Sandy Raven has a husband who spoils her rotten, and kids that are just a hair’s breadth away from perfect. She’s addicted to House Hunters International and has never missed an episode, though she acknowledges that she could never live in most of those countries because the houses are just too small. She is also addicted to Starbucks’ Chai Latte, and never passes up an opportunity to have one.
Sandy grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast with sand between her toes and perpetually frizzy hair. Which is why she now lives in the middle-of-nowhere Virginia, in a place with minimal to moderate humidity (for perfect, non-frizzy curls,) rolling hills and farmed forests. The only downside to that is the temperamental satellite internet and the closest Starbucks being a thirty minute drive away.
Home is a renovated old farm house she shares with her hero husband, in the foothills of Blue Ridge Mountains, where she’s owned by more cats, dogs and horses than she cares to admit to. She’s a long-time member of RWA, and is a member of VRW and the Beau Monde. Second to writing is her love for her horses. She practices natural horsemanship, and loves to ride her barefoot Tennessee Walkers on the trails and in the woods around her home.
Another romance novella I really liked. This one reminded me heavily of those super romantic Regency romances I read back in the 90s. I liked the quirkiness of the relationship dynamics: the age difference, the wicked aunt, the house party setting. I gobbled it up quickly and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
This book (novella really) began promisingly enough but then it did not quite deliver - as I had hoped. I am a complete sucker for May-Dec romances especially a silver fox H. Here, he's 52 and she's 28 - a good age gap, enough to make it a valid May-Dec and she's not ultra young as well. And I was prepared to give it 5* when I began reading but...
You know, I have started reading the first book of this series some months ago and it was quite heavy and dark, so I decided to wait for the right moment to get back to it. And this week I saw this prequel and thought to myself, why not?
We don't usually see the romance of a 50+ hero, and in this sense I was quite moved with some of his speech, that he wouldn't live for long but the few years ahead he would like to make the heroine happy.
I would have loved for this story to have more depth tho. And I would have liked that some things had not happened, like some physical aggression, not caring about what others would think and so on and so forth. But overall it was an ok beginning and made me want to get back to the fisrt book of the series again.
Oh and if you hadn't realized, Miss Amelia did indeed land a Duke hehehe
I read two of the other books in this series and have to say I need to go back and refresh my memory. I really enjoyed this book for what it was. The story is about the Duke of Caversham or Marcus. Widowed for 10 years, he swears he will never marry again. This sounds like a typical historical romance but what makes it different is the age difference between Marcus and Amelia.
Amelia is soon to be 29 years old and following her fathers death becomes a companion for her horrible aunt. It is actually her aunt who sets her cap for the duke but when Marcus and Amelia meet it changes everything for both as the duke will not rest until he finds out her true identity. He only knows her by miss and she calls him sir. He is a stickler for most of societies rules. He's not a saint but come on ladies would really want him to be?
I loved how Marcus did not tolerate any BS from her aunt. I mean when it came to protecting Amelia, god was he awesome. He did not just defend her to her horrid aunt but reunited her with lost loved ones. I find it really attractive when a H goes above the call of duty to bring joy into the h life out of purely wanting to see her happy. The only problem I had was how the author continued to throw out the age differences all the time. The duke was 52 yeah, we got that !
When they glance at each other, when they are in the arms of passion. I realize it is important to set a scene but it should have been about more than the difference in their age. There were several times SR had Marcus telling Amelia they would not have many years together. How romantic is it to put I love you and will do anything for you but only for a limited time? Now it is not put like that but for what I found romantic was disturbed by this constant reminder of being short lived.
Even though we know what is to be it does not erase the damage done by harsh, lingering doom yet to come that was continuously being thrown at you. Non of us know how long we have left on this earth but should we focus on that at every turn and in every moment of happiness? That in mind let me share the H is a modern thinker in the bedroom.
The man acted at times as though his days were numbered but was rather kinky when it came to Amelia. There is one scene after they make love that Amelia actually thinks that she hopes he did not kill himself from over exhaustion. Amelia had no modesty when it came to being with him. The girl is a virgin but is very open with her nudity and her sexuality. It is not distasteful but it is graphic.
I liked the general idea and the two together were sweet but the fault was truly being able enjoy a story that kept promising a time of loss and sorrow. The dreamy couple was tainted by this and I had to take some stars away for it. I think the author writes really well and there are no grammar or spelling mistakes like you find in some of the other novella's. Enjoy!
Miss Amelia Lands a Duke by Sandy Raven is a 2014 publication.
This set up sounds great, but for some reason the story fell flat for me. Amelia is a strong woman who takes a position as a paid companion for her Aunt Katherine after her parents die and her brother goes missing. Yet, it would seem Katherine is in financial straights herself and has set her sites on snaring the Duke of Caversham. Forcing her way, with Amelia in tow, to a party where the duke is in attendance, her plans backfire in a big way when it is not Katherine the duke falls for, but Amelia.
