Love in Laandia #2

Royal Retelling

Rate this book
What if Prince Charming fell for the wicked stepsister?

As the youngest prince of Laandia, Gunnar has spent his life traveling the world, free from royal responsibilities. But when he’s summoned home for the biggest event of the year—the royal wedding—he faces an unexpected dilemma:

He needs a date.

For most, this wouldn’t be a problem. But for Gunnar, his date must meet two criteria: she can’t outshine the bride and groom (which rules out his glamorous jet-setting friends), and she must understand that this is strictly a one-time thing.

Enter the town’s beloved Sea Queen—until her sharp-tongued stepsister, Stella, insists it’s a terrible idea.

Once childhood friends, Gunnar and Stella are now more like sworn enemies. She curses instead of curtsies, has an endless supply of insults, and never misses a chance to ruin his day. Gunnar would love to ignore her—except the more time he spends with Stella, the more he realizes he might be in the wrong fairy tale… and he may have chosen the wrong sister.

Royal Retelling is the second book in the Love in Laandia series—a sweet, enemies-to-lovers royal romcom filled with sizzling banter, soft blushes, brotherly bonds, royal responsibilities… and rescuing every dog in Laandia.

This was a quick, PG read.

Two things right off the bat:

1. I didn’t read the first in the series so I was nervous I’d be a little lost. That wasn’t the case!
2. It was more of a PG read, which isn’t bad, just not what I usually read. I initially wasn’t sure how I’d like it, but ended up finding it really cute and refreshing!

I enjoy a slow burn and this delivered. I also really liked that the male character (Gunnar) was more of the sunshine, while Stella was the grump, if you want to put them in that trope. It’s usually the other way around. Gunnar chipped through her icy exterior and I was here for it!

One thing that was a little much for me was all the characters involved. I usually like a good cast of characters but some it didn’t feel necessary to include.
Also, the ending. I wanted more!

This is a four star for me. It was genuinely refreshing to read a PG romance as it’s been a very long time for me. Something about a slow burn that makes me super giddy- I thought this one was done well. I’m sure this is aimed at a younger audience than I but as the characters are around my age it didn’t feel too young for either.

I really like both characters. I liked Gunnar right away. Charming, honest, kind and his POV was easy to read and felt realistic. I like his relationships with those around him- especially Camille.

I enjoyed the way Stella’s POV changed as she started to melt. I think she is funny and determined and forthright. She reminded me if an old friend of mine and that was nice.

I would have liked to see a bit more romance towards the end. I think that typically I’d comment that the switch from enemies to lovers was too sudden but actually that’s no true here. I just wish that, once Stella came to her senses, that there was more of the two of them before the ending.

I am now going to go back to read the first book in this series as I am now fully committed to Laandia!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Three Birds Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I went into this one blind. I hadn't read Love in Laandia #1, but I gleaned enough of what happened to be able to read this one. Prince Gunnar's older brother Odin is getting married to Lady Camille of Saint Pierre, and they need him to pick a date yesterday. With his reputation as the charming playboy of the four brothers, it shouldn't be a problem, right? Except Gunnar doesn't agree with that notion; he isn't a playboy and doesn't want to feed into the gossip mills about it. To make matters worse, he only earned that reputation because of an old friend-turned-enemy named Stella Laz. As the local owner of a pet rescue, she has despised the royal family since she was a child, and she especially hates Gunnar. As luck would have it, a chance run-in with him at a coffee shop prompts him to take Stella's Cinderella-esque stepsister to the wedding with him.

It was a fast read, for sure, but I definitely think this would be more enjoyable if I had read Royal Rumble first. I think it also suffers a bit from the expansive cast of characters who don't get a whole lot of room to breathe in the book. For example, Camille's wedding party is her, Princess Lyra, Gunnar's ex-girlfriend Kate, someone named Edie, and Gunnar's date. Lyra, Kate, and Edie barely get any screen time except for Lyra to be mean to Stella, and I have no idea who Kate was beyond being Gunnar's ex-girlfriend. I also barely got to know the other brothers beyond Gunnar; Odin, Kalle, and Bo were barely in the book to the point where sometimes I had to go back to remember who they were.

