2.5 🌟
This started as a 4 🌟 but then gave 2 🌟 energy. The concept was interesting, the romantic tension was THERE to capitalize on, this just needs LOTS of fine tuning with the characters & plot.
I liked how the story started. With the princess gaslighting Maia, & then the human king threatening her to go along with their plan, I was immediately tuned in.
I really felt for all that Maia went through. To be forcefully removed from your current life, given as a bride to a mean troll, & pushed into a community that despises her & her kind while fighting back her own fears is traumatic. She was definitely kind hearted & way more forgiving than I thought other characters deserved. I wasn’t satisfied with her character development though. This “wild creature” blooming within her made few appearances & she stayed mostly the same, passive woman all throughout. Yes, she sucked shit up like a champ & showed bravery in some ways, but it wasn’t enough for me. Given all the shit Ragnar & the trolls put her through, I wanted her to feel/show more anger.
Ragnar didn’t grovel enough for my liking. He did & said some mean things, & though nothing was irredeemable to me, he never apologized or truly earned her affection in my eyes. His communication throughout most of the book was terrible… He never gave Maia a warning about how the trolls were feeling towards her after the mountain attack… He didn’t tell her right away that he was taking her to help the injured trolls in a still-hostile situation— well, not until he got too horny to continue walking & then told her right before he asked her to help him with his “need.”
Speaking of which, why is their first time having sex happening in a rushed manner right before a possible fatal fight? It diminished the experience for me. Mind you, Ragnar was just before complaining to his brother how he doesn’t have enough time to see his wife because he’s so busy with his duties, & then while the trolls injured in battle are waiting on them both, bleeding out & burnt, he decides he’s okay with squeezing in time with her just to get a nut in. Not! Romantic!
They also barely spent any time together. Their interactions were extremely sporadic & mostly super short in length; that doesn’t give enough time for believable emotional buildup.
Ragnar kept telling Maia how troll husbands worship their troll wives while not providing her with adequate clothing, personal jewelry, or adequate conversation/time. Contradicting. He’s a powerful healer who can’t tell (for days!) she injured her wrist when he pushed her in the river. Contradicting. Trolls respect & supposedly never harm their women, & respect the bond between husband & wife, but yet Maia was shoved around like a sack of potatoes, had literal stones thrown at her, & had the king threaten her death & offer Ragnar the chance at a new bride. CONTRADICTING AF.
It was also weird how this group of troll wives come to get Maia & tell her she’s one of them now, only to turn their backs on her (besides Huda!). How are you gonna try to sell her on “community” while abandoning her a few days later? Their anger & violence towards Maia was so beyond misplaced that it was a stupid plot point. She literally helped Ragnar heal so many of them, only for them to turn around & spit on that kindness. But the second time around it left enough of an impression for them to permanently accept her.
Why the hell would Gunnar suggest to Ragnar to go to a brothel? Would that be honorable to a troll wife that should be cherished? Why did Ragnar’s reaction against it seem to solely focus on his sexual desire for Maia & not any of his emotional attraction? That was a huge turn off for me, but at least he turned it down quick.
Why did Birger, who appeared to be a pivotal character for Maia’s integration within the community, suddenly disappear? I was loving their weird acquaintanceship & her connection to the giggling plants & wanted more of that.
The silliest part of the story was the troll king’s ingenious plan to save them from their current predicament by finding willing human women… Huh? Nail in the coffin for me, so ~80% I stopped.
