Drake and Yukiko have been dropped on the far side of the galaxy with no way back home. The ancient travel network created by the mysterious Those Who Came Before needed a supernova to power it for the trip out and it doesn’t look like there is likely to be another one anytime soon.
Lost in the shadows.
That isn’t going to stop him from trying to figure it out anyway, and that means he needs to get his hands on information and tech from the departed aliens. Only neither of those is easy to find as collectors have it hoarded away. Luckily, Drake is an expert at relieving people of things like that. Doing that with aliens will be a fresh twist, but it isn’t like he’s got anything else to do.
Drake, Yukio, and AI Archie are at it again, shepherding refugees to new planets and stealing ancient relics of a broken interstellar transportation system from local crime lords.
A book like Shadow Relics is not going to win any big prizes, but it might sell enough copies to pay for the time it took Chaney and Mixon to write it. However, six months after its first publication, audiences have not been large, though the ratings have been good. Amazon and the other e-book vendors are always hungry for new copy that will meet the expectations of their many niche markets, but sometimes it takes readers in those markets a while to find a series or book that encourages them to hit the download button. From the writer’s point of view, the best marketing strategy is to keep pumping them out. The more mooks in a series, the easier it is for potential readers to find them. The pace of episodes needs to be fast, but the story arc needs to move as slowly as a soap opera plot. It is as labor-intensive as the penny-a-word pulps used to be.
Drake and Yukiko begin work on ensuring that they have somewhere to put all the refugees that were caught up by the supernova's effect on the quantum sea. Thousands of ships arrive in various states and the process of ferrying people down to the abandoned city now dubbed Atlantis, begins. To ensure that the purchase of the city doesn't go south, they must steal a grant from a mob boss and give it to their seller which leads to much fun! They also work on ensuring that the city can be restored for habitation and that everything is organized. Meanwhile, they attempt to find out more about Those Who Came Before, who built the transport system that carried them and the others to the opposite 'side' of the galaxy. Little is known about them, though many artifacts have been identified. This tale is filled with suspense, intrigue, a double cross, conflict, romance, mystery and more, making it a fun and entertaining read.
Not bad for book 2. This has a lot more to do with logistics than characters. It's a little hard to get invested. I do find it entertaining, though, when Drake and Yukiko get into shenanigans. It's slightly too convenient that they seldom get caught, but a bit of fun nonetheless.
Jeffrey Kafer's delivery with this particular series is a little challenging. I love him as a narrator generally speaking - he's done several things I've very much enjoyed. This time, it's a little harder to distinguish who's speaking. Still, the series is worth it.
An imaginative and fast moving story with believable characters and tech. I have thoroughly enjoyed this read and it provided a welcome distraction during a hospital stay. Congratulations JN and Terry! I await the 3rd book in this series with bated breath.
This is the second in a series and continues the story. The plot is interesting with good character development. The storyline is somewhat predictable but interesting. The setting adds to the complexity.
This is an easy read. There is not much violence and the bad guys aren't any smarter than the MC. Speaking of which, I like both MCs and the supporting characters too. Good story, not one you can't put down, but worth reading none the less.
While the setting appears like science fiction, the story is basically a recount of bureaucracy like humans but human like aliens have that's the same So pretty boring with no real science or action. Won't waste any more time on this
This is a very detailed and complex story but is also a good read. I am amazed at the level of detail and how the authors must have designed the story. I am looking forward to the next book.
Finally a series that contains fine editing of the books, good plot, and great charachters. Action, intrigue, along with plot twists make this a winner. Jess.
Good pacing, believeable plot. Minor grammar mistakes, which is refreshing. Well done, sir! Onwards to the next one in this series. Thanks for the read!