Overall a fun read, but I think it suffers from its large cast and could have benefited from slimming down a bit. Shoutout for having a non-binary representative as a supporting character though.

After reading the first book in the Love in Laandia series, I had always been intrigued with Gunnar so you can imagine my surprise when I realised that the second book, Royal Retelling, was based around him and a character we’d yet to really meet.

I went in with reasonably high expectations after flying through the first. The denial the two characters had from the start was highly amusing but made the journey between them even more enjoyable!

Dual POV was a positive as I loved seeing both sides of them falling in love with each other.

The relationship between Stella and Sophie was cute because it’s so refreshing to see such a healthy sibling relationship where they support each other and I would say they are more best friends than just sisters. I loved them!

But Gunnar and Stella … *sighs* I fell in love with them from the beginning. Stella was very stubborn but around Gunnar, he slowly chipped away any of the hardness she’d built up over the years from her Mother influence and revealed her soft center. The writing played a big part in me being able to read through this so fast! The writing flowed so easily and I felt connected with majority of character (excluding a certain step-sister of course.).

I think I will definitely pick up another book from this author and I cannot wait for another Love in Laandia tale, hopefully it’s soon.

This story takes us back to Laandia and this time we got to know Prince Gunnar better and his fave kind of enemy Stella. Prince Odin's wedding is coming up and Stella's stepsister will be Gunnar's date which Stella doesn't like at all. Ever since her father left his family to work for the King she hates everything about the Royals. Stella and Gunnar can't be in the same room together and I love Stella because I can be as fierce as her. It was so much fun to follow their flyting 😉

This story is full of fighting, drama, fun and of course romance. For me it's a perfect mix and I couldn't stop reading. Well done Holly and I'm looking forward to Kalle's story next?

While I haven’t yet read the first book in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and spending time with these characters. I’m always a sucker for a good, cleaner romance, especially when it has “enemies” to lovers like this did! The relationship between Stella and Gunnar felt very real and I appreciated that, though it played with some usual tropes, it was still unique. If you’re looking for a fun romance, check this one out! Meanwhile, I’m going to be checking out book one and waiting for book three in this series. I received a free eARC of this, and am choosing to leave an honest review.

There were way too many typos to ignore in this book. But other than that, I loved Gunner and Stella. It was a great story of redemption and forgiveness. Looking forward to reading about the rest of the royal siblings.

this is a sweet, easy read of unexpected love. a spin off inspired by cinderella except the prince falls for the stepsister instead.

the writing is witty and has a lot of pop culture references making it the perfect YA read.

stella is such a loveable character too and you really do feel for her at times. the book touches on some really relatable topics.

however, there is a lot of characters so it can be hard to follow at times.

regardless, it’s a super fun, light hearted read that was easily digestible.

thankyou to victory editing netgalley co-op and net galley for the ARC. all opinions are my own <3

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

For the young Prince Gunnar, he knows that he will never be king of Laandia, and he hasn't had to prove his worth to the people like his older brothers. After a rumour destroyed his relationship, and turned him into the playboy prince, Gunnar has been travelling the world and focusing on enjoying his life. But his brother is getting married, and as one of the groomsmen, he needs to come home, and find a date to be in the wedding party. The only catch: his date can't overshadow the happy couple, and they need to know that there's no chance of a relationship coming out of it. So the 'Sea Queen', and daughter of the mayor of Laandia's capital city would be perfect, right? Not when her stepsister is one of Gunnar's oldest childhood friends, who blames the entire royal family for her parents' divorce, and hates Gunnar with a passion. Stella needs to suck up her hurt feelings, and come to terms with her own guilt over the past. But as she and Gunnar are forced to spend more time together, it seems like the past might come back to bite them.

