it is so short. At just over 120 pages I was left wanting more.

A strong collection of stories from a talented author. I'm looking forward to what else she has to offer in the future, and recommend any of you with the ghost or fairytale bone to give these a try.

A perfect read for the Halloween season. I love the old fashioned style the writer uses. It forces me to pay attention and engages me more in the stories. I'm not sure if she's just read a lot of literature from the period or if she's a time traveler, but she seems to have a firm grasp on the style. The stories themselves will most likely seem familiar, but the author has definitely made them her own. I will admit that many of them are not neatly tied up with an explanation, but the best scary stories never are. I'm looking forward to the author's next collection.

If I hadn't known already, I'd have been double checking the publishing date. Having been a big fan of the Brontes, I was impressed with the similar tone and style. It reminded me of Wuthering Heights! This collection of stories is well crafted and entertaining, and made for an enjoyable, almost nostalgic, read.

This is a mysterious collection of stories that are written in a style of a bygone era. The author created a world not unlike 'A Christmas Carol'. A perfect read for a chilly winter's night sitting in front of a roaring fire.

Great little book

Well written without being too wordy. Really captured the Victorian feeling of the genre. Although the stories are reasonably short they still manage to capture the essence of the plot and charaters. Looking forward to reading more by this author.

I have recently got quite into reading spooky Victorian novels so I thought this collection of short stories sounded interesting.
Although I wasn't so keen on the first story in this book which didn't seem to have a proper conclusion, from then on each story was very good- a nice length to read in an evening and each spooky tale had a satisfying ending. I found the last story in the book the most creepy and unsettling of all- made me want to keep checking behind me for a while!
A Spirited Evening and other stories is an enjoyable and imaginative collection and I recommend to anybody who likes a nice creepy tale... or six.
