Cori Edwards only wanted a nostalgic scare when she popped in an old VHS. Instead, the screen pulled her straight into a blood-soaked 90s slasher.
Now she’s stuck in a world of cheerleaders, jocks, and killer clichés—where the body count climbs faster than Blockbuster late fees. To make it out alive, Cori has to outwit the tropes, rewrite the ending, and survive a psycho with a taste for meta mayhem.
Fans of Scream, Totally Killer, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer won’t want to miss this wickedly funny horror ride.
What a fun pallet cleanser. This was honestly hilarious and kept me entertained from start to finish. If you enjoy scary movies I highly recommend reading this one! It’s fast paced , has likeable characters, and will make you feel like you’re in a slasher movie from the 90’s with a sarcastic flare of being able to laugh a long at so many of the usual mistakes people in scary movies make. This made me laugh out loud and I loved how it felt like the entire book was a thought bubble over my head while watching every scary movie I’ve ever watched and thought “really??? They’re yelling out hello is anyone there??”
I’m so glad I came across this one on kindle unlimited. Definitely recommend!
This was a quick little read that I found quite enjoyable. The concept of a magic VCR that lets you jump into the world of the tapes you rented from a video shop is a cute and very unique idea. I really enjoyed the little cliche and slightly predictable moments of the main character Cori trying to point out how obvious it is they’re in a movie to the other characters the whole time and all of the basic movie tropes that are often explored in horror/slashers.
I liked this book however I have been unclear as what kind of review to give this book. At first when I started it I think I loved all the meta stuff however by the end I would still watch it as a movie just not like a good 80s or 90s slasher that you can replay. I think my issue was it did not go hard enough in the cheese that could a 90s slasher and maybe also the ending was bonkers (felt more like a 90s horror comedy) again I enjoyed the book just did not leave me feeling ready for the next summer slasher book . If you live slasher movies it's funny as hell just don't let some of the characters errors bother you.
Junanji meets Scream. This was a super short, super fun and cheesy read. Perfect to get you into spooky season. We follow a teenage girl obsessed with vintage culture who gets sucked into an old VHS slasher movie (with appearances from many of my favorite 90s heartthrobs). There is a bit of a twist at the end. If you’re looking for outstanding literature, this is not for you 😂😂 butttt if you’re reading for vibes and want to hurdle into fall (with an optional PSL in hand), this short, fun read is for you
The book was catchy and good. It really was a fun time having the main character guess what was doing to happen next following the horror trope guide. Love the late 90’s references and all the former characters of decades past. Quick and easy read!
This was so fun. I absolutely loved all the 90’s references and of course the horror references. I don’t know which tape she put into the VCR at the end but whatever it was I hope we get to see it in a sequel! I could read 50 of these. Completely loved it.