Katherine is venomous in her scorn and jealousy of Amelia and her in outrage over her foiled plans. She was perhaps the strongest character in the story since she did manage to evoke at least a little emotion from me. Otherwise, I didn't feel any connection to Amelia or Marcus and had little interest in what has happened to Amelia's brother, Henry. The sex scene seemed obligatory and wasn't true to Amelia's character to that point. The story was uneventful and rather bland. 2 stars
Amelie and Cav/Marcus. Amelie was not your usual miss. For one, she is 28 and therefore totally on the shelf. For another, she does not simper or get starry eyed. She's practical with no false idea of her place yet she's also no push over. She's been treated like dirt by her aunt for the last time. Her aunt, well now there's a strange character. Still not sure what to make of her. If I were Marcus I would have made her life a misery just out of principal. Amelie is dragged to a house party by her aunt, even though they weren't invited. All so her aunt could try to entrap/seduce the widower Duke of Caversham (Marcus). Marcus is in his early 50's and has two children, so he has no intentions of marrying again, and certainly not to a grasping liar like Amelie's aunt. Now Amelie however, she intrigues him. I thought the official blurb for this one was pretty misleading. It wasn't nearly that formulaic. It was actually quite sweet and romantic. I love a sexy older man, and Marcus was perfect. It was more like a Cinderella story and although slow to start, it was quite satisfying.
When purchasing the box set Scandalous Summer Nights in which there are seven stories by seven different romance authors I did not know if I would find one or two stories I would like. I have to say I am not disappointed with my purchase, most of the stories in the box set are wonderful. Now having said that let me tell you my thoughts on Sandy Raven's novella, Miss Amelia Lands a Duke, which is a prequel to her series the Caversham Chronicles.
The heroine of our story is Ms. Amelia Manners-Sutton a 28 year old spinster, who is the companion to her aunt,a social climber who intends to wed Marcus Renfield Halden, the Duke of Caversham even though she is not out of mourning. While at a house party, Amelia hides from her aunt's schemes and runs into a gentleman who intrigues her. Of course, it ends up that it is the duke, but Amelia doesn't know that right away. Our hero of the story is Marcus Renfield Halden, the Duke of Caversham. He is a widower who is 50 year old, wealthy and extremely powerful and still a very dashing handsome man. Caught kissing a man she believes within her reach socially, Amelia discovers he isn’t. Not only that, he is same man her widowed aunt has been stalking all season. When the Duke of Caversham realizes who Amelia is, he does the honorable thing and offers for her. Only Amelia’s pride will not allow her to be forced onto any man in marriage. Cav must then convince Amelia that she is the only woman he wants for the rest of his life.
This was a wonderful short read romance with a cute story and delightful characters. The sensual level of this story I would grade a 7. I would recommend Miss Amelia Lands a Duke for an entertaining read.
Wonderful... 😍😍 Definitivamente me encantei com essa introdução a Série The Caversham Chronicles.. Perfect!! 🎀😍😍😍 #BoaLeitura! #GoodReading! 🎀📚🎀
So a prequel to the Caversham chronicles, which I have read, now may have to go back and read how this marriage turned out. Another free book which turned out well. Just a little misunderstanding, but did not dwell too long. A poor spinster of 29, companion to a terrible aunt, meets a man in the garden. They have a lovely time, but she later finds out he is the Duke her aunt is pursuing. Marcus is 52 and has been a widower for 10 years. He did not think he would remarry, but something about Amelia calls to him and he sort of lets them be found in a compromising position, but of course she doesn't realize he really wants to marry her, hence the misunderstanding. All works out in the end and she becomes stepmother to Ren, and mother to Sarah, and sister to Henry who plays a role in the future books.
Well told, but never have been and never would be a fan of instant love. I do like the idea of the older gentleman getting smitten with a significantly younger spinster. Could have been better had it been a full length novel.
It is difficult to build character relationships in a novella, and this one did not. It was melodramatic and unbelievable. I liked the concept, but the book did not work for me. It is a good thing the story was short, or I would probably have not made it all the way through it.
Miss Amelia Conquest a Duke is the first publication of the author Sandy Raven in Brazilian lands. The author was invited by Babelcube Inc. to have her novels translated and published on Amazon in e-book. Sandy, who is a sympathy, accepted the challenge and here I am at her invitation, leaving my impressions on the prologue of the series The Chronicles of Caversham. The book is short and easy to read. It has a captivating story and at the same time different from what I am used to reading among the authors of the genre. The history of this book reminded me a lot of those historical novels of the New Cultural that were published in banking format. But at the same time it is hotter, since the author inserts in its history some scenes more spicy.