I think I liked this book even more than the first one. I always love enemies-to-lovers romances, especially when the couple has a past like Gunnar and Stella do. Stella is hiding the fact that she was the one who spread the rumour about Gunnar being a playboy, which led to his undeserved reputation. However, she feels vindicated after her father and older brother left the family to continue to serve the royal family, and she hasn't seen or spoken to them since. She was hurt and suffering, and took it out on the wrong person. When they spoke about it, I loved how understanding Gunnar was. He was definitely someone misunderstood by many, and he wanted to help, but was seen as someone unable to comprehend what was needed. He and Stella worked perfectly together, and I'm glad that Stella was proven not to be the evil stepsister, but was rather the heroine of the day!

It was an interesting story. Unfortunately it fell flat in some areas. Character building was lacking. They seemed to be stuck on what was wrong with them and just kept repeating the same things over and over.

Gunner finally started to grow but it went nowhere. You didn't get to see him make those changes into a respectable prince.

Stella grew and was able to find peace with her dad. I don't really think she done it for herself as she did it for Gunner.

You get bits of the other prince's personalities but not much. We didn't get much of the king, yet he was mentioned throughout the story. Would have been good for him to be introduced in this book as some didn't read the first book. So, idk if he makes an appearance in that one either.

I do wish there was a more indepth conversation between Stella, Sophie and their dad. Not just a scene that pans out.

- Enemies to lovers
- Cinderella vibes
- non-binary representation
- Clean Romance
- Dual POVs

Royal Retelling is the second book in Kerr's Love in Laandia series. This book features Prince Gunnar Erickson, the youngest son of the king of Laandia, and Stella Laz.

When they were kids, Stella and Gunnar used to play together at the castle. Stella's mother, Signe, was a lady in waiting for the queen, as well as her best friend. Stella's father, Duncan, was advisor to the king. That was then, though... before Duncan walked away from their family and moved himself and his son Spencer (from a previous marriage) to the castle. Signe, Stella and Sophie, Stella's younger sister, now have nothing to do with anyone in the royal family.

Today, Gunnar is known as the playboy prince. He travels the world and lives a life of leisure. Stella mostly keeps to herself, and spends all her time at Catch A Pet, a rescue shelter she set up. On the rare occasion when they cross paths, Stella does her best to keep her distance or throw a variety of insults his way. Gunnar doesn't really know what happened to cause their rift. He just knows that one day they were friends, and the next day they weren't.

Gunnar is currently in Laandia as his brother Odin will be getting married. He doesn't want to bring a date, but was informed that it wasn't an option. He isn't interested in a relationship so he needs to bring someone who won't swoon if he asks. When he runs into Stella and Sophie at the local cafe, Coffee for the Sole, Sophie suggests he ask their stepsister, Daphne. Daphne is beloved by the town. She is sweet and kind and pretty. Since she has no romantic interest in the prince, it seems like the perfect choice. Gunnar is thrilled that he no longer has to worry about who to take however Stella is shocked that Sophie threw their stepsister to the wolves.

Over the coming days, Stella and Gunnar keep bumping into one another. She slowly starts to see him in a different light...

I won't say more as I don't want to ruin it, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book. Kerr's Love In Laandia series is so much fun. I love the characters and the dynamic. There's some grumpy/sunshine going on here, as well as a smidge of second chance romance. Stella is a gem, but you need to have patience to get past her rough exterior. I love her humour and that she speaks her mind. She is of the firm belief that respect is earned. Gunnar is charming and fun and easygoing. The two are definitely opposites, and are so good together.

The author has invested a lot of time introducing and developing her characters. While some may feel like there is too much going on, I love it as I know that these introductions are like Easter eggs and readers will learn more as the series progresses. I'm already looking forward to Royal Rogue!

Thank you Netgalley and Three Birds Press for providing me with a copy in exchange of an honest review

After Royal Rumble, I was ready for another installment in the Love in Laandia series. I thought I would enjoy this book more than the first, for we had already been introduced to most of the characters, and Gunnar seemed like the most fun out of the bunch. However, whilst I enjoyed this book, it took me a bit to get into it (comparing it to book 1, where I was intrigued from the beginning), which surprised me a little, but once I did, it was just as fun as the previous one.

