im in denial that this series is complete 😭 emma if you’re seeing this, i will shout from the rooftops for all eternity that you can write infinite books in this series, and we will love them 😭😭

this book was AMAZINGGG and really hit me in the heart, more so than the other Deep Waters books

Fortis and Alexia were such a dynamic couple, both with captivating arcs, who really went through it to come out on the other side. Fortis is such a stoic, touch-starved widower who distanced himself from all connections besides his son, UGH. and Alexia, who was genetically created as a warrior to protect the “originals” that ultimately f*cked up the world enough to force humans to live under the sea, DESERVES THE WORLD. (i love this book so much i’m writing in completely run-on sentences idc i can’t shut up)

tears were shed. hearts were thawed. jaws were dropped.

not only is this series amazing for romance & spicy mermen, but the commentary is so needed. human greed is a plague and it’s crazy how this isn’t even that far off from what could be reality. i can only hope that if we go down that road, we have some hot mermen to help out our future generations.

SIDE NOTE: emma said on her post today that if we all yell together, she might write another Deep Waters book so pls join me in singing her praises 😭

Mmmmh, a fine ending and a good story, but not completely sure about it.

There is nothing wrong with this book, but I just didn't really connect with it. That might be completely on me, as I did a million other things while reading this, so I was also not invested in it. I did enjoy the main characters, they were both just greatly written and very enjoyable to read about. The romance story, let's just not make it because then it has a lot of problems lol, but I enjoyed reading it. The characters from the previous books played a role in this one, but one so small it could almost be neglected. I feel it could have been more important. Also, I just didn't vibe with the whole clone story in the end.

Alas, it was a nice ending to the series, but I think the first one was great, and then afterwards, it wasn't really my taste anymore. But I'm curious to see what Emma Hamm will publish in the future.

I don't think I'm one of those girls who can read monster romance lol - not here to yuck anyone's yum, but that's just not for me? I am partial to shifter/omegaverse romances though!! So probably just sticking with those.

Alexia - talk about a favorite FMC. I don't have much more to say than I love this entire series & cannot recommend them enough. Read this, and then re-read, because like fine wine it gets better with each sip!

Alexia is the badass of a woman we needed. She had a dark and dangerous life and little control over its trajectory when the book began. Fortis was living for the future and entrenched in his hatred of humans. He was a dedicated father. Both Alexia and Fortis were closed off from emotion, but for very different reasons. They were able to open to each other, though it wasn’t an easy process. The dangerousness of the ocean and the life or death situations both MCs found themselves in made for a hair raising ride.

Spice: 2.5/5

Triggers: violence, gore, death, involuntary medical experimentation, drugging of MCs, battle, discussion of child abuse including brainwashing, animal attack, hunting/fishing, apocalyptic situation, drowning, captivity, confinement, unethical genetic modification and experimentation, grief from death of spouse, mentions of past torture, speciesism, involuntary memory reading

well, here goes one of my most anticipated reads of the year - and i have to say, i am a little disappointed.

it was good, i can’t say that it wasn’t. the characters were well-structured and felt like real people. the plot was engaging and the chemistry was there. with that said, there was just something missing, an element that the first two books had that made me love this series and an element that this story just lacked.

the plotline followed the same pattern as the previous books, so it was not the most original, but still, it works for me. but in contrary to preceding stories, it wasn’t as absorbing or engrossing. it was enjoyable, but i was not devouring it and i didn’t really have any issues with putting it down. in addition, the romance was just okay in my opinion. like i’ve mentioned, i could feel the chemistry, but the relationship between alexia and fortis just wasn’t as immersive as i hoped it would be. one of my favourite things about this series was the insane level of slowly built tension and the utter obsession these characters had with each other. the slow-burn element was present, but the tension just wasn’t as intense as i expected. it was good, but i absolutely loved the first two books in the series and had very high expectations that this story just not reached. i guess i just expected much more from it.

also, there was just a little too much of other woman plotline for my likings. fortis is still missing his wife a lot, there’s a lot of mentions of her and he even talks with her ghost - it’s clear that he is still very hung up on her. i understand that he grieves the lost of her (although it has been two decades), as she was his partner and the mother of their son, but i just don’t like to read about other women in my romances. it bothered me a little, the way he still cared about her deeply. i wish the author just kept a few mentions of her and left it at that.

I couldn't wait for Fortis' story to finally be released. I kept my expectations low, since I was disappointed by the last book. But sadly, I don't feel any connection to the characters at all and they have no chemistry (Just like Maketes and Ace). The writing is also... not good. There's lots of telling instead of showing. Lots of repeated phrases, inconsistencies and typos.

I'm also not a fan of Fortis constantly thinking about his dead wife and that he'll join her in the afterlife. Don't get me wrong, it's actually quite sweet that he still thinks about her but so damn unfair towards Alexia. It's as if she is just a fun little distraction until his death.

