قبل عدّة أعوام خلال قراءة سلسلة خيال علمي شهيرة وبعد أن تحدثت عنها في تويتر؛ سألني صديق، هل السلسلة مكتوبة وكأنها ستصبح فيلمًا يومًا ما..
ومن يومها وأنا أفكر بهذا السؤال كلما قرأت عملًا ما.. هل كتب هذا العمل لنراه يومًا ما على الشاشة...
هذه رواية من هذا النوع، منمقة وجاهزة للتحول لفيلم بلا عمق ولا تمعن في العلاقات، .. أزيل كل ما لا يحتاجه الفيلم أو سيزيد من طوله.
بالتأكيد ستتحول يومًا ما لفيلم رعب وتشويق لا بأس به.

’Trapped forever, I could only wait for the water to rise’

The Ark follows seven friends as they explore an abandoned underground bunker, deep in the forests of Japan. What was originally meant to be a fun excursion turns into a living nightmare as an earthquake traps the group, and a lost family, inside. With the water levels rising, things only get worse as one of them turns up dead.

While nothing particularly groundbreaking, The Ark is a short but sweet mystery thriller, with a unique setting and intriguing narrative. Following the classic ‘locked-room mystery’ style meant that the story was consistently tense, keeping me guessing for its entirety. I did not predict who the murderer was, nor their reasoning, and it meant that the end reveals were satisfying and shocking, particularly the superb final twist.

I think the characters could have been much more developed, as none but Shotaro stood out with his intelligence and ‘detective’ persona. Even Shuichi, the ‘main character’ and pov we followed, was very bland and more a vessel in which to carry the reader from scene to scene, rather than an individual with agency and an effect on the story.

Even so, The Ark was a well-written, engaging and entertaining story that I enjoyed overall, finishing it in a couple of hours. 3/5 stars.

แต่เป็นเราเราไม่นอนในนี้แน่ สิ่งก่อสร้างใต้ดินลึกลับอะไรก็ไม่รู้ แล้วไม่เห็นพูดถึงระบบระบายอากาศเลย หายใจกันได้ไงหว่า

โอเครสมมติว่าไปอยู่แล้ว บังเอิญติดอยู่ในสิ่งก่อสร้างใต้ดินที่รู้ว่าจะตายในหนึ่งสัปดาห์ถ้าออกไปไม่ได้ คุณพรี่เค้าใจเย็นกันดีนะคะ ไม่สติแตกแม้จะมีการฆาตกรรมเกิดขึ้น ถ้าเป็นฉันคงหาทางออกไปทั้งวันเดินวนไปมาเป็นหนูติดจั่น รึมันเป็นสไตล์คนญี่ปุ่น?? รึชั้นนี่แหละที่ประสาท 😂🤣

สรุปคะแนนได้เนื้อเรื่องที่อ่านได้เรื่อย ๆ และมีการหักมุม แหกโค้งที่วางแผนมาอย่างดี

I can’t believe a book with such an intriguing premise could be as dry and bland as this one is. The main issue with The Ark lay in the writing for me. I’m unsure whether it’s the translation’s fault or whether Yuki intentionally wrote in the manner that he did. There’s a lot of spoon feeding involved, almost as if the author does not trust the reader to make basic connections in the slightest. The narration was insufferable in the sense that it kept going in circles. It’s a well thought out mystery with all the logistics of the story sound and clear but the way that it was penned down and written is utterly flat. Same goes with the characters, I couldn’t assign a single distinguishable attribute to define any of them. The only reason this is getting 2 stars and not 1 is because I liked the twist but it did little to redeem the book in general.

A group of friends from university go and investigate a mysterious underground bunker, and find themselves being stuck inside when an earthquake hits and water slowly floods the building.
Shortly after this, murders start happening and the race is on to find out who the murderer is and escape.

This was more of a mystery/ thriller than I was expecting, and very plot-driven. The characters were pretty bland, and I found myself not very interested for the first two-thirds of the book.
The final third, however, I was hooked, as the pace picked up and the various mysteries are uncovered.