I have to say that thinking back about this book, I am surprised I did not enjoy it more or got into it faster, because all the elements and twists in the Cinderella-esque story are great additions and when considering them. One reason why I needed more time with the book is that the romance took a while to blossom. That also happened in book 1, but for some reason it did not affect me as much then. Scenes between the two main leads were frequent, yet they were still stuck in the past so it was slow to happen, which was a bit frustrating sometimes. I kept glancing at the % status, worried about when the romance would start. I actually liked how everything developed; Gunnar asking Stella's sister to be his date and Stella helping her with the preparation, whilst getting entangled with Gunnar was quite fun, I liked seeing these elements play out, but I also thought more romance would come out of it.

I love reading about siblings. We already knew about Gunnar's siblings (I thought they'd appear more than they did, especially given the context) but I really enjoyed the dynamics between the three sisters, more than scenes between the boys. Their interactions and scenes together were quite fun. Family played a big role in the sequel. And though we knew about Gunnar's family, Stella's has a lot to offer and hits all the spots: a sister who is also her friend, a step-sister who she is trying to help and protect, a selfish mum, a dad who abandoned them who wants to reconnect and his son. So many dynamics and options here alone!

I wonder if book 3 will continue having so many fairy-tale-esque comparisons and elements, and how we willl expand the relationships within Laandia.

This is the 2nd book in the Love in Laandia series by Holly Kerr. It was a wonderful treat to revisit this world and the heartwarming characters within. This can be read as a standalone, but reading the first book, Royal Rumble adds a great introduction to the family and this world. Circle back if you only have time for this one now.

Here we find Gunner, one the princes of the small kingdom of Laandia. Gunner is a playboy who travels extensively searching for the latest adventure and adrenaline rush. Gunner is back at the castle for the wedding of his brother Odin's wedding (whose story was told in the first book). Gunner is without a date and asks Daphne, the towns' Snow Queen. Gunner isn't romantically interested in her but needs that date. Instead, we find its the stepsister, Stella, that attracts his attention. Stella and Gunner were childhood friends who felt out after Stella saw Gunner leaving another woman's house while dating her friend. She is disappointed in Gunnar and finds the perceived infidelity unacceptable. She freezes him out and is less than impressed with Gunnar and his antics even now.

The banter between the two is hilarious and ultimately appealing to both characters and the readers. This Cinderella-like tale is wonderfully written, and I found the characters charming. Stella and Daphne have challenging relationships with their father and it's here that we see the most growth for both.

Gunner realizes his feelings are romantic and he must decide whether to risk losing Stella by keeping his current lifestyle. His realizes that his love for Stella is strong and worth holding on to even as the couple go through challenging times.

This book is well written and the characters engaging. I loved the inclusion of the non-binary characters as it brings an important societal representation that is just now being told.

Thumbs up for this series and the books released to date. The rest of the series is definitely on my TBR pile!.

This is the second book in the series, a royal retelling of Cinderella where instead of the prince falling for the beautiful Cinderella, he falls for the punk stepsister who hates his guts
.
Prince Gunnar returned to Laandia for the wedding of his brother Prince Odin but he is the only one of his brothers who does not have a date to the party
.
Finding a willing young woman is no problem, but finding one who understands that she is only going as a companion is another story.
.
That's why when he think of Daphne, he realize that she is perfect, the local beauty queen has no problem being her arm candy for the wedding but unfortunately she is accompanied by a dark stepsister
.
Stella may wear dark makeup and sarcasm on a daily basis, but she is also the only animal advocate on the island, running a all kind of pets shelter that Lady Camille, his future sister-in-law, loves to go to.
.
The closer the wedding days get, the more time he has to spends with both sisters and he begins to remember that things had not always been this way between them, when they were kids and best friends.
.
I tried to reduce a little the plot, but so many things happen in this book as in the first, and I felt that it opened up in so many ways that it surprised me with the reaction and sudden change of opinion of the characters.
.
Maybe it's because it's been a long time since I´ve read new adults, mostly it felt toward the young adults way, which seemed to me to come out of nowhere or rushed. I don't like that the characters magically change their minds, I felt that there were better ways in which the dialogues could develop without everyone ending up hugging and happy.
I also didn't think it was good that they named details and famous names every time, I felt that it was not necessary, that it was understood who was who in character form without so much detail and returning to the same detail later, he´s a playboy she is a sunshine barbie and her stepsister is sarcastic dark grump…I get it in the first mention
.
Pros and why I gave it four stars, I couldn't stop reading..and this a big “yes!” To me , I wanted to know everything, I'm obsessive but there is something about the political or social plots of like gossip girl that catches me every time.
The characters, Stella a solid ten until she got close to the end and everything rushed to end well, the chemistry between her and Gunnar, every time they were together, I thought it was excellent and with a really good slow burn
.
That said, I'm going to wait for the next book in this series because I'm dying to know what happens next.
.
.
.
Thanks to Holly Kerr and her team for give me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and voluntary opinion.

