Rate this book
Owen Barrett lived a busy life as a professional blacksmith and ren-faire entertainer.

His enjoyable life was ripped away from him when a princess from another world summoned him into her realm. She desperately needs Owen to defeat her evil uncle and the dark magical blight that’s plaguing Dawnstorne.

As a military veteran and volunteer firefighter, Owen hopes to be equipped to survive in this new world. Laara, a golden-eyed, half-elf mage, and Caliste, the resistance’s fiery leader, aid his arrival as the threats increase. If he’s going to make it to the castle to save Princess Malia and kill Duke Syagrius, he'll need all the help he can get.

Got transported to a world that is effectively being turned into undead. So I have to save the princess from the evil Duke so that I can get back home to my horse. - The book. Got pretty tired of him whinging on and on about that fucking horse the first time he said it, let alone several chapters later where his only motivation seems to be getting back to that horse. The horse matters more to him than people, apparently. Yeah, I love my animals too and they are family, but I wouldn't trade a life with people I care about for them. Especially when they'd be just fine in the care of someone else. This dude acts like the horse die without him. Just what I want to read about in a harem book. Another reluctant MC who collects women he doesn't really want and/or deserve. If you want me to give a fuck about the horse, then you had better spend more than a few sentences with the damn thing actually present in the story and not just a mount the guy misses a lot. At least make it convincing to me. At every step, aside from the blight, this guy LOVES this new world he is in. One horse ≠ A Life worth going back to in a world you are less suited to. Plus, if the princess can bring him from there, why can't he just ask her to bring the damn horse to the world he is in now when the trouble is over and why does this not occur to him?

Not a bad book, but...

The title of the book is extremely misleading. The book really has nothing to do with blacksmithing. Like... Less than ten pages? Very silly.

Other than that, the characters were... One dimensional, and boring, but I've seen worse. The world was confusing, and very poorly described. One place goes from a random small town with walls, to suddenly being the only farmland on the continent, and the only town left standing? With no explanation or anything. Just, one page was one way, and the next it was another. Also, you can say something, describe something, or have your characters think something, once, and readers will understand and remember it. You don't need to repeat it a dozen times.

On top of that, the authors grasp of how forging and metalwork happens, and functions, is extremely poor. Like they read the first paragraph on wikipedia and just ran with only that information.

Over all, I did manage to finish the book, but I have zero interest in reading the second or any further ones.

A great read!

Fantastic book! The descriptions are really good, and I feel as if I'm transported to the scenes. And it made the action scenes extra spicy. I can't wait for book 2

Why?

DNF. Why do authors pit MCs against impossible to believe antagonist or situations. There is no way to believe a unprepared, non-magical person is going to defeat an arch mage who has enough power to destroy a world without a liberal use of dues ex and plot armor. I hate dues ex because it means that the person I am reading about doesn't deserve my time. the MC could be replaced with a rock as long as dues ex is used.