Definitely a brain off and enjoy the ride kind of book!

- Bối cảnh vụ án mặc dù không mới lạ nhưng vẫn rất độc đáo nhờ cách thiết lập bầu không khí đen tối, đầy bất an. Tuy nhiên, nếu có thêm hình vẽ sơ đồ chi tiết sẽ dễ hình dung về hiện trường hơn.
- Văn phong ở đoạn giữa của tác phẩm tạo cho tôi cảm giác như đang đọc thể loại Non-Fiction - Puzzles vì hơi khô và thiếu sự uyển chuyển của một tiểu thuyết kể chuyện.
- Những manh mối và bằng chứng dẫn đến việc phá án vặt vãnh đến mức khiến tôi thấy dù xâu chuỗi tất cả lại thì vẫn là những dữ kiện không đủ mạnh, bị võ đoán, nhưng xét theo world-building của tác giả thì chúng vẫn logic và cuối cùng tôi vẫn chấp nhận chúng một cách đầy phấn khích.
- Thứ làm tôi sốc nhất chính là hồi kết của truyện, có một cú twist xuất sắc đến mức tôi không thể không chấm 5 sao cho quyển này, nó làm hợp lý từ động cơ cho đến thủ pháp lẫn từng hành vi của thủ phạm suốt từ đầu đến cuối vụ án. Tôi hoàn toàn không lường trước được cú twist sẽ xuất hiện như thế! Thật không ngờ!

P.S.1. Tôi khá tiếc cho một nhân vật, mà tôi nghĩ ai đọc đến cuối cũng sẽ biết đó là nhân vật nào.
P.S.2. Một lưu ý nho nhỏ cho những ai sắp đọc quyển này là ĐỪNG NHÌN QUÁ KỸ BÌA SÁCH! TUYỆT ĐỐI ĐỪNG! Vì cái bìa đã spoil nhẹ về hồi kết nhưng cũng không đến mức nhìn là ra, vì tác giả Yuki Haruo đã lừa chúng ta quá nhiều.

Twist trời ơi là twist. Lâu lắm rồi mới đọc được một cuốn sách nào twist nổ não đến vậy. Tưởng giải thích vụ án như vậy là đã sốc lắm rổi, tác giả bồi thêm một cái twist nữa ở tận cùng truyện, một cái kết trọn vẹn mà cũng buồn thảm cho số phận nhân vật. Vậy tất cả chỉ là một phép thử lòng người thôi.
Truyện Nhật mà không hề lòng vòng nhiều nhân vật tên tuổi. Mạch truyện rõ ràng, không nhiều lớp lang cầu kì. Nhịp nhanh, gọn. Cảm giác như truyện chỉ để giải trí nhưng thực ra để lại ấn tượng sâu sắc với mình vì những câu hỏi có phần nào mang tính triết lý, và vẫn là một câu hỏi muôn thuở liệu có ai có thể hi sinh để cứu những người còn lại. Nhân vật chính "tôi" trăn trở với câu hỏi này trong suốt diễn tiến truyện mà không có một lời giải đáp. Câu trả lời hiển nhiên là thủ phạm vụ án phải là người ở lại, cho dù không thích thì cũng sẽ bị những người còn lại ép buộc, cưỡng chế bằng nhiều hình thức. Nhưng thực tế, khi mọi thứ diễn ra đến đúng điểm đó, có ai thực sự muốn là người ép buộc một người khác phải thế mạng?

I thoroughly enjoy my time reading this book, especially the 1/3 last part that leads to the ending of it all.

While I can't say that the writing in this book is brilliant or amazing, I can certainly express that I like how straightforward - and, sometimes, even minimal - this author's writing style is in this book.
For the most part, I believe this book can be described as "fast-paced". This fast-pacedness was used very effectively by the author to always quickly set up, or remind us, of the horror and strain these characters are facing in their circumstances.