This series has had me in a chokehold beginning to end. I’m devastated to see it go, but I’m also glad Emma Hamm can no longer unlock hidden water related fears (for now).

Alexia might be my new favorite FMC in this series.

Call of the Fathoms might be my new favorite of this series? I'm not sure yet.
Alexia and Fortis were amazing. I think this was a nice way to wrap up the series, especially since the previous book felt a bit dull.
There are still some typos in this, and a few grammatical errors, but I'm not expecting merfolk smut to be peak literature, and you shouldn't either.

Alt titles for this could have easily been: Deep Waters: Eat The Rich, or Deep Waters: There Are No Good Billionaires. But in the most poetic way possible! Every moment felt perfectly earned for the series. It’s also a story of strength and grief and rebirth. I devoured it like a Humboldt squid. Gosh I love this series! I’m so sad it’s over, but also…is it over?

Alexia was created for one purpose: protecting the Originals. Through genetic experiments they have managed to live for hundreds of years. The same science that created Alexia, a human with enhanced size & strength. One day a captured undine - a depthstrider - manages to escape the city. She chases him into the deep, determined to bring him down. Fortis has known for years that he would change the tides of war…and die in the process. All he’s wanted to do since then is get there. No time for relationships and definitely not with humans. Alexia though is unlike any human he’s ever met, and Fortis soon begins to wonder if this warrior woman will change everything he thought he was.

From the first chapter I knew Alexia would have my heart. Told her whole life she was nothing but a weapon, forced to numb her emotions…I loved that she was a fierce warrior, and also revealed such openness and vulnerability. And a dry sense of humor. Everything made her such a great match for Fortis.

And Fortis. After three books of his grumpy elusive prophet act, it was a blast to get his perspective. The way he was so down bad but too blind to see it for SO LONG. Watching his walls come down one by one was perfectly paced. His relationship with his son was also highlight.

Expect the same spice level as previous books. Alexia is the least experienced other FMCs (another delightful choice by the author!) Fortis enjoys teaching her more than he thinks he will….

As with previous books most of the “traditional” action happens at the end. Alexia was the perfect FMC to take us through, yielding a combination of violence and poetic justice to finish out this series!

Thank you to the author for this ARC!

It feels bittersweet knowing the story has come to an end but this will always be one of my favourite series ever.

🧜‍♂️ Alexia! What a woman. So strong both physically and mentally and I loved reading about her discovering how to live. Such a perfect FMC.
🧜‍♂️ Fortis was exactly how I expected him to be and I adored his grumpy and mature but secret simp side
🧜‍♂️ Emma Hamm perfectly weaves together world building, slow burn tension and overarching political intrigue

Absolutely adored this book and I read it within two days.

I received this as an ARC but all thoughts are my own.

What a perfect wrap up to one of my all time favourite series. Nobody does monster romance better than Emma Hamm. These undines are all so special and loveable in their own quirky ways and it’s so bittersweet for this series to come to an end.

Call of the Fathoms was everything I hoped it would be, in fact it suprised me

We dive deep into the making of Tau, the backstory of Alexis (our FMC), and we also see the Depthstriders in more light. I was waiting patiently for Fortis’ book ever since COTF was announced and his story is one of my new favourites in the series.

I don’t want to spoil anyone but I will say a few things that I really enjoyed.

The moments where Alexis and Fortis were getting to know each other were some of my favourite, the push and pull between them was electric and that made the romance well worth the wait. I loved hearing more about Fortis and his life, it was endearing to learn just how much he loved his son.

Alexis is unlike the other FMCs in the series, she’s strong (both physically and mentally), but she was also lost in a way that meant her learning the truth set her free. This made her character development really special.

YES, the spice is well worth the wait (thank you Emma for feeding my fantasies) and I also loved seeing some familiar faces, this rounded off the series really nicely.

Overall, one of my new favourites books and one I know that all you fellow monster lovers out there will DEVOUR.

Way heavier on the insane sci-fi than the other books in the series, to the point where it did start to bog me down a little. But I loved the dynamic between Fortis and his son, as well as the not so subtle commentary on human selfishness destroying nature and as a result ourselves.
Tragic lack of Daios in this book but the author made up for it by making the female mc a massive genetically engineered supersoldier who is 6 ft 7.

A great ending to a fun series!

I loved this story. Alexis and Fortis had great chemistry together, and I enjoyed the plot. It was a little darker than some of the previous books, and I really enjoyed it. I’m sad that the series is over, but excited to read any new books that Emma puts out!

Such a beautiful ending for a beautiful series! I can’t help but hope that maybe another story will join in eventually but it was delightful. Alexia and Fortis have the best enemy to lover energy and I loved seeing them rediscover life and themselves with each other. I’m glad to see past characters participate in the story and I am very satisfied with this final installment. As always, Emma Hamm spins magic with her worded yarn.

