I had the opportunity to read FWB as an ARC, and I must say that workplace romance is one of my favorite themes in literature. One aspect I particularly appreciated about this novel was that neither of the main characters, Kenny and Tiegan, were billionaires. While I enjoy a good billionaire romance, it was refreshing to read about more relatable, "everyday" characters.
Unlike some books that immediately hook you and keep you riveted from start to finish, FWB presents a gradual build-up, drawing the reader in over time. The pacing allowed for a more immersive experience, and despite its shorter length, I found myself absorbed. FWB could easily be completed in a single day.
Kenny and Tiegan’s chemistry felt natural, and the author did a commendable job of revealing enough of their backstories to make their connection believable. However, there were moments when certain descriptions felt somewhat out of place, underdeveloped, and at times rushed.
One of my favorite moments in the book was when Tiegan attempted to move on with someone else. This was a pivotal moment that really highlighted Kenny's growing realization of his own feelings, which added a layer of emotional depth to their dynamic.
That said, I would have liked to see more exploration of their individual backgrounds. Specifically, I felt that Tiegan's insecurities regarding her body could have been explored further, as it seemed to play an important role in her self-image. Similarly, while we understand that Kenny has had difficult relationships in the past, I would have appreciated a deeper dive into his emotional journey, so we could feel more connected to his past and the way it shaped him.
As for the romance itself, the author does not shy away from the spice, delivering plenty of heat throughout the book. There were moments that left me thinking, "Wow, okay, that’s how you talk to someone!" The chemistry between the characters was undeniable, and the passion was palpable.
Overall, FWB was an enjoyable read with good character development, but I would have appreciated a little more depth in the exploration of their pasts. Still, it was a captivating story that kept me engaged once I got a few chapters into the book.