I also want to praise how good the author manages to deliver the final dark twist at the end of the book.
The dark twist at the end of this book is the definition of how a dark twist should be pulled IMO.
It makes my heart literally sink in; it demonstrates a deep sense of helplessness in those who are on the bad side of it and a terrifying sense of cruelty in those who in the good side of it; it is the type of ending that "you love to hate and hate to love".

I rate this book a solid 4⭐

3 stars for the ending. I love Japanese fiction and crime from all over the world so was attracted to this Japanese crime/horror (but less of the horror). The plot sounds edge of your seat stuff.........a group of people are trapped in an underground facility, then disaster strikes and they find themselves trapped with not only the facility being flooded but there is a murderer in their midst. This sounds like it would be a gripping read however I must admit I found it a tad repetitious, the characters didn't jump off the page and there's not alot of horror. I must say as much as I wasn't blown away by this, some other reader may find it a great thrilling read (I really didn't understand the praise for the huge hit Butter), reading is subjective and so who's to say whether this is a hit or a miss.

One of those Japanese puzzle-box type mysteries with little interest in character development or narrative other than very dry 'if the murderer did A then it follows that B must equal C' back and forths rinse repeating until the final revelation. Having been given so little to engage with, it's similarly difficult to muster any degree of curiosity in the denouement. The premise of people getting stuck in a strange underground bunker with water rapidly flooding it is a good hook and the reason I picked this up- it's a shame nothing much is done with it.

I think I over-hyped this book in my own head and it was a big disappointment. It wasn't what I was expecting at all there was not much character development. The whole situation was very unrealistic people trapped in those circumstances would not behave like that no fear no panic just playing Sherlock Holmes yeah ok 😂🤣
It was Repetitive and quite boring in parts. The ending was meh the twist was decent but still overall meh.

อ่านแล้วไม่ค่อยรู้สึกเชื่อเลย เหมือนอยากเขียนให้เกิดเหตุการณ์อะไรขึ้นก็เขียน ความเป็นเหตุเป็นผลหรือความสมเหตุสมผลที่รองรับมันไม่มากพอ เลยรู้สึกเหมือนกำลังอ่านเรื่องเล่าหรือเรื่องแต่งตลอดเวลา ทำให้ไม่อินไปด้วย (ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้ไม่ได้พูดถึงความเป็นไปได้ของพล็อตที่จะมีเรือโนอาห์อยู่ใต้ดินเลยนะ พูดถึงแค่เหตุการณ์และพฤติกรรมของแต่ละตัวละครในเล่มล้วน ๆ)

ซึ่งพอมันเป็นอย่างนั้นแล้ว ถึงจะมีเหตุการณ์หักมุมหรือพลิกผันอะไรภายในเรื่องมันก็เลยจะรู้สึกแบบ.. เออ เอาเหอะ ก็เขียนแบบอะไรจะเกิดก็ให้มันเกิดมาตั้งแต่แรกแล้ว จะมาเขียนปิดจบให้หักมุมก็ไม่ได้รู้สึกเซอร์ไพรส์มาก

ผังคร่าวๆ ของสถานที่นี้คือชั้นหนึ่งและชั้นสองมีห้องซอยย่อยๆ เป็นห้องพักบ้าง ห้องเก็บของบ้าง ห้องระบบนู่นนี่นั่น แต่มีห้องที่แปลกอยู่ห้องนึงคือเป็นห้องเก็บอุปกรณ์ทรมาณ

ส่วนชั้นสามมีทางออกฉุกเฉิน แต่... น้ำท่วม

ระหว่างนั้นพวกเขาพบพ่อแม่ลูกหลงทางอยู่ เนื่องจากเป็นช่วงค่ำแล้ว คนฉลาดทั้งหมดจึงตกลงว่าจะค้างคืนในสถานที่ที่เรียกว่าเรือโนอาห์

แล้วบังเอิ๊นนนนน... โชคร้าย

คืนนั้นเกิดแผ่นดินไหว ทำให้ก้อนหินกลิ้งมาปิดทางเข้า วิธีเดียวที่จะออกไปได้คือต้องมีคนเสียสละดึงกลไกให้หินตกลงมาและถูกขังไว้ในห้องเล็กๆ ที่เชื่อมกับทางลงชั้นสาม แล้วรอให้คนที่รอดออกไปได้ตามคนมาช่วยเหลือ