Dont know what it is but i can never finish a book series nowadays. I will LOVE the first and second book and after that i just will think they suck.
The plot was plotting so hard in this book i feel the actual romance part of the book was just a afterthought. I got bored and the overarching plot of this series stopped being interesting in book 2.

But i will say i managed to read 70 % before i lost interest completly, Echoes of the Tide i Dnf at 100 pages.

We return to the Deep Waters series for one last grand adventure, one that places Fortis at the forefront as he faces off - and falls in love - with his greatest adversary yet, the genetically modified and absolutely formidable human, Alexia.

I was so hyped to see Fortis take center stage and he did not disappoint! I loved getting to know this being at his core. It was so easy to engage with his POV. Fortis is a character who sees so much, but upon meeting Alexia eventually comes to realize just how little he truly sees. His connection with her broadens his perspective in so many enriching ways, further elevating his character as a whole.

It took me a while to connect to Alexia, and in a way it makes sense- she's not a natural being, she's not been raised with kindness, she's been raised to be without feeling. Which is why it hit me like a crashing wave when she began to simply feel and I realized, oh yes I do connect with you, Alexia. I may not relate to this character but my heart bled for her. My heart sympathized so greatly with all she has suffered. Her isolation, her loveless upbringing, her de-humanization. Alexia has had her life continuously suppressed, and yet her soul stays resilient.

Her relationship with Fortis gives her all she has been robbed. She begins living, truly living. To see her worth, her value, her very heart. Their relationship is so delicately built, block by block, until we see them for their masterpiece they are. Tow tortured souls ready to give up their lives realizing they have so much left to live for.

Emma Hamm has made an incredible series with Deep Waters. The overarching plots throughout the interconnected stories has paid off so greatly. Every couple stands on their own, unique in character and arcs, that allows the story to feel fresh upon every installment. I am so impressed and in awe of this series. One of my favorite favorites, without any single doubt.

If this is goodbye, it ends on the most beautiful note. But there's still story left to tell if Emma Hamm ever decides to return. The door to the main event may have closed, but oh my gosh the windows that open by narrative's end have me quietly optimistic this isn't quite the end.

I have so deeply loved the Deep Waters series and I am so glad to be here as this door closes. Thank you for an incredible journey, Emma Hamm!

And thank you to the street team for this wonderful opportunity in receiving an advanced complimentary copy! I leave this honest review voluntarily. 4.5

3.75⭐️ i can’t believe it’s over! i’ve absolutely adored the time i’ve spent in the big blue sea getting to know our favorite undines and their ladies in this series!

as for this final book- i think the fact that the action packed plot + finally getting so many answers to questions i’ve had since book 1 was so much more interesting than the romance itself… for me was not only shocking but kinda disappointing. i was SO excited for Fortis to finally get his happily ever after (which he did)! but honestly i wasn’t that invested in him and alexia as a couple. i just kept waiting to turn the page so i could experience more plotting & scheming & ass kicking. their romance just wasn’t the most interesting part, like, at all. and maybe that was Emma’s goal while writing this. but it surely wasn’t what i was expecting when i picked this up.

all this to say, it was still a fabulous read. both alexia and fortis had tremendous character development, and the ending was super satisfying for sure. i think i just wanted this series to go out with an epic love story bang. ill of course still continue to read Emma’s writing, as i’ve loved every world she’s created so far, but this specific book doesn’t hold a candle to the first two in the series in my opinion.

Definitely a lot more interesting lore in this book than in the previous ones, touching on the “Originals”, modified clones, and sea gods. I didn’t feel the chemistry as much with these two main characters, but I believe that is pretty much due to the specific characteristics of these characters. If you enjoy: older MMCs, grumpy x grumpy, or the single dad trope, I believe you will greatly enjoy this book. After reading the epilogue, I’m very intrigued about the next book in the series and will be excited to see how the dynamics change in that one given the unusual circumstances of the characters.

It’s typically the « it’s not you , it’s me » situation.. I’m a sucker for monster romances, so I loved the world , the characters, the writing..
but the romance wasn’t for me .. Fortis was still hung up on his ex-wife and ok to die .. until late into the book .. too far for me .. I didn’t feel their connexion , their love and I missed that .. and because I read for the romance I couldn’t appreciate the book as much as I wanted to.. and believe me .. I was sad about it because the plot was darker and exactly my cup of tea.

I would still read books in this world tho ! It was hinted at the end and I’m here for that ..

This series has had me in a CHOKEHOLD for the past 2 weeks. I read all four books in a bit more than a week and now I don't even want to start a new book/series, I just wanna immediately reread these. I'm not ready to part with the characters, can't believe it's over 🥲

If you ever decide to try reading a monster romance, let it be this series - it has everything; an intriguing plot and worldbuilding, endearing characters and amazing chemistry between them. It was my first one of this genre and I'm so glad I decided to read it 😭🙌🏻
