Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov.
Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson's popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon.
I really did not enjoy Treasure Island. Even though it is considered a classic, I thought the story felt boring and outdated, and it was hard to stay focused while reading it. The pacing dragged in a lot of places, and the old-fashioned writing style made it even more difficult to stay engaged. I can see why some people appreciate the adventure and pirate themes, but for me, it never really caught my attention or made me want to keep turning the pages. Overall, it just didn’t hold up compared to more modern stories, and I struggled to stay invested in it.
