Deux récits fantastiques mettent en scène des joueurs de Blues dans l'Amérique profonde.
La première histoire, Blues, réalisée en Italie pour la revue Corto Maltese en 1990, nous conte les errances d'un saxophoniste noir dans l'Amérique des années quarante. Les petits malfrats de la mafia ne pèsent pas lourd avec leurs Smith & Wesson lorsque retentissent quelques notes de Blues.
La seconde histoire, L'héritier, dessinée en 2007, est une création originale pour les Editions Mosquito. Le maestro nous plonge dans les racines du Blues à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, quand Vaudou et musique jouent une semblable partition

Toppi's art style is known for its sophisticated compositions and an unmatched ability with hatching.
Young Toppi left his medical studies in the early 50's to pursue a career in illustration, which lasted until his death at age eighty. His illustrations were featured in many Italian newspapers, magazines and books.
Toppi also developed a comics career since the middle of the 60's. His body of work in comics is mostly composed of short stories on a wide range of subject matters, often in a historical or fantasy setting. Toppi's stories appeared in a number of Italian comics magazines, from the ones devoted to kids such as Il Corriere dei Piccoli and Il Giornalino, to those targeting a more mature or larger audience, like Sgt. Kirk, Linus, alter alter, Corto Maltese, L'Eternauta, Comic Art, Orient Express. For the latter magazine Toppi created in the 80's his only recurring comics character, called Il Collezionista (The Collector).

Incredibile. Ogni pagina è un capolavoro. Le due storie sono intense e atmosferiche.

This book barely needs dialogues. The storytelling, the beauty of the pages... they already tell all there is to the stories. It's more of a visual journey than a story, in the end. Yet the dialogues add that beauty, and that mysterious aura, that so perfectly veils the music you can almost hear from these pages. It's no small feat, and one I only saw one artist be able to summon. That was Dave McKean in Cages.
Sergio Toppo is indeed one of the greatest artist the world of comics has ever seen.

Deux chouettes histoires habitées du fantastique morbide et du dessin absolument génial de Toppi.
J'ai une légère préférence pour la seconde, mais la première est quand même sacrément chouette.