ทีนี้ก็มีคนตายไง ตามสูตร

ศพแรกโดนแทง คนที่เหลือก็หาๆ ว่าใครคือฆาตกร จะรุมยำแล้วบังคับให้คนนั้นเป็นคนดึงกลไกเปิดประตู

ยังไม่ทันหาเจอ... เอ้าาาาา มีศพที่สอง ทีงี๊ทำไงละ น้ำที่ชั้นสามก็ท่วมเอ่อขึ้นมาเรื่อยๆ ถ้าจับคนร้ายไม่ได้คงต้องหาคนเสียสละเพื่อให้คนอื่นรอด มันช่างบีบหัวใจเหลือเกิน

ขอโทษที่พูดจาไม่สุภาพ แต่ว่า...

ตัวละครในเรื่องนี้ทำทุกอย่างที่ไม่ควรทำในหนังสือฆาตกรรมสืบสวนสอบสวน ทั้งหาเรื่องมาอยู่ในสถานที่ปิดตายเอย แยกกันอยู่ตามลำพังเอย ฯลฯ

เหตุผลที่ครอบครัวขึ้นมาบนเขาก็อ่อนมากกกกก

แถมไม่บอกเลยว่าไอ้บ้าที่ไหนเป็นคนสร้างโนอาห์ขึ้นมา สร้างทำไม ห้องทรมาณมีไว้ทำไม มีแต่ให้ตัวละครเดาเอง

สิ่งเดียวที่ทำให้อ่านจนจบคืออยากรู้ว่ามันจะเชยจนถึงตอนจบรึเปล่า

แล้วก็เป็นแบบนั้นจริงๆ

เล่มนี้เป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับกลุ่มเพื่อนสมัยมหาวิทยาลัย 6 คน ซึ่งมี ‘ชูอิจิ’ เป็นตัวดำเนินเรื่อง และก็มีญาติของชูอิจิอีกคนที่มาด้วยกัน รวมทั้งหมด 7 คน โดยทุกคนนัดกันว่าจะไปพักผ่อนที่บ้านของเพื่อนในกลุ่มคนหนึ่ง แต่ว่าก็ได้แวะเข้าไปที่สิ่งปลูกสร้างใต้ดินบนภูเขาที่รูปร่างเหมือนกับเรือโนอาห์ซะก่อน โดยอาคารมีทั้งหมด 3 ชั้น (บริเวณชั้นล่างสุดน้ำท่วมหมดแล้ว) และช่วงเวลาที่ไปถึงก็เย็นมากละ ทุกคนเลยตกลงกันว่าจะพักที่นี่ก่อนหนึ่งคืนแล้วค่อยกลับออกไปในตอนเช้า ซึ่งภายในอาคารไม่มีสัญญาณโทรศัพท์ เลยมีบางคนที่ออกไปหาสัญญาณด้านนอกก่อน แต่ช่วงที่กลับมาก็มีกลุ่มพ่อแม่ลูกอีก 3 คนกลับเข้ามาด้วย

ระหว่างที่ทุกคนกำลังนอนอยู่ก็เกิดแผ่นดินไหวขึ้น ทำให้หินก้อนใหญ่ที่ทุกคนเห็นตอนก่อนที่จะเข้ามาในอาคารไถลมาปิดปากทางเข้า ทำให้ทุกคนต้องติดอยู่ที่นี่ บวกกับต้องช่วยกันหาทางออกด้วย เพราะว่ามีน้ำซึมเข้ามาในอาคารเรื่อยๆ ระดับน้ำจะสูงขึ้นจนถึงชั้นที่ทุกคนอยู่ ซึ่งสรุปได้ว่ามีวิธีเดียวที่จะออกไปได้ นั่นก็คือต้องมีคนเสียสละดึงรอกในอาคารเพื่อให้คนอื่นรอดออกไป แต่ระหว่างที่กำลังตัดสินใจว่าใครจะเป็นคนเสียสละนั้น ก็เกิดเหตุ ฆตก. ซะก่อน ทีนี้เลยต้องตามหาผู้ร้ายเพิ่มอีก

