This is another example of why I keep coming back to A. Paige Turner’s books, even though this isn’t my usual genre. She has such a gift for taking deeply painful, real-life experiences and turning them into stories that feel raw, emotional, and impossible to look away from.

This was heartbreaking in a very human way. Addiction doesn’t just affect one person, it ripples through everyone who loves them, and I thought this story captured that so powerfully. Even in a shorter format, the emotional impact was huge.

A. Paige Turner writes with so much compassion and authenticity that you can’t help but feel every moment. Her stories make you reflect, empathize, and see life a little differently when you finish.

This novella is beautiful, emotional, and incredibly impactful.

“Because addiction doesn’t ask for permission. It doesn’t care how hard you try. It doesn’t care how many days you’ve been clean. All that cares about is the need the craving that pulls you under when you’re too tired to fight.”

“Because relapse doesn’t just haunt the addict. It haunts the people who loved them too. “

The his book hit home for me. These quotes and so many more perfectly depict what it’s like to have someone you love battle with addiction.

This book is so raw, real and unapologetic.

I finished this book in one sitting, couldn’t put it down without seeing how it would end. It was heartbreaking, but a good representation of what loved ones go through with family members suffering from addiction. This is my first read from this author and I would definitely read more.

The Before and The After

The story takes you into a life of the Sister, Lila, how she watches from the sidelines as Emily slowly but surely becomes addicted to pills.

This novella is one of the hardest, most real stories. It shows you addiction in its rarest and truest forms. It gives you the story of what happens before, during and after. It doesn't sugar coat or fluff what addiction will be or is to most of the families that have dealt or are currently dealing with it. Because in a way the ones who are suffering, either the ones addicted or the ones who don't know how to help, all feel 'like they are drowning. Like they are to much for anyone to handle and it is suffocating.'

This novella is for the ones who have suffered and it is a remarkable story indicting that even if we feel alone and that we can't do if. There is always someone willing to help even if its lending an ear.

This is not only a story about addiction, but also picking up the pieces that addiction put you through and deciding that your gonna quit letting it dictate your life for you and at some point, your gonna break, and say, I’m done and get the help you need, so that you can rebuild your life and so the people around you can begin to rebuild theirs too, because addiction doesn’t just affect the addict it affects everyone that loves and cares about you also!

It’s a slow process with many valleys, mountains and hills to climb but with a support system around you, anything is possible and recovery is achievable.

Emily’s story will break your heart, but you feel a sense of pride for the effort and time she and the people around her put in to helping her succeed esp her sister. It’s a heartbreakingly beautiful story.

Great Read!

I truly believe everyone can relate to this story in some way. Whether you’ve personally struggled with addiction, watched a friend battle it, or helplessly stood by as a family member fought their own demons, this book hits close to home.

What touched me the most was the overwhelming feeling of wanting to save someone you love, while realizing that sometimes love alone isn’t enough. That sense of helplessness, heartbreak, hope, and grief was written so authentically that I felt every emotion right alongside the characters.

The author did an incredible job bringing those feelings to life. This wasn’t just a story about addiction it was about the painful reality that you can’t always rescue the people you care about. It stayed with me long after I finished the last page, and I highly recommend it.

This book may only be 84 pages, but it carries the emotional weight of a full-length novel. Written from Lila’s perspective as she watches her sister battle addiction, the author gives an unfiltered look at how addiction impacts not only the person struggling but every single person who loves them. As someone who has also loved someone through addiction, this story hit in a very personal way. The fear, the helplessness, the frustration, the love.. it was all portrayed in a way that felt deeply familiar. Nothing is sugarcoated, and because of that, the story leaves a real impact. It’s not an easy read, but it’s an important one. It brings awareness, empathy, and a perspective a lot of people never see. I’m grateful this book exists.

Emily’s Pill Addiction is a gripping and emotionally powerful novella that shines a light on how addiction affects not only the addict, but every family member who loves them. The story captures the heartbreak, helplessness, and hope that ripple through a family struggling to cope.

Written as an introduction to the novel Emily’s Story, the novella is told through the perspective of Emily’s sister as the family desperately tries to save Emily while she struggles not to lose herself in the process.

These books are powerful tools for helping families better understand addiction and reminding them that they are not alone in what they are experiencing. Others have walked this painful road before them

Courage

A. Paige Turner wrote this beautiful novella that reminds you that a pill addiction is not easy to release. You have to truly want to get rid of the evil substance. You also need to have courage as the addiction is hiding behind every door.

This quote is so true: “That’s the thing with addiction - it doesn’t just change the addict; it changes everyone around them.”

This book shares how her sister suffers tremendously. The pain, the guilt, and the worrying is ruining her life as well. She needs Emily to conquer this evil to save both of their lives.

Turner’s books may be short, but they pack a powerful punch!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/4

The author did a fantastic job within 84 pages of walking you through a story of addiction.

This is a story of addiction and how much it takes from not just the one affected but everyone around them. How you watch someone slowly loose them and how hard it is to keep the faith, the hope during the darkest times of addiction. Addiction always takes more.

This story is told from Lila’s POV who is Emily’s sister that struggles with addiction and Lila walks you through moments before the call and after the call. You see how Lila handles the addiction her sister is facing. How Emily’s parents handle it. The author truly walks you through every step of addiction.

This is a story that will linger with you and one you won’t forget and will hopefully have a lasting change if needed.

What a glimpse into the world of addiction. Addiction can affect anybody, from any walk of life. Addiction not only changes the life of the addict, but friends, families, associates, it touches everyone involved. Coming from a family with parents who were addicts, this book was real and raw to me. The fight is never over, even if a life is lost. These are topics that should be discussed out loud, and not whispered in back rooms. Thankful for books like this!

This book is amazing! It had me tearing up a lot of times. The story is beautiful and I love how the author wrote this book. As someone who is studying to be a social worker, I love reading about both perspectives so you can really grasp how addiction affects everyone in the family/close friends, not just the person who is addicted. If you haven’t already, add this to your TBR along with the second book. These books are great!

As someone who has watched a loved one struggling with addiction and the ones that love them most navigate the destruction it causes, this story hits the depths of darkness and despair everyone involved experiences. As with every book I’ve read from A. Paige Turner, this story elicited raw emotion and made me reflect on what I thought I knew and how I feel.

This is a raw, honest look at addiction from a sister’s point of view. Addiction doesn’t discriminate—and whether you’re the one struggling or the one who loves them, the stigma that comes with it can be one of the hardest parts to carry.

For anyone who’s been touched by addiction, this is a must-read.

Exceptionally done.

An unfiltered look at the toll addiction takes not just on the addict but the people who love them. What A. Paige does so well is give you a front row seat to the emotions real people face every single day. She gives you perspective from both sides and a hard slap in the face or heart. It is real, it is raw and its absolutely worth reading.