Royal Retelling is the second book in Holly Kerr's series, Love in Laandia. Set around the royal family of the fictional country of Laandia. Estranged friend, estranged family, a royal romance and a royal wedding - definitely had me intrigued.

I have to be up front. I found myself having to be very careful with this book. It didn't take me long to realise that at least the female main character was going to be a struggle for me - I get why she holds a grudge but freaking hell, it was exhausting. She could be exhausting. Because I read this book in the right frame of mind to put up with an exhausting character, I enjoyed it a lot and rated it 4/5 stars. However, I know after a couple failed attempts to get into it, in the wrong frame of mind I would be giving this a 3/5 stars.

The story is about Stella, whose father works at the Laandian palace, though she is estranged from her father and brother after her parents' divorce. She once grew up and was friends with the princes, the princess and the other children of dignitaries until everything change. And Stella became bitter and has spent the last nearly 20 years hating everything royal.

Prince Gunnar is known as the playboy prince. He's made some stupid mistakes when he was younger, but he is more than his nickname. However, his reputation doesn't help him when he needs to find a platonic date for his brother's wedding. Gunnar doesn't know why Stella hates him or what happened that she drew away from all their friends. But it ends up that Stella's stepsister agrees to be his date and that throws Gunnar and Stella together. The forced proximity means that they might find a way to talk, in between the continual fighting, usually instigated by Stella.

I've been perusing the reviews on this book to see if other people had the same issues with it that I did. For the most part, they do not. I am a sucker for fairytale retellings, but unfortunately this is not a good retelling of Cinderella (or even a retelling of that story, so... great!)
First thing: I haven't seen anyone point out how misogynistic this book is. It relies heavily on everyone's favorite trope "not like the other girls." Our main character, Stella, wears all black, likes dogs more than people, and hates the royal family. But Kerr makes a point several times to emphasize that she has a "slim waist" and "pleasant curves". Okay, great thanks Holly.
Aside from all of that: let's talk about the "evil stepmother." I think we as society are far past the point of the evil mother, who is obsessed with appearances and status, and makes her daughters miserable. All the while, the kind, good-hearted father is cast aside and made to look like the bad guy. But actually! It's the mother who is evil! Bet you never saw that one coming did you, dear reader.
This trope relies on age-old misogynistic tropes, and it boils down to the "stepmother" character being a conniving bitch. Apart from just being sexist, it's really worn out. I thought this was a retelling? Kerr couldn't have figured out any way to reframe the mother character into not a caricature of a literal Disney villain?
I don't know anything about Kerr, but from the way she writes, it seems like she is a millennial (nothing wrong with that, just something that I noticed). She loves to name drop famous people-whether they be famous models, actresses, or even politicians! I gave this novel a lot of grace because it's self-pub, but some of the writing choices in this were too much to overlook. It feels like a relic from a bygone era (2015).

I received an ARC copy of this novel for an honest review.

This was a very straightforward read but just wasn’t for me.

There is a long time spent introducing the idea of a history between the protagonists but doesn’t really give any examples of this. For saying they were close there are few memories that are looked back on. We are told they were once close rather than this being developed in the relationship and actions of the characters.

Additionally, a lot of time is spent on explaining the links between the families/step relations that leaves the main relationship somewhat underdeveloped and rushed. Similarly, the relationship between Stella, Sophie and Duncan seems rushed and without the closure/any resolution with the mother.