เอาจริงตัวเนื้อเรื่องช่วงกลางๆ เราว่ามันออกจะเอื่อยๆ นิดหน่อย แล้วก็งงว่ามันมีเหตุ ฆตก. นะแต่แทบแยกกันอยู่หมดเลย จนเกิดเหตุเพิ่มอีก 2 รอบ ก็ยังไม่วายจะรวมกลุ่มกันซะที จนเกือบจะเลิกอ่านละ แต่ก็กลับมาอ่านจนจบนะ ซึ่งก็แอบพลิกล็อคอยู่ ชอบตอนที่คนร้ายโทรฯ หาคนคนนึงในกลุ่มเพื่อนแล้วเฉลยทุกอย่างให้ฟัง เล่นกับใจสุดๆ รู้หน้าไม่รู้ใจจริงๆ

3 stars, but let me sit with it and i might come back to this.

what i liked - the premise, the fast pace, the process of of solving the mystery, which isn't unbelievable and is done by an everyday person like you and me, so at times the deduction is slow and flawed, but it still works in the end. the final twist was good, i liked the delivery of it, and all the plot points got wrapped up in the end, which is always nice

what i didn't like as much - the writing style. maybe it's the fact it's a translation, and i could definitely tell at times, or maybe the author simply writes like this. it's not like it was bad, but it was very straightforward, with lots of short and matter-of-fact sentences, which I don't enjoy as much. also a bit more backstory could have been given to the characters.

Overall good mystery/thriller/whodunnit, and perfect as a book to read after a long break.

This would make a very stressful disaster movie/ locked room murder mystery/thriller. A real nightmare situation.

Some guy discovers an underground structure months back, then invites his university friends to explore it with him. In the middle of the forest. Where there's no reception, no GPS, no actual map. Because they take such a long time to find it, it becomes the end of the day so they decide to spend the night inside. The whole structure is like a three-storey building, except underground, and there is a main tunnel to crawl down about ten metres deep before you reach Basement 1, and it has a boulder functioning as a door. Basement 3 has an emergency exit, but because the whole floor is flooded, it's not accessible. A family of three suddenly shows up so they all spend the first night underground together.

The next morning, an earthquake knocks the boulder out of place, trapping all nine of them underground. The water level is also rising at a really fast rate, leaving them about a week to find a solution. The boulder can be mechanically lifted by pulling a winch from inside a room, but whoever does it will end up trapped and doomed to die a dark, watery death all by themselves, so obviously nobody wants to be the sacrificial lamb. To make matters worse, people start getting murdered in gruesome ways, and the murderer has to be one of them. But who? And why?

Personally, I would not (1) go to the middle of a forest, let alone (2) sleep in a weird place at least 12 metres underground when I can take the rations and sleeping bags out and get back to civilisation even if I had to walk all night. Surely the forest at night is better than entering your own grave right??

ตอนจบหักมุม แต่เส้นอารมณ์นิ่งมากตอนรู้เฉลย

เรื่องย่อ: เมื่อกลุ่มนักศึกษา 7 คน ตั้งใจเดินทางมาสำรวจสิ่งปลูกสร้างประหลาดใต้ดินที่มีโครงสร้างคล้ายเรือ แถมยังมีชื่อว่า "เรือโนอาห์" ที่เกี่ยวข้องในพระคัมภีร์ไบเบิล (Genesis) อีกทั้งยังได้พบเจอครอบครัวที่พลัดหลงเข้ามาในป่าลึก จึงตัดสินใจร่วมกันว่าจะค้างแรมที่นี้ก่อนเดินทางกลับในวันรุ่งขึ้น ระหว่างนั้นก็เกิดเหตุการณ์ไม่คาดฝันจนทำให้ทั้ง 10 คน ต้องติดอยู่ในสถานที่แห่งนี้ และการที่จะออกไปได้คือต้องมีหนึ่งคนสละชีวิตเพื่อปลดล็อคกลไกทางออก ไม่รู้ว่าโชคชะตาเล่นตลกหรือความตั้งใจหมายมั่นที่มีแต่แรก เพราะในระหว่างที่ทุกคนช่วยกันหาทางออก ดันมีเหตุฆาตกรรมต่อเนื่องเกิดขึ้นในสถานที่ปิดตายแห่งนี้ คนร้ายจะเป็นใครถ้าไม่ใช่ 1 ใน 10 คนนี้...

