The Clever Microbiota: Treat the gut to heal the mind

Rate this book
In light of the most recent discoveries about the connection between the gut and the brain—some of which were made by Maria Rescigno herself—we are gaining an increasingly detailed understanding of how these two systems influence one another. In this book, the internationally renowned scientist, whose work has been published in top-tier journals such as Science and Nature, clearly explains how the gut–brain axis is regulated by the microbiota. Guiding readers through the latest findings and potential future developments, she shows us how to “modulate” the microbiota—using specific probiotics and postbiotics, bacterial metabolites, fermented foods, and even microbiota transplants—in order to preserve and restore a healthy gut barrier, thereby preventing and treating illnesses related to its imbalance.

The connection between the digestive system and the mind has been known for some time, but only now are we beginning to truly grasp the real impact of this link. Drawing on her pioneering research, Professor Maria Rescigno, Full Professor of General Pathology and Vice-Rector at Humanitas University, explores for the first time the new frontiers of research on the relationship between the first and second brain. She reveals how disruptions in the balance of one system inevitably affect the other, with significant consequences for both our physical and mental health.
It is no coincidence that several conditions traditionally viewed as “brain diseases”—such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, depression, schizophrenia, autism, eating disorders, and many others—also manifest in the gut. Conversely, intestinal diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease are frequently associated with nervous system disorders. With a style that blends scientific authority with engaging storytelling, Maria Rescigno offers insights into the ongoing challenges in biomedical research and equips readers with practical tools to take care of their gut and microbiota every day. Her to help prevent—or at least slow down—the onset of some of today’s most widespread neurodegenerative diseases.