The whole character of Daphne (initially nice, naive and idealistic) seems to have been abandoned by the end in favour of a plot device, which I found a disappointing scale goat to get to where the author wanted to be.

I’m also very confused by the cross tropes of this series - more in terms of the characters - the Prince and the daughter of the trusted advisor, who’s fathers just happen to have been rock stars as well as a king and his trusted right hand man? I think this adds to many layers of tropes for me personally.

Overall this was quick read that I’m sure is suited for some readers but just really didn’t suit me.

This was such a fun, wicked, and adorable story about a young woman whose life implodes and her journey back. Stella is a shell of her former life and when Prince Gunnar needs a date to the Royal Wedding and asks her stepsister Daphne, the beautiful sea queen of Laandia she is forced to confront the enemy. Prince Charming the youngest of Laandia’s Prince’s needs a date for his brother's wedding and when he asks the beautiful Sea Queen, he isn’t expecting to have to spend time with her wicked stepsister who hates him, she was once his childhood friend. Sparks fly, the banter is cringe worthy to adorable, and the chemistry between these characters will keep you begging for more. I loved reading more on Camille and Odin, and the other brothers, all the animals they rescue. I loved Gunnar in this story with all his charm and charisma. I loved reading about how Stella rises like a true phoenix and blossoms into who she is meant to be, and finally shows her true self. I loved the twist towards the end that finally brings two opposites together, who were always meant to be and see them shine as one. This is such a fun story to read with all the princes, troubles they get into and animals. I loved it! I can’t wait to read Prince Kalle’s story next. I voluntarily reviewed this ARC I received.

This book was so cute, seriously! If you're into romance with a Cinderella kind of vibe, this is the one for you. No hot and heavy scenes, just good old storytelling with that whole enemies-to-lovers thing. It totally took me back to A Cinderella Story with Hilary Duff. I felt like I was back in high school again reading this, giving me all the cozy feels. I even caught myself reading it with a British accent in my head, by the way. Some people said there were too many characters, but I don't think so. I think the cast was just right to make the story pop. I really connected with Stella and Gunnar, they were both really cool in their own way. And how about the prince falling for the "evil" stepsister instead of the usual bubbly one? But hey, Stella wasn't evil, just troubled, depressed. She definitely needed therapy after her parents split. And turns out, she wasn't the real evil stepsister after all. I would have liked more longing and romance though. More of that slow burn between Gunnar and Stella. More romance at the end. Even though it's not a hot and heavy read, it would have been even better with that. Overall, I'd give it 4 stars because it was a fun, quick read.

Royal Retelling by Holly Kerr is a different take on Cinderella, with the Prince falling for one of the step-sisters.

Stella and Gunnar have known each other literally from the cradle and now Stella cannot stand the Prince and he's just living his life, traveling, going to international functions, and not really taking life very seriously.

When his brother gets married he needs a date to the wedding and it sets off his reimmersion in Stella's life.

I enjoyed that she wasn't fawning over the Prince, was a bit surly (just a WEE bit), and that it wasn't an easy love story. Their background together made their falling in love believable and didn't require a lot of build-up, as the history was already in place.

It took me a bit to get all of the characters straight, but I enjoyed them. Each secondary character had something to give to the story and made it a richer book.

I haven't read any of the author's other books, but I'm going to do so now.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.

A little bit of Cinderella mixed with childhood best friends turned enemies to lovers, and a dose of all the sass, snark, and charm I’ve come to expect from the author produced this book I did not want to put down. We’d gotten to see a little bit of what Prince Gunnar was about in the first book, but this one took us deep behind the castle walls to show us the sensitive soul behind the charming playboy mask. Stella reminded me of a hedgehog: soft and squishy in the middle with a dense armor of spikes protecting that vulnerable underbelly. I so badly wanted to cuddle her close and promise to make it all better for her. Instead, the author gave her Gunnar and made her come to some really important realizations for herself. I adored watching these two spar with one another. This was another couple proving out my theory that hate and love aren’t actually opposites. Now that we’ve seen one more royal match come to pass, I can’t wait to see what it will take for the next Erickson sibling to take the fall.