ในแง่ของการดำเนินเรื่องนับว่าเอื่อยเฉื่อย เนิบช้าจนดูไม่เข้าท่ากับการที่ตกอยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่โดนขัง ไม่มีทางออก แถมยังต้องสละชีวิตใครสักคนเพื่อปลดล็อคกลไกให้คนที่เหลือออกไปจากที่แห่งนี้ได้

หากเราลองคิดว่าเป็นเรื่องจริงก็นับได้ว่าต้องแบกความกดดันมหาศาล กลไกความคิดต้องทำงานอย่างเต็มระบบ แต่ละคนคงมีอาการแสดงออกแตกต่างกันไป เช่น นิ่งเงียบ โกรธ โมโห โวยวาย หรือแม้กระทั่งยอมรับความจริงจนไม่มีกะจิตกะใจจะหาทางออก แต่ในเรื่องนี้ทุกคนดูใจเย็น เหมือนแค่ไขปริศนาใน escape room (เกมปริศนาหาทางออก) ถ้าไขปริศนาไม่ได้เดี๋ยวมีคนมาช่วยเอง ไม่พยายามทำอะไรจริงจัง แค่ทำไปตามสถานการณ์ ไม่มีแม้แต่ซีน breakdown ของใครสักคน เมื่อต้องรับมือกับเหตุการณ์ที่กลืนไม่เข้าคลายไม่ออก เหมือนเป็นเพียงแค่การดำเนินเรื่องยืดเวลาให้ถึงตอนท้ายแล้วเอาปมที่สร้างไว้นิดหน่อยมาเฉลยทีเดียว

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเพื่อนหรือครอบครัวไม่ได้โดนกล่าวถึงหรือลงลึกมากเท่าไหร่นัก เหมือนปูมาแค่หลวมๆ ทำให้ไม่อินกับใครเป็นพิเศษ ใครรอดก็ดีใจ ส่วนใครตายก็รอดูเหตุผลว่าทำไมจึงเลือกคนนี้เป็นผู้สละชีวิต

มีส่วนที่ชอบอยู่บ้างตอนที่คนเขียนว่าด้วยเรื่อง 'ชีวิตของคนที่ไม่มีคนรักเหมือนจะมีค่าน้อยกว่าเมื่อเทียบกับคนที่มี' อย่างการที่บอกว่า

∘ "ในหนังก็มีเนอะ ฉากคนที่น่าจะโดนฆ่าร้องขอชีวิตว่าตัวเองมีครอบครัวบ้าง มีคนที่รักอยู่บ้าง แสดงว่าถ้าไม่มีครอบครัว ไม่มีคนรักก็ฆ่าได้ใช่ไหม บนโลกนี้มีสิ่งที่เรียกว่าสิทธิมนุษยชนอยู่ แต่ถ้าจะเลือกผู้เสียสละจากโลกใครสักคนในนั้น คนที่มีคนรักน้อยที่สุดก็น่าจะโดนเลือกใช่ไหม..."