Amelia is an interesting, intelligent and at the same time still innocent character in certain matters, because although she is already 28 years old, she is still a virgin and has always lived in the interior of England. Far from the glow and vices of high society. When embarking on a trip as an escort of her aunt to a party in the house of a noblewoman, she has the opportunity to glimpse another world and to get to know better the rather kind personality of her aunt, who is always making little of her and disdaining her in the presence of others as if she were merely a companion and not a relative.
During the days of the party, Amelia learns in a totally surprising and unusual way the duke of Caversham, a mature man, still beautiful and very shocking. The Duke soon finds himself interested in Amelia whom he intends to court. But Amelia is afraid to displease her aunt, who was the party just thinking of seducing the duke and marrying him.
Marcus, the duke is a smart and very experienced man, since he's 52 years old. I had never read a book before, that the young man was that old, and to my utter delight, he owes nothing to any other good man. Beautiful, smelling and totally seductive.
really unbelievable premise. Orphan with no way to take care of herself, meets a handsome Duke and after one conversation, he kisses her and wants to marry her. She says no, because they don't know each other. come on... she's 28 and a spinster, but he thinks she's luscious and must have her. then a lot of sex. I guess it doesn't take much to write a "romance".
Lots of mixed reviews with this short story. I quite liked it for such a short book. I really enjoyed this. Altogether, a nice story for a #0.5, to get series going. 3.5☆
I understand that it's a prequel novella, however, it is heavy on light smut and very very light on plot. 27-year-old spinster meets 50 plus year old Duke at a house party they fall in love sleep together and tie the subplot of her missing brother up with a pair of letters.
This is a steamy Regency. Poor Amelia if it wasn't for bad luck she'd have no luck at all. Her mother died when she was young, her father; the youngest son of an Earl worked as a bookbinder, her brother; a student at Oxford, was kidnapped by the press gangs, then her father died of a broken heart. Upon her father's death she learns he has borrowed heavily to pay for her now missing and presumed Navy bound brother's tuition. Destitute, she turns to her remaining relatives and is taken on as a companion by her disingenuous, conniving aunt, one who forgets to pay her.
When she and her aunt Katherine arrive at a house party to which they have not been invited; which humiliates Amelia further, her attitude has her aunt dispatch her to the servants quarters and deny her participation. You see her Aunt is on the hunt for her third husband the widowed Duke of Caversham.
During a walk in the maze she discovers an older man sitting alone; neither is inclined to reveal much and after a brief but interesting conversation she vanishes.
When they meet again he kisses and compromises her and in saving her from discovery instead infuriates her aunt. He makes plans for Amelia without discussion and she is not pleased nor amused. Will their June - November romance last (she's 28 he's 52)
A short and sweet story despite the tragic end for these two lovers. In Caversham's Bride you'll learn what happens.
Marcus, the 8th Duke of Caversham lost his beloved Lizzie ten years ago. He never thought to marry again for he was sure there was never to be a woman who made his feel the way his Lizzie did.
Amelia, a young lady with impressive bloodlines yet destitute and in the service of her aunt who is a wretched piece, arrives.
After meeting her in the garden he is intrigued, and caught, by the spell of this curious woman. A kiss is not far behind, as is the nosy, and awful aunt. Marcus is in love but Amelia is sure she is not. She is nearly 30, and has nothing to offer a duke. Of course, Marcus is just over 50 but Amelia makes him feel young again.
I love both Amelia and Marcus and I am very annoyed with the author for what she does to them in Caversham's Bride.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Ms Sandy Raven weaves a dreamworthy setting during the fabulous Regency times. The plot is promising until I ran across all those sexual scenarios. I felt my IQ drop with each related turn.
A gentleman would not dare proposition a lady as if a cast away mistress and bed her! I was disappointed. This book is smutworthy at best, not what real ladies and gentlemen would do in real life era.
This book should be labeled as Regency Fantasy Romance because it just ain't happening!
I found this book to be an okay read. The story was easy to follow and seemed pretty well planned out. My biggest complaint is that it lacked depth. There were so many things touch we d on but never expanded on. Also, the author needed a good Thesaurus, if I had read "his bride to be" or " her husband to be" one more time, I think I would have scrapped the whole thing. How about betrothed or fiance.
An insipid heroine and a high handed Duke (of course he's a Duke) fall in love after exchanging three sentences worth of dialog, then get married and have a baby. This felt written by a rule book; there's no personality, style, or point to it.
If what you are looking for is steamy regency Romance, then this is possibly the book for you. However, be warned, the sex (not the love making) pretty much drives the story and motivation of the protagonists. Otherwise, the secondary characters are a bit on the overdrawn side.
Resenha postada originalmente no blog Oi, gente!