Royal Retelling is my first read by Holly Kerr, and it definitely won't be my last! I loved this story so much! Laandia is a place I would love to visit - small town vibes, fun interactions with townsfolk, and what appears to be a very caring and family oriented ruling monarchy. I'm a sucker for a good bantering enemies to more relationship, and this filled my bucket to the top. I especially appreciated that the misunderstanding that lead to the leads status as enemies was not caused by either of them - and that when they discovered the truth of the miscommunication they were quick to resolve the underlying tension between the two.
This story has a great forgiveness arc, a fun cast of characters, and is definitely worth adding to your TBR today! I read an early copy of the book, and look forward to reading book 1 in the series to get caught up ASAP - what a fun closed door royal romcom!

Can I move to Laandia? Please?

This story is great! I couldn’t put it down. I love that the royals are super integrated with the citizens here and I can’t wait for future stories. I feel like this story could definitely exist in the same universe as “The princess diaries” so if you loved that definitely dive into this series. Stella is such a spunky character and I love it. She is feisty but will deeply root herself in her beliefs (which can be good and bad). Gunnar is know as the “playboy prince” and while we didn’t see a ton of it in this story, we did get to see a man that finally wants to be seen as more especially to a certain someone. I will say I wish we had seen Gunnar adopt a pupper in this story but I loved this story and the twists and turns at the end.

This is a clean, dual pov romance. It is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand alone novel but why would you want to do that when you have the 4 princes (and hopefully princess) of Laandia to read about.

* I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from Hidden Gems. *

I'm glad that I read the first book before this one because it gave some depth to some of the things going on in this one. Although, it wasn't necessary to have read the first book to understand what was going on. This book was a friends to lovers story with a little bit of animosity in the middle. Due to misunderstandings and misinformation, Stella and Gunnar spend a lot of time trading barbs and being wary of each other. I like that when Stella makes her confession that Gunnar took it very well. He was refreshingly mature which doesn't usually happen in stories like this. I liked that Sophie and Stella had a good discussion with their dad but I wish there was more to it and that their mother had had a little bit of consequences. There are also lots of dogs and some cats. I love animals, so I liked that. Overall I think this was a lovely read.

🦋 BOOK REVIEW 🦋

When I say I am writing this review in the middle of dog sitting and dealing with an estranged father this week, this book just hits differently. Holly was able to somehow know that I was going to need to reread this book this week while sick and dealing with someone I left many years ago.

Stella needed a Gunnar, and I am so glad she got him. Just like Gunnar needed a Stella who balanced him out. Their relationship is literal goals. The way he treats her is what I want from my prince when I am struggling. The understanding they both have for each other's weaknesses is so beautiful!

To say I cried is an understatement. Holly did an amazing job of pulling me into the story and immersing me into a whole new world!

I loved this book! I was a huge fan of Royal Rumble (book 1 of Love in Laandia) and could not wait to read Royal Retelling (book 2) and it did not disappoint! It was fun to watch Gunnar and Stella change and grow as people in order to become a couple. I liked each character individually, but they were even better together. The story alternated between their points of view and this structure provided readers insight into what each character was thinking. The other characters add depth and interest to the story and I hope to see them featured in future books.

This book is perfect for readers that like banter, enemies to lovers, and sweet romances.

Thanks to the author for providing a copy for my honest review.

Arc Review:
Overall Rating: 4 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tropes:
- Friends To Enemies To Lovers
- Banter, Snide Remarks, and Disagreements
- Closed Door Rom-Com
- Flyting (Flirting x Fighting)
- He Falls First
- No Third Act Break Up
- Mr. Sunshine and Ms. Grumpy

I haven’t read a book without spice in awhile but I actually really enjoyed this book.
I loved how princely Gunner was but also he wasn’t overly princely. Honestly I found Gunner to be completely charming and funny. I’d probably fall for this prince myself.
This Book had some of the sweetest moments, I don’t think I’ll ever get over them all. I’d love to share my favourite moments but spoilers so I suggest you just read the book and experience them yourself.