∘ "คนที่ตายโดยทิ้งคนรักไว้กับคนที่ตายโดยไม่มีใครรัก ไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ใครจะตัดสินได้นะว่าแบบไหนอาภัพกว่า"

ถามว่าน่าติดตามมั้ย ตอบได้ว่าน่าติดตามอยู่ เพราะอยากรู้ว่าจะหาทางลงยังไง ถึงอย่างนั้นก็ไม่ค่อยตื่นเต้น ไม่มีอารมณ์ร่วมในการลุ้นไปด้วย อ่านไปเพื่อรอดูตอนจบเท่านั้น ส่วน plot twist หักมุมจริงๆ ไม่คิดว่าจะลงเอยแบบนี้ พอที่จะสมเหตุสมผลอยู่บ้างไม่มากก็น้อย ไม่งั้นคงได้จบที่ 1 ดาว

สรุปอ่านได้เรื่อยๆ เพลินๆ ไว้คั่นกลางระหว่างหนังสือเนื้อหาที่หนักหน่อย

you could kind of guessed the direction of the end of the book while reading.
however, the way author create the atmosphere of banal eeriness throughout the whole story was enough to make me indulge in the story.
I do not like romance happened tho

Pros:
- I enjoyed the twist at the end
- the isolated and eerie setting

Cons:
- the characters were not fleshed out at all. I find it really hard to believe that most of these characters knew eachother at university, as they acted like complete strangers. The author didn’t delve into any shared history besides a crush that one of the characters had on another, and even that seemed poorly written. For that reason, the emotional impact of the ending just fell flat for me.
- I’d have liked to know more about the bunker, its purpose (beyond what we were told), why it was abandoned etc.

Haruo Yuki's The Ark has what can only be called a high concept premise. Seven freinds spending a weekend in the countryside are led to a remote, underground bunker. With a family who also somehow find the place, they settle in for the night. The next morning all hell breaks loose, one of their party has been murderd and an earthquake has sealed them in. Water is rising from the bottom level so they onyl have a week to find a way to escape. And then there are more murders.
This is a set up that is designed to create tension - a small group of people trapped in a claustrophobic bunker where they discover, among other things torture implements, people dying one by one (a la Agatha Christies classic "And then There Were None") and a ticking clock of risign water and dwindling supplies. But unfortunately, it was a drag. The characters have very little to them so feel disposable, readers are unlikely to care that they are being killed off. And whats more none of the others seem to care either. You would expect a sense of panic, even after the first murder but they all treat the killings and the need to escape as intellectual excercises - puzzles to be solved.
The Ark will be for those readers who can accept its outlandish setup and don't mind paper thin characterisation and are into fiendish puzzles anchored by even more fiendish twists. This feels like a book that would work better on screen, where actors could bring some depth and differentiation to the characters and the action can move fast enough for viewers not to worry about the massive plot holes.

An elevator pitch, or rather an underground bunker pitch with potential, and a big twist at the end. A group of university friends are stuck in a weird underground 'Ark', with no way out, and a murderer is on the loose. Admittedly, you don't expect much character development in this type of popcorn thriller, and perhaps it was the translation, but the trapped group were indisginuishable and bland. I also would expect them to react to a headless corpse with a little more horror, but maybe that's just me. Before too many pages in, I felt like I wanted to move a massive boulder over their escape hatch and condemn them to a slow death, and hey, guess what, the author agreed with me.

4.5 stars! The spectacular ending pushed this one all the way up for me. For the most part, this is an Agatha Christie-esque mystery interspersed with high stress moments of peril. Although I didn't fully figure out whodunnit, I found this to be a very fair - if gloriously convoluted! - puzzle. I have faith that with careful reading, you could solve it as you go. Our POV character has a touch of Hastings's incurable romanticism about him, too, which I found quite charming.

Không còn gì để nói về cái plot twist này nữa. Quá đỉnh chóp! Cảm giác cái sự chán, lặp lại và lê thê mà 2/3 cuốn sách mang lại là do tác giả cố tình viết vậy để làm nền cho cái plot twist đặc sắc này. Sáng tạo, thông minh, không hề gượng ép, giải thích được hết động cơ giết người rất hợp lý.
Lâu rồi mới có plot twist có thể bù đắp cho cả cuốn sách và khiến mình phấn khích tới vậy.

Cuốn này về mặt cốt truyện thì giống trinh thám phòng kín cổ điển , cũng hơi dông dài , được cái twist quay xe hết tất cả vấn đề từ đầu đến cuối
