Tiny: Haven MCC

He has no reason to hate me, but he does...
New town. New start. When I take the position at Haven Customs, I think it's a perfect fit. I guess it's true what they say--if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Why is the one guy who hates me the one I can't stop thinking about?
I need to get my head checked; I need to just ignore him. Hard to do when the guy's built like a tank, when we have to work together.
And it becomes downright impossible when we end up roommates...

A really enjoyable book with well-realised characters.

I read Dylan, the first in this series and liked it a lot. I think I like Tiny a little less.

It starts, cleverly, around two-thirds of the way through Dylan. This provides an organic reason for Viv and Tiny to be forced into close proximity.

The characters are well-realised, very human and engaging. It is no hardship spending time with them. Dialogue is a particular talent of this writer – conversations between all the characters is nicely naturalistic.

I think where the book went wrong for me is that there is a mismatch between characters and plot. The narrative trope is enemies to friends to lovers, and Viv and Tiny’s relationship moves believably through those stages.

The problem is that the characters evolve beyond the constraints of the plot. The set-up has Tiny being cruel to Viv (rude and belittling, not physically abusive), while Viv grapples with self-esteem and uncertainty about the nature of their feelings for each other.

However, both characters are much too actualised as characters, and self-aware as humans, for the plot to be believable.

Tiny is a genuinely good guy. Despite his traumatic back story, it’s out of character for him to behave so nastily for no good reason. I can imagine him being withdrawn or distant, but not as cruel as he is.

And despite the toxicity of her previous relationship, Viv is capable, confident and intuitive. Her does he/doesn’t he uncertainty about Tiny rings false.

I think this is a bit of a new writer wobble. Neve Onoros is so good at creating believable characters, that they out-grew the plot. Perhaps without the confidence to let her characters drive the narrative, we end up with terrific characters who buck the storyline.

I suppose it’s the writerly equivalent of the second album blues.

I enjoyed the book anyway; there’s lots to like. The pranks are genuinely funny without being mean; the pacing doesn’t flag, and, having owned mastiffs myself, I loved Murphy.

As seems to be the way of this series, there are some toe-curling kisses, but closed door otherwise. It doesn’t detract from enjoyment of the book, and makes for a nice change of pace from super-spicy MC books.

Editing could have been better (it’s “another think”, not “another thing”), but it seems good editors are like good men nowadays.

This is a low-key, well-written and engaging novel, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

i liked the first one in this series enought to check out the next one especially since MC books without all the graphic violence and sex are rare but i dnf'd. plot holes, inconsistenices, bad grammar, whole sections repeated, the constant repetitive of how hot the mmc is is eye roll inducing, needs an editor and it's pretty obviously ai assisted at this point. can't support this 'non author' for having chat gpt writing their book. also the fmc was ridiculous, hopelessly drooling constantly over the Tiny, the mmc, who is mean and rude not just that but also really unprofessional. its' supposed to be a grumpy/sunshine dynamic but the 'author' missed the mark on that completely and i hate pathetic fmc who pines over a guy even after they see them with other women. it was implied in the last book that all the men apart from the mmc of the first book are manwhores, should have known better.. not my cuppa, girl get some self respect.

Rare Gem of a series

The characters are so easy to love. The story plot is engaging. Best of all no graphic sex scenes. This is a series I wouldn't mind recommending to everyone.
